    I always play as a healer in a mmo. Doctor in real life, doctor in video games.

      The only downside is that you get whipped as a healer by your fellow raid/party members xD

    How I introduced my friend to this game.
    1.) Had him come over to my place.
    2.) Sat down with him and told him to play FF XIV
    3.) Had him play it and learn the game. I was there for any questions he might have.
    The same day he got back home and bought the game right away and we killin it together 😁

    Two things that will help out new players:
    1) Most towns and cities have a giant blue crystal in them called an Aetheryte; think of it as a teleport crystal. You can click on these to attune yourself to them and gain the ability to teleport to that crystal from any distance for a small gil (gold) fee. Also all major cities have smaller crystals scattered about which you can also attune yourself to so that you can teleport around inside the city (this does not cost gil). It's a good idea to run around each major city and hit up all the crystals before doing just about anything else.
    2) Once you get into the story a bit, you will be told to go to a small town called Vesper Bay. You will be told to go there a LOT. However, this small town does NOT have an Aetheryte, and there is actually a reason given in the story for this. As you might guess, this can be a bit of an inconvenience... And while you can run there on foot or use a mount, there is a much faster way to get there. Teleport to Limsa Lominsa (if you aren't already there) , go to the Arcanist's guild and take the ferry for 80 gil. You will arrive in seconds instead of (possibly several) minutes.

    • @delxiv
      @delxiv 7 років тому +1

      Bonus to about "attuning" yourself to the large, main crystal in each City.
      Find and attune yourself to every other smaller crystal in the city. These help you teleport around the city & really help you move around them quicker.
      When your get them all, extra exits will be available to you on your map that you can easily teleport to.

    One tip from a "veteran". Enjoy the experience of the game, don't rush yourself to catch up to new content(unless its what you really want to do)

      Patrick Bonomo what about subs? When mine ended I couldn't get back on without paying. Physical game and account set up and I couldn't play offline without players without paying subscription fees. Had to stop entirely cause my job ate up to much time then, and I thought once my time was over I could still play without social.

  • @brandonjustus9954
    @brandonjustus9954 7 років тому +127

    As a veteran 2.0 player and midcore raider I can give some more pointers for newbies.
    1. DO NOT RUSH there is literally no reason to.
    This game has content cycles of 6 months of top tier gear progression. What that means is while you may be behind your friends this content cycle in regards to loot lockouts and raid gear lockouts do not fret and rush through the game thinking you have to catch up. Once you get to 30 ilvls below the max if you aren't current in these 6 months of content you'll be current when the next raid cycle of 6 months happens. So if your behind take your time to get your ilvl up and gear up at your own comfort level.
    2. Don't no life this game, there is little reason to do so.
    There are plenty of options for players who have only 1-2 hours a day to gear up and meet their weekly caps for gear. Such options are daily roulettes, normal mode raids. Further more even the more hardcore players who are into raids typically spend no more than 2-3 hours each day 3 days a week raiding. And there are many statics out there that acomidate players with low hour play times. These players if they are decent enough can clear the hardest fights with these practice times in mind. So if you want to have a social life while playing a mmo this is one of the friendliest for that on the market right now
    3. Help is always available to you as long as you search for it. In ffxiv there's alot of people just hanging out of different experience levels that can certainly answer questions you have about the game or even straight up give you direct help. All you have to do is ask. Joining a good fc makes it even easier on this subject.
    4. If you are new to fight say so. People will bend over backwards to make sure you succeed in general.

      Started the free trial recently and I've absolutely fallen in love with this game. It's hard for me to put into words, but I can sum it up in 3 points.
      1) The game's aesthetic. For some reason, it absolutely epitomized what I ever wanted when I pictured mmos. I've played a couple, but this has really hooked me in a way I didn't think possible.
      2) The community. You're absolutely right, as I started a dungeon I told em I was new, and they were more than willing to deal with my slight confusion with regards to the pathway. I just played my role as tank and took the aggro and got the commendations from all 3 in the team. So far, it's been nothing but really helpful and polite people. Incredible departure from the usual.
      3) Accessibility. I usually get so overwhelmed with the systems in mmos. I used to play Guild Wars 2, and the crafting systems just seem so overbearing and literally, there's nothing that really tells you how to go about it. I usually had to have a video playing on the side, to take me step by step through processes. I've yet to need more than the wiki for this game tbh. I'm obviously still really early in, but it doesn't seem to get overly complex, rather than just more grindy (which I'm totally fine with).
      Tl;dr: It's a massively enjoyable game, and hell even the production quality of cutscenes for story content just seem far and away better than anything I've experienced in the mmo genre.

    Been playing FFXIV for almost 4 years now and I still love to come back to this video because I watched it right before I started and it gives me nostalgia for when I was experiencing the game for the first time. Fresh faced novice me in 2019 started as a Conjurer a few weeks after Shadowbringers dropped and I'm now a Reaper main with my own house, an FC I have made some fantastic friends in, and a lot of awesome memories of clearing new content on release days. My character has evolved alongside me over the last 4 years.

    I would also add a few tips for new players!
    - Bonus EXP accumulates when you log out inside a Sanctuary - A zone that has an Aetheryte Crystal at its location. A Sanctuary is also your FC House or an Inn room.
    - If you are looking to level - Never underestimate the power of an Egg! Any consumable item increases your EXP Gain by a base rate of 3% which also stacks with any EXP Enhancing gear you have.
    - An FC has the Ability to use currency that is accumulated from members doing any task to purchase buffs and boons for the Entire FC which may include more XP for Crafters, Cheaper Teleports, Less gear damage on death and a few others!
    - When you can - learn about Materia Melding! Its essential to learn how to meld as it allows you break Spiritbonded gear down to a Materia - and in turn - Enhance your existing gear. The quest to unlock it mentioned by any crafting quest line when you are required to turn in a materia Enhanced item.
    - Spiritbonded gear is denoted on your item as the white gauge on your item to the left of the green bar - once that Reaches 100% - your gear can be "Converted" into materia if you have learned about it.
    - Some dungons are NOT in the main story and require a sidequest to unlock them
    - Crafting is a class in itself - its not a tack on like WoW or ESO - it has its own abilities, levels, gear and storylines - all of them are well worth the time and is a great way to get some Gil!
    - Be Polite! Ending a dungeon with a "Great Job!" or "TY" help make the community great!
    - at Level 15 - you can do a sidequest called "Rising to the Challenge" - This quest (Available from a quest giver in the Limsa Lominsa inn) will unlock the Challenge log - a great way to earn a bit of extra Gill or XP from doing the content that the world offers you!
    There's some input from me! Hope that many new people who are here looking at this video find these tips helpful when you jump in to explore the world of Eorzea!
    See you in Doma! :D

    I have two details to add! One, I recently returned for Stormblood after taking a long break, and the game now has an option to join the novice network, with all the fancy EXP bonuses and chat access, to help get back into the swing on things.
    Two, apartments exist! One in each ward. Much, much cheaper than houses, and less of a fight for property. You don't need to demolish your room to leave an FC if you purchase a room within it, too.

    Beautifully done Hollie! I'm very new to FF14, I made a Dune-folk Lala ACN who has gone SMN. I just hit lvl 44 and plugging away through the ARR MSQ.. Though it has me scampering all over the frozen Coerthas area atm in heavily inadequate attire for the weather lol. I'm loving the story thus far, the gameplay for me as the SMN has been quite engaging and the Lala community on Balmung is quite amazing in my humble opinion. Also, Yes! Thank you for mentioning the "Novice Hall" many skip it even though the MSQ will lead you to the spot to unlock it, then as said in the video you can access it from any main city. To further add an incentive for anyone scoffing at it, for going through all of it (7 little trials) you are rewarded with very solid gear that easily last you to lvl 30 and a ring that buffs your XP gain by 30% on combat classes/jobs till lvl 31.

    The most important one is that with reaching level 50 and defeating the thought to be Story boss. You will have to do 120 Story Missions for about 20 hours (if you rush them) to get towards the next expansion and can start with level 50+ content.
    The story missions are mainly consisting of Quests that let you teleport to one zone, run for 1 minute and then you teleport to the next zone, rinse and reapeat for a few hours.

    One thing that was mentioned in passing, but is important for people starting out. In most MMOs, you pick one class/job and stick with it through the whole game. In FFXIV, you don't need alternate characters, you can switch classes on the same character and some abilities can be used cross-class. If you get one class all the way through the game, you can level up other classes and come back to your first class if your friends want to do end-game content.

  • @DoggosintheHouse
    @DoggosintheHouse 7 років тому +1

    I'm a complete newbie to MMOs and have been dabbling in Neverwinter. I find there's a lot of fighting and not much else. What I'd like to find is a world where I can do other things... crafting, fishing, gardening, etc. I'm not exactly a testosterone-charged DPS sort, but I am very enamored of samurai and would love to role play as one. Unfortunately, I'm also a little shy around strangers so joining guilds and even meeting new people can be challenging, although I'd like to experience the immersive qualities of the game.
    Thanks for the overview, Hollie. I'd be grateful if you could do a video explaining some of the mechanics and how I should go about building a character towards specific classes or jobs. Also... I"m not sure I understand how a job is different from a class. Any further details would be appreciated. I'd like to learn more about the game before I jump in, because... as you said... there's so much information it can be kinda overwhelming.
    Cheers!

    I have watched a lot of Videos about FFXIV and I am a PC player to start I have just purchased the complete game for the PS4 and am excited to see how it looks on the Big Screen! I loved how you explained everything in your video as I did have to do a lot of hunting on UA-cam to figure things out! One thing I felt you left out though was Class of Hand and Land which is something I Love to dabble in to take the Edge off of levelling with duties and I feel is a great part of the game to help you understand how to mend and add Matria. Also, one other thing that I think is important is your equipment level and how they affect things. One other thing to point out you mentioned that when you are a part of an FC you can purchase a room in your FC Estate but the requirement of Lutenenant in a Grand Company is a requirement was very confusing at first. I wish I had come across your video earlier as I think the info was very helpful and I know you might have wanted to mention some of the things I mentioned and as you stated were not trying to overload us lol.

    • @SDREHXC
      @SDREHXC 6 років тому +1

      dealwithitxo it's pretty customizable but as someone who started playing a few days ago I find it rather messy as well. Once you figure out most of the hotkeys the interface becomes much easier to navigate than trying to use the menus. You can also adjust a lot of the interface on or off as well as move aspects around and alter the size.
      I'm sure you've either figured it out or quit by now but in case anyone else reads this comment and wonders.

    You can access the hall of novice from your main menu anywhere. The Hall is a great way to get some gear around level 15. For example my Brand-new ring gives me +30% exp gain.
    I've been playing for 40 days now and I am loving it.

  • @TheGreyParse
    @TheGreyParse 7 років тому

    She's not kidding about the Novice Hall, I was seriously underestimating it until recently. I made an alt character on another server a couple weeks ago because I was just THAT bored, and I have to say the benefits it provides are insane if you're flying solo. It sets solid role outlines to follow for whatever role you choose, gives nice exp rewards, and completing them gets you a set of level 15 gear tailored to whatever role you took the classes as that's so good it easily carries you into the early 20's. And the icing on the cake is each set is topped with a ring with solid stat boosts across the board and a 30% exp bonus under level 30.

    I remember just playing this 2 weeks ago and loved it so much. Now near level 70 as a dragoon and focused on finishing the story first then focusing on trying out other jobs and maxing the crafting classes. I play on Hades server which are full of Japanese players even though I speak English. The best thing about that is that most of them are already done with dungeons and trials so they are very fast and skilled in EVERY dungeon and boss battle that I need to finish for the first time. I don't mind having to skip the cutscenes so I don't get left behind. lmao. I just follow what they do and always being kind and respectful. (Bowing and saying thank you in JP). Anyway, FFXIV was my first MMO and hoo boy it is damn good. :)

  • @kedolan4992
    @kedolan4992 7 років тому

    I feel it's worth pointing out that healer (and tank for that matter) damage is much higher than in other MMOs. In fact, due to healer damage being so decent and party size being so small, you'll be expected to help pitch in damage in dungeons, not just "if you feel like a change". Obviously keeping the party alive is your first priority and sometimes there just isn't time to dps, but in most fights there will be time for you to get hits in now and again, or at least throw a couple DOTs up on the boss or something.

    Hey Hollie, this a great overview for a potential sprout. I love it! But you forgot about the community. Don't be afraid to let people in the game know that you are new. Most of the experienced veterans will gladly help explain the mechanics of a boss or dungeon. Some tanks will slow down so you won't feel so overwhelmed if you're a healer. it was something I was very thankful for once I found out. Love you, love the channel.

    9. DPS queues can be long, and two new DPS classes will initially inflate the DPS queue like Ninja did when it was added. Try tanking, or healing, and try not to get discouraged with tanking until you're past 30 and get your tank stance.

    • @crystalgoddess4085
      @crystalgoddess4085 7 років тому

      I can second this regarding tanks, I almost always get into dungeons/trials/raids instantly if I use Paladin or Dark Knight (I cannot use Warrior for the life of me), I think the longest I was left waiting for a queue with a tank was 8 minutes.

    Longtime WoW player here, just switched to FF14 and loving it, my only problem, is that there basically isnt a chat system, sure you have FCs and linkshells, but wheres the city wide chats, and the zone chats? Huge population servers but never see anyone talk. Joining an FC was a major pain, i got to the point where i was just examining random players near me and inspecting their FCs to find one to join. 4 days played so far with a 50 DRG/51 SAM, really enjoying the combo system of both, but loving SAM more with the colorful skills and damage

    only thing you need to know - once you hit level 50 and finish the 2.0 story, you have to do mindless quests for 40 or more hours before you can even SET FOOT into the heavensward areas and really get to work in 51-60.

    My advice, and something I notice people doing. Don't try to grind and level up your main class/job. The story and related side quests will take one class to max (and might even have some quests left over). You unlock more and more ways to level up your alternate classes as game progresses. So trying to grind yourself to higher levels at early points of story is just gonna burn you out.
