Yes, it does, certainly all of your notebooks would switch for hers, not sure about the reading data, but I presume so. But the reading files would still be on the device, so probably the reading data would just load up to whichever profile is logged in.

with working from home now a thing, I imagine the X can stay safe at home in 99% of cases. Or buy the eink screen for home. And the TUC (Pro) is the device to carry around. Edit: I'm not saying buy both, just depending on the needs and setup. PS. there are light full key sized keyboards under 300g that beat the case one in every aspect. So one can still bundle the whole thing in under 1kg. Is 1kg too much for an e-reader? SURE. But is that more than just an e-reader - most definitely :-)

I might help with this Mark. I've been using paper and pencil for a lot more decades. I sit most days in front of a computer and there is always a pad and pencil to the right of my keyboard. Occasionally I use the Tab-X for taking notes during meetings and will probably do so more. it really is nice for hand-writing. I find the built in NeoReader ideal for that. I did try the Adobe PDF reader, but as Boox devices run Android, loading the Adobe App from the play store gets you the "mobile" version which has less features. There may be ways around that , but I haven't worked it out yet. There are a few forums for e-ink devices and even Boox specific ones, so there is almost certainly a body of knowledge about what apps works for particular needs. The built in note app works fine for my narrow use-case.

@@xyzoub I actually returned it after two weeks. For multiple reasons, but I do miss it! 1) very limited accessories, only cover available at that time was $50 from Boox. 2) no place for the magnetic pen to attach to (dumb) 3) no color but this I knew but knowing a color option in that size could be coming I just could rest in asy knowing that, 4) limited ability for enterprise use (I knew this but it bugged me) 5) it was actually a little large for reading in bed! 6) it was $900!! I just could not help but think it was a very expensive tablet that was capable of so much but just fell short in some important areas and that maybe my money was best spent on something more mature and professional. I ended up with a MS Surface Pro 9. I use it at work but really should have gone with the iPad Pro. The Surface is just heavy and bulky for a tablet. It's basically a laptop.
I'm still holding out for a more mature, large screen color e-ink tablet! Although I might even settle for a 10" as it might be more comfortable for reading at bedtime. I do miss how the Tab X looked and felt. It wrote fantastically, and reading options were pretty good. A newer Android version would be a much welcome addition!! And a bit of a faster processor would be really nice.

Excellent review. And no, you weren't "geeking out" for me. The uses cases and features of the e-ink devices need to be highlighted for anyone wondering whether it might be useful for them. UA-cam popped this in my feed as I am considering a Tab Ultra C. Confession though, I have been using a Tab X for about 6 months now. I purely uses it for professional productivity: note taking on plans out in the field. The plans are PDFs and I use the built in Neo Reader. With the pandemic and working from home I lost access to my companies 40" wide plotters. The A4 sized tab X is actually more convenient than handling a large paper plan. Pinch-and-zoom and pan on an A4 screen is actually not bad. There are a few things you said that really nailed it with this device. "Don't compromise on space". - I had tried the plan viewing on an A5 Boox and it was just too small to be convenient. You also said "Bridging the gap between digital and analogue". Taking hand-written notes directly on a PDF is much quicker than typing for me at least. I have found that I need the tactile feel of pencil on paper to make my hand-writing legible and the Tab X is very close to that feel. If I do make a mistake, the eraser on the other end of the pen works perfectly. The low power consumption of e-ink is another good point. I can spend the day driving around the country using the Tab X for hours on end as I know the battery last weeks. Do I miss colour? No, not really. My use cases are with mostly black-and-white documents and the grey scale of the notes are fine. The exported results are in colour on an LCD. My eyes are too old to use an A5 device for productivity, I only use the Boox A5 devices for e-reading and for that I hold it before my eyes like a paper book. If you are happy using an A5 device and would really like colour, then go for the Tab Ultra C. If you really prefer A4, then the Tab-X. "Do I wait in case they bring out an A4 colour e-ink device?" is a valid question. E-ink devices are more expensive than most tablets. I'm not made of money and through my work I can salary-sacrifice a tablet and pay for it tax-free, 10% off here in Australia. But only once a year, so I am anxiously waiting for the new tax year on October 1st to get a Tab Ultra C. There have been no hints of anyone coming out with 13" Kalideo 3 device so far that I have heard so I am willing to take a punt.

    • @alcampbell5831
      @alcampbell5831 Рік тому

@benjaminsommer2523 Notes are stored on the comments layer on the pdf, if that's the right term. I take handwritten notes in the Neoreader on the Tab X and they are on the same comments layer when opened in the Adobe Acrobat reader on a windows laptop. Exactly as written. I can't comment on use in the cloud as my work IT department block that for security, so I have to use e-mail or USB, but I don't think using the cloud would be any different. I have tried using the Adobe Reader on the Tab X but the lag before a pen stroke appears on the screen is so large as to be unusable for me.

    • @alcampbell5831
      @alcampbell5831 Рік тому

@benjaminsommer2523 Benjamin, I am just using the free Adobe Reader app, not the editing version, as my company won't pay for the licenses. So the comments layer cannot be turned off. Or if it can, I don't know how. If i have already added a comment such as a text box in Adobe reader, when I first open it in the Boox Neo Reader a pop-up appears asking "Detecting and importing embedded data may take a long time. Are you sure you want to continue?" with 3 options: [Cancel] [Merge] [Overwrite]. I have been unable to discern a difference between Overwrite and Merge. Notes added in Neo reader appear as graphics on the comments layer when subsequently opened in Adobe Reader, already displayed just as objects added in Adobe. You can move or delete them in Adobe Reader. Adobe does not issue warnings that the comments are not to standard or the like. It either does not know or care that they were added by non Adobe software. Text Boxes added in Neo Reader do give a warning about the font when opened in Adobe but has no issues extracting the text. I don't know if I mentioned but my use case is floor plans for a large telco. The Tab X was considered as part of a "kit" for site visits, i.e. purchasing 2 or 3 to be managed by the IT department and kept centrally (we are all working from home). I would not recommend this for my company. The Boox software is a little buggy and frustrating and does take some getting used to. For instance sometimes the neo reader refuses to respond to the pen. The experience may be too annoying for people other users. Although, your experience may be different. My company decided to source some "toughend" tablets instead of the Tab X. Something man--stream from Samsung say might be a better option. A Samsung S9 Ultra with a suitable screen protector/layer would be very nice. Full colour. Albeit very expensive. I find panning, zooming and making notes on the floor plan while walking around a site more convenient than wrestling with a stack of A4 sheets of paper. Am I more productive? Perhaps.

What would be a winning format for me would be the wide black margin on the left and on the long side, like the 10.3”, so it could be used for hand held reading in the portrait orientation, preferably with a Kaleido 3 color screen. Also preferably with two Bigme type cameras hidden within that wide black side margin like Bigme does, instead of that teeter-totter fulcrum lump of a camera bulge Boox has now. Add a full size keyboard case option connected with pogo pins, for using it as a traditional display in landscape orientation, and sign me up.

I don't think they will produce a color version in the near future, but I could be wrong. For color they need to increase screen resolution, and there's absolutely nothing to demonstrate it's being done. A 207 DPI in mono will only give 100 DPI in color, which is too low for image resolution. No 13.3" eink screen exists with more than 207 DPI. They need to first produce a 13.3" mono screen with 300 DPI (which would give 150 DPI color, since it's half the black & white resolution), but such a high DPI screen has inherent battery life and financial issues; the size and resolution is reaching present e-ink technological limits.
I think they'll probably release a Tab X Pro mono next; the same device but more developped.

It's got to be boox, frankly. They're the only ones that will really do word and powerpoint justice! I would go for. The boox Tab Ultra C.

Don't compare with iPad. It's a non-sense comparission. Different goals and different in many ways.

    The perfect device would be:
    1. Tab X sized display.
    2. Ultra C flexbility
    3. Kindle Scribe Stylus feel (which is a 9 out of 10 compared to Ultra C's 5 out of 10)
    4. Kindle Scribe's perceived resolution at 300dpi (which is much better than Ultra C's 300dpi. Even at full front light, the Utra C isn't as good as the Kindle Scribe. Its screen is too dark without the full light.)
Plus the Ultra C may be a full Android 11 tablet but it is glitchy. The Chrome and Gmail app icons never display. I have to open them from Google Play Store each time. Also, it can sometimes be very slow.
The biggest let down is the glassy stylus. My son said it is no where near the Kindle Scribe, and strangely much worse than the stylus on his Lenovo laptop.
What I find though is its functionality and flexibility comes in very very handy.
    Is a really strange beast:
    1. Stylus not good enough
    2. Background too dark.
    3. Not big enough
    4. Not good enough compared to any laptop/tablet
    5. Awkward slowness and response at times. The Kindle Scribe is much faster in response.
    And yet....
This strange beast has so much functionality that I ended up doing things on it I couldn't do easily otherwise.
For now, throwing both the Ultra C and the Scribe in the same bag. Using them both side by side.
    Strange? No!
In the old days we had a book to read, and a note pad. It's not that odd.
So the Ultra C and Scribe combo is as close to that as possible. For now....

How can you be serious! The iPad has a better screen, more apps and the pro versions are quicker than most current laptops, PC or MAC!!!!!

"Better" screen is debatable. The whole point of e-ink displays is that you don't need to be shining a flashlight into your eyeballs all the time. It's more like looking at a sheet of paper.

eInk writes like you're writing on paper, reading paper. The iPad doesnt do that.

    Hello everyone,
I am currently on the lookout for a digital device that can serve as a replacement for my laptop, computer, or tablet, without causing strain or discomfort to my eyes and head during extended use. Through my research, I have identified two technologies that seem to fulfill this requirement: R-lcd and E-Ink. However, I am open to being corrected if there are other suitable options available.
In my quest for the ideal device, I have established the following criteria:
    1. Internet access: The device should enable me to fully enjoy the benefits of the digital world.
    2. Comfortable usage: I am seeking a device that I can comfortably work on and view for extended periods.
    3. Reduced reliance on traditional computers/tablets: Ideally, the device should minimize the need for a regular computer or tablet for work, information consumption, and productivity purposes. While video playback is not crucial, it would be a bonus.
After extensive browsing and watching various videos, I have come across several options that might be suitable, varying in terms of price:
    1. Color E-ink tablets, such as Onyx Tab Ultra C or BigMe.
    2. B&W E-ink Big Tablets, like Onyx boox max Lumi or tab X.
    3. Lenovo Twist models that combine E-ink and OLED.
    4. A separate screen that supports either of these technologies.
Considering cost-effectiveness for my current needs, I am inclined towards two options:
    a) Onyx Tab X or Lumi, due to their larger screens suitable for work. I may consider attaching a smaller tablet for content consumption, such as reading, in the future.
    or
    b) Onyx Tab Ultra C or BigMe, as they offer color support, which can be advantageous. However, I have discovered some drawbacks associated with these models as well.
I would greatly appreciate your input and opinions on this matter.
Additionally, I have a couple of questions:
    1. Where is the recommended place to purchase these products? Should I buy them immediately or wait for a specific timeframe or purchase exclusively from the official store?
    2. If you have any other product recommendations that align with my requirements, I would welcome your suggestions.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Without a commitment to security by Boox, they absolutely can't be taken seriously.

@@fionatischhauser907 Hey, for sure! The hardware is nice, but they run on infrequently updated, potentially unsupported versions of Android. Meaning that using one of these could be a security exposure for any data that you keep on them, and possibly any devices you keep on the same network.
