- In this video we, we take a look at the original model in the RX100 series, in what some call the best point and shoot cameras every made. What has changed? Can the RX100 MK1 take good images by today's standards? How does it compare to the RX100 VII? A deep review, how to buy and if it's a good value today.

Perfect timing on this video. I still use the MK1 and using it quite a lot this summer and still impressed with the images I was considering upgrading to the MK7. But with the price of the MK7 brand new and second hand it doesn’t seem worth paying that much for the upgrade.
The RX100 m1 is an old camera, but it still gives better pictures than phones today because of its large one-inch sensor

Yeah, no.
The RX100 still has its own character, as any camera does, but compare it to a Xiaomi 14 Ultra or a Vivo X100 Ultra and it's clear that the years of honing sensor and smaller lens assemblies made all the difference. These types of phone are clearly way more powerful than an RX100 MK1, and superior to even the MK7 in a lot of ways.
A few exemplary stats to make myself clear:
UltraRaw on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra (RAW stacks combined into a massively pushable/pullable DNG with minuscule, often imperceptible amounts of noise even when pushed to extremes) on a top of the line 1-inch Sony sensor, with a crazy F1.6 Leica lens assembly produces absurd images. They can be processed more than most modern APSC or Full Frame RAW files, as the combined RAW stack's latitude is way higher with way less noise (the UltraRaw file is produced almost instantaneously when shot, even though it's a stack) AND it can shoot even better video than the MK7 (although with lesser autofocus tracking) in 8K, LOG or even uncompressed RAW.
It sounds crazy, but it's all true. My previously most used camera was X-E4. Still love it to bits, but a phone able to do all that while still fitting comfortably in my jeans pocket is so appealing that I always end up not bringing the Fuji, and I never regret it.
One of the feature from the MK1 that I like over newest models is the higher flash range. I guess you didn’t play around with it too much . I have the MK1, VA and VI and can confirm that. Interiors photos bouncing the flash look just amazing. That’s why I prefer to use the MK1 for indoors family photos

What a coincidental video….I recently bought a used m2 for $150 and now I’m looking at a used mk7 for better focusing/4k video. This def is my go to for event/concert photography and I now understand why a longer zoom could be critical for composition. V/VA/Z1 would be better for low light but ultimately nobody is doing a 200mm zoom so small anymore.
I prefer using my M7 and a local store recently got 3 new M7's in so I bought a second one just in case it's the end of the line. I hope Sony comes out with an M8 and I'd be happy with powering by USB-c and some degree of weatherproofing....then better low light etc... Its just an awesome little package.

I own an RX100 M1 which can shoot great photo quality than no one can exceed since I always use an Directivity White Balance Filter to calibrate its color to rezo before taking the photo.
Are you gonna review the new Sony NX800 1” camcorder when it comes out? I wish they had put that new sensor in a new Sony RX10 V.

I've been saying for quite some time that Sony is done with the RX10 line and weren't putting any research into 1" sensors anymore. However seeing a newly developed 1" sensor in this camcorder you mention makes me rethink that.
I got the RX 400 for 400.00 and change in 2020 brand new.Can you do a video on it.I got it basically for macro,but you just showed me alot what the 100 can do.
I still use my rx100 MKI, it’s always ready for use, I own many of the same battery BX1 because of the Sony action cams and the Sony RX1 full frame. MkI . Since then I moved to the RX10 IV bridge camera. Another of the Sony camera landscape, the QX1, APS-C emount. I use my iPad mini as the screen, and controller, voitlander prime lens on the unit is a weird thing, but fun to use.

I really loved my RX100 M1 whilst it lasted. Can't remember how long I had it for, must have been more than a year and then it just died! I remember dropping it accidentally from about 3 feet on to a wooden floor, maybe once or twice, these things happen. Might have been that. Can't remember the repair bill cost, but was planning to use to buy a newer model, but never did!! I wouldn't buy second hand of this model because you just don't know if it's been dropped or not or how it was treated before. I don't think they are built very robustly so try to buy new if you can or you may buy one and it could just die on you.
I love the original RX100, I carry it all the time. Unfortunately, RX100s seem to have a poorly routed/folded electrical ribbon. This eventually fails. New ribbons are available for around £10. Replacement is a little fiddly involving soldering, but achievable with the help of YT tutorials.
@@alfo6085 Well it could be that the repair shop was not telling the truth, but I think the bill was for 60 pounds or something, at that time, in China. I can't remember what they said it was exactly. Should have just repaired it on hindsight! First time I had a camera fail on me though so was genuinely thinking of just getting a new one.
ive had the 7 for 5 years but kept the mk1 as its lighter and faster aperture lens!

Well, yes, the VII certainly has a lot more improvements like better Autofocus better screen EVF etc so I would say from the 2 to the 7 you will certainly be getting a lot more! Thanks for the comment!
Is crazy how after 2020 pocketable point and shoot cameras hauled production. The market has been taken over by smartphones.

Hey, well its certainly one of the more expensive ones. I do have a review of the consumer XF1 which uses the same sensor and will deliver a very similar image.
@@techtoremember8096 I actually watched that comparison video when I was planning to “upgrade” from the 981k to the xf1. After watching your comparison video, I decided to keep my 981k bc I like the colors and the slight better performance in low light. 💡

Aye tech I recently just bought a magnovox of the Panasonic pv 11 d and it works and everything, but the issue is when I record the footage comes out jumpy. Do you know what I can do to fix it
Did you try playing back on another vcr? Also make sure you are recording in the SP speed
@@techtoremember8096 I tried it. didn't make a difference sadly but I'm gonna save up and send it to AA electronics to fix it. Do you know how much they would charge to fix the recording mechanism? That's the only issue with it

Good question-I was thinking about that the other day. I used the name so that eventually I will branch into other areas. If I used "Cameras to remember" I would have been locked in. I Just recently started doing lenses and do plan on moving to other tech areas.
Don't know how they compare at 100% resolution, but looks like not much improved in photo quality between the I and the VII. The VII is better, but whatever was improved seems to be purely from the sensor improvements, hardware. Sony was sleeping as usual and did not catch on to computational photography at all. Seems to be the case with both, Japan and Germany; focus (pun intended) on hardware, software is an afterthought. Video on the other hand is a massive improvement, again because of the hardware. Photos can be debated (in fact, I prefer Nokia 808 PureView's photos to RX100's), but no modern smartphone can match that video quality; can't beat the optics, the sharpness, and the natural blur it gives you (lack of software and computational photography may have helped it here). Too bad it looks like Sony threw in the towel on the RX100 series, somebody more modern, like DJI, would have made it into a very competitive little camera.

You mean the MK7? There is no Mark 10 (at least that I know of). Some people find it interesting how technology evolves over time especially in this very popular RX100 series where we have gone from the original model to where we are now and what has changed.
