  • Today we're decluttering this VERY CLUTTERED refrigerator after 2 years of not getting cleaned out. I'm so excited for this transformation and you're going to be shocked by all that we decluttered in this refrigerator. I knew it was bad, but I could never have imagined there'd be so much. This is a good one!

This was the declutter I had been waiting for, but I'm still shocked at the results! We filmed this over a month ago and I was recently at her house and I can say that of all the spaces we've worked in, this one has stayed the cleanest and most organized (you know I had to give it a little look when I visited 😊). We'll be back soon with more work in her house, but next week we're going to work in my closet because it's been a total disaster lately and needs some help. Thanks for watching everyone! See you next week.

What makes cleaning the fridge easier for me is before I go food shopping I clear out the refrigerator. Every week even though it is hard. Makes more room for food. I only clean/scrub it once a month makes it more bearable. Now the rest of the house not easy it gets delayed a lot. Hugs

Every Tuesday, before trash day on Wednesday, I go through my fridge to see what I can throw out. That way I stay on top of getting rid of stuff. I clean out my freezer about every 4 to 6 months. When I see that there have been things "hanging out" in my freezer to long I check the dates to see if I need to use it or throw it away. Labeling "leftovers" with dates is a good way to stay on track of stuff in the fridge. With food prices going up almost every month I try to use up fresh food faster and use our "leftovers or meal preps" and not be wasteful. My "rule" is to use up or toss condiments before I open a few one and to not get too many salad dressings open at once.

I also find having a list of food on the front of the fridge that I can make with what’s in there (or what leftovers), makes it easier to use things up because I’m looking at the name of a meal, and not having the use brain power to think what i can make from ingredients I can’t necessarily see easily in the fridge. Also a good way to use up food that will expire because you can put it at the top of the list. If you feel meal planning is too restrictive for you this is an easy alternative that gives you more flexibility

    • @sheila3936
      @sheila3936 Рік тому +1

That’s what I do. Once in a while I go through my fridge, freezers and pantry and write a list of all the different meals I can make. Then I pick from that based on expiration and my day (time available, energy level, cravings). No more staring into the fridge wondering what to make when my brain is too tired to think and it’s flexible for when things change unexpectedly.

There's got to be a why so that it can be worked on. My concern is that it will happen again. Mind you I wouldn't mind more videos with the both of you again 😅 your dynamic is brilliant. First, remember that THEY ARE NOT EXPIRATION DATES... Everyone makes that mistake. Food in the US is not tested for when it goes 'bad', except for Baby food. They are 'best by' dates, which only means that the manufacturer doesn't want to hear if they don't taste the best after that. Certainly I've used things like packaged pasta WELL past that date and it's not an issue. Second, Eunice is right that you have to be in the right frame of mind. There are days where I can't bear to throw anything away. Other days, you can do it with no regrets... Listen to your mood, and do something that fits your mindset for today!

Great work! And a testament to the power of “body doubling” - yes, Eunice did it herself, but there was real power in having you there to keep her going. I do my best not to take sauce packets or to use them right away even if I have my own soy sauce or whatever because they multiply in the fridge and are so hard to store. Lots of good intentions in the freezer, saving food to eat later, but it seemed out of sight was out of mind. Freezer inventory is especially hard to manage.

We used to have a freezer full of "red surprise", "yellow surprise", "green surprise" and "brown surprise" - unlabelled and undated piles of who knows what! Made for some interesting meal times. I recently bought a small folding table (3 feet by 2 feet??) that folds like an ironing board. I plan to use it to put stuff on that I pull out of drawers/cabinets to go through. I am older and have arthritis so I used it as an excuse to not declutter. Now, hopefully, this will act as an aid to allow me to organize while standing, (along with small bins to empty drawers in to sort) as I would have great trouble getting up off the floor!! Hehe!😃

I find if I get groceries delivered every week and a half, that’s about the amount of time most produce will take to go bad in the fridge (or I will have eaten it ideally!). That way my fridge is 90% empty when I put my shopping away, so I can really easily check any dates and wipe the shelves if needed. I tend to do my freezer every 3 months on the same basis. I find keeping the inventory low means I waste stuff less, and it’s just much easier to keep on top of. Every now and again if I notice the freezer getting full I won’t buy groceries for a week and make myself use up the food in the freezer….. that works pretty well! I think Covid helped in a way, because I was thinking before I should have things “just in case”…. But even during a global pandemic we could still get food, so I only keep really minimal back stock of things. (Of course a bit different if you live in a more remote place where you get snowed in etc). I love this fridge declutter and hope Eunis find cooking and putting groceries away a much calmer experience now!

I just love seeing what other people have in their fridge/eat. Something i just thought about is how your eating habits really determine if you need to declutter. And a random comment: I tend to toss my condiments sporadically. Like when I’m cooking and I need something, I’ll grab a few bottles and check them -or when I bring home shopping and need the space.😆. In this way I keep the rotation pretty current. It’s just what works for my brain.🤷🏼‍♀️
    Great job Eunice!!! 👍🥰👍

Is that the fridge beeping because the door is open? I need this for my freezer. I have unintentionally defrosted it more than once by leaving the door open just a crack.

Oh my goodness, I was tired on Eunice's behalf! I almost fell in a heap when you insisted on the freezer as well. You are a hard taskmaster! I was on the fence about the chocolates and the cake - it's been two years...but...cake 😉 Best not to risk it I guess - but I might have anyway!
I was on this side of the screen throwing fists in the air for Eunice, you go girl! You did it and it's bloody well done and you didn't have to go back to it tomorrow, and I bet as much as it was a huge pain in the butt, it was nice the next morning when you realised you could plan a menu more easily with the space available to hold your now and not all crowded with things you couldn't use from yesterdays. Also, Eunice's fridge has a little fridge in the door - I had to watch it a few times to understand. I love that fridge!

You don’t need to be “in the mood”. Just don’t buy more food, etc when your spaces are crammed and pick up after yourself.what a waste!

When we've cleaned out our freezer, the things that make me angry to toss out are the ones where you pass the item back and forth to try to identify what it is. We're not perfect now, but we've mostly solved that problem by making good use of a Sharpie marker and a roll of masking tape. The masking tape sticks well to plastic and glass lids, and comes off easy for washing. You can use the Sharpie directly on plastic bags. If you make sure that leftovers and repackaged things don't go in the freezer without being labeled with what it is and the date, then you might have old stuff but you rarely have stuff you can't identify.
Then, once in a while I refuse to let us buy more frozen stuff until we make a concerted effort to eat what we already have. We always manage to find things that we forgot were in there.

I remember my parents using that sharpie system and writing a date on it (especially for freshly caught fish). It really does help!

No judgement, Eunice - when I clean my freezer, every six months or so, I throw away expired and freezer-burned food, too - I’m trying to be more mindful, buy less and use it all before buying more, but it’s a challenge! I know there are hungry people in the world and I feel guilty throwing out food, but I also know we won’t eat it. I’m also TRYING to clean my freezer more often, which would really help with the expired food problem. I already have a system for cleaning the fridge - every Thursday evening I go through looking for leftovers that need to go, etc. - I try to finish before the annoying fridge alarm goes off. Then I make a shopping list, and shop on Friday. Friday is also garbage/recycling/compost pick up day, so anything thrown out goes away immediately. If there are a lot of edible leftovers, we have ‘potluck’ (fridge luck?😁) for dinner on Friday. Doesn’t happen often because I manage leftovers aggressively, using them for packed lunches and after-school snacks, until they’re GONE! Good luck keeping your fridge beautiful! And your skin really is flawless! You clearly know skin care very well!

My boyfriend an I reorganzied our fridge by deviding it into categories like meat/fish, vegetables, frozen fruits/ice cream etc.. It helps us a lot to waste less food and we know much faster where to look for certain ingredients, it saves searching time ;)

This is something we have all done. Life happens and diets change we live in different situations’ family unit couple single and we forget to adapt out shopping and consuming habits. One thing that helped me smaller fridge and freezer the rotation and space means less waste. Plus you can see what you have - Eunice you will get there. April don’t under estimate the role you played. Having a buddy can make a big difference. Loving this series and looking forward to see your big move and organisation x

YOU are Eunice's cheerleader! Everybody needs a cheerleader. And Eunice.... consider ALL of us in subscriber-land who have now been motivated by YOUR efforts to tackle something that seems overwhelming. We lost our home to fire last year and I am determined NOTHING will go into our new space that hasn't been chosen. No boxes of stuff, no just move it over and I'll go thru it later. Done that before and it never ends well. Congratulations!
