- Thirteen-year-old Kayla (Elsie Fisher) endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school-the end of her thus far disastrous eighth-grade year-before she begins high school. Fisher, Josh Hamilton, Emily Robinson, Jake Ryan, Imani Lewis & writer/director Bo Burnham stopped by to discuss the film, "Eighth Grade."

It is so refreshing to hear a writer/director ACTUALLY understand the nuances of children & teenagers. We obviously need more young film makers
Bo: don’t expect art
Also Bo: INSIDE
and my dumb ass sitting here trying to figure out piano like, bruh...
are you still playing piano? it's a challenge to learn for sure, but totally worth it
omg this interviewer is asking the BEST QUESTIONS
yess, he's getting the actors/actresses to spill all the tea
yess he's getting the actors/actresses to spill all the tea
Dodie ilysm
hello dodie nice to see you here
we love to see dodie watching the same videos as me
I don't think the interviewer gets enough credit for how put together and well-spoken he can be and he asks pretty solid questions as well
Bo being a ranting artist is my absolute favorite.
Bo going on rants is my favourite. And it’s so nice to have an interview where the interviewer doesn’t interrupt Bo when he is ranting
I feel like Bo sees so much of himself in Jake, The way his face lights up when he speaks to try and support him and make him feel comfortable
mmmm Bo Burnham Having an Existential Crisis on Camera my favorite youtube genre
boy do i have the netflix special for you
@@humphreyward5637 lmfaoooo, I literally just finished rewatching it for the third time
@@weirddood9917 time stamp :)
@Eliza V, little did u know what was in store with Inside *wink*
I’m honestly so proud of Bo, getting to see him grow as an artist and as a person has been such an honor. Glad to have him as my birthday buddy.
Happy Birthday. 3 days late but Happy Birthday
I could listen to Bo ramble for hours.
46:45 Bo saying not to expect works of art from him ..... Dude, "Inside" IS a work of art and art is NOT dead. Bravo
so people think you're funny, how do we get those people's money?
For the "welcome freshman" dance at my school, it was superhero themed and I thought I'd be silly and wear underwear over my pants with a red towel cape like Captain Underpants. I received the nickname Captain Virginity that stuck throughout all of high school.
Andrew Olsen that’s rough.
Awww 🙁
My god I'm so sorry
That opening was the worst.
Yeah, I didn’t even make it past the 2 minute mark. As soon as the host said “ooh I’ve got child-bearing hips” I was out
That's the perfect time to bow out lol. I was just amazed that it ran for 10-11 minutes, and they felt so strongly about it they decided to leave it conjoined to the actual interview/Q&A.
I eventually came back and skipped ahead to the interview. The portion with Bo, Elsie, Josh and the rest of the cast was interesting to listen to.
Yeah that was cringe compilation worthy.
I think the opposite. haha Was funny.
I just love how none of the cast members look like they are going to the same place.
Elsie - day in the mall with a large group of friends
Emily - a second date
Imani - going at starbucks with the bestie
Josh - parent/teacher conference (could be either)
Jake - actually going on an interview
Bo - ... i got no words
Elsie at 18:29 when she realized Bo is gonna use the #chalupa dab in yet another interview XD
Bo should read Erving Goffman's "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life". It's a sociological classic, but written in an essayist style, so it's very digestable for someone who doesn't study sociology (not that Bo wouldn't get behind it anyway). It uses the metaphor of the theatre and performance to describe social interactions. The entire premise is essentially that we're never truly alone and we can't not perform, not even in the bathtub, not even when we masturbate. And how our worst fear is social death, or as he puts it: losing our face.
Yes, I was thinking about Erving Goffman so often during the movie. Even if I am more of a Luhmannist, the idea of "we are all playing theatre" in life fits quite well if you break it down to the individual. It is great, that somebody else noticed the connection to Goffmans work as well :)
I can't believe he spoiled that there'll be chicken nuggets in this movie!
I happy cried at that part, so yeah, it is a spoiler.
“Awkward is beautiful” put that on a tshirt. Please. I’m begging you.
I love this film so much because I can relate to it as someone who is anxious a lot (even though I'm in high school). And this interview seems so genuine and "awkward" in a beautiful way (like Bo said). There's something about this movie and how it was made that feels so real. Even the way the actors acted in the interview is so similar to how they act in the film. I love how Jake and Elsie we're talking about the nugget scene, and it seemed to have a very similar vibe to the actual scene. The whole idea and concept of it is pure genius. I love it.
yes for sure it really is just a bunch of awkward people getting together and bonding over their shared awkward experiences, then making it accessible to a wider audience - us, who can relate and have our experiences validated. i love how elsie fisher says 'i don't really get invited to many pool parties' and then does a thumbs up oh gosh she's so genuine and cute
I don’t mind the first 11mins of this video in theory... I do kinda mind that it was apart of this video. It should be more like a video released earlier in the day as a separate video or something. I find it hard to believe the people who specifically come for a in depth interview with filmmakers/artists will be the same people that want a wacky zany sketch before said interview.
Again, I don’t have a problem with it, it was cute and funny, but it really should be a completely different video.
Darrel seems very coincidental and unfortunate that this is the one video they decided not to do that with.
@@UC0TA7M2P36AYAl such a nice user you are too
are these opening hosts awkward on purpose, or are they just really trying to be cool, and failing miserably? that opening was really something
Josh Hamilton is such an underrated and fantastic actor.
you can really tell that bo really likes Jake as a person. I hope Jake see's that.
Totally reads his nervousness and looks after him on a totally non controlling, awesome way and was so great to see
Bo's really one brilliant, determined & humorous dude! He honestly did a terrific job with the film & Elsie was outstanding in it!
Jake is a fucking national treasure he’s adorable
I think I cringed harder at the intro than I did the movie. Oh my god.
It's Bo, yo.
and he's the greatest rapper eva
And he'll weather your weather whether you think he's clever or not.
Think you’re better? You’re not
Doesn't need a sweater, he's hot
@@yesterdayssjamm he's a real g-shawty who can really find your g spot
So I spent 11 minutes wondering when is this video gonna start
Actual video starts at 10:50
Josh Hamilton, such an underrated gem of an actor.
Yes! Thank you! I was waiting for an interviewer to talk about the audio track!
In year 9 (8th grade) I spilled my coffee all over my desk when I wasn’t meant to be bringing coffee into school and I tried to mop it up with my blazer 💀
I think this is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched just on a general note. Not having to do with any topic, this is probably the best video in general I have ever watched!
I wish I had advice and a story like this when I was going into eighth grade. It was a really difficult year for me in terms of anxiety and self image. I'm glad that kids can hear this now and realize that we're all awkward losers and that we aren't alone in our struggle. I can't wait to see this movie.
What bo says really speaks to me, I cannot wait to see the movie.
When I watched the movie, I never felt like any film was so relatable! It was so amazing! I wanted to cry about the car scene, but it was unbelievable, and I totally recommend watching it, if you haven’t already. It made me feel like I mattered, and I’m not insecure anymore. YOU SHOULD SO WATCH IT!!! THE ACTING IS PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!
Bo’s in the house
Watched the trailer like 500 times, really want to see this movie soon
This was such a great cast to be a part of ! They are the nicest people ever
I am so glad to see bo again! And this project is amazing direction for him i am so happy !he is so talented
I love Bo's rants.
@33:40; wow that is a cool insight, that felt like the movie's premise
YES, the music in the movie clip
i hate that the opening was part of this but i love ricky he’s the only interviewer i like in this series
"what if Trent Reznor was a thirteen year old girl." man, this is the guy you want to describe the film score to the composer.
I was only planning to watch the first ten minutes of this interview but I might as well finish it cause I’m already 40 minutes in, oops. Every single question and answer is so fun to listen to and understand
bo burnham is a genius
Please release this internationally or online ASAP! Desperate to see it
tdreamgmail yeah! Agree!!
I'll send it to you, I can just download it. Post your email
Twisted Mind Productions wait, really? QWQ

i'm jake in this interview
Elle Buch Right?
(skip ahead 80 times) They're still confessing??
Next movie idea "Welcome to the human experience" high school edition
The interview finally starts at 13:36 lmao
Is this guy a writer or a life coach? Either way i like listening to him.
That intro... wow...
It’s awesome how they story “I’m sorry” directly from Fallon
I relate to this movie mainly cause i am so nervous and such an emotional wreck
I bet Bo's ankles are always cold.
edit: Also, ZACH STONE IS GONNA BE FAMOUS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER.
hi i need 10 more hours of this thanks
25:23 he had no clue how accurate that would be in coming times
The interviewer did an incredible job! Now I'm gonna watch the beginning of the video which i skipped because everyone kept criticizing it in the comments
skip to like 10:46 if you want to avoid the unrelated 10 minutes where two hosts do nothing interesting on camera
Completely agee with everything said, love Bo Burnham, and I can't wait to try to see this film
Jake Ryan is just the best
These companies need to start getting some interviewers that are actually like not annoying lol
11:00
Did we really need 11 minutes of that?? Get on with it next time ohmygod
Even though it’s rated R I am DETERMINED to try to watch this film
13:31 is that the guy from the white lotus season 1?
Bo Burnham is a whole genius like,,, defining a generation type savant and we been knew but holy shit
At 44:03 kid picks his nose lol
"That takes some guts"
Ok i like this guy
starts at 13:35
I can’t decide if I hate this movie or love it or something in between.
If you want to avoid the terrible intro skip to 10:29
jake is the cutest kid ever😭😭😭
Why does every comment saying “I’m bo yo” get like 2k likes
when that one teacher dabbed in the movie i lost my shit
If you enjoy Bo Burnham's work, you might like this edit I made using clips from his show "Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous" set to his song "Goodbye" (from the "Inside" special):

11:00 you're welcome
away from the awkward first 1 mins that everyone's upset with, can someone tell me what shoes is jake wearing??? they look nice. I know bo is wearing vans but what is jake wearing
Hajer Elbusefi bro I’m trying to find what watch bo is wearing
shut up! his name is actually jake ryan??
Go to 13:40 for the interview everything before that is just stupid.
i love jake wtf
13:40
at the start I thought they were doing a pastiche of the kind of awkwardly 'uncool' adults as portrayed in the movie.
they weren't
lmao same.
COUCH CONFESSION IS SO AWKWARD EVERYONE HAD LIKE A STRAIGHT FACE.
10:40 skip the nonsense at the start.
86 the pre-show shit or whatever that opening was
i really liked emily robinson's advice about going into eighth grade. interestingly, imani lewis' advice was pretty much the opposite - 'just embrace it (depression/anxiety) cause it's not gonna stop anytime soon' - like, wow that's dark and treatment is definitely possible so that's not a great message to be sending haha
I think you can kind of do both. It’s unrealistic to expect it to ever fully disappear, so it’s worth getting acquainted with how it affects you, but also treatment can help lessen the intensity of it and help you learn to function with it
We’ve just been demonetised
Can you just not do the opening and get to Bo and Elsie ya know the people that matter.
You know that feeling immediately after walking through a cobweb? that feels much more calming than watching this opening.
6/10 the food was good but served by an androgynous Tourette sufferer, with yellowed fingernails and a cold
How About Just, I Remember.
That whole "Couch Confessions" skit was AWFUL.
I don’t remember the girl in yellow in the film? Was she one of Olivia’s friends at the mall? Edit: yeah, she was
That interviewer seemed super... uncomfortable, I guess the word is lol
lol I feel like he had no sense of humor.. or Bo's humor
Exactly lol had no sense of irony
He’s a decent interviewer and I’m pretty sure he understands where Bo is coming from. It’s really not hard to pick up
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Did they really just sit on audience members for 10 minutes to do that awful sketch
"I got childbearing hips" .... and I'm out. Goodnight and goodbye. Gonna find another interview.
