The most valuable thing about electronic drums is the fact that they have a volume knob coming from old school acoustic player.. I build hybrid and E-Acoustic conversion kits with Pearl Export series drums since 1997. I have yet to find ANY marketed E-kits that perform like playing real drums like my own. And I still use and swear by the Roland TD8 modules and CY series dual zone cymbals to cover all genres of drums, cymbals, H-H and F/X along with dual ply mesh heads and Roland cones. Performing live since 1984
Interesting chat. I'm a bit surprised over the discussion about the EN Pro. Loved the sounds I heard when it first came out, and I tried a 7X for a short period but was a disappointed and returned it (I use a 50X), but the EN Pro seems to be worth revisiting, ....that is, after I see what Roland is about to launch.
I personally don't need the high hat to be 2 piece and move at all it can be stationary I just want it to operate accurately and have positional censoring. 12 inch digital stationary hats need em..86 the stand give me a quality foot controller with dual in and out.
Small correction at 2:55 - the non 'Pro' Efnote modules (3, 5 & 7) actually have 4 outputs as you can split the headphone output and route individual or groups of channels in either mono or stereo. Just a minor thing. ;) Love this video @justin!
You are so right about the Roland kickdrum set up on the KD the striker pad is a bit small I use a pair of KD200 love them and the way they feel but the beaters are a little crowded.. Also the design is so simple that you can just buy the kit install in any shell it's genius..
Nice interview, Justin. I watched the whole hour. For someone like me, who plays 4-5 gigs monthly, I'm still looking for that perfect combination of price, looks and sound. The $7-10k edrum kit just isn't something I'm able to make work, especially when the modules aren't as good as Superior Drummer 3, and my custom A2E kit looks and plays like a real drum set (perhaps not the cymbals when I'm 100% electronic). I've been using a TD-30 for triggering and thought I needed a backup if my laptop went down. I'm going to switch to eDrumin modules and sell it. I'd rather have a duplicate laptop as a backup. The sound is that important. I'm still waiting for the playing field to level out. There are far more people looking for a great $1500 and less kit than a $7,000 kit. You can go A2E for about $3000.
Great discussion! I have a TD20S kit and am looking to upgrade the module. I really like the sounds of the new Strata Prime module but it doesn't appear to be fully compatible with my TD20S pads and cymbals. Any suggestions?
Just one man's opinion on the subject with 35+ years of playing drums and about 20 years of that involved with owning and playing a plethora of e-drums; the cream of the crop [of physical offerings] is going to be coming out of the Roland/DW and EFNOTE camps. Add to that the ever-popular VST of Superior Drummer to expand your sonic realm. It is very interesting to me that Roland's approach with the DWe kit is kind of abandoning the digital USB connectivity that they pushed so hard with the digital snare, cymbals, and TD-27/50/50X modules in favor of the wireless tech; without reading their whitepapers on the wireless tech, I can only speculate the data throughput and bandwidth of the wireless pads is at least on par with what you'd get over digital USB. It's also a shame to hear that the Pearl Mimic Pro is nearing a slow death since that module is a powerhouse and has a lot of innovative features that still holds some reign in things - I think if Pearl expanded the companion ePro shell pack in different configs and colors, etc. there would be more market response + sales and perhaps feed into continual development of the module. My selfish wants is for EFNOTE to come out with a 22" kick configuration and DW to offer the DWe in Design Series or PDP Concept shells - huge potential for sales since we won't have to pay Collector Series prices.

Thanks you guys I started on a crappy Ion edrum years ago & beat that thing till it was wrapped in duct tape. Looking for a pro mesh kit with natural sounds. 👍
I'm looking to purchase the Roland TD27kv2 soon, but had been choosing it and the Strata Prime, and it's because of the digital hi-hat, snare and ride. Are the sounds in the Prime that much better than that of the Td27kv2? The 28 channels of audio over USB are a huge plus as I plan on using it in studio setting. I'm a big fan, originally from Ohio living in Texas.
I want to see a module that will allow a plug in touchscreen, so that I can plug in my own 15” touchscreen or 11” or whatever.. Or follow the soundcraft Ui route, and make the interface as basically its own website, hosted inside the module, so you can plug in, or wifi connect using your phone, or tablet, or laptop
Hey Justin, awesome video! Great and insightful information. Would love to see more podcast style content like this! I had a question for you, at the $3000 price point (getting a deal from someone) for a brand new Alesis Strata Prime, would you be inclined to say its one of the better kits to get for the dollar, or is there something else you recommend I consider instead at that price point? Am making the final decision tomorrow and overall like what I see about it, but don't want to be blinded by the Strata Prime if something else would be better. It seems like a good well rounded kit on the market eight now with the modile and cymbals. I appreciate your thoughts on it! Thanks for the video!
Hi i have a question for some recommendations. Im ok with spending some money on a good e-kit. I do not really care for looks but im only interested en best realistic feel ,sound because i just want the best rehersal/practice kit . What would you recommend? Price up to 6k Thanx in advance
I have created a hybrid set 2 kick drums my double pedal is set up on the left kick drum and a single kick pedal on the right kick drum I can move left or right and have double kick when I move left I have acoustic hats and snare When volume is not an issue and I want acoustic hats and snare also use acoustic ride when I move left.. sort of gives the best of both worlds..
Honestly, the biggest issue with electronic drums is they are basing the sound engine on samples and different static samples being triggered by different velocity layers. Many keyboards are now combining sampling with synthesis technology such as physical modelling. This is why things like the Nord Drum 3P are excellent because it's rooted in the original Simmons idea of percussion synthesizers. Obviously now we can do more than laser gun and thunderous white noise type sounds...physical modelling, FM synthesis. Yes it might be complex for a drummer to start creating tones from scratch but it's certainly going to give a lot more of an organic sound and flexibility than static samples.
I hope every drum company from Ludwig to Mapex comes out with their own version of an E-Kit with Acoustic sized shells with built in triggers come on let's go!!!!
They're mostly gonna use components from Medeli or some of the other edrum manufacturers instead of developing their own stuff and you're gonna be left in the exact same market you started before that.
„Hihats are hard to get right“ Yeah true, i have the VH-10 and sure it‘s okaaay, i always thought it could be a better playing experience though. You think the Lemon 2-piece Hihat would be a noticeable upgrade or is it more or less the same?
Good shit! While you didn't directly ask them, it seems they still think the TD50X and Roland digital pack is the best on the market... what a relief!!!! /s Enjoyed the video... but tell us Justin, why do you hate Acoustic drums so much??? 🤣
I have the Strata Prime kit and I like it, but I do have one concern, which they say is being worked on. At the moment, you cannot do a backup of kits and settings. This is the biggest concern I have about it.
I agree 100%. It has an SD slot, and it should be a no-brainer. I've had it for 3 months and created 40 user kits. One factory reset, and they're all gone.
Hey man, I stumbled across your pearl mimic pro video. Would you rank that #1 of all the modules that are offered today? Mainly when it comes to playing out, recording, universal compatibility with almost all brands, and the fact it comes with really good VST sounds... sorry, i know thats a mouthful
If I could put a pearl mimic pro screen on a TD50 module with that functional interface I'd be fairly satisfied.. Oh yeah I would still need optional snare and high hat size.. 18 digital ride symbol is lovely..
Just watching this video now. I'm at the part where you Justin, or asking about touch screens. I would love to own an Efnote kit. I fell in love with the internal sounds when I had a chance to play with one at a drum store in Kansas City. However, , as a completely blind person, with only a touch screen available, I was unable to use that product without any cited assistance. I am not against touch screens, I use one on my mobile phone. However, my phone talks, which allows me to use it. Right now, the drum kits that have a touch screen, I cannot use, which is very frustrating for me right now. I'm hoping that some company in the near future will change this, should the industry decide to make this move as a whole.
25:25 I was literally thinking about how the tech is so advanced in one avenue, but is still behind on others. May need some tech tips, I would love to see you talk to Linus from LTT as it would be a great opportunity for you and it's a side of tech idt I've ever seen him have a deep dive into
I bought the Alesis Stara Prime . Going to buy at Sweet Water I wanted to try it before buy because I didn’t like the strike. Had to wait hours to get on because only electric kit they wanted to play on was the Strata . I had to ask can I try this . There was all de kits but they gravitated to the Strata.
How can we get in contact with Edrumcenter to find what product best for us to purchase and I can't seem to get the rim triggers on my Alesis Strike Pro to actually trigger correctly. Have tried numerous settings and using owner manual. Any ideas?
The reason why I got rid of my VAD is the hi-hat. Even the VH14D is still not up to scratch. Hihats is always the most difficult thing to nail and no one has done it yet. The VH14D is not even truly digital, the open close is not digital, what I feel is that playing fast 16th notes and opening/closing is nothing compared to the real thing
Brooo do you even know what your talking about?! The VH-14D Hi Hat is the closest experience to a a Hi-Hat that i've ever made.. it's like 90% there. You know that you can adjust every single triggersetting on you modul do you? This allows you to tease out every nuance on this pad. Worth every penny. That same applies to the Digital Snare and Ride. Roland is like always years ahead of anybody in the drum market. The DWe also belongs to Roland..for a Reason.
Yeah, it's pretty darn close, although, I do wish we had a bit more control over the surfaces of the digital hardware. Like the upper left side is a cow bell, the upper right is a wood block and the bottom 2 are different sounding snares. THAT would put edrums way ahead of acoustic, just by giving the user more control, and on easy to use settings with touch screens. That would rule !!!!
@@DrumHood Ha, German detected. "Ich would say [...]" :-) Where are you? I use a triple zone 15" Lemon cymbal on a hihat stand, a eDRUMin10 module and a DIY Hall effect sensor on the pedal. Damn, that works so good. Together with the Toontrack libraries I have egde, bow, bell articulations.
Personally, I still think the problem with e-drums is they're considerably more expensive than an acoustic drumkit in some markets, which makes them not so much advantageous, as the investment you're saving not getting an e-drum can be turned into making acoustic drums playable on certain environments.
I've been a drummer for decades and just bought an Alesis e-drum set in 2020. I love the flexibility but absolutely HATE the TERRIBLE customer support (or simply the lack thereof) from Alesis. I've reached out to them for MONTHS when having trouble, and they NEVER responded back at all...unacceptable!! I'll never buy from them again. I even now have a dead zone on half of my snare drum that I'm trying to solve on my own. The other issue I've experienced is "no way to control the vibration/sound" particularly from the bass drum. I've tried everything to dampen the vibration but nothing works. Any suggestions?
What happened to alesis? I can't even find the pro model and the company I called to place my order told me they were discontinued and a lot of their models were discontinued. What's goin on?
The Strike Pro used to be their flagship, now it's the Strata Prime, so I think they're slowly phasing that kit out of production. I still see most of their other kits for sale on major websites like Sweetwater and Guitar Center.
9:20 he’s a bit mislead I think. Literally every kit efnote has made has introduced new instruments. He seems to have come into the fold recently and doesn’t really understand the evolution Justin was speaking about. These things don’t come come out of thin air lol. The 5 introduced their 14” hats and first 8” splash. The 7 introduced the first ever 20” ride, 14” snare, 20” kick and 15” floor. The 7X introduced the 17” FX cymbal and the first cymbal stack. The pro introduced the 8” tom and 18” China. The mini didn’t just introduce the smaller kick drum, it also introduced the 10” three zone snare. Literally every kit has evolved the product line, exactly how you said. I’m happy to own three of them and love this company.

I'm fascinated by sensory percussion's trigger system, but their implementation is funky and not compelling to edrummers that just want to trigger drum sounds. This leads me to contemplate what the next step is in triggering technology. How long will piezo triggers reign supreme? Have we maxed out it's capabilities? I'm no engineer, not in the slightest, but i keep thinking there must be a way to use camera technology that can identify where the stick is hitting the drum or cymbal, while also detecting the speed of the stick... Anybody smarter than me know if that's at all feasible? Seems like it could really be a slick and flexible way to trigger drum sounds Anyone have any other pie in the sky ideas?
The Strata Prime is 5K here, which is a grand too much, especially with a history of lower quality and (even with the Strata) sub-par hi-hats compared to the EfNote and Roland digital hats. A Strata Pro with acoustic sized shells, a better hi-hat and multiple config options starting at 5 grand CAD would be reasonable I think.
1 mth later and Roland release the 716 and they still haven’t utilized the 3 zone factor on the HiHat which SD3 and a bit of tweaking allows you to do. Roland are great but a bit weird
Snare drums. It's pretty hard to get an ACOUSTIC snare drum to sound how we want. Maybe edrum makers ought to try copying a BAD cheap snare drum and then narrow that to get a good classic sound. Viokins? Nothing sounds like a Stradivarius right?

Back in the 1980s we had Simmons SDS 7 with real cymbals and it worked quite well.
As a long standing subscriber to Justin's Channel, I suggest we all get a few bottles of our favorite hard liquor, and take a shot every time Justin says "like". Just a fun party idea 🤣😁
Like. I just can't help it!
@@65Drums Like, IKR!?!? I totally like.. get it 'n' stuff! Like.. for sure. :_ Blessings! :)
Performing live since 1984
Hi,
Thanks for the great channel. What is the best 14’ snare for roland td-07? Efnote? Gewa? Thx!
More of this, Justin!
I like the podcast style video something different from the usual which is always nice
Thanks Good to know!
I have a td 17kvx with a vh-10 hi hat like you’re describing, I love it no problems
Roland drums are the best
I like the podcast like these! Perhaps you can do some drumeo type stuff and get regular acoustic drummers to try out an e kit
GREAT VIDEO!!!
Fantastic content ❤
Fantastic video!
Great discussion! I have a TD20S kit and am looking to upgrade the module. I really like the sounds of the new Strata Prime module but it doesn't appear to be fully compatible with my TD20S pads and cymbals. Any suggestions?
great video keep it up
Just one man's opinion on the subject with 35+ years of playing drums and about 20 years of that involved with owning and playing a plethora of e-drums; the cream of the crop [of physical offerings] is going to be coming out of the Roland/DW and EFNOTE camps.
I basically decided 16 years ago when I decided to go edrums that I wasn't going to be interested in modules. My TD9 was simply a necessary evil (with a few fun features to be sure), to get midi out to trigger BFD2 (now BFD3). As much as modules have improved I still think there isn't a module out there aside from maybe the Mimic, that comes close to VSTs in terms of having the closest experience to playing real kit. When my pads started to be come more trouble than they were worth it was time to upgrade and I discovered the amazing edrumin 10. Just a box that does parameters (very well) like a module but nothing built in. I've made my own hybrid kit of the new Yamaha TCS pads for snare and all the toms, with a Roland VH10, bass drum pad and cymbals. Love it. At this point I can't see myself ever wanting to use a module again.
I don't know if this is a normal thing you do (podcasting) but I can certainly use some more drum news podcast episodes!
Awesome content.
Thanks !
Price up to 6k
Thanx in advance
Got notified because of the discord, immediately searched up the video lol
Hey! :D
Mimic Pro module is still my favorite.
Ver y interesting, thx for doing this. I am now halfway the video, and am hoping for an ATV update in the second half. Is this to be expected?
Sorry no updates on ATV. That company has been treading water for several years now
Too bad, I like their sets
„Hihats are hard to get right“
Yeah true, i have the VH-10 and sure it‘s okaaay, i always thought it could be a better playing experience though. You think the Lemon 2-piece Hihat would be a noticeable upgrade or is it more or less the same?
Good shit! While you didn't directly ask them, it seems they still think the TD50X and Roland digital pack is the best on the market... what a relief!!!! /s
Enjoyed the video... but tell us Justin, why do you hate Acoustic drums so much???
I wish a digital upgrade for the TD-17 was available somehow, i love the my Td 17 but I wish the hats were better.
Hey man,
I stumbled across your pearl mimic pro video.
Dear Justin. Can you do a comparison video between strata prime and td 27kv2 sometime? Your opinion really matters.
Well if this was a monthly series, that would be cool 😉
I wish the 13 ATV snare was digital..
Wonder when and if a double bass kit will happen
We can do that for you customer no problem! I doubt a major manufacturer will do it as a standard option any time soon.
@@laptoplesI agree 100% with you..sad that theres no bell trigger..

What recommended if having problems with my rim triggers, Alesis Strike Pro SE?
Thanks
Personally, I still think the problem with e-drums is they're considerably more expensive than an acoustic drumkit in some markets, which makes them not so much advantageous, as the investment you're saving not getting an e-drum can be turned into making acoustic drums playable on certain environments.
If usa made their own products then no need to wait on global shipping from asia
Any suggestions?
still waiting for the next generation roland. in the meantime ezdrummer 3 is perfectly fine
What is the best hihat to use with the Pearl mimic pro?
none, mimic hihat sucks
The best hi hat for the Mimic Pro seems to be the ATV AD-H14 right now.
I’m happy to own three of them and love this company.
do you think a Simmons sd 1250 with midi is worth it?
What about the Roland purchase of DW and wireless, blue tooth electronic drums!

@@65Drums Thanks Justin
e-Drums have reached their apex, as they're all still using 8-bit technology.
Seems like it could really be a slick and flexible way to trigger drum sounds
Anyone have any other pie in the sky ideas?
OLDER DRUMMERS lol so true i think we also dont want to lug around a big kit , keep it simple iguess. I also have a hybrid kit small Tama
pancake kit
The Strata Prime is 5K here, which is a grand too much, especially with a history of lower quality and (even with the Strata) sub-par hi-hats compared to the EfNote and Roland digital hats. A Strata Pro with acoustic sized shells, a better hi-hat and multiple config options starting at 5 grand CAD would be reasonable I think.
Isn´t the guy on the right also known as "The Captain" from Andertons?
No
Roland is completely out of control price wise
where can i buy DW electronic symbols second ?
1 mth later and Roland release the 716 and they still haven’t utilized the 3 zone factor on the HiHat which SD3 and a bit of tweaking allows you to do. Roland are great but a bit weird
Yeah it is weird that other companies are pulling more capabilities out of Rolands own gear than they are themselves
Snare drums. It's pretty hard to get an ACOUSTIC snare drum to sound how we want. Maybe edrum makers ought to try copying a BAD cheap snare drum and then narrow that to get a good classic sound. Viokins? Nothing sounds like a Stradivarius right?
