Nathaniel! This is surely the most imaginative and best crafted tribute to Joni Mitchell I've ever seen. The text in the postcard quoting Blue Motel Room, the six 747s doing the hexagram of the heavens, the photo of Amelia Earhart traveling with Joni... so many details, such great quality illustrations... As a Joni fan for almost five decades, I thank you for this wonderful gift. WallyK

This is really beautiful. Love Joni & this song. I think my favorite part is the "Icarus ascending" and falling into his arms. Where her sunglasses slip and you see her eyes.

Joni's 'Shadows and Light' performance of 'Amelia' was pretty much my introduction to her (and what an introduction!!) the imagery of Amelia Earhart throughout the song also started a fascination. 'Hejira' has always been my favorite album and when joining JMDL I found it was pretty much every Joni fan's favorite along with 'Amelia' being the favorite song among all of us. Just LAST night was I introduced to the two AMAZING videos you made for the songs off that album. I was SO mesmerized- just like many others. It used to be so easy to send folks a message on UA-cam but Google+ changed all that and dinosaur that I am haven't figured out how to send just a simple message on Google+. Anyway- I did find your site where you explained your thought process and such and thanks for sharing that along with your work itself. Just-- Thank You.

I've loved Joni's music since I was 9 years old, so that's 54 years for me! I still love Joni! Her music is absolutely timeless!

My first Joni album was "Ladies of the canyon"in 1970. So its 53 years ago for me. Still my biggest comfort and music experience. Love ❤

@Nathaniel Barlam: For someone who is in their 20s and wasn't even born when Joni blessed the world with Hejira, you have done an amazing job of capturing the feeling of her greatest (IMO) songs.. You're more than talented; you're inspired. I wish Joni could see your artwork.. in a way it reminds me of her paintings. I hope you will consider illustrating "Refuge Of The Roads"!!
Thank you so much! I think what's so great about her music is that it transcends age. I always bear in mind that she was only around 30 when she composed Hejira (my personal favorite album), yet it seems like she'd already lived through a hundred lifetimes by then.

good stuff as ever, been away need to check up on genesis animations you've finished and found this, 10 out of 10 three ticks and a gold star for sure, i love the hand drawn sketch style myself and so your animations are how i would (will) work, i need the time now, i have photoshop and premier a digitizer playing up and wicked scanner printer, got an hp-envy120 brand new for £10 in charity shop, (cash is a real hassle so loved my find one cool printer wifi linked etc..) i am scanning almost fast as i can sketch, i now need to get a project, hmm barclay james harvest.. suicide make a good project.. keep on animating nathan...

Well Nathaniel, since winter is again approaching, is it time for your illustrations on "Fury Sings the Blues?" :-) Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
Well, I'd say you're half right! As winter is coming, I have indeed been working on a new illustration!!! However, I'm taking a break from Joni's music to try something a bit different, so it's a song by another band (another personal favorite, though for now it's a surprise).
For the new work I'm trying my hand at digital drawing, as I've never been happy with how my hand-drawn comics scan, so I think the final result should look very nice on UA-cam when it's finished. My goal is to upload it by the end of the year, but the song I've chosen is very long (around 23 minutes!) and very trippy, so I don't want to rush it.
I appreciate the wishful thinking though! It made my day :)
Well, although the Joni-lover in me is a bit disappointed, I'm excited to see what you come up with! Good luck with digital drawing. I can't wait to see it.
