I'd say the only mistake they make is introducing this at level 50. You get so many skills dropped on you that you don't have time to naturally learn the class. It's a lot easier to watch it all come together a skill or two at a time as you go. I'd actually say a rush of job quests would have been a far better way to "teach" a new Red Mage how to play.
world of warcraft does this perfect with job boosts. They force you to lay through a quest chain to earn all your abilities so you learn then at max level.
i used this guide a few months ago when i first picked up rdm and now im only 5 levels away from 70. i know you said you moved on from xiv but i hope that youre even just a little bit interested for shadowbringers!! your videos are so helpful and have a lot of information in such a short time, which is honestly really nice bc id rather not watch a 24 min video just to learn a rotation... and its really helpful that you put in the pictures and descriptions for each ability and cd. if you ever come back to xiv, id love to see more guides for other classes!! no other guide ive used has been so thorough explaining things like yours!
Thank you! I'm returning to the game after a couple of years off, and was finding myself hopelessly overwhelmed trying to go back to my SMN. So I thought I'd give RDM a try, only to watch a different guide, labelled "for beginners" and still feel totally overwhelmed. I was close to just throwing up my hands, when I saw this video. It was so much easier to understand the way you explained it, and I don't feel nearly as overwhelmed now. Don't know if I'll stick with RDM long-term or not, but it seems like a wonderful class to ease back into the game after such a long absence.
hey man. Bit late to the party but I recently started playing again and wanted to pick up Red Mage. I got so overwhelmed by all the buttons that I almost gave up (came from WoW where classes are no where near as button bloated). I watched a few guides that didnt really help me and then found this one and I gotta say, you've done an amazing job explaining this in the most beginner friendly way possible. I'm finally starting to get the hang of it! thank you so much!
Thank you for this guide! I especially like how you built the rotation from the ground up as if you only had three abilities. This is exactly how I learn new classes!
It's actually not as bad as it sounds. Do what I did, take it into potd as soon as you unlock it. A slow drip of the skills makes it a lot more easy and apparent. AT least for me that helped
Thank you for breaking down RDM in a thorough, but digestible pace. I've had friends explain the job to me before, but they go over it much too quickly for a person hearing all the skills/mechanics for the first time.
Thanks for this primer. It was easy to understand and it radically taught me the exact priority that I needed to know right off the bat and have been effectively learning the class.
Wow! Incredible guide. Very well spoken and the way you explain things is clear as glass. My wife is switching to RDM and this will be her go to video. Thank you for taking the time!
I JUST started playing FFXIV again, and your video was so helpful in helping me figure out the skills for RDM! Thanks so much for such a great explanation, you'd make a wonderful teacher :)
The other handy use for VerCure that I haven't seen mentioned is generating a dualcast proc during a phase transition. It isn't much, but it gives you a little bit of a head start on things like Susano's sword.
Also, with Dualcast, I use VeraCure as a means to not only heal myself during battle, cause I'll most likely need it anyways, but also as a means to immediate follow it with VeraRaise for someone who has died. It's like killing two birds with one stone.
Thank you so much for this guide. I've have most of this down but you have helped me refine my rotation. This video is extremely well done. Keep it up. FOR LALAFELL!!!!
tbh i spent a good 20 minutes or so messing around with the class after getting it on a training dummy and began to get an idea of it but I did so for the very reason of coming into a video such as this one. You did a great job explaining things clearly and concisely and given that I had the little bit of pre-knowledge going in, I think this will help refine how I use the class currently and for the future as I start unlocking abilities and the like. good editing and all that too, the charts were a bit complicated to understand as they expanded but i also chalk that up to being how late it is slowing my brain down a bit xD Thank you a lot for the great and helpful vid and keep up the fantastic work!
Super great guide. What makes it even better is that you put in the recommended role skills to help out the tanks and healers. SB DPS has so much damage in their kits, role utility skills never come across a DPS their thinking to use it to help keep the party in a healthy state. Once again great job on the guide :)
My only real "gripe" with the job is that it's TOO much fun to play, and apparently a good chunk of the playerbase agrees. It's almost ridiculous how many Red Mages are around right now. :P SE really did an amazing job with that... job. >_< Easily one of the most enjoyable casters i've ever played in any MMO so far.
I started playing 2 days ago.. I'm really looking forward to playing Red Mage, but at the same time intimidated. It's a lot to take in but this video was pretty insightful. Thanks for breaking it down the way you did, will definitely be coming back when I'm finally lvl 50!
I once had a douchebag in a dungeon criticize how I was playing the Red Mage. Because he clearly had no experience on how the job actually functioned and expected to see me in melee range 50% of the time. Good to see all this confirmation that I was playing it correctly all along, using just the common sense that I learned from experience.
RDM is by far my favorite job in this game, i know its simple but i love the melee/caster playstyle, its unlike basically anything in any mmo, this i by far one of the best guides i have ever watched when it comes to any video related to any mmo i have played, great work (btw i know im many years late, but i watched this back when i started ffxiv and RDM and its what made me fall inlove)
i really love how detailed and easy to follow this guide is. is there any way you would consider doing a guide for ninja as well in the same way? This has to legitimately be the best video guide i have encountered on UA-cam thus far.
I played red mage for the first time today and had no idea what I was doing lol having all those skills handed to you at once can be overwhelming, especially since you have to know how to synergize them. this video really helped. thanks
chris chris A good tip for that, that I do is to take off all your skills on your hotbar then put them back on starting from level one to where you are now. Gives you a pretty good rough idea of rotations, etc.
I've totally drunken the ver-koolaid as I absolute LOVE the Red Mage. It's the job I've been most excited about being added to the game and it hasn't dissapointed me. Even though mine is lvl 70 and i'm working towards max gear I feel like I'm no where near mastering it. Watching your opening rotation, for instance, tells me that there are several things I could be doing to increase my DPS even further. I almost never use the movement abilities except for when i'm executing the melee combo or I need to quickly get away from or to an enemy. However, I will say that I end up using vercure and verraise quite often because I often don't get very good healers when I queue for my dailies and there's no greater killer of your DPS then lying dead on the floor.
Good video man! Loved all the music you've putted in the video, nostalgic much :P Been toying with the Red Mage and will probably be the next class I lvl after I'm done with my Black Mage (god I just love Mages in FF). Pretty sure though Blue Mage is coming as a next class, probably next expansion, so curious how they'll handle it, I love the idea of getting monster's abilities, but don't know how it'll work in FFXIV.
Thank you for this run down, after enjoying samurai I figured I would level red mage, but as soon as I unlocked it I was rather bewildered by the starting spells and didn't really know where to start when it came to a basic rotation @@ now things are starting to make sense!
i just got back into ff14 - i stopped after 8 months from the relaunch - RL happens sometimes -getting back in and getting on my BLM first thing i found was the RDM unlock quest said ok lets try it.... was like wtf roflmfao - then proceeded to mess around against enemies i knew i could handle even half arsed to get the hang of the skills - just got a basic handle of it and what you said makes loads of sense from what i learned just messing around with it last night - now to see what other mischief i can find lol also great guide - paced out so you don't blow away your viewers, informative while trying to avoid droning or rambling - rare for most good job there and long enough to give yourself time to break it down while short enough not to feel like a poor quality home movie lol
as much as this might be looked down on, i feel Blue Mage would be nice as a healer, especially since it's well-known abilities are White Wind and Mighty Guard to name a couple. But if you aren't learning these spells from enemies in the world, I dont want a watered down version of it in FFXIV

I absolutely ADORE the aesthetic, and at this point in time, FFXIV Is the only RPG I've been able to find that allows you to viably play as a duelist-type character. Alisaie in DFFOO made me wish to play this game as a red mage and your video made me decide into doing it because I could understand how good it is despite the complexity (in theory) of the rotations.
Im a new/returning player to FF14, this guide is seriously awesome, in a sea of awful guides on youtube, I'm so happy to find this. Please do other jobs!
I’m a hard to die BLM but account got locked for some weird reason restarting everything I been looking forward to Red Mage but this is confusing as hell to me
Thank you very much for this video, this gave me a quick head start to the red mage :) Was hoping that there's another video for the Astrologian, debating if I should buy the MSQ token to skip the story to unlock him as I'm just about to finish the main level 50 quests.. Astro is many many more quests ahead
You can also vecure yourself for a duelcast proc to save yourself from having to hardcast veraero/thunder pre pull. Works well in dungeons when tanks are instapulling.
Gosh I ignored this in my feed for a long time. Considering how confusing RDM appears to be at face value I just assumed this was a parody video for the longest time. Thanks for the work you put into it...even though I main SAM. I'll get to RDM soon. xD
ExireHG RDM is far from confusing. If anything, it's almost as dead simple as BLM. BLM and RDM are the easiest jobs rotation wise in the entire game, and with all the mobility RDM has over BLM, it's even easier to be a good RDM than to be a good BLM.
I personally find Swiftcast extremely useful on Red Mage, though it'd definitely not intuitive to Red Mage's design. It's hard to say is definitive pick, but there are multiple times I'm happy I had it than not. I'll save a swiftcast for 1 of 2 things 1) paired with Acceleration to force a missed proc and jump-start mana rotation. 2) to quickly push the second mana over 80, or to uneven them and move to the melee portion without needing to use 2 casts to do the same.
Swiftcast is also good for raise, arguably you could use a short cast time spell then veraise but I just find swiftcast and veraise more intuitive as I can just target the KO'd person and cast rather then take a second to check if dual cast is up and, if not, cast a jolt II. It could also be that it's more instinctive to me having played WHM quite a bit but I just prefer swiftcase and raise.
personally swiftcast is good for casters to use as a rez. i get alot of favor from people for swift rezing as summoner or red mage. always swift rez healers as priority but i love saving mp for healers.
You could even use a Diversion-less opener, by pushing back Fleche+Contra Sixte back and using your Corps-a-corps or Displacement sooner. I do this personally because I give priority to the mitigation tools from Apoc+Addle, the enmity dump+Mana Regen from Lucid Dreaming is amazing, Mana Shift can be handy for your BRD in the opener (extended Foe Requiem on pull), your healers/SMN if they need MP, or even a PLD to help out their MP after their MP burn. Swiftcast is what I slot over Diversion, with the current content though, I think Diversion is more useful on Lakshmi (due to the ad phase primarily), while Swiftcast is more useful on Susano (the double Rasen Kaikyo + dice in particular would force you to lose a decent bit of uptime, Swiftcast mitigates a part of this xd)
Like I said, it's to lower your opening burst to compensate for not taking Diversion, because literally Diversion is purely used to lower the burst within the first 3 seconds, where tanks may have difficulty handling the burst aggro. (300 + 300 + 420 + 300 = 1320 potency worth of damage, 660 after Diversion.. meanwhile 600 + 130 = 730 from this setup) Contra Sixte being delayed for say 2 GCDs is about 33.333 potency loss, about 84 for Fleche. If you can even get 1 great usage of Swiftcast (300 potency on a Veraero/thunder) gives you more potency overall :p
Ok so I was right on multitarget. If more than 3 just scatter spam, if at 3 with a big mob scatter into single target and moulinet is only worthwhile to drain some mana if you're gonna cap. I wasn't sure as I cant parse on PS4, but Im glad I figured it out correctly.
The reason I love Red Mage is because I like casters, it's way better to learn fights with than Black Mage, and in case the healers are overwhelmed or dead, you are the party's last hope. Those clutch situations in runs (*and the drip*) are why I love Red Mage
I haven't unlocked Red Mage yet so when I found out that Dualcast was a passive, not a button you have to press when you want to use it like Swiftcast blows my mind.
Quick note that I thought would be nice to point out. For the opener you can just quickly heal yourself in order to proc Dualcast and not have to worry about hardcasting your first "ver" spell.
Yep! hah just caught that while going through the opener. Thanks for the sweet vid btw. Nice to get a breakdown on the options and variations the opener can take due to procs.
swiftcast is actually very essential for end game to maximize your dps especially during your starter. plus with it you can use SC in conjunction with your dual cast to get 2 insta casts out. just some food for thought.
At most it is going to be worth ~60 or less potency a min trading a Jolt for a Ver or ~30 or less potency a minute if you trade an impact for a Ver. If you hold on to it and make use of it once or twice to maintain casting during movement or to help correct a mana imbalance- you will end up with better results unless you are playing mechanically perfect 100% of the time.
I used to be a bard main. For stormblood it's now Red Mage. It felt really satisfying when I sometimes revived the healer and saved us from wiping. But you mentioned other DPS classes had revive... I never noticed.
This video is 8 minutes too long.
Fevir you explain things in such a clear and concise manner that I really appreciate.
I'd love to see more class ... classes? Hell yeah, great job buddy.

I personally find Swiftcast extremely useful on Red Mage, though it'd definitely not intuitive to Red Mage's design. It's hard to say is definitive pick, but there are multiple times I'm happy I had it than not.
I'll save a swiftcast for 1 of 2 things
1) paired with Acceleration to force a missed proc and jump-start mana rotation.
(300 + 300 + 420 + 300 = 1320 potency worth of damage, 660 after Diversion.. meanwhile 600 + 130 = 730 from this setup)
Contra Sixte being delayed for say 2 GCDs is about 33.333 potency loss, about 84 for Fleche. If you can even get 1 great usage of Swiftcast (300 potency on a Veraero/thunder) gives you more potency overall :p
Good video man, thanks for clearing some things for me ;)
Ok so I was right on multitarget. If more than 3 just scatter spam, if at 3 with a big mob scatter into single target and moulinet is only worthwhile to drain some mana if you're gonna cap. I wasn't sure as I cant parse on PS4, but Im glad I figured it out correctly.
Thank you for this guide, really helpful :)
I enjoyed your video :)
Made a rough sketch of the rotation/Opener for quick reference if you want to keep it open on another screen.

10/10 video thank you
The reason I love Red Mage is because I like casters, it's way better to learn fights with than Black Mage, and in case the healers are overwhelmed or dead, you are the party's last hope. Those clutch situations in runs (*and the drip*) are why I love Red Mage
PLZ make a review of this class for the new expantion shadowbringer 2019 plz
From a refresh in FF11 to something akin to WoW's Warlock/Mage! Alot of spell weaving to output some great damage!
Good, simple info. Thanks!
I haven't unlocked Red Mage yet so when I found out that Dualcast was a passive, not a button you have to press when you want to use it like Swiftcast blows my mind.
Great song at the background... :)
Quick note that I thought would be nice to point out. For the opener you can just quickly heal yourself in order to proc Dualcast and not have to worry about hardcasting your first "ver" spell.
It happens pre-pull.. so while that may be convenience.. the only difference is you lose out on a free 300 potency cast
Yep! hah just caught that while going through the opener. Thanks for the sweet vid btw. Nice to get a breakdown on the options and variations the opener can take due to procs.
I Loved your video, very useful! Thank you for the great guide!
swiftcast is actually very essential for end game to maximize your dps especially during your starter. plus with it you can use SC in conjunction with your dual cast to get 2 insta casts out. just some food for thought.
Fuck yes I was just looking for a guide. Love the class so much.
looove the video - it was informative and made me smile. win/win
Well written. Any chance of a SAM guide?
I used to be a bard main. For stormblood it's now Red Mage. It felt really satisfying when I sometimes revived the healer and saved us from wiping. But you mentioned other DPS classes had revive... I never noticed.
if you still havent noticed for some reason summoner the masterrace can res too
