White shark surprise breach off Wellfleet, MA (7/30/18)

  • While out on research trips, we've seen white sharks breach and we've received multiple reports of breaching white sharks this year from fishermen and boaters. While encounters like this one are rare, this video shows that they’re certainly possible. White sharks are wild and unpredictable animals. This is a good reminder of the importance of not becoming complacent and always staying vigilant when in or on the water.

      It is rather frightening that there are still people who believe that sharks hunt specifically for humans. White sharks are known to look out of the water to see what is on the surface, but in this case he probably just followed a shadow and thought it was a bird. They are also known for catching birds...

    I'm very pro shark, I love them, but those claiming all human attacks are accidents are just plain wrong. We aren't as calorie dense as seals etc so not first choice, but if hungry enough, protecting feeding grounds or agitated they may well attack. Consumption and repeat attacks after a first strike CANNOT be a "mistake" and those claiming attacks are provoked need to admit to the fact that most sharks attacks came from sharks that were unseen, so how can you provoke something you didn't even know was there? Sharks have every right to be there so if you get attacked you have to accept a certain amount of responsibility as its not like they walk up the beach and grab you from the comfort of your hotel room, but let's not go the other way and pretend they are always accidents. They are wild animals that need to eat, under the wrong circumstances we are food!

    • @jmo8934
      @jmo8934 Рік тому +8

      We’re just not their natural prey. They usually go after a seal or something when they see it swimming on top and they do that approach from underneath where they smash it. It’s not to say they won’t go for a human if they happen to be in the same position on a surfboard or whatever. It might not be what they are expecting but they still go with it.

    • @longlivela7963

      Tracking really isn't a sign of intelligence but much more instinct. Sharks are actually not very smart at all but they are curious animals and quite possibly the best and most fit hunters to ever be on this earth over the course of millions of years. Something like a dolphin is much smarter though and would know not to attack something that isn't their prey, white sharks don't realize this until after they've tried a bite because they don't have nearly the same level of intelligence as most mammals

      Yes. Quite good, i think. I once read that their vision under water is as acute as our is, above.
      And theirs is above, as ours is, under the water. But as ours becomes blurred due to solar refraction, saline, and sediment. Their's suffers from over exposure (too much light), and distortions due to rapid drying of the lens.
      Its very interesting. I wish there was a way we could communicate with them. Then again, maybe not. It might not be the scientific type of conversation one would expect....

The Great White could have attacked him if he fell in, but the Great White would probably be grossed out unless it was starving and desperate. The likelihood of a fish that can only be beaten by orcas running entirely out of food in the ocean is really rare, even with overfishing.

      They're 'adaptable'; white sharks in Australia can and do eat humans with a surprising degree of frequency. There was a time in the late 1980s thru the 1990s that nearly all the fatal white shark attacks in Oz resulted in total or partial consumption of the victim. So, I'm guessing a small subset of the population simply views the bony swimming primate as just another edible item.

      @@bennu547 first of all it was a joke. Second, why do I see sharks breaching while teying to get a seal but miss the seal.
      Third, do you think that shark heard the heartbeat of the man on the plank? Do you believe the shark knew there was a man on that plank?
      Four, maybe the shark thought the big thing coming at him was an orca and since he hated his home life he decided to kill himself by jumping in front of it. But since his eyes were so bad and his sensors were messed up due to the aluminum trim of the boat in the salt water he was wrong and it was just a boat.

    This reminds me of the scene in JAWS where Brodie is asked by Hooper to go way out on the pulpit of the boat to give Hooper's camera shot "scale"
