  • Comedian Bo Burnham discussed the critically acclaimed film he wrote and directed, "Eighth Grade." His conversation with The Atlantic’s Matt Thompson explored the process of creating a story around adolescence in a social-media-saturated world, how tech impacts the shifting experience of being a teenager - or fails to - and what he learned making the movie.

The host calling Bo's comedy carrear "light stuff" at the start seems to me like he didn't do his research.

Light stuff as in the songs kill yourself, from god's perspective and that 2 sides of the brain thing? talking about mental health issues, suicide and love. Just fun light stuff all the way.

to be fair, I think the interviewer was super nervous, hes got nervous energy for sure. And, I kinda think he meant to say ".. and you do comedy, like, stuff"

Bo really became an interview pro on this circuit of interviews. He turns truly horrible, basic questions into introspective and expansive answers.

bo: “hi everyone! how are you doing? how’s your day going?”
interviewer: “they can’t answer, they don’t have mics”
    bo: “mouths.”
    i love that man.

    what
    a strange

    to have to make
    at the end
    of the night
    between all
    the information
    in the history
    of the world
    and

    infinity

It's true but the opposite can also be the same the oblivion is this material world and our codependency tours our phones and infinite is that silence and infinite knowledge of quieting the mind

I can't believe I haven't seen this until now. It's wonderful to hear someone talking about kids like they're valid, and explaining their thought process. The whole 'no bullying, but being ignored' is very real and reminded me of school and the dynamic with teens nowadays.
    Bo is a legend.

It's absolutely hilarious that what you both take away from this is that you need more content and commentary from this man...
His whole point is that you shouldn't be yearning for another fix, you should move away from the phones and the content not keep trying to scratch that itch.
If Bo Burnham becomes just another content factory to please the masses he will be a part of the problem he's trying to fight against.

The one part of Bo’s replies that this host related to was “#chalupa” because that’s how he knows the internet. It feels like he completely missed the point of the film based on these questions and his presentation.

As you so rightly put it, that's how he know the internet. It's so interesting to me how these various incompatible narratives, of what the internet is and is for, just seem to exist out there.
But yeah that wasn't the point haha he missed the joke and that's pretty sad

  • @gizemaslan4431

The sad thing about social media is that all our social life attached to social media, so it is an obligation to have a social life, to make friends, to get job etc etc. You can't seperate the digital world and real world, they melted down together in a box, when ı have quited on social media about 2-3 months I started to loose touch with my friends or couldn't get involved their conversation or their jokes bec I have no idea what they're talking about. bec half of the interaction/conversation was going on social media account and ı wasnt there, ı started to be isolated person. I think that bitter fact was really expressed in that movie from the perspective a child who born into this half digital/half real world.

I feel this so much. I don't have facebook, and haven't had one for over 6 years and because of that I absolutely got left behind on my friend group. Which is fine, but I wish we wouldn't use social media as such a crutch to maintain relationships. As a 29 year old I feel like I'm one of the many few who aren't acclimated to the narcissistic side of social media like most of my peers are and it actually puts me at a weird disadvantage.

it pains me because Bo is also clearly uncomfortable with the host. If the host actually learned about Bo prior i'd hope that he would be aware of Bo's anxiety and would try to make this a welcoming opportunity for him and he did the complete opposite. I find it almost unsettling that Bo's point of the algorithm burying nobodies isn't even really that true anymore. During the pandemic we had people like Julie Nolke and Joel Haver pop up out of relative obscurity. Too many people like Bo were scrolling through the trending section and not clicking anything bc they are bored of Fallon or Colbert. That's what makes the internet so dangerous, it's constantly changing into a version of itself that makes you want to come back (or never leave).

"As someone who achieved that currency that the kids are striving for, what would you tell Kayla?"
"I worry about young people being creative. The great thing about working creatively is accessible to everyone right away. The thing I actually loved about it was the thing I was doing when I was in theater in eighth grade. I get a lot of kids coming up to me saying 'I'm an aspiring writer, I'm an aspiring actor.' Well, ARE you a writer? Do you write? Do you act? You're a writer. You're an actor! You actually have the permission to enjoy the thing right away. and if it's not what you enjoy & you enjoy the views and the attention - RUN. Go. Get away from it. You're putting your happiness in the hands of something you have no control over."
You know who I feel bad for? Nikocado Avocado. That's one of the people who lost their lives that way.

God - Ellie is acting her heart out in this movie. As a +50-year-old dude, I can not over-emphasise anything by now since I am old watching the internet as one of the first who git access to the thing.
Oh hey, American TV hosts - stop trying to impress ANYONE with your inner acting skills on TV. That dude acts so well himself that I FELT his breakdown in his Robert Lepage level of understanding and attention to detail and humanism recently.
I am saying this kindly as a scientist "broadly" studying climate change, specifically bothering my brain with the combination of fluid and thermodynamics (yeah - that pain does not go away). Some shit is way above my paygrade and one should not pretend to be auditioning for it on linear TV that one is hosting.
Just be ok. I, as a physicist, do not even know what time really is or if it even exists. But I know it is not "pretending to be performing some zeitgeist on the internet right now". I really struggle with reality. It is why I am paid long before they ask me what it means to be a human. I go to the arts to help me with my humanity since I can obviously not calculate the solution to that question.
