    I was reading that one struggle in the makeup industry is no loyalty from consumers, and like you said, some brands have their "known products" but Estee Lauder is well known to change formulas, so, what they're going to do with The Ordinary might be scary. And it's sad to Becca, I purchased my first highlighter from them.

    I'm honestly here for more drugstore companies! While I do not like the fast fashion of colorpop, they really are forcing the game to change. I am also hoping that there will be a shift for more inclusion, cruelty-free, sustainable, and just "good places to work at" brands!

    • @rinav.8681
      @rinav.8681 3 роки тому +10

    • @alicel6451

      @@rinav.8681 Colorpop is drug store price with way better quality. Although if you really shop around for sale, you really can get regular drugstore stuff for close to nothing (talking about extremely couponing and stuff). They really is a game changer, make me owning much more than I need to and totally change how much I want to pay for makeup. I still splurge once awhile for Tom Ford or Pat McGrath, but I can always compromise on Colourpop and happy to not be paying more.

  • @rach9622

    I’ve been so impressed with drugstore makeup lately that it’s rare I go out of my way of high end makeup. Also I see slot more makeup brands coming out with skincare which is smart because people use skincare everyday where makeup they may not

    • @aa0821
      @aa0821 3 роки тому +1

      Same here. There was a time, in my 20s that I only bought high end because at that time drug store make up wasnt as good and I hated not being able to try it out before buying. Today I rarely ever buy anything high end. I watch some of these youtubers, like an asian lady who only talks about luxury makeup and I just cant believe the level of consumerism. And the thing is her makeup look doesnt scream I'm wearing 300 dollars worth of makeup. She looks great, not saying she doesn't but my point is absolutely no one can tell that you have high end makeup vs drugstore.

  • @sarasilva7105

    i read somewhere that colourpop is all in house. So they make a “small” quantity and see how much it sells. Then if that products are sold out that’s when they make more. That’s why so many things from colourpop sell out so quickly. Because they don’t make a large quantity. So they don’t over produce to much.

    • @carriekup
      @carriekup 3 роки тому +8

      It's accurate that they are all in house. I'm pretty sure colourpop has their own factory, etc. That's how they make things So Fast and SO affordable

    • @river8142
      @river8142 3 роки тому +11

      I feel like this is so much better in terms of lessening waste from products that don't sell well and expire. Colourpop gets a lot of flack for being fast fashion makeup, but their small batches make them completely different and so much better than the garment industry in my eyes

    I think "we" in the beauty community don't know or don't have a feeling what's selling in stores (at least pre pandemic). People aren't always buying what influencers are selling, especialy outside a certain age bracket. "We" might not be impressed by what Benefit or MAC have released in the last months or even years, but if there is one thing selling better than ever it's Hoola or Velvet Teddy. People have staples and certain brands have a reputation for those needs.

    • @mariarosemarie
      @mariarosemarie 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, before the pandemic I was one of those people. I didn't know any of these brands, I just bought what I trusted over and over again.
      Elf eyeliner. Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadow. Laura Mercier or Hourglass foundations mixed in with a Neutrogena foundation. Had a giant BH blush palette that fit all my needs. Never owned a highlight or bronzer.
      Then with the pandemic I was just so bored that I decided to jump into this community and it is SO different than what I experienced before. 90% is unnecessary consumerism. But it is fun, which I think is the point. It's kept me sane during these times. But now I'm kind of worn out.

    I was surprised to be honest, I didn’t see that coming especially that they just had a new release. I do agree with the points you mentioned especially how drugstore evolvement makes it hard for high end brands. They have to offer something extraordinary for people to pay more. If it’s a product that isn’t exciting for me like a brow pencil or a powder I would look for the least expensive product with the best quality.

    I was wondering how their holiday kits were so cheap, I bought two. One had a full size anti-fatigue under eye balm, a full size powder and a mini under eye corrector for $39. The other had a deluxe mini primer, mini highlighter (champagne pop) and a mini under eye corrector for $15. I was happy to pay those prices but I thought it was odd because the full size anti-fatigue is $32. Looking back it was a smart way to move products.

    Estee Lauder is notorious for taking over brands with a USP and decent pricing and converting them into overpriced money makers. They did the same with our Indian brand 'Forest Essentials' They acquired 20% of the brand and jacked up the prices badly.

    Loved this video, Kelly! To your points - I agree that people are realizing that more expensive does not necessarily mean better, and are shifting toward buying brands (esp at higher end price points) that are indicative of the customer’s personality/aspirations. Each brand has to show and stand for something, and it’s not just about product quality anymore.
    CT, Chanel, Tom Ford, Tatcha, PMG, Hourglass, even NARS are high-end, luxurious, bougie etc. Ilia, Kosas etc are “clean”, non-toxic (or whatever other meaningless marketing buzzword). Brands with big name celeb founders like Fenty, Huda, Selena are still fresh and “hot” enough to sell.
    But the middling ones that don’t really have a purpose or point other than producing good products (like the ones you mentioned, plus Stila, Tarte even). They’re going to be struggling HARD.
    I think those brands should strive to create HERO products that are meant to become staples in the occasional makeup user’s collection - that perfect neutral shadow palette, foundation, blush palette etc - instead of follow trends. Brands who do that already (IT Cosmetics, Bobbi, Benefit) are doing ok, I think.

    • @Nisaiueo
      @Nisaiueo 3 роки тому

      I agree. Even for people who don’t really follow beauty community, they’ll use IT cosmetics CC cream, Benefit eyebrow products, Bobbi Brown vitamin base (the thick cream primer one that everyone seems to love) because they are staple products.
      But brands like Becca, Stila, Tarte, they haven’t had anything staple like that. Tarte used to have shape tape and tried to sell shape tape range line but it failed, and shape tape wasn’t hit anymore. I’m not gonna be surprised if Tarte closed down...

    🌷While fast beauty is good for providing everyone with a large variety of make up to choose from. Sometimes the quality is hit and miss. Where as with most high end brands like “Becca,” you know that because their releases take time. They have had more time to get better quality products, to make their products. in comparison to some other high street brands.🌷
    🎀Now knowing that.”The Ordinary” is being brought out by the same company which owns Becca, I am worries now. The Ordinary is a great brand, I hope they don’t ruin it.🎀

    On a slightly related note: I make cold brew in my French press and it's a staple from May-October for me. I use 2/3 cup beans to 3 1/3 cups water and steep for 12-ish hours. I wasn’t surprised to hear that Becca was closing, but I don’t think I was expecting them to be one of the first.
    Of course, Jordana closed down in December, but they’ve been fading from store presence for awhile.
    I have also heard that while Dose of Colors isn’t closing they are leaving Ulta likely because it’s very expensive to be sold in stores and they could be struggling.
    I’d be paying more attention to the brands that Sephora/Ulta fade out. They almost do it discreetly because there’s a lot of promotion for new brands coming in, but there’s only so much shelf space in stores.
    For example, I’m pretty sure Ulta has completely stopped selling Butter London beauty and the Sephora in my area removed the Stila gondola. That’s what I would be looking into to figure out who’s doing well and who isn’t.

    I think another thing that’s contributing to a shift is the growing influence of the beauty community becoming more mainstream. Even just a few years ago, if a friend asked me for product recommendations and I gave a high end and affordable option, they’d always go for the high end (like an Urban Decay 24/7 liner over a Milani dupe) because of the general assumption that high end was better. It was baffling to me as someone who knew that the drugstore had great products, but I guess UD was more recognizable to the average consumer. Now, though, I think that the beauty community is becoming more influential even for people who wouldn’t normally watch beauty videos, and it’s shifting people’s purchasing patterns. I also think you’re spot on about highlighters not being a product that can sustain a company. When I heard they were closing, I immediately thought about buying backups of my two favorites, Champagne Pop and Opal, but then I realized that even though I don’t own either in full size, between minis and palettes, I have at least 3 of each! Those will last me forever!

    I think that the combination of price point and continued introduction of new and more affordable make up will produce more luxury brands to either close or be more innovative. The last year has brought many purchasing decisions to just "the basics" and makeup for many is not at the top of the necessity list. Skincare however has increased in demand.

    I think the fact that luxury has become more accessible, more available and more collectible factors in just as much as drugstore,. Especially with the international brands I feel like I've "aged out" of a lot of the prestige brands or that their new releases don't fit my preferences . And then the affordable prestige and indie brands and clean beauty take another chunk I probably wear 25% more luxury or uber-luxury than I did in my 30s, but a decent amount of that is indie or clean and not department store luxury. And I probably wear about 10-15% more drugstore. But not because the products are "better" compared to what they used to be, but because a lot of brands, like Elf and NYX and Milani will make risky products.

    I was saying the EXACT same thing about product type and sales!!! The highlighters are Becca's golden products are those are going to be repurchased much more infrequently than a brand who's biggest products are things like brow products, mascara, or even complexion products, so the lack of returning sales probably really hurt the brand

    I agree. As a huge fan of LORAC, I am worried that playing it safe with their eyeshadows, and not having a wide enough shade range in foundation, is going to bring them down. What I love them for the most is their nourishing mascara formulas. They give immediate glam, with long-term benefits. The foundation is amazing. And while it does have a decent shade range, and is actually good for your skin, Rare Beauty and PÜR shot LORAC out of the water with their shade ranges. And PÜR is not only nourishing, but they have their 4-in-one products that can reduce the amount of products you need to buy.
