THIS is why I've loved her for nearly all of my life. She is the poet laureate of our generation, singing the things we were thinking along the way, giving words to what we felt ... Happy Birthday, Miss Joni!
Oh, what a treat. Different from the album. Solo. You don't hear all the piano work in the orchestrated version. She's remarkably consistent, professional, but you can still hear variations of expression, showing how she feels about certain phrases. She's singing softer here, not afraid she won't be heard over all those instruments in the album. Hear this then the album version.
This is probably my most favorite album of Joni's. An intensly deep, wonderful talent, it will be along time before anyone can match her lyrical creativity.
What I love about this is how unique, expressive, fluid and entwined the melody and chords are. They lead each other on, and it feels like there's no way to distinguish which could have come first. It doesn't sound like a poem set to music or a piece of music that had a melody added; it's all just there, complete. The absolute height of songwriting.
One of my favorite songs from that record. Incredible audio portrait, vivid lyrics. Also love the pic of Vivien Leigh-one of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood(ok there was Elizabeth Taylor)
'Hissing' was seen as too diffirent from the intensely personal self-analysis she was famous for. But it's genius in its own way...with wonderful mini-movie narratives like this and "Edith', not to mention the gloriously apocalyptic 'Shadows & Light'
"Literally a time gone by as in the movie in Technicolor, Gone" With The Wind". Still. nothing compares in celluloid cinematic color.Joni is brilliant.
Its my first listen to this version but I must confess to liking the piano part better on the album version. For all that Joni is my absolute favourite singer songwriter artist of all time.
I agree that this is actually better than the cut on Hissing of Summer Lawns. I like the chord changes better. The whole thing reminds me much more of her than the track I was thinking of when I searched for it here a few minutes ago. Messages that don’t come from your inbox.
This demo is from "The Seeding of Summer Lawns," which is a compilation of the demos from 1974-1977, most of which are from "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns." It's available on the internet and through Amazon and the like. I highly recommend it.
In the otherwise very well-made documentary Woman of Heart and Mind (currently showing on Netflix), the filmmakers inexplicably (and inexcusably) COMPLETELY OMIT any mention, song, or image relating to this album. I was utterly dumbfounded.
Surprised this exact version isn’t included in the Rhino demo collection - they opted for a different piano and vocal demo take that has some different articulation. I like this one more.
How can she even THINK of those chords. Joni will remain unsurpassed for eternity.
Not a IV V I or ii V7 I in the bunch. Yeah so much more advanced than a folk singer guitar strummer has any right to be🤷♂️ she's always been.
I think she calls them "chords of inquiry".

This is breathtaking, it really brings out the darker tones of the lyrical meaning. Joni is a genius, pure and simple.
I love the different piano parts, between the more familiar parts. It stands up well as a solo piano and voice
Joni always makes me so emotional, what a gift to give to the world, her legacy will go on forever.BEAUTIFUL.
This is probably my most favorite album of Joni's.

Raw and beautiful. Nobody ever wrote like this A masterpiece.
Thanks for uploading.
One of my favourite songs. Depth that leaves you pondering and drowned, forever
I can't believe how few views this video has had. Very moving, beautiful Joni song, from an album that isn't played nearly often enough.
Thank you!

It's Shades of Scarlet Conquering with ONE T
Nope, just read and listen to the lyrics...
Just stunning.
Some nice chordal variations. Still miss the very evocative strings from the Album though. Either way, Joni, as ever, rules! :)

Very well done! I much prefer the demo version.
Better than the album version
Vivien Leigh
@FozzieBeth God forbid!
Six people don’t like Scarlett.
They're from the Helen Keller School (all due respect to Helen).
