Re-organising, when you have no garage or other area to dump stuff, and your only storage is floors away, is really difficult. You both did a great job, especially when working to a deadline. The new bathroom looks so much more welcoming and kitty has her own space too.

I'm not the only one with a storage shower! As ours doesn't work, it's a handy place to keep things actually. What a big win, not having that 'to do' glaring at them every day. My friend recently pointed out that decluttering is such 'spiritual' work - it's not just a practical task, but in decluttering we wrestle with the past, our relationship with stuff, safety, mistakes etc etc. No wonder it's so exhausting.

First, I think using the shower for storage was brilliant. I don’t think I would have thought to do that. Second, I started a Reno on my house, 3 yrs ago. Between having to gut my house, replace all floor joists, fix the foundation, replace sub-floor, add new central AC, which was installed incorrectly, and redo the roof, that I was charged double for, I have given up on this place. I have fired 3 contractors and spent $70,000, and the front part of my house is a shell. I have been living in a bedroom, and a makeshift kitchen in the back of the house. I couldn’t give this house away right now. So, I understand how the couple in this video felt stuck and overwhelmed. Third, I just ordered the clear bins you used in this video!👍

Kindness is always the answer. If you are a person who does feel much of an attachment to things, it can be confusing seeing what people keep. But we are all different. And I’ve seen the emotional struggle of decluttering in loved ones, and it is very real. And trauma impacts us all differently. Let’s all have a bit more compassion.

@9:38 To recycle nail polish, if it is still wet, it is a dangerous waste. BUT! When you keep it open and let it dry somewhere, you can throw it in general waste. That is at least how it is here in Finland.

@@SpaceMakerMethod I am not sure, but that is how we recycle it here. Maybe it loses the flammability as it dries? Same with a hairspray bottle, for example, if it still has some liquid inside, it is flammable. But when you make a hole in the bottle, you can put it to general waste.

What a great job. It is so easy to get overwhelmed and having you there to help and guide them makes it a lot easier to tackle the job. Cats love a new place to explore. I found one of my cats sleeping in a skillet I put in a donation box. At the shelter where I volunteer we have a car that was feral and now he goes in and out of the thrift store. We had a toddler bed donated and he was sleeping in it one day. A little girl lay now beside him and they cuddled while her mom shopped.

I know it’s a hassle but when the native deodorants are that small in the paper tube I take it out and set them in a small bowl in my medicine cabinet and use my hand to pick it up and rub on. yes you’ll have to wash your hands after but no guilt of not using it all up or opening a new one before it’s done. Well done buying the paper tubes ✌🏼🌱💚

So Right April.!!...disposing of things or getting them out of your space when you live in an apt is so frustrating! I live alone ( w/my kitty ) & she can't really help - but I live in a third floor walk up on the third floor & I'm always making piles by my front door to go down to the garbage/recyclables or to my car. And listen, I am blessed to have a roof over my head...it would just be so much easier if I could walk out the door & put these things in my car. Then when I get out the door I can't park by my apt so then I have to walk to where my car is parked... Anyway, I just need to be motivated & I'm not! lol! Laundry is in the basement - I haven't done laundry in almost a year!! I know disgusting and yes, it is. Those of you who live in a house w/laundry & a car parked in your driveway or right outside - don't take it for granted! Thank you April for your patient & common sense method of helping folks get to the bottom of their messes and feel better about their lives! ♥

My favorite thing to do is organizing. I love projects. How do you decide the amount of time you spend at someone’s home? I always tell my friends, try to empty their self storage when possible. Especially if they haven’t been in them for years. Get three boxes at a time and go through them. Most times you will find you don’t need it anymore or you can Consolidate it into your home. Self storage is expensive. ~ Janet 😘

    • @SpaceMakerMethod
      @SpaceMakerMethod  Рік тому +2

Hi! It really just depends. For this project we were:
      - balancing how much time I had available to work there/balancing how much time I could take off from all the admin work I do for TSD
-considered how much time she could take off from work (we landed on a 1/2 day TH, F M & full days SAT & SUN)
-the cost of staying in a location during that time (miami happened to be VERY expensive)
      -the size of the project
      -etc.
We try to do a lot of work in a short amount of time because it's better for everyone involved, though not easy.

I feel so bad, that was definitely trauma based. I'm glad you were there for them because now, even though it is 5 years later, they can start healing. I dont think people understand the impact a messy disorganized space actually has on the psyche. (Been there a lifetime ago) even now, after I film, if I don't put everything back right away I feel it. (Or maybe I have a touch of OCD lol) a clean decluttered and organized space is life as far as I'm concerned. I tried to impart this on my girls from a very young age. No3 is like me, now finally gets it lol and no1 is like her father (sigh) but has 2 young kids and is very busy lol, I tried, gave them my knowledge and now they have to find their own way lol. I must say though, I am jealous of the storage in her bathroom. We haven't renovated ours yet though, it's pretty much all that's left to do, woo hoo, I cannot wait. Omg sooooooo satisfying! And that cat is so cute 🐈. I feel like all the stuff you are doing now is going to save them so much time in the future…. Less time looking for, less time cleaning, less money re buying things they already had, and less money wasted on things going bad when you don’t use them in time. Love how they are embracing getting rid of thing! I also think once you have left it may give them more confidence to let go of more once they see how much nicer it is to live with less…… one step at a time! The litter tray in the shower is a great idea!

The shower is not a good idea to store things. We did this because we lived in a small flat (it was only meant to be temporary while I did some decorating in the living room/kitchen.) but the items were in there longer than I wanted them to be and when I took them out when we moved last year, quite a number of the items had gone mouldy and had to be thrown. We are living in a bungalow now and I have space for most of my things without them being in hoard piles. I still need to go through socks/under wear, organize our cds/dvds, get a couple of new bookcases and organize what is left of my art/craft/sewing stuff but it is a lot better. Small homes are a disaster when it comes to trying to organize things.

Can so relate to being drawn to something and working with that for a small victory. I often hop from one set of items to another and end up doing more than I initially intended to do. When stuffs organised I find it so much easier to let go and de clutter.
