  • We drove down to U-Tapao to see the area where the United States Air Force base was located. Candy's father was stationed there during the Vietnam war.
So we stopped by the U-Tapao International Airport and took a picture and some video of the sign (not sure if this is where the actual US base was located but close enough!).
We also saw several Thai military stations for Thai Marines, Army, and Navy.
After that, we stopped at the Big C in U-Tapao to pick up some special Thai cooking ingredients for Candy's mom.
The interesting part of this trip (final part of the video) was that we saw the Buddha Mountain from the highway on our way to U-Tapao. It looked sort of far but we decided to go check it out.
As you would expect, we had a nice Thai lunch there before going to see the mountain.
Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain) is located specifically in Na Chom Thian, Sattahip district, Chon Buri province.
It was drawn with lasers. This was done as a tribute to King Rama IX on the 50th anniversary of his ascension to the throne. It is maintained by the Thai Marines.
Buddha Mountain is definitely a highlight and worth going to see. Also, there was no charge or the visit (this is in November 2023). And there are plenty of shops and food at the location.
We hope you enjoyed another Thai adventure from our channel.

Unbelievable changes. I was stationed at U-Tapao in 1968. Yes, the international airport is exactly where the old RTNB was located, in fact the runway may still be used. The surrounding infrastructure is amazing - from a basic Third World to this. 😲 Additionally, it was never an American Air Force Base; rather a Royal Thai Navy Base (RTNB) and was 'rented' to the US. The base was landfill using the surrounding mountains. One of those was known as Buddha and I wonder if it is the same mountain, which could be seen in the distance looking to the Northeast. America built that entire base, yet owned none of it. It was the home of the 4258th Strategic Wing and the wing commander was an American Colonel. The Base Commander was always a Thai officer with the Royal Thai Navy and had absolute control of the base that we built.

Thank you for sharing. We'll also let Candy's dad read this as he as stationed there. That area is really growing and glad we drove down there.
