I notices many are questioning about the prerequisites so I thought I'd give a more refined answer without revealing too much, if possible, the story. As it was explained, to get the mount you need to fallow through the main story line. You can tell what quest givers are part of the main story by the Icon above their heads, which differs from the other quest givers. Usually will be blue icon with a gold emblem in the middle, with a gold flame like outer edge. Somethings its all gold becasue the emblem is covering the bllue but the outer flame edge border will not change. You will first see this on the innkeeper/barkeeper who will guide you through whatever zone you started in. Just look for that Icon or if your ever confused about who has the main story quests. Now, the minimal level to get the mount is 20 so to get to that level fast as well as progress through story ASAP, I recommend just doing the main quests and the guild quests of whatever class you started in. Go back and do the side quest later, or use them to level a 2nd class if you decide to take more then one. Also, in the outer world, you will see areas on your map with a purple icon. These are fate encounter and can give you a good amount of exp if done as well as completing the required kills given in your hunt log. All this will give you more than enough XP to get to 20. However the higher level you are, the less XP you will get from lower level mobs, unless they are rewarded from completed fate, quest or hunt rewards. Even then its is lessened, so keep that in mind when, for example your level 10 and see a level 3 fate encounter. So, fallowing the main quest, you will eventually be introduced to the duty finder. This a group finding tool that will put you in a party of four random players to play through and complete a dungeon. The main quest will take you through four of them as a requirement to complete, with the fourth one going straight to a boss fight. The minimal requirement level to go into a dungeon is 16, so don't worry about being below the 20 level requirement for the mount unless you don't meet the level requirements to get into said dungeon, but a few Fate encounters and side quests can remedy that issue. Also, running dungeons can give you a good amount of exp if your still needing to level to 20. After the fourth dungeon you will be in the home stretch. The quests from here on out, until you choose a company will be just story and cut scenes. There will be three separate cut scenes though so will need to do some running around to see them, so don't get too comfortable. Once those are completed, you will be allowed to join one of the three large companies. Once your accepted into a large company look for the quest giver that will give you the quest, "My Little Chocobo." This will be one of the soldiers, in or around the recruitment station who will have a Blue and gold icon above their heads and will look just like the ones from your class quests. If your still below 20 then go to a level 20 zone and do the side quests and fate encounters in that location, or run the roulette option in the duty finder until you reach he required level to take the quest. All that is needed now is to get the required seals to purchase the Chocobo Issuance from your Company quartermaster to give to the chocobo handler. These are easy to get, since Fate encounters and company related quests will give seals as a reward. For me, the best way to earn seals was using the roulette option in the duty finder. This will give you over 220 seals per run which is more then enough needed to buy the Chocobo Issuance. I didn't even leave the city. Just went into the finder, qued in and just waited for a group to form and put us into a random dungeon. May not be the fastest but I was tired of running around the other world at this point. Only had to do that in the dungeon with a group and be done with it. Once the Issuance is bought give it to the handler, name your Chocobo and done. Hope this helps answer some of the questions and give some helpful tips on getting your Chocobo mount faster. Good luck and have fun playing.
To all noob players please note that there are TWO main quests. One for your class where you go around learning things fo your guild (lancer/summoner/ect) and a second one - the “real” main quest- your going to want to do the “real” main quest NOT your class specific guid quest.
If you bought the FFXIV: A Realm Reborn Collector's Edition that's where you got the Behemoth Mount and the Barding of Light. They are included in that edition.
ExtraBaka Do major quests and read every question marks. The ingame guide is very efficient. They tell you everything you need to know in green questionmarks.
My Name Here im level 25 and have ONLY been doing main story quests and i have not reached it, but all this "around level 20 talk" is that including the 100% xp buff we all get up to level 60?
Jake Shire there are two main quests - your real main quest and your class(warrior/mage) main quest. I made that mistake and got to level 31 before realizing i was doing the wrong main quest line. Once you have finished the main quest line up till you kill one if the primals you will join one of three grand company’s (immortal flame/ adder serpent/( forgot last one) once you have joined your company and finished it until you become a third private and get 200 guildleave marks or whatever they are called then you can buy a chokobo medallion from your company quartermaster (there are two npc quartermasters make sure you talk to the right one) then take it to your main town chokobo master and get ur chokobo :D (sorry if that was hard to follow i legit started playing yesterday and got my chokobo an hour ago XD)

Ahh I don't remember buying that edition but wouldn't be surprised. Thanks for the info :)
How much game time would you imagine it'd take a new person to level up to the point where they get their own chocobo?
This helped so much! Thank you :D
That's great! glad it helped
You get bardings and mounts at different veteran ranks. That's probably where you got the barding of light and the behemoth mount.
Ahh cool thanks for the insight.
Thank you so much!!!
Glad it helped :)

Oh shit Jack Black is doing FF guides now. That's wats up!!
Love how he doesn’t show where the guild. Couldn’t of shown it on the map when teleporting
at level 30 and still can't join a grand company.
It's part of the main story line, have you been doing it?
Thanks Jack Black lol
