One good thing to come out of social media is exposure of indie brands. These mega companies have massive marketing and advertising budgets and without social media indie brands wouldn’t stand a chance. I love to see indie brands grow and succeed
Unfortunately, most end up selling out to one of the big dogs for the giant paycheck, one example, IT Cosmetics selling to Loreal in 2018, for 1.2 billion cash. Most people aren't going to turn that down.
This is not limited to cosmetics. The world and our choices are owned by a few. Good research!
Yes, this is every industry :)
The parent company stuff is wild! I can't fathom how much money that man has. It upsets me to think of ppl having that much money when 15% of that could be donated to the homeless, hungry, foster homes, children's hospitals, so many things.
But we're all contributing to their wealth without even knowing who they are behind all those companies.
It’s always made me sad that it’s a better tax break to having something salvaged instead of donated. When something doesn’t sell at target or anywhere else. It’s beyond them being able to market it, they “destroy” it.
A lot of companies do donate to charity ( most likely because of the tax breaks) but hey if that is needed for charity donations then whatever.
@@rinav.8681 this very true. We are all part of that in one or another since its pretty much a monopoly
@@guardself921 I was shocked to find out that Louis Vuitton destroys unsold merchandise instead of discounting it.
@@guardself921 I work at target and the salvaged items are boxed and donated.
Interesting to note that none of the parent companies are cruelty free...they own companies which are, but it’s mind blowing to realize that in the end our money is still going into the pockets of people who could not spare a second thought towards the welfare of animals 💔
Exactly my thoughts 💭!
It’s true but some people like to think that it still helps to show brands which companies people support that are cruelty free
Something I keep meaning to Google is what a makeup company's sales were before going cruelty free and after.
@@micahsellers8594 I believed that myself for years but recently I haven’t been sure if it makes any difference...
What is worse is that L'Oreal, EL, Avon and others had ALL gone cruelty-free. Then the China market opened.
I hope you Dad is feeling better.
It's the same thing with the news media.. they're all owned by a few people at the top, which is why it's important to support independent companies when you can
That elf chipotle collab makes more sense. Crossing my fingers for a Krispy Kreme cover girl palette.
Lol 😂
Making comment sections funny again thank you for your service LOL
Or Panera/Cover Girl collab 🤣
Chipotle and ELF are not owned by the same company.
Hilarious 😂!
Honestly kinda suprised how little I actually own of these companies. Majority of my makeup is from Catrice and Essence and they belong to cosnova. I think that’s because here in Germany those two are the most frequent cruelty free drugstore brands and I don’t buy from any Loreal brand because I knew they belong to Nestle which I try to avoid.
The loreal infallible fresh wear foundation is my HG. I think it's time for me to finally try the Catrice foundation
@@theresas2520 my favourite is the ordinary serum foundation. It is also cruelty free
I love Catrice and Essence, such cute products, great price/quality
@@theresas2520 my favourite is the Catrice mattr foundation, it is actually amazing! Catrice has great products!
I would watch a whole series about you diving deep and "exposing" these conglomerates. I think as consumers it's important to know where our money is going and making sure we as a collective are using our purchasing power to dictate real change in our world, soon it may be the only power we have left.
Amen Sister!
Yeah, really kinda makes you doubt the idea of a "free market" being driven by "innovation". I love these videos so definitely continue please! Also, as an aside, praying for your father and his quick recovery.
THIS is the type of video we wanna (and need to) see!! Forget about unnecessary weekly hauls, pr unboxing and excesive consumerism beauty gurus try to push down our throats. This is much more interesting!! Thank you for doing this!!
Yes I love these types of videos to watch and to research myself for videos.
I super agree!
I’m an accountant/auditor and believe me, these companies don’t often have a choice of whether they should stay independent (i.e. not under a publicly traded, parent company). Monopoly capital is in every industry, that’s the wave of the capitalist economy all around. I’ve audited companies who did not want to sell but either a venture capital firm or a big, publicly traded conglomerate wins in the end. So it’s rarely, if ever, a choice for these brands....
Of course it’s a lot of money in cosmetics, a lot of that is socially engineered. I mean, I love makeup, of course, that’s why I watch these videos, but if you look closely at media and especially since the advent of “social” (read = anti social) media, there is a lot of stimuli telling people they aren’t good enough every second of the day! Heck they did that in the past, but I grew up in the 80s and I remember when the networks used to completely turn the TV off, now there is minimal respite to cultivate our own thoughts and get a break from all the “your not good enough” propaganda!
Of course when Loreal agrees to pay 1.2 billion cash for your company like they did with IT Cosmetics, I assume it eases the pain of becoming part of a monopoly.
@@sarasommers5420 true! lol, lol 😉🤭
P&G owns a ton of luxury beauty brands too and Pat McGrath is their global creative director for development across brands. It's FASCINATING.
I was intern at Unilever for 6 month, i was so shooked to know there are so many brand under them
This makes me want to pack my bags and move to a small cottage in the countryside and only ever buy locally and make my own things.
Its sad to see that we dont really have that many options, we are just making a few people super rich and they use that money to expand their monopoly even more
The Lauder family has a terrible (and pretty well documented) history of racism - but it’s difficult to boycott them because they own so much of the cosmetics industry. Thanks for a great video - I love learning about this!! 💜
Plenty of hate coming from L'oreal, too. I agree- it's hard to do a no buy when you disagree with company practices, but I try.
@@AKbaby89 they probably paid him for a product placement so at least he got a bag from them.
I didn’t know this. Do you have any links you can share on this issue?
First I heard of this, although not doubting its veracity. I know Ron Lauder donates plenty to Holocaust education, which is great. The Lauder family is racist to whom?
It’s the ingredients you need to look up -
This is such an interesting video. Had no idea Krispy Kreme and Covergirl had the same parent company. Surprised they haven’t done some kind of collab there!
I would love that haha
I knew about this a long time ago and it's always made me wonder if high end makeup is as "high end" as its priced, in comparison to their lower end brands. I've heard the same thing about clothing. A company can make designer Jeans and inexpensive ones in the same factory so what assures us that the more expensive ones are of better quality. I think high end makeup and drugstore makeup are a lot more alike than we think but in our heads, and I count myself, we sometimes think those higher priced brands are somehow better.
I saw a commenter on a video last year who said she worked in a large cosmetics lab, and said if you're paying more than $20.00 for any type of cosmetic product, it's too much, even for "high end". Since these larger companies can mass produce, the cost is much lower than say an indie brand. To your point..it's literally right on the $$$ 😄
Shoes too. I’ve seen expensive high heels and then went into Payless shoe source store and found the same shoes with a different label in them.
So true. I used to work in manufacturing at a corporate level for bras and the factory that made our discount branded bras also made Victoria Secret ones.
This is so interesting (and makes me want to concentrate on buying from the indie brands I love). It's so disgusting that so much wealth is held by so few people/families. They can't use it all, and they can't take it when they go. Unilever also owns Love Beauty and Planet.
As you noted with LVM and Nestle, this goes on in all other sectors. Disney owns close to two thirds of all Us media, and they are currently looking to acquire MGM as well. So much for the "free market."
Your pronunciation of Arnault was pretty close! I love a good deep-dive, and this really puts it into perspective how hard it is to boycott certain parent companies and companies in general within the cosmetics industry.
Companies buying brands sometimes are not for the profit, it’s a way to get rid of possible competitors.
According to Google $800 usd in the 40s would be equal to about $14,500 today.
It's wild to think so many brands are own only by a few powerhouses. Could you imagine what the parent companies tax papers look like.
So we should buy indie! Before the oligarchs own everything including us
Girl...for real though
That's exactly what I thought when watching this...buy indie!!!!!
@@krissymc7085 what are some good indie companies
@@ManiSoSweet Clionadh...Terramoon...Menagerie...Nomad...look them up on Instagram 😀
@@ManiSoSweet Amy Loves Makeup on YT focuses on indie brands!
Maybelline is under L'Oreal. They bought it and the name became Maybelline New York.
It's not just the beauty industry. There are also giant-parent tech and media companies that own EVERYTHING. It's scary! It's as if, these mega-mergers will continue until one day, a single CEO will dominate the world...
I'm aware of parent companies such as Unilever, Proctor and Gamble etc from my job. I work for a distributor.
The others I've read here and there while looking into makeup things. I really enjoyed this deep dive!
Wow this was interesting wierd that Nestle is in cosmetics too.
You brought up such an interesting question about whether or not Becca would have been better off remaining independent. @elles did a really great deep dive into Becca's origins and touched on that very thing.
I absolutely love these types of videos from you Kelly!!! Honestly you’re my favourite beauty channel to watch rn !!!!!
Thank you!
I love them too!
Good work! I think it's good for consumers to understand where their money is going and to consider the "choices". They only own 'everything' because we give them the dollar to acquire it, so consumers have more power than we credit to ourselves.
Very interesting! It also shows how tough it could be for an indie brand to make a dent into the industry, especially if they want to get into retail stores. You put a lot of work into this. Tfs! ❤
This was such an interesting video, Kelly! I've known most of what you've shared in this video and I find it really important for people to be more exposed to this type of information. After all, we should all be aware of where our money is going, beyond the name on the tag of that product and whether that "small" brand is cruelty-free/clean/ethical or not. Thank you and I certainly wish you'd make more videos like this one. 🥰
- a quiet, but loyal subscriber xx
Thank you! I’m glad that you enjoyed it :)
Thank you so much for this video! I am currently transitioning to cruelty-free for makeup and skincare and these parent companies really complicate things. Appreciate you taking the time to make this video!
It can be pretty confusing! Logical Harmony has a great video about parent companies and cf status if you want to hear more!
@@KellyGooch thank you I will check it out!
I have such trouble understanding why people care about how rich someone is and make negative judgements about having too much money. What does someone else’s money have to do with you? Don’t buy from them if you choose, but being very, very rich isn’t a character flaw but being envious is.
When did I say any of that in the video? This was a video about holding companies not the ethics of billionaires.
Growing up in the 1960s, both my parents worked for 2 large pharmaceutical companies, my dad at Merck and my mom at Wyeth. At the time Wyeth was owned by American Home Products so I grew up exposed to large conglomerates. If you don’t know American Home, they have all sorts of product divisions from Chef Boyardee to biotech, insecticides, and pharmaceuticals. Corporations run the world!
You’re eye shadow looks luxury!
Can’t believe it’s elf- need to invest in some of their bite size quads 😍
This needs wayy more views. I love learning this stuff more
That is the bummer, I am a very small channel and love researching but notice those type of videos don't seem to get many views.
I loved this video! I boycot Nestlé for a few years now because of their unethical Business practices. It's really hard because they own So much and so many companies
Fascinating! Thanks for the video!
I find stuff like this fascinating as well! Thanks for all the research ☺️

Wow, thanks for all the hard work on this one. That's so interesting! What I'm tired of seeing is loved products changing to cheaper formulas once they are snatched up by a conglomerate.
Very interesting topic, I really enjoyed the video 🥰
I love this stuff!!! It's Amazing how intertwined the companies are!!!!

Good job doing the research! We should all be aware of this kind of knowledge. Thank you😎 Could you make a vid about the brands we’d better buy to support the smaller ones? That will be at least as interesting as this information:)
Love these deeper dives, Kelly! 👏☺️
I was mind blown when I first realise just how much these parent companies monopolise the market 🤯💸
This was so interesting. Well done! I hope the content you produce like this gets a lot of views and positive feedback. I tend to watch beauty UA-camrs because I find it to be a fun way to relax but I really appreciated this break in the typical content and could tell you put a lot of work into this video. Thanks for teaching me something new 🤗
