Nothing other than thank you for the open and interesting update. Nice to feel the bikes are being developed past the showroom performance and fit and finish.
Great to listen to a fellow Geordie talk so knowledgeably about some great motorcycles. If I lived in the UK I would certainly be buying parts from you because you are clearly a true enthusiast and are in it for the passion rather than just the money. Thank you.
Fitted the new camshaft on my 2021 Himalayan with 16 tooth sprocket and Tec air filter overwinter 2022/3. Have to say that these modifications did improve the bikes performance and slightly increased fuel economy. Now able to get 60 mph at about 4,200 rpm in 5th gear. Also, after resetting the tappet clearances as advised here, now better. However, the cam on my eu5 machine was slightly different, but replaced immediately. Many thanks George.
You are spot on with your thinking on the Meteor, I am in my sixties and have one on order as a replacement for my 750 which is just to big for me and on the roads here in Devon 60mph is plenty.
Thanks for all of the testing on the Himalayan. I'll definitely be interested in getting one of the rings for the air box. I ride mine without a wind screen for the reason you described. I think the best solution might be to make a cover that fits tight to the back of the gauge cluster to cover the wiring instead of a very short wind screen.
Here in Brazil,i've installed a bigger oil radiator! Double the size of the original. We're facing some overheat and knocking problems after some time im highway speeds!
Thanks for bringing out stuff for the Meteor! I'm an older, retired guy (turning 60 this month), and I got the Meteor because I wanted something lighter weight, easier to manage, economical, easy to work on, and it LOOKS GREAT! As soon as I saw it, I wanted one. I already have the DNA filter and intake installed, and they make a difference, I shall keep an eye on this space and your website to see when the new cam comes out. Cheers!
Marky, you’re sounding old before your time buddy! ( I’m 68 now retired 4 years) but even then was too soon. I have a nice home repair shop keeping my family’s cars and bikes on the road so keeping myself busy, but recently my wife (same age) has gone back to work to keep her self occupied. If you’re reasonably fit I hope you find something productive to keep yourself well occupied. Live long and prosper buddy. 🖖
I cutted my air filter cap (still have the stock air filter), and bloqued the hot air comming from the engine. I'm surprised, to be honest, the bike runs smoother even in low revs (around 3-4k rpm) makes me feel more confortable about changing gears up on lower revs than before. Thanks for that George. I'm a very passionate reader of your work. Waiting for a badge of camshafts to get the air filter and the cams. Hope we can make them come all the way to Costa Rica.
Great work 👍 At 16:50 a bell mouth shape intake would be ideal. Diverting air from behind the engine away to the sides before it heats up the airbox could work as well. Maybe a small convex shape firewall just in front of the air box might work.
Thank you for for this vid and it's great to see all the info and testing you're doing on Royal Enfield bikes. I've had my Fireball for 3 weeks now and really enjoying it, had to wait a couple of months for it but was worth the wait. I had a '90 Virago 1100 that I bought in 1990 that I had for years and has been my favorite. I had Rob North here in San Diego make some forward controls for it a couple of months after I bought it and I also did a few changes myself. Barend mirrors and a touring screen is the only addition I need for the Meteor as soon as we get them in California; for right now....
Regarding Meteor, I've bought one, a supernova and I have a Z1000SX, KTM1290SAS, CRF300Rally and CB500F,... I bought it because I like the look of it and it is great in Mid Wales for just plodding around, just enjoying the environment and very economical to run, getting 105mpg, yes it's slow, but in a good way, If I want to go fast I use one of my big bikes, but I actually really like the looks of the meteor and it's value for money, as the fit & finish is very good, (only criticism is harsh crashy suspension) just a fun ride for an old man !! Anything on 2 wheels is good !!!!
Hello. Congratulations on the video and thank you. For the Himalayan, in Spain, with a variable climate (hot in summer and cold in winter) a valve clearance of 0.12-0.15 (mm) in intake and 0.25 (mm) in exhaust works correctly.
What do people use in Spain for cruisers and longer distances. Am gonna learn on a Zontes G1 as a few spanish chaps told me works fine in Spain but next years will need something bigger perhaps.
Hi, thanks for the video I think your doing amazing and really interesting work there 👏👍 In my days of an apprentice mechanic the words you were looking from to explain cold air flow was …”Volumetric Efficiency” the cooler the air the more oxygen and bigger bang.
Had to Replace a piston/cylinder so I put your cam in at the same time. Just finished the painfully slow 300 mile part of the break in and I have to say the cam runs so smooth and pulls a larger front sprocket easily. I "may" have cheated a bit and found out the top end is great too. More info to come
In my experience, the catalyst is the limiting factor. Only when this is removed can a new camshaft or a new air filter develop its performance.I ride a Himalayan Scram 411, Euro 5
Looking forward to seeing your Stella, (I haven’t seen one close up yet) but a friend says it has more of the Classic’s features but with the more modern-looking alloy wheels, that I prefer.👍
I just bought a Scram. I want to install the cam and keep the warranty. At what mileage do you recommend the group of mods on the bike. I live in Houston Texas
The himi engine has a lot of rubber vibration dampers stuffed into the cooling fins. I wonder how much they impede the airflow over the engine. Have you done any work on heat management and if there is any benefit in removing some/all of them. Maybe just increases the noise level. Thoughts?
How about a rear carrier/cover plate to replace the rear seat for the Meteor 350…this would give it a lovely bobber look and some practicality. I doubt many Meteors in the UK will see pillion use anyway 🤷🏻
I totally get your reasoning as to why the Meteor is becoming so popular…but I think the overriding reason is cost. The pressure on personal finances, with the cost of living rising and salaries stagnant or dropping, means people cannot afford £10k - £15k plus for a motorcycle. I think people are also becoming wise to the balloon payment con, where you never own the bike and still owe thousands at the end of the finance term…quite simply RE are providing a range of excellent motorcycles at an affordable price point.
I did a test dive last week on a Meteor and it did not wanted to go faster than 115km/u. The bike dove nice but is nothing for me, my back started to hurt after 5 minutes because the way you sit on it. So it will be a Interceptor, the weight is not a lot different either.
What is the cost of the cam for the Himalayan and how do I get one in Ecuador? Ideally it would need to be carried in by someone flying here since mailing anything to Ecuador really doesn’t work out well.
Being 6’2” I have a Tiger 800 and the turbulence from the stock screen was terrible and fatiguing. I swapped this for a shorter ‘powerbronze’ and it’s now a dream.
yes cold air makes lots of sense saving up for classic first thought is a snorkel extension, literally a pipe that runs back and up, then vertical up into clean air. with a 60 mph max speed limit, I do not need more top speed. it is hill climbing ability that concerns me
I put the stock filter cover back on my euro 5 Himalayan I didn’t get any more performance. The fuel economy went down I lost around 75 Ks range. It sounded horrible and there was noticeably more vibration. Just the DNA filter is great, tho it’s not quicker to 100 kph it has more pull and it smooths the Himalayan out noticeably. That is totally worth it but not the cover, in my experience. I am selling the air filter cover.
I think a 650 cruiser will do well now HD don't do the 883 iron , not my cup of tea but there are people that still want cruisers, if the quality is the same as The Meteor it'll look sweet 👍
The best thing about the twin is it actually sounds fantastic for a 650cc... very reminiscent of a V twin. Especially when fitted with catless headers and aftermarket cans.
Really appreciate the great work on the Himi but share others frustration at not being able to take advantage of your developments due to the issues on the production side. Can’t even get the USA Tec folks to respond to emails. Still respect the hard work on your end and hope the rest sorts out. Ride safe!
Does your DNA plate/filter fit my new Euro 5 Himalayan ok? It looks like its the same shape but I've got two air pipes going across the front of the cover with clips holding them in place. And you recommend fitting the filter and cover in conjunction with a booster plug, but in the video you say that you can't fit a booster plug on a Euro 5. Is it worth doing the filter if i can't use a booster plug as well?
The valve adjustments sound very interesting, being in the UK id like to take advantage of those adjustments, reduction in ticking noise would be nice and any other performance or fuel improvements is a bonus. Will there be a video on that subject and guidance on doing it?
I'd say that there are likely a multitude of videos on tappet clearance adjustment on UA-cam particularly for this easy to adjust style of tappets (as opposed to shims). What he was saying was essentially make them a 1000th of an inch less than the spec to make the intake and the exhaust valve clearance tighter. If you don't do maintenance yourself, you could probably ask your mechanic to do it for you (they may baulk at the idea but you're the one paying the money). It does take a 'special tool' to do the job yourself (to hold the screw in the correct adjustment whilst turning the locking nut to hold it there). These can be purchased from eBay - or others (on the RE Owners forum) have made their own. I like the sound of that as well - when I first heard the Himalyan tappet clearance just done (by ?The Wiltshire Man) on YT, I thought that he'd made a mistake. Most will argue that louder tappets are potentially less harmful than tight tappets, but I'm with you - I'd rather it was a little quieter! Cheers.
wondering if you have any advice/contacts to get my seat sorted? With my dimensions its agony within 20 miles or so at the base of my spine and butt. My legs are too long compared to upper body, if the seat would be pretty much level I think I'd be fine. Otherwise I love the bike.
Hi you need to modify it like mine, it makes a huge difference. most good seat companies should be able to do it for you. I used Saddle craft at South Sheilds and they did a really great job.
@@georgemilburn6213 your so right George! Just bought a new seat from Hitchcock's the Tall version as they call it, only raises by 2 cm I reckon. Already an improvement, but no where near enough. Have found a guy who can do it and he is only 50 miles from me, his work looks awesome, very reasonable price, so will very likely do it, get the original modified. I can always leave the Hitchocks seat on when I trade in on a new 650 Sherpa (Enfield you have to do it!!!!), hopefully the seat will just swap in. That's the plan...
Hi So im travelling on my himalayan a lot of it offroad(TET) with quite a bit of luggage now after allmost 30k i want to do a few changes (only have a Freeflow Airfilter so far) The Intake Camshaft Fuel X Lite Maybe Suspension And a exhaust exhaust The exhaust for me is the biggest strugle 10000 people recommending echaust without knowing if they actually improve the power... Seeing your videos gives me a Feeling that you probably care for the numbers... Can you recommend one?
Yes fine on Euro 5 to fit cam and silencer, but I would not reccomend fitting the high flow intake plate as it may make it run too lean with those parts
very interesting :) but a question : could you tell us with what kind of foam and how to install it ? i dont see how you attached it behind the air flow....
Hi George, greetings from Thailand, I own a Meteor Stellar Black (also a GT535 and a Honda CB300R), out here, it's classed as a big bike, I was going to buy an Interceptor, but like you say, I've reached an age where I no longer want a big heavy bike (although the Meteor isn't light), the bike does seem to be restricted in top gear (although it's very rare I exceed 90km/hr), I hope you will be able to make a rear carrier for fitting a top box, I carry a pillion on a regular basis and have fitted a pair of Givi panniers for luggage space, but I do like to have a top box as well, anyway, here's hoping, keep up the good work, take care
They definitely sound a bit tappety, makes perfect sense that the clearances would be a little high for UK temperatures when they're produced somewhere that sees temperatures in the 40s
George, some time ago you mentioned that you were working on a carb upgrade for the Himalayan. Have you made any progress with this? One thing I would be very interested to see are the emissions figures on a standard EFI system, and a good Japanese carb conversion. I don’t own a Himalayan, though I’m considering getting one to play with. I am in the process of planning to convert a BMW F650 Dakar engine to a single Mikuni carb, and fit it in a modified CCM 604 frame. You guys are doing great work. Thank you for sharing
Hi and thanks for interesting video. Would there be an improvement to cold airflow (on Meteor) if just the DNA air intake plate (flange/snorkol thing) was used?
Hi, I have just bought a royal Enfield scram and been told that if I don't take it back to the shop where I bought it from for the first service the warranty will be void by the way I am a retired motorcycle mechanic and MOT TESTER which they charge £140 ISH and I can buy oil and filter for £38 it's like you taking a bike elsewhere to get the service done which isn't going to happen and the place I bought it from uses 10-40 fully synthetic oil which the scram411 uses 15-50 semi.
The KTM 390 is made in India and I see some people in India changing to a different radiator. I had an English sports car that let rain in, but it only bothered me when I lived near a rain forest. My Oilhead had a snorkel that reached along the side above the cylinder. You'd have to relocate the oil cooler on the Himalayan to the IP frame.
Hi nice up-date , wondering if you will put a vid out showing/detailing all of the mods you have done on the white Himalayan and any benefits you have achieved as a whole up to this date . Also you mentioned you tested a euro 5 bS 6 in the states ,was this a Californian only US version , I ask because all the US reviews of the 2021 Himalayan I have seen have all been BS4 euro 4 versions - easily distinguished by the earlier larger frame at front of the fuel tank and smaller rear carrier - ?
BTW - my 2021 Euro 4 Himalayan has the ambient air temp sensor inside the rear mudguard assembly, so they finally moved it, just to place that still gets hot on sunny days
really needs to be in front of the motor to be accurate , we tried under the seat positions and still too hot. I don't understand why RE will not cure these well documented issues when the update models ?
Like what see with all your mods. How does the camshaft upgrade affect highway performance? I want to get a Himalayan but its apparent lack of highway performance is what's holding me back.
Hey George, do you this it is still worth doing the air filter mods even without the foam sheet near the engine? Also, do you have a template for the proposed cutouts to the side panel? Cheers
H i George. please make a one piece gear lever for the Meteor, cant get my foot under the heel and toe setup and just dont like it, oh and also a nice can and a tail tidy ! any thing you do make will be great thanks in anticipation Pete Barnes.
If you enitiate a Kick start in GT/Interceptor-650 it will be welcome by lot of customer because for charging the battery usually the ride is not sufficient and battery deteriorate gradually.
Cool bike....I would like to build a hooligan version of this bike.....possibly INT 650 front fork with 17 inch wheels.....strip it down and get it as light as possible...
@@georgemilburn6213 - Just under the headlamp would give excellent cooling for the oil, and leave more cool air for the engine intake. But I'd worry about the constant flexing of the oil lines from the fork turning left and right.
No simply moving the stock sensor to the front of the bike will cure it, you simply need to extend the wiring with a bit of 2 core. When using a boosterplug you also need to mount the boosterplug temp sensor near to the headstock too as it will work a lot better.
Hi George, Dave in France here. So I've bought a 2022 Himi, brand new. It appears that it might have an AI system and I wondered if you've ever thought about removing it in an attempt to reduce heat and popping on over-run ?
Great update & 1 quick question…I know that the Cannon exhausts for the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 only work with the baffles in on the Euro 5 models. How confident are you that you will be able to design the Cannon exhausts to work with the baffles out in the future on a scale of 1 to 10? Or would it be better to purchase a pre-owned Euro 4? Cheers.
I was interested in your experiments with the sensor on the Himalaya, when we had the hot spell my Interceptor wasn’t happy and felt less brisk. So I’v removed the sensor and cable tied it to the grab handle, also I’v used some foam rubber to seal between the airbox and frame to stop the hot air blowing past into the airbox. I have to say its a success, it pulls better at low speed and also seems to pick up quicker ! the only initial downside was that the idle speed went up a bit but has since returned to normal. All I have to do now is make a nice bracket to hold the sensor, are they waterproof ?
Simple question: what temperature should I stop the Hima inmediately? un Spain nota difficult to ser 53 degrees in out of the box gauge? thanks a lot in advance
Hi we just go up 1 tooth on the front sprocket to 16 T, we normally have these in stock but the cam kits have caused a rush on these too, we should have more in about 2 weeks. the standard chain will need an extra link when going up a tooth.
Hi there, thanks for all the vids. I've got a carby Himy 2017 NZ. How do these various modifications effect a carby version? I don't know what I'm talking about but would the carb need adjusting after changing the cam, air filter, exhaust? It seems there's a "little black box" on the injected bikes which sorts out fueling issues for you after a few minutes of running. I'm no engineer but i am curious, cheers.
Just fitted the DNA intake/filter kit, WOW. You can feel it pulling harder straight away. Worth every penny (and I am yorkshire;)

So im travelling on my himalayan a lot of it offroad(TET) with quite a bit of luggage now after allmost 30k i want to do a few changes (only have a Freeflow Airfilter so far)
The Intake
Camshaft
Fuel X Lite
Maybe Suspension
And a exhaust exhaust
The exhaust for me is the biggest strugle
10000 people recommending echaust without knowing if they actually improve the power...
Seeing your videos gives me a Feeling that you probably care for the numbers...
Can you recommend one?
Can I fit cam air cleaner and full exhaust to euro5 Himalayan safely
Yes fine on Euro 5 to fit cam and silencer, but I would not reccomend fitting the high flow intake plate as it may make it run too lean with those parts
I do 70 to 80 mph 5 days a week no problem but with little mods, very reliable and tractor like sound
very interesting :) but a question : could you tell us with what kind of foam and how to install it ? i dont see how you attached it behind the air flow....
fixed with double sided foam tape that you use to fix trim parts etc.
Hi that meteor dna stage 2 air filter cover is it suitable for Himalayan
Have you tried either a larger oil cooler or two coolers..
What about a big bore kit for these..?
They definitely sound a bit tappety, makes perfect sense that the clearances would be a little high for UK temperatures when they're produced somewhere that sees temperatures in the 40s
sorry about the delay getting this video posted as we had upload issues last week.
I would be interested too.
For the lower air inlet holes on the side panel, how do you think a side panel, made with louvres to direct the air in would improve things?
We tried that and made no difference as the riders leg position stops direct flow. works best with just holes at rear of the panel .
Hi I heard that the 650 cruiser is called the shotgun.
Nice name for a bike that's "made like a gun"!
Yes, I heard that as well, apparently RE have registered the name…
Nice update. Did you modify the bar end mirror caps to accept the factory M8 bolt or remove the part threaded that's welded into the bars?
Hi
They are our bar end caps in our mirror kits reversed and drilled out to take the stock m8 bolts
@@georgemilburn6213 any plans to offer these as a finished mirror option?
So simply cutting off the snorkel on the air box cover help?
Is the camshaft available in the U.S. yet?
Do you need to remap the bike after changing the filter ?
Hi great video. What is the sheet you use to divert the hot air away from the air intake? Thanks
1mm thick neophrene sheet
How do I order from you from the US?
Hi mate, have you looked into creating a kit to run an external cone/ pod filter set up, similar to what HD bikes have?
SCIENCE!
@@georgemilburn6213 mine is up the front with the booster plug sensor. I couldn't believe it when I finally traced where they'd put it
Like what see with all your mods. How does the camshaft upgrade affect highway performance? I want to get a Himalayan but its apparent lack of highway performance is what's holding me back.
Hello from Florida! I Hope the Meteor 650 makes to the states- Should be a fine bike.
Have you tried reorienting the *oil cooler* to be high and horizontal - as on the 650cc bikes -
to allow more cool air to flow to the intake?
I think it would be better under the headlamp but not tried it yet
@@georgemilburn6213 - Just under the headlamp would give excellent cooling for the oil, and leave more cool air for the engine intake. But I'd worry about the constant flexing of the oil lines from the fork turning left and right.
Does installing your fuel booster plug on the Euro4 Himalayan solve the temperature sensor issue you describe in this video? Thanks
No
simply moving the stock sensor to the front of the bike will cure it, you simply need to extend the wiring with a bit of 2 core.
Cheers.
The more we look at Euro 5 we find that we have no way of increasing fuel. The only answer would be an ECU remap. but this would affect warranty.
How does restricting the hot air flow towards the airbox effect the cylinder and head temperature?
The heat across the motor is unaffected, we just stop the heat going back into the motor via the airbox
Did you buy that seat or get it re done? I'm 6ft and find it cramped. That looks super comfy

Hi, what you did to gear revs?
16 Tooth sprocket on the gearbox side. See their website (out of stock at the moment though)
You mentioned that you've geared up the Himalayan, is that a sprocket kit you sell? Or what tooth combination have you found that works best?
Hi
we just go up 1 tooth on the front sprocket to 16 T, we normally have these in stock but the cam kits have caused a rush on these too, we should have more in about 2 weeks. the standard chain will need an extra link when going up a tooth.
What is the crack with the triumph trident 660?
I will do an update video soon, we are developing and testing parts on it now. But just very busy at this time of year.
Hi most of the work we have done is on the EFI versions, but carb may just need a small jet change to get air/fuel ratio perfect
@@georgemilburn6213 Hi there George, thanks for the reply and info, I'd been wondering about this for a while. Cheers.
It's Himalayan! 😬
How is the Euro 5 Himalayan on/off-throttle? Is it jerky without a Booster Plug?
I'd be interested in this too having had booster plugs on previous bikes.
Where can l purchase the short dark screen ?
we should have them on the webshop very soon
@@georgemilburn6213 Hi George, this looks way better than the Hitch one. What will the cost be?
