Sony RX100 Hands-On Field Test (With NX70 Review)

- The Sony RX100 is the world's most powerful pocket sized camera. With such incredible specs in such a small package, there must be some compromises, right? The Camera Store's Chris Niccolls checks out this pocket powerhouse. Also, Jordan Drake takes a look at the Sony NX70 weather sealed camcorder.

I don't even care what cameras they're reviewing on this channel now, I just watch for the simple pleasure of watching an excellent review. Fantastic work guys, you manage to mix the right amount of specs/depth of knowledge with a nice level of informality and variety in terms of location and activities. Keep them coming.
OK, I am impressed by your ability to walk and climb stairs and give such a cogent review at the same time.
I AM IMPRESSED BY YOUR ABILITY TO OBSERVE THAT AS WELL.
I'm impressed by your use of the word cogent. I hadn't hear that in a while! I'm going to have to start using it :)
One of the best reviews of any camera I've watched.. Engaging and thorough, yet to the point. Wish more reviews were like this. Great job.
My two greatest fears are being on-camera, and letting Chris focus. When I come out from behind the camera, both of those fears are realized.

Was one of those who was stuck in a rut trying to figure out what compact camera to get as an everyday cam apart from a dslr... and after viewing several videos on different brands and models...and of course after viewing your review of the rx100 (concise and very informative imo) I just got myself an rx100. Cheers to your review buddy!
The comments regarding the customizable "ring" of camera are exactly what I was looking for..!!! Thank you guys...!!! Great inside of the cameras a usual.
I bought a pair of these Mk1s when they first came out, regularly using them for manual focus street photography over the last nine years, and I still think the image quality is sensational.
the 15$ rubber grip works great on this. this camera changed my life. amazing little thing
Great review!!
These guys are so articulated.
It looked so unscripted yet covers all the pros and cons I wanted to know.
As mentioned in the video, it is a 1 inch 20 megapixel Sony sensor. I'm not sure what else we could have mentioned, except that its a CMOS chip, but all large sensors now are CMOS, except in medium format and Foveon cameras.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
yup, i saw that later on, its a new camera today, thats why, i thought you guys was using one of the Canon DSLR or Panasonic one.
good one guys, keep the videos coming !
Nice to see a Sony product on this channel!
Excellent video - love the walking around. Thanks for all the information. I bought my very first DSLR (A Canon 10D) from you guys back when I lived in Calgary!
It's amazing how technology has grown in 9 years.
Shooting all our videos from behind a desk would save Jordan and I lots of time and money! We'll take it under advisement!
Chris @ The Camera Store
We all think so too, in fact everybody want's more Jordan in front of the camera except Jordan.
Chris @ The Camera Store
Chris, I enjoyed your review: You present the facts clearly and professionally, without being overly dramatic or animated, like many TV personalities today. (I hate histrionics.)
Are you planning to review the RX100 mk II? I read that the improvements make it worth the additional $150. Would love to hear your thoughts.
We haven't had a chance to try out the X20 yet, we're waiting for a nearly complete sample so we can show images. Billy from The Fuji Guys will be bringing the sample to Calgary for what will surely be a very cool episode.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Excellent information and great presence in front of a camera.
Another great pair of reviews by the best on the web. thanks.
Done. Thanks for the suggestion!
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Nice review. I work in those Husky buildings @ 8:40. Yeaahhhh. They look amazing in summer.
The IS was on, but I hadn't yet discovered the magical 'Active IS' mode. We used it later in the video and you can see the dramatic improvement it makes.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
For its size, the video is awesome. Its lens helped a lot, it blows my NEX7 a bit.
Worth the money I would say. Thanks guys for the review.
this is much more fun and informative to watch compare to digitalrev.a real review and also not boring.very good review man.
awesome review. you would deserve 10000x times more view.Best review on youtube. no doubt.
The RX100 is by far the best compact on the market. The stills and video are both the best in this form factor.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Very good review, very informative. Thanks and keep up the good work. Just ordered my Rx 100! Looking forward to take some nice pictures :)
RX100. Largest sensor by far and great video controls.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
great job as usual and expected.
though it would help a little bit in my opinion to turn on the I.S when you do the walking shot such as the one through the overhead bridge?
or using some sort of merlin steady cam? Or you guys already using that but just that Jordan walks too fast lolz
Nice! I've been waiting for a good review of this camera. While it looks to have a few minor quircks, I think this is the take any where compact that Ive been wanting for a very long time.
This channel needs more views..
The RX100 would make a killer street camera. It looks incredibly discreet, focuses as fast as any mirrorless camera, and has respectable high ISO quality plus lot's of cropping room if you need to zoom in a bit on candid people shots. Street shoot it classically at the wide angle end and you get fast wide apertures too. A little extra depth of field doesn't hurt when shooting from the hip either.
Chris @ The Camera Store
I guess flowers just felt overdone, besides you get a terrible handheld attempt at a slider shot later on of some tiny white flowers. I'm totally with you on how cool this new camera is. It really shakes up what a PnS is capable of and blurs some lines for sure.
Chris @ The Camera Store
love the show guys...keep it comin'
cheers from Saudi Arabia
very nice video, i like the professionalism
We used the Sony UWP system. Great audio, even with the included lac mic.
It's an awesome camera, go and make amazingness with it!
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
The RX100 is better in all respects than the S100, but for a lot more money. $679. The iPad 3 shoots at 30P. The Af100 is the best large chip camcorder for under $5000.
Done.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
This looks pretty cool. How does it compare to the NEX 7?
Just curious, what microphone setup are you guys using?
Would you say that it is the best "pocket" camera on the market in regards to IQ as well as all around versatility? By the way, your videos are the best on UA-cam. Thanks
This was a solid, solid review.
awesome video awesome review!
What's your preferred video camera for up to $2500?
Can't wait for an EOS - M and RX1 review, after reading some reviews online I'm on the fence about the EOS M, but then I wonder if the complaints come from nit pickers like those who criticize the iPhone 5 for being too light or because it might scratch.
Just bought my RX100 from the Camera Store today :)
2017 still have mine since day one and love it when not in the mood to carry dslr this is my go too
Wow, that was a great and informative video. Thanks, now I'm going to buy the RX100.
great videos guys please keep them coming
Does this camera film in Black AND WHITE ? GREAT review :)
1080 is available now. It takes a few minutes to process.
would be nice to have the ND filter built in and few minor fixes - just an awesome little point and shoot - I think people who are being negative about it should stop comparing to DSLR or other much larger cameras -
I'm itching to purchase this camera asap ...
The only thing that is holding me back is the possibility of Canon updating their S lineup w/c might close the gap between the image quality at a much cheaper price tag. Then again that might not happen until the end of this year.
Sad moment when you realize that you'll have to watch the video again because you were NOT paying attention to the camera the first go round.
Fantastic video... absolutely wonderful review.
I absolutely agree, thats a really impressive camera! I could see my ditching my entry level dslr fot that. But I would net, because it lacks the optical viewfinder = ) Also very nice review, I love how you always look at so many aspects of a camera! Keep up the good work!
Hey guys love the videos. Would you recommend this over the Fuji X10?
so how does the RX100 compare to my Canon S100 ? and how much is it ?
when you were talking about fps of the RX100 not matching with the cinema cameras 24fps,
it partially answered a question I have had about intermixing different video footage, so I was also wondering if you new the fps of an Ipad 3 in HD, and can it do 24fps ? also is the AF 100 still your favorite video cam for the money ? let me see how many more questions I can squeeze into one box haha, 34 characters remaining hmmmmmmmmm
Industry Tape! Available soon at The Camera Store.
The only thing that could make this review better would be to film on the camera being reviewed, ie. have two of them for review day.
nice, 2 reviews in one. should put sony nx70 in topic too. maybe get more views
Also richard freniec has a grip that can be attached to eliminate the slipping feel from teh camera
Would love to see you guys cover the mkIII when it drops next month!
With all these video shares, Sony should be paying you ;) I'm getting interested about upgrading my Sony...
To solve the ND filter problem I ordered a 52mm CarrySpeed 52mm MagFilter Threaded Adapter Ring and Hoya 52mm Circular Polarizing HD (High Density) Digital Glass Filter.
i have my rx100 since a few days. i have the feeling the pix are too often not sharp enough. does it miss focus or is it a blur? maybe the automatic doesnt work reliably enough?
also it often washes out bright parts. or is this to be expected since its not a dslr?
maybe the superior auto mode will help, have to check this out. did you test the difference?
(i like auto modes for quick shots - take it out of the pocket, shooting before the moment is gone, pocketing. and also im lazy :).)
Hi. I am new to this camera and I just want to know how do we use the 10fps burst shooting mode, as I cannot find it in the settings. And the review's awesome! :D
Thanks(:
You totally can although the zooming speed is less than desirable. You can also use it for exp. comp or picture style control, although if you delve into the picture style menu prepare for a lot of rotating to get back to normal shooting. There's too many. For my money it should be set to ISO and stay there. Jordan's steadiness is very admirable too but I think he may also have a desperate addiction to sedatives so that could explain it.
Chris @ The Camera Store
l love your reviews guys! very informative and full of personality without going offtopic! *cough* digitalrev *cough*
keep it up!
Is a magnetically-attached filter a good option?. There's a youtube video out there promoting one that would fit the RX100.
Would you recommend this camera for street photography? I'm looking for a compact camera because my dslr wont last a day without being stolen in my city, so I need something discrete and around $700, is there a better option in this price range? thanks.
it will be interesting to see how the new fuji x100s will stack up against this sony rx100...hopefully you guys will do a review.
im having trouble with this and the a57. i love to take alot of wildlife shots and portraits, and i also love to shoot great video whenever. but im stuck on what cameras better
Which out of the following as an all-rounder:
Sony Nex-5n, Nex-6 or the Nex-7?
And why?
Jay
Sony RX100 or Canon S100 for street shooting? S100 related concern is battery life and RX100's (from my point of view) is significantly bigger lens size then on S100.
BR.
Have you tried filming with this at 4k? Or maybe rendering a video at 4k..
Great video, guys!
Have you guys had a chance to try the Fujifilm X20? If so how does it stack up against the Sony?
For some reason B&H had this model on sale again in Nov. 2020. Very good price so I bought one. I hate the in-camera charging - need to buy an aftermarket charger. Bought the Sony stick-on grip expander...
Battery life? I've heard that it overheats fairly quickly during video capture.
hwo do you compare this to a G1X ?
I am in this hard situation now
please help
One thing I wish this have is like the G1X
a movable screen for self portrait
any recommendation for movable screen cameras ?
any thoughts about MV900F ?
thanks
Now that I think of it, my RX100M2 the HDMI port is now on the side and it has 1080p 24p. Looks like they fixed a couple of the issues.
Watched for the camera, subscribed for the reviewer :D
I like your reviews at least you give the pros and cons on products. It makes you think, do these manufactures actually talk to working photographers before they design a new camera. I feel sometimes they do not as you can tell on this camera by placing their cord connections on the bottom of the camera near the tripod mount.
Rock on Brian!
The NEX 7 is still far more capable and handles way better photographically but I think the RX100 CMOS does far better per square inch of sensor. It was totally Sony day that day because we also used the SONY UWP-V1 lav mic systems and we were very impressed. Nicer sounding than the Sennheiser and easier to wear and setup. I still prefer Audio Technicas for their warm rich sound though.
Chris @ The Camera Store
He doesn't like being on camera. Also, 62% of UA-cam viewers find Chris more pleasing to the eye.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
you guys should do a review on the Sony a37
Nice work ...............Hello from Italy
Watch from 5:24 on.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Spread the word!
Very good review, thanks. This is still a good buy (significantly cheaper) compared with the RX100 mk2.
Great stuff fellas.
I think the camera is applying distortion correction to its JPEGs, that's why you don't see any distortion in the test shots even at 28/105mm...
To me, the only complaint I have on this review is the speed of the speaker..So fast that it makes me feel somewhat exhausted after finished watching the clip. Like I had just come back from running outside lol.
I just love this camera .. it fit's my ED82 fieldscope perfectly ... just what you want for nature film :)
what do you think whitch one better. rx100 vs G15 vs S110?
Not yet.
got to the end of the video ...thanks for adding that in..
Superb review, thanks.
do you know when you gonna get that plus the x100s?
Can the sony rx100 mk1 stream via hdmi out on external screen while recording or only in playback view?
Should I wait for the Lumix LX7 instead of buying this?
