  • I’m on an uninhabited island in Panama with Naomi, who was on the Alone UK TV series. We’re taking 15 clients on the survival adventure of a lifetime before heading off ourselves on a survival challenge with no food, water or matches. You’ll also get my tips on how to survive on a tropical island with extreme heat, sandflies and crocodiles.
    If you're interested in doing an adventure like this yourself visit;

    I want to thank the amazing survival crew we taught out there. You guys gave it 100% and did a fantastic job. Thank you for allowing me to use your personal photos and videos in this video too.

      You welcome @OutbackMike. Your channel is very good & informative, and you seem like a nice, down to earth guy. If you ever come to Mexico, drop me a line and I be glad to help. I am a wildlife vet & a research animal ecologist (with a PhD from Durham University, UK) and also an avid amateur bush crafter, bow hunter and adventurer. Not much of a survivalist, I am afraid, but I know a thing or two. I used to have a very good Australian friend (also wildlife vet and professor Dr. Anthony English) that sadly passed away from Parkinson disease a few years ago (RIP dear Tony). With him, a learned to appreciate the Outback way & style, mate! Love the accent & the way of life. Cheerios!

    Having been born and raised in the forest in Cambodia, starting a fire was the first thing I was taught by my parents and my grandparents. You can use a small hollow bamboo to blow the area where the potential fire to start that way you’re not inhaling the smoke and keep your face away from the flames as well. I’ve also served in the US Army for 12 years and I was an instructor for survival school in the Army.

      Thanks heaps Jonathon. I’ll still be preoccupied with my feature film (based on my dugout canoe expedition) during this year but I’m going to go full time UA-cam as soon as that wraps up. I hope to the at least some of the UA-cam series on the dugout canoe expedition out this year too. I’m guessing they’ll be around 15 eps at least on it.

    The rubbish is such a huge problem in South America. I visited the coastline of Lima in the early 90s & the rubbish from 10,000,000 people was being bulldozed off cliffs into the ocean for miles. Everything you could ever imagine was floating out to sea from truck tires to thongs were floating away to end up on islands around the world.

    Great to see what you were talking about on the podcast. Is the leatherman wave the single most important piece of survival kit? Watching a series of alone currently and everyone seems to have taken one. Or is it simply the multi tool in one factor? If you could have only one thing when your abandoned on a desert island, what would it be? A fero rod?

    • @OutbackMike
      @OutbackMike  7 місяців тому +3

      It would either be a machete or a multi-tool. I’d have to think harder to decide between the two. The exact multitool type is personal preference depending on your skill set. I’m using a leatherman P4 Free atm. The nee Arc looks like it improves on the P4 and I’m keen to try one.

    OMG 12.41 !!! I most definitely would take a good look around too. That is a landscape mate! 😲😄. But seriously, sandflies in Latin-American can transmit nasty diseases such as Leishmaniasis and others. Crocodilus acutus is not as bad as C. porosus, but definitely cause some deaths here and there. A tourist was killed by one in the beaches of Guerrero, Mexico just recently. And in such a polluted beach I would be extremely careful (being barefooted) with human rubbish such as needles, glass, sharp iron and dog shit (because it can transmit a nasty parasite (Ancylostoma) through the skin). All of it is a common cause of visiting the ER here (and there, I suppose). Interesting stuff.

    Hey Mike, I was always taught that with crocs the surface is the kill zone. If you see one, you're never going to outswim them, but your best chance of survival is to dive under and slowly creep to the edge of a pool or billabong and hope like crazy, it hasn't been alerted.
    Once you're away from the kill zone (surface) they allegedly don't know how to deal with the situation. A test was done with Nile crocs. And worked ok. Your thoughts mate. Obviously if in doubt, stay out. Cheers for a great episode. Atb from across the ditch.

    • @OutbackMike
      @OutbackMike  7 місяців тому

      I’ve heard that but I don’t think it works with Australian saltwater crocs. I know a guy who was taken 5m down on scuba. They’re well adapted predators so it’s hard to imagine it working. Still, it might be worth a try if you have no other option.
