    Yo as a 28 year old who has overcome some hardcore alcohol abuse (roughly 7 years) ; without any real motivation from seeing "role models" do it, I am really stoked to see sobriety becoming cool. That sounds sarcastic and loaded, but it couldn't be more authentic. I really hope that we serve as a voice to other people trying to find their strength. You got it. Just don't do it alone. I couldn't.

      a year and a month sober here and 28 as well. such a satisfying decision, I hope it becomes more main stream and drinking ends up being more frowned upon. Maybe kind of like how cigarettes are looked at now.

    Been struggling staying sober myself lately. Soon as I get off work or get towards the weekend I get the worst desire to go and get a drink. I’m still healthy so far but I feel like it’ll only make my life harder in the long run. I have hobbies but those only seem to last so long till I wanna crack that can or hit a bottle again. Shit is so tough. Mad respect to anyone that has maintained their sobriety. I will be there one day if nature doesn’t take me out first.

    It took me a few bumpy years to finally stay sober. The bumpy years included going to meetings and rehabs etc. I eventually quit going to meetings, they kept me around fellow addicts and hearing the war stories or befriending one of the other guys eventually led me to relapse. I had to quit all my former friends. They weren't changing and I needed to. I white knuckled it as he says, and I stabilized and my brain got back to its normal state after a year or so. Then eventually the urges and cavings went completely away another year or so. You can only get sober if you truly want it. My first few years of trying I didn't truly want it. Once I did, the hardest part of getting sober was done. I also took up video games, and now unfortunately I'm addicted to that. However it doesn't make me do stupid things that could get me in trouble.

    He was speaking on rewarding himself with that drink after he felt like he accomplished enough for the day.. is good he quit there because that’s the stage right before you just don’t give a fuck

    • @josephgood2704
      @josephgood2704 3 роки тому +1

      I'd say you can go through the stage where you didn't quite get done with enough but you ARE going to drink. And the stage where weekends become a 12 pack a day minimum but none during the week. For me just not giving a fuck never really starts until I start drinking to kill the hangover.
      The recovery difference from 3 nights drinking where I had a solid 12 hours of sobriety and recovery every day while drinking gallons of water and eating 3 meals compared to the recovery from 3 days of just never letting myself get sober is where the risk/reward of getting SUPER fucking sick for a couple days vs maintaining drinking a double shooter every few hours and pounding at night to sleep, actually becomes a thought in my mind that sounds logical.

    Ive had little to no alcohol since end of April last year. After having my 8th brain surgery, I just figured now was the time to start recovery both from surgery and alcoholism having a month off of work. Couldnt be any happier, I love waking up feeling great each day and actually remembering how my nights end. For the most part it was fun while it lasted but the bottle had a tight grip on me for the past 3 years. I still be drinking even after bars close and get home to continuing the madness until i passed out the next morning, Thankfully that's all behind me and intend to keep it that way

    I stopped drinking about a year ago after indulging a little too much from 17-23...I'm 24 almost 25 now...the only problem now is i always catch myself saying I'm sober but then correct myself and say "but i mean I smoke weed so I guess im not completely sober" Ill never stop smoking weed though. Helps immensely with mental health! I've always had some anxiety and OCD issues since my early teens but when I lost my little brother due to suicide back in 2017...everything was amplified and I even had a few new problems to deal with. Didn't want to rely on pills so I turned to the bottle...later with help from my family and God I realised how dumb and inconsiderate I had been. So now with no booze and no pills I still had weed...and that was more than enough. I still struggle on a daily basis with OCD, anxiety, depression, and even PTSD...but God, family, and the good ole green ganja get me through life! I do highly recommend trying some medical cannabis if you are struggling! One love 💜

    I got sober at 19. I have 16 years now. Lemme give my 2 cents:
    1. The only time you can relapse is when you’re sober. Seems like “duhhhh!” But, that means the most dangerous relapse time is when you’re sober. This means something beyond alcohol and drugs happens that causes us to relapse. This “thing” is what leads me to part 2
    2. Sobriety is great. 12 steps is great. Meetings are great. But at some point you will most likely find you have to deal with your specific demons that lead you back to relapse. This is unique for each person and therefore the solution is unique. 12 step programs are one-size-fits-all programs, but it also says in the literature “we only know a little, go speak to a fucking doctor!” I’m paraphrasing lol.
    I was severely suicidal with 10+ years sober. I thought I was uniquely broken because the 12 steps (which I did 5 times) didn’t solve my problems. Turns out I just have clinically diagnosed depression/amxiety and seeing a professional therapist specializing in CBT therapy helped me overcome suicidal thoughts, helped me learn new ways to control my thinking and showed me that I actually have way more control over my thoughts than I thought (and than 12 steps says I do).
    The 12 steps allowed me to process my deepest darkest bullshit and I was able to freely talk about it. This was insanely helpful. It didn’t however relieve me from those demons which would lead me back to drink. Therapy (and some meds) helped me complete the recovery journey.
    My point is DO NOT have such a big head (like me) that you shut down other help! The book says we shouldn’t do this and science has evolved immensely since 1930s when the book was written.
    Embrace all aspects of life

      Congrats and I appreciate all the insight. I definitely agree that for a lot of people the hardest part is dealing with those inner demons. My psychiatrist and a good CBT therapist have been immensely helpful in healing my severe benzo addiction. I'm still tapering (I risk having more seizures going cold turkey) but taking like 10x less than my normal binges and am almost down to zero. There are helper meds for a lot of withdrawals that can be very helpful and non-addictive. Proper medication can be a huge help in addition to CBT therapy.
