I live on the Monterey Peninsula, I'm so familiar with the waters, waves and animals out in the bay, we've got seal lions, whales, porpoises, and of course all breds of the beautiful sharks. This man is VERY LUCKY, and BLESSED to be rescued from our waters, all in one piece.
I paddle board, kayak and canoe all the time. I’ll NEVER understand why people choose to do those activities in open water or the ocean. It’s just crazy for real. Wow that person is very lucky.
Just depends on the area. If you're in CA, there are areas that aren't as teeming with sharks than others, depending on location of local seal or elephant seal breeding grounds. That's where the sharks tend to congregate. If you are surfing, diving, swimming, SUPing, or kayaking near those areas then you put your life in God's eager hands every time.
Wow! If your kayak was 14ft...and the dorsal to tail looked equal to the kayak's length, then this shark had to be 18ft minimum. How was that feeling floating in the water waiting to be rescued?! That had to be the worst part?! Glad you survived it!
Who cares, I'd rather see the footage than him waste time worrying about calling someone. What about the other 500 people watching? The sail boat would have gotten there at the same time so relax and enjoy the shaky footage.

All over the world now, everyone has a cell phone and they grab it out of their pocket to film something FIRST, without even considering that FIRST you need to help someone or something in trouble! A shame, really.
If there was ever a situation when Karen needed to call ALL of the managers, it was this one. (In all seriousness though, Karen remembered that phones can be used to call for help just as well as they can film videos - well done, Karen!)
outbackeddie: Some sharks can be found in lakes and rivers. Even if it's not the shark, you gotta worry about gators in many waterways now too. That plus other species people be illegally dumping into our waters. My rule of thumb is that I just do not go into any lakes, rivers or even ponds. Only time I go in the ocean is up to my knees/waist, and only then it has to be crystal clear water so I can see the bottom, and see 30-40 yards around me... LOL
I had a terror moment in the water once (not involving sharks thank god) i was swimming to an island (approx a football field away from shore) im halfway to the island and a boat going full throttle is heading right at me. I could tell he never saw me. I started frantically splashing in the water and waving my hand so he could see me. I guess he saw me at the last minute. He didn't even stop and just looked at me like i was from another planet. I will never forget the terror which is nothing to what this kayaker went through.
Scary. I was freediving off the south shore of Oahu, Hawaii when a boat passed very close to me obviously unaware I was on the surface. The boat didn't scare me nearly as much as the lure they were trolling did. Two treble hooks whizzed by within inches of me.

It didnt leave bite impressions in kayak ? Thats fastest way to tell , and how big was kayak 12 ft ? My guess the shark was between 13 to 14 ft which is a massive shark , in video shows good shot of shark next to kayak it looked about 2 ft longer than kayak why i say around a 14 ft white pointer
Yes the 18 footer is believed to be the culprit of the surf beach attacks since 2011 evey 2 years a massive 18 plus ft has stalked surfers near santa Barbara and taken lives , I still believe the shark in video is around 15 ft max which is truly massive still it looks to be a foot or so bigger than kayak , let us know when you find out I am very interested thanks
brian c ...I watched this video, then your response and read your article. I couldn't tell in the video that the shark left the kayak and came toward you. When you said that and then he dove under you, all I could think is that he's getting ready to hit you from below. Then I watched the video again, and I just don't know how you stayed so calm. I know you attribute it to training, but I think some people have an internal strength and fortitude, that helps you survive extreme circumstances. Well done! So very happy you are ok. Btw...Beautiful photography on your website. Thanks for sharing. Great video too...I didn't catch your name but kudos to you and your wife reacting quickly.
I read the kayaker's report of this online long before I saw this video, and the video matches up exactly as described in the written account. Good Lord, it must have seemed like an eternity waiting for that sailboat to pick him up. Although it doesn't show the initial strike, this encounter looks to be more of a territorial attack than a predatory attack, but it's hard to tell for sure.
Yes seemed entirely territorial. No predation as evidenced by the shark ignoring the man in the water. More research going into the territorial aspect of strikes and attacks by sharks.

I was an open-water diver in Monterey Bay some years ago. Mostly we stayed in the area where the kelp fields were because sharks didn't come into that area where there were a lot of sea lions and seals, and they knew it! Sharks don't like kelp forests. There is NO WAY you could get me out in a kayak in that area now. With the rise in ocean temps, sharks are chasing bait-fish in close to shore now, and that is Great White area! I saw a nurse shark resting on the bottom but that wasn't a threat. Monterey Bay, California, is within the "Red Triangle," (due to shark bites) and bloody water!) an area stretching from Monterey Bay up past San Francisco to about Bodega Bay and out west to the Farallon Islands. We used to fish out there near the Farallons all the time in about 300' deep water for rock cod, salmon during a run, and we'd see a lot of pinnipeds (a favorite food of sharks) all the time. Once I thought I had a huge salmon on the line, it ran way out, I was trying to reel it in and it was heavy, then it stopped. I reeled in just the head of a salmon, and saw a sea lion surface out there, chewing, and saying "thank you!"
I once saw a sealion attack a salmon off of the pier just inside GG bridge outside the Warming Hut cafe. There was an almighty commotion in the water and by the time I got there I saw a salmon pop up to the surface bitten in two and blood everywhere. I was sure I was about to see my first great white and then a delighted sealion popped it's head up and started to devour the fish.
I thought conventional wisdom held that sharks do lurk in kelp beds amidst the seals and sea lions, in search of a meal. It is odd to hear that they actually avoided kelp beds in the past. Shows how little this landlubber knows about the sea.
@@riverbankfisher yes they’ve 100% been observed hunting in kelp forests in S. Africa at least. Stands to reason they’d hunt in N. Cali kelp forests too!
Great Whites prefer cold water temps. The water is warmer the shallower it gets. So if you blame great whites coming into shallow water because of "the rising ocean temperatures", then you are a moron. Great Whites do go into kelp forests.
Many years ago I was doing a checkout scuba dive with my sister in Monterey Bay. She was facing me when out of nowhere (due to low visibility) a great white🦈 swam behind her in front of me. It was huge, probably 12 feet long. She did not see it. Thankfully, it showed no interest and kept moving. I signaled her to head for shore. When we got in, she told me my eyes were as big as silver dollars when I was signaling to go in. So, I told her why. It was then I noticed the sea lions were all on their rooks and not entering the water. This happened early in the morning. Watching the local news in the evening it reported a surfer 🏄♂️ went missing around noon (about a mile down the beach, where we had been scuba diving) and all that was ever found was his surfboard with a big bite taken out of it by a shark. We continued our check out dive the next day, down by Carmel instead.

They did call for help. If you've ever been in a situation like this, you're trying to figure out what you're seeing, your autonomic nervous system is kicking in, which could mean a freeze response. It seems like a long time to us watching it from our sofas, but give these people a break. Also what good would one more person be in the water with a shark? Only someone with a boat could help him, which is what happened.

Keith Baker he's completely right though. the guy filmed for two mins before telling his wife to call for him... The shark tried to snatch him and got caught up in the kayak, probably got its teeth jammed up in the netting on the side.. so yeah I think if it hadn't been tangled up in a lump of floating plastic, it was definitely trying to eat him bro.. and before you come back with he had plenty of time after he got loose.. I think he decides to call it quits after that ordeal...
There's nothing human about it either it's sick
I can't believe the people filming didn't immediately call someone. It took them a long time to even think of it!! What if it was someone they loved?
A cool and calm mind could be the line between life and death...you can see the shark wrestling the kayak and a head slowly drifting away from the arena....Slow and steady. He just kept calm and survived, let that be a lesson for us all. 2 thumbs up for Brian C.
Beautiful sharks….yes right….
@maxmorlock697 yeah I guess sea lion, whales, and porpoises are not beautiful lol
I paddle board, kayak and canoe all the time. I’ll NEVER understand why people choose to do those activities in open water or the ocean. It’s just crazy for real. Wow that person is very lucky.
I live on Maui, the ocean is the only place here to do it. We don't have lakes.
I SUP. Stay close to shore.
Ppl are really stupid today.
@LisaLou4sho then I'd take up a different sport that didn't involve water
Don't just do something, stand there.
Brilliant! That about sums up this video.

Thank you Karen for calling and helping out!
And they are just sitting there filming this event! The person in the water struggling and then they call for help???!!! UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!
What are they going to do , start yelling at the sky? Or maybe the shark?
Wow! If your kayak was 14ft...and the dorsal to tail looked equal to the kayak's length, then this shark had to be 18ft minimum. How was that feeling floating in the water waiting to be rescued?! That had to be the worst part?! Glad you survived it!
Bet the water turned a deep shade of brown surrounding that kayaker.Glad he made it safely.
@@eamonnlittle9040 😂🤣
thats what i was thinking.... they get fucking big in that bay!
I think he survived by staying calm and not thrashing around and just staying calm,
when was the camera guy gonna call for help? after filming?
Who cares, I'd rather see the footage than him waste time worrying about calling someone. What about the other 500 people watching? The sail boat would have gotten there at the same time so relax and enjoy the shaky footage.

“What about the other 500 people watching.”
This is why many people die when they could have been saved. Everyone thinks someone else will take care of it and then its too late.
@@kevind1980 I'm gonna guess the guy in the water. Bet he cares a lot.

Maybe he was going to wait and call for help once he heard a blood curling scream and the water turn red?
Meh, probably not.
You CAN and SHOULD NEVER only watch an attack without even looking for help first!
"He got knocked out of his kayak by a shark"
"You mean... a person?!" 😂😂
"Look at the kayak, see the shark"
"You mean a person?"
"Yea, look at the kayak"
"You mean a person?"
"Yea, look at the kayak"
"Should we call someone"
"Yea, look at the kayak.
And now he's going toward the person"
Facepalm. Shaking my head slowly.
Well, as long as the guy and Karen got good video footage to post, does it really matter if the kayak guy gets eaten by the shark due to their delay in making a rescue call? Some people are disgusting.
Ahole
@@SuperGlory111 hey he was being sarcastic.
We all know what happens in 2023, when a hero saves the day: They get arrested.
We all know what happens in 2023, when someone calls for help: They get branded a karen.
or.... they post a video of someone getting injured, and get 5000 Likes.
This guy made the only logical 2023 call.
Who’s Karen?
Nothing about this womans behavior qualifies her as a "Karen"
You clearly don't know what a "Karen" really is because this woman is not it. Not in this video anyway.
He filmed this shark attack for one minute and 17 seconds before either of them thought to call for help. Sick.
Retired shark fighter here, I experienced the samething but used my patented head lock followed by a barrage of blows to the face with brass knuckles. Stay street smart. Stay shark safe.
Yeah alright mate
It took you long enough to call didn't it!?! Sheesh put down the camera and call first next time!!!
All over the world now, everyone has a cell phone and they grab it out of their pocket to film something FIRST, without even considering that FIRST you need to help someone or something in trouble! A shame, really.
But then what would we watch???
Umm Hello police? There's a shark in the ocean
I'm watching this with my daughter and I want her to understand to always call for help the moment someone is in danger
My thoughts exactly
Those 4+ minutes felt like hours to me. I don't wanna imagine how did the kayaker felt.
It is amazing too how the kayaker kept calm in that situation
He kept calm simply because he knew it was over. But thank God he survived the attack.
Kept calm....or frozen in fear.
He was busy covering the water piss and poo.
"Call sombody karen, I have a cell phone in my hand but im too busy filming"
If there was ever a situation when Karen needed to call ALL of the managers, it was this one.
(In all seriousness though, Karen remembered that phones can be used to call for help just as well as they can film videos - well done, Karen!)
This is why I do all my kayaking in lakes. Small lakes. Really small lakes.
outbackeddie I don’t even kayak in lakes, I do all my kayaking in the bathtub!
@@bskee001 hahahahaha
@@bskee001 : Sounds like the safest place...lol
outbackeddie: Some sharks can be found in lakes and rivers. LOL
I don’t even like bath tubs
The shark just didn't like how this dude was riding a pink kayak.
I saw the fin, the kayak and the guy. But what was the movement up at the top of the screen in the water?
People giving ‘Karen’ a hard time but at least she thought to call for help. Dude filming was straight up entertained
That guy was totally Blessed. Who besides me thinks kayaks are not for the ocean?! Famous Quote:. I think you need a bigger boat!
Seriously, WTF are you doing in the kayak in a shark infested area?
I have seen so many kayakers and sharks or even alligators, they are definitely not meant for the ocean or wherever there are apex predators!!!
Monterey including carmel is so beautiful...i am from austria and i lived there for 4 years but the water is full of sharks...esp.great with aks jaws

"Waitd over 1:20 to say call someone Karen" FAIL
Idiots
That was pretty crappy
Saucey Pants yea the guy filming is a dumbass, what an asshole,
Amen I'd said the same thing this guy was more concerned about his film than the safety of the man in the water. All he'd to do was tu call RESCUE 911 instead he started talking bullshit with his wife that was the person with braids tu call for HELP. THANK YOU LADY.TEACH YOUR HUBBY WHAT TO DO IN CASES LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE.
If you could've seen it was a shark and you kept on saying so, why didn't you call 911 right away. Instead of gawking and chatting on and on about it. You should of called 911 right away after the split second you saw this!
That sailboat performed the "man overboard recovery" technique very well. Glad everyone except the kayak made it out OK.
I saw this video and immediately booked two kayak trips for Monterey and Channel Islands. It was a great time. Thanks guy in water for showing us how to have a good time!
„Call somebody Karen.“ and he unleashed another hysterical angry Karen to the world.
took them a minute and a half to realize ''maybe we should do something'' luckily it wasn't a matter of life or death right ?
Fr. 1:20 sec to call or even sail over their and get him smh. Glad he safe doe. Thank God.
They knew something was wrong as he pointed out the shark a number of times to 'Karen' before she made a call. The dude in trouble even waved out.
Gotta teach the kayaker a lesson no?
Uh someone might be dying...gotta film this!
Right! Recent stats have shown that normally, a person looks at their cell-phone an average of 200 times a day! (New kind of sicko addiction!)
Lol
Can’t imagine how scared the kayaker must have been bobbing there in the water, waiting for the shark to lose interest in the kayak and go for him.
Why didn't he swim away? ? Annoying
I am grateful you got footage. Well done.
took him long enough to say 'call someone, sharon'.
" He,s waving" go ahead honey, wave back?

I am so very happy you are safe . It happened so very fast . Thank god nothing else happened. I always thought about that attack every day wondering how you were. Thank you for contacting me . So very good to hear from you that you are ok.
Seemed to me like it lasted about 5 years...
Your video will be a big help to researchers who were trying to determine the shark's size.
Brian have you ever fished from the kayak or did you have any food with you?
brian c ...I watched this video, then your response and read your article.
Wheres the report?

Psht. As if bringing a shark to a kayak fight is any more fair.
Unless your this guy
Monterrey California??
Was the person ok? I seen it get out the water. Does anyone know?
Great story! Thank you.
I immediately thought of Goodfellas when he said her name... The part. When Henry said! "Karen. Why would you do that Karen"!!!
How do you call this a great white shark when you only seen fins from a distance?
"Call somebody, Karen!" My new catch phrase!! ;-)

I'm in shock. why did it take SO LONG to call someone?? was the video more important than his life?! I'd call right away & then run out to help if I could. with simple things like a first aid kit , rope , a flare gun to distract the shark. that man could've died.
T. Angel Buddy . Do you always carry that stuff with you ? And the only person I know to walk on water was Jesus. Nice try.
gene mace a basic emergency kit . yes I do. are you saying you can't swim? again video was more impt to you. get over yourself and admit it. again why so long to call for help? you picked up your camera and took the time to explain to who you were with - THE RIGHT thing to was call help FIRST.
T. Angel Buddy "Are you saying you cant swim?" Lol at that comment. Yea.. Im sure you wouldve swam to help the person. Maybe put the shark in a choke hold?

Keith Baker he's completely right though. the guy filmed for two mins before telling his wife to call for him...
