    Fun fact for those who don't know: a large majority of this fight scene wasn't choreographed. Donnie Yen and Wu Jing grew up training together, so they spar a LOT. The sequences in the fight that consist of the two bashing each other's weapons frantically and wildly are mostly the two actors just going at it with prop weapons. Supposedly, Donnie broke several batons over Wu Jing's arms throughout production.

    I think wu jin's fighting style makes sense in this movie, he's a hired killer who enjoys cutting people not a pragmatic knife expert., I imagine he ignored any teachings a practical knife user would share in favor of a style to suit his enjoyment. in a previous scene he has another officer defeated but uses several non lethal cuts instead of just finishing the guy.

    • @GreenGlo1991
      @GreenGlo1991 4 роки тому +67

    I like the breakdown of the accuracy of the fight movements. Logan is right about what each should've done, but we have to remember that when you meet a fighter for the first time, you don't know what they are capable of or how skillful they are of their martial arts. So once you go into a fight it all comes down to skills. Donnie was reading Wu Jing's fighting style and realizes his advantages with his baton against Wu Jing's knife. Wu Jing's character seems to be a very cocky guy with no strategies which is probably why he kept charging forward when he should be flanking, as Logan pointed out. When Donnie finally starts charging he charges with a strategy of countering his knife strikes to eventually taking him out with success. Great breakdown of the scene and also thankyou for sharing your knowledge as well.

      Or it could be that Wu Jing's character, Jack, *did* have some strategies, but they just happen to be some of the worst/most incorrect strategies (the majority of 'em at least) which could also be attributed to the nature of Wu Jing's character, Jack, most notably his level of sheer arrogance and psychotic tendencies as a brutally sadistic assassin so that could be another explanation for why Jack ultimately failed against Detective Ma Kwun (Wu Jing's and Donnie Yen's characters respectively).

      IMHO. You will not get onto a knife fighting scenario with a knife wielding assailant who you do battle with using your knife, as in the movies. They will stab you without any frontal attack nor in broad daylight, or you will gut them before they know they are being attacked. No trained personnel is going to lunge with a single thrust or “psycho” shower scene downward plunge. Just from my limited experience. Knife scars? 12, so far (four in Olongapo and 2 in Manila in early 70,s) hopefully no
      more at my age.

      Guys... Nevermind Bryan Raymundo has actually absolutley no clue what running means. Running is also seen as an oposing threat to an attacker, most attackers are just to fucking lazy to run after you. They usually pic on People who don't oppose to them.
      Plus I believe the one who needs a weapon to fight is more of a pussy then the guy who runs. But I don't a shit what people think. I know what I am doing right.

  • @IdlePeasant
    @IdlePeasant 3 роки тому +18

    Of course running is the best option if possible, but if you and the other person are already within a few yards of each other, then running might not be the best option anymore because your opponent could potentially be faster than you, while at the same time, you'd be completely exposing your back to them. In the words of Logan Lo, "If I see your back, I own you."
    In this case, if you're already within a few yards of your opponent and they draw a knife on you, running is only going to give them an open target where they can dash after you and start stabbing you in the back. The best defense against a knife attacker is to have an answer of your own, ideally with another weapon like a knife, or in Donnie's case, a baton.
    Almost everyone should know that fights where both parties are armed with knives will end in disaster for both sides. So, if the knife attacker sees that you have a blade of your own, it'll make him think twice about whether or not it's worth the risk to rush in against someone who can cut him up just as badly.

    10/10 break down guys big thumbs up. I still think it's the best weapon fight scene ever made cuz everything is mesmeriring : the great music, that standoff with Wu-jin sadistic smile, the building of tension, the real experience of both fighters, the savagery, the choice of color who gives an unreal sensation and the lack of any modern CGI, doppelganger, cut every frame, wire crap. Only two masters and 2 cameras in a backalley.
    A close second would be the famous old boy corridor fight ;)
    I do think that the Wu-jin character was litteraly overwelmed with pain, he already received a nasty gunshot wound on his left arm and Donnie smartly exploit this by bashing this weak point.
    After sustaining so much punishment I don't think you can still think calmy so that explain why he use this kinda obvious looping attack.
    Adrenaline kicks in and you do the most instinctive move which is charging that way.
    Yet I'll follow your last advice : I'll never try to block or disarm a fury who's running at me screaming with bloodshot eyes cuz if you fail that microsecond to block the attack you're dead meat.
    I also wanted to ask : what do you think about taking off one's jacket and use it as a shield to defend against a knife attack ?

    Logan and Chad, great breakdown. Most entertaining and educational! Love the detail with which you both illustrate your points. As a fan of the movie "KIllzone", I wanted to respectfully suggest that perhaps the somewhat questionable decisions made by Wu Jing's character is a reflection of how the character was written. For me, the clues come earlier in the film when Wu Jing murders the other members of Donnie Yen's Hong Kong police squad. All of them with a knife. It's always with surprise and speed.
    In the case of one cop whom Wu Jing ambushed in a parking garage, he threw (and EMBEDDED!) his knife in the cop's forearm, softened him up with kung-fu techniques, then retrieved his knife, then OVERWHELMED the cop by slashing him with such speed, the victim could barely react. At which point, Donnie Yen tried to take several shots at Wu Jing, but missed every time. Subsequently, Wu Jing, slashes the wounded cop's throat to finish the job, then vanishes. Perhaps at that point, Wu Jing thought Donnie Yen was just another Hong Kong cop relying on his gun to fight...and proving himself impotent as a result. He probably thought that Donnie Yen, like his colleagues wouldn't last in a CQC fight.
    And then to his fatal dismay, Wu Jing found out how wrong he was in the alley.
    Clearly, he went into that fight thinking that Donnie Yen would be a pushover like his fellow officers. Only he discovered the hard way that Yen not only could keep up with him and deflect his slashes (for the most part), but Yen could also counter with a weapon that had a longer reach. The longer the fight went on, the more Wu Jing was losing...and he knew it. Watch his face during the fight...his expressions go from arrogance...to surprise...to frustration...to desperation...and finally, humiliation, when Donnie Yen delivered the final blow...by killing Wu Jing with his own weapon.
    Now, this is not to invalidate in any way your evaluation of Wu Jing's character's approach to fighting Donnie Yen's character. Just providing some speculation from a story standpoint why he didn't make the best decision.
    CHEERS!

    4:47 Wu Jings character did the drop because he’s right handed. Personally I think it was a smart move to get his weapon back to his dominate striking hand, very dangerous, but necessary given the circumstances.

    This fight scene is reported mostly real action and not choreographed.
    The director had let both the actors do their thing with minimal direction, and it took only 1 take, therefore what we see are mostly real exchanges of two fighters.
    I doubt in actual fight we can be so conscious on how to throw proper techniques when the pace was as fast as the movie shows.
    Nevertheless, it's a great breakdown

    This is the third video I’m watching of you guys’ breakdowns and they’re pretty amazing. However, I guess from the point of the coordinator, they’re taking into consideration the character at this point in the fight. Donnie Yen’s character struck Wu Jing’s character twice in the head, and at this point Wu’s character is enraged, out for blood, and is not in the proper mindset, hence a fatal move in the end with the overhead. But I’m loving these breakdowns.

    • @alsimmons4504
      @alsimmons4504 2 роки тому +1

      Well technically, Ma Kwun (Donnie's character) only struck Jack (Wu Jing's character) once in the head while the other times, he struck him in the mouth, the back (twice), struck him in the ribs and even the armpits as well so actually all of those things could be what led to Jack becoming more enraged, out for blood and not being in the proper mindset which ultimately led up to him being fatally killed in the end.

    Hi Logan, awesome breakdown of the movie..
    Really happy to see a PTK's practitioner giving dream down on action Movies.
    I'm Ben, my mate and I had the honour of attending one of tohon Rommel's mid 2000's work shop in Malaysia.
    I maintain on the basic drills when my mate Uwei Chong, went on learning under Tuhon Tim Waid.
    now an instructor I believed when he attended Uni in NYC.
    I'd like to share some stories reported regarding this particular fight scene. I'm not sure if you are aware about this fight scene is completely unchoreograph unlike most other H.k. action Movies.
    Donnie Yen was the fight choreographer on this scene and he decided to go full on free styling.
    Resulting Wu Jing ribs and forearm broken... You were spot on!
    It was reported that Wu Jing was asked to fight holding the icepack form with big movement by Donnie Yen. They had some problems and went viral,
    Their way of marketing during film promotion I guess..
    ..
    Apparently, like Jet Li, they were also students of the 北京
    市什刹海体育运动学校武术队Beijing Shichahai Sports School.
    These guys had train their whole life in Martial Art,
    Makes performing somee crazy movement seems like breathing naturally
    But it is after all,
    different from Combative training..
    Where ones mind is set to react while ready to strake becomes the first nature.
    Which those drills sometimes may not look as good on screens like those choreographed or preformed by these guys. .
    Although Donnie Yen seem to has way more experience comparing to EU Jing,
    in various different disciplines of martial arts with full contact combative experiences. Does made Wu Jing seems coming in short..
    Unlike stunts in movie, PTK's Drill were pass down from a long line of actual experience accumulated on life and death situations from Grand tuhon Leo Gaji's family through real life event and experience.
    Hehe, my two cents..
    Got a bit excited writing this..
    Truly appreciate you sharing the drills..
    So the least I can do is sub and share..
    I'll post this clip on FB after this.
    All the Best with your channel subscriptions.
    Wish all is well with you and your love ones..
    Stay safe,
    Enjoys 😁🙏🤩

    What I love most about this fight is how it's broken into three distinct sections:
    1) The two combatants charge, overconfident in themselves and underestimating each other, and they each get injured - Donnie sustains two cuts and Wu takes two hits to the ribs.
    2) Weary of their opponents' abilities, they now fight in short bursts, looking for an opening but afraid to commit to an attack they can't back out of in a hurry.
    3) Frustrated at the lack of progress, Donnie rushes with everything he's got and the rest of the fight is as frantic as can be.

  • @loneronin6813
    @loneronin6813 2 роки тому +2

    I once heard that Donnie Yen and Wu Jing have a lot of experience working together and as a result they know how one another performs and because of that this scene was mostly on-the-spot improvisation. I can't confirm how true that is, but given the skill of these two I wouldn't be too surprised if there is truth to that story.

    • @ScenicFights
      @ScenicFights  2 роки тому +1

      This might be true! Accoring to film school rejects: "Yen choreographed the fight’s framework, but reportedly he and Wu improvised as they went along. They basically competed to see who could make contact with the other," which makes the scene that much awesome.

    Dueling in reverse grip will always be a bad idea. It's meant for grappling at extreme close range and for concealment to draw cut/stab. Modern examples of reverse grip include military training for when clearing a room and turning a corner if someone on the other side grapples you and your primary weapon (gun) you can pull your knife and stab in reverse grip to get them off you.

  • @savagenature1
    @savagenature1 4 роки тому +1

    My theory for why Wu Jin's character didn't use the best techniques is due to arrogance and underestimating his opponent. His character prides himself on killing his targets with blades and martial skill. He even puts down one of the other cops in the film for relying so heavily on his gun.
    Donnie Yen's character on the other hand is built up to be an exceptional martial artist. Easily outclassing the other cops. Wu Jing's character however probably made the mistake of underestimating him. Like I said, he views himself as superior to the other cops. Donnie Yen's character is probably the first to give him a good fight in a really long time.
    Another thing worth noting is that the fight scene was shot very quickly and was heavily improvised

    Did you know the middle section where Wu Jing is going low and there's lots of back and forth, was improvised? That's basically Donnie and Wu just "playing", but Donnie specifically told Wu Jing to be more "wild" with his movements, as his trained attacks didn't fit the character's temperament. Which explains a lot of the less than ideal choices Wu Jing makes, both in the improvised section and the choregraphed bits.
