Ryan Sheckler: I couldn’t stop drinking
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 тра 2024
- X Games gold medalist and former MTV reality star Ryan Sheckler discusses the role his mom plays in his life, including the moment he called to tell her he needed help battling alcoholism. Sheckler says the day he went to rehab was the scariest day of his life, because he had to fully surrender to the program. The skateboarding star candidly shares details of a 2020 relapse that started around his 30th birthday and lasted five months, plus how a newfound focus in his Christianity created positive change in his life and an inspiring call from Michael Phelps that helped fuel Sheckler’s sobriety.

Honestly seeing Ryan Sheckler put himself out here like this is super brave and great for skateboarding culture
He looks a lot better then he use to. I say he looks his age. Tattoos might throw it off a bit
The dudes being leached on by all the blood suckers around.... And they have him right where they want em.....
@Carson Runnells who the fuck do you hang out with ?!?! Skateboarding bringing people to satanism ?? Lol
This dude probably wasn't drinking that much lol he exaggerates . Also lied about El toro
The amount of skaters who self-medicate with beer and weed is massive. That's the culture that I was drawn to. It was manly, it was rebellious, and it was exciting. But oh so dangerous bc you don't know you're in too deep until it's too late
Glad to see he's sober. Im a recovering alcoholic and heroin addict. Ive
been sober going on 2790+ days and I can totally relate to him because
it was my mother who was the only person who stayed by my side and
brought me to rehab. Awesome to see skaters getting sober and being
better role models to the younger skate generation... because it was the
piss drunks I grew up idolizing and made me think partying and skating
go hand in hand. Those guys are all sober now too. One day at'a time.
Man, I can't believe he's only 31. I feel like his name has been around forever.
Bro
He definitely doesn’t look 31, he looks more like 41.
he won gold at 13 thats insane
Facts
he aged really bad honestly. he’s only 31 yet can pass for someone who’s in their early 40s. I guess the drugs got into him because 10 years ago he looked his age
17 months sober myself Iam proud to say iam blessed.
Nice, I'll be there in 19 months after I quit drinking in July.
Stay strong!
Good job dude. Keep it up!
Salute! 💪🙏
Keep it up I am 16 months sober best thing i did
Been clean and sober since 3-26-10. Best decision I ever made was to ask for help. AA saved my life and my family.
Thats a Beautiful thing.Keep it up.
Keep up the good work!
One day at a time!!

Sober for 2 years here!
15 years and still battling this opiate addiction. I'ma beat it though....Yeshua is Lord no doubt
The next day you have your dope and it's early enough in the day to call or go down there, go get on methadone or Suboxone! Your appointment probably won't be for like a week so you'll still have to do your thing in the meantime but make sure you make your appointment go get your first dose do what they say and just don't use if you're serious not getting clean once you feel good from the Suboxone or methadone you're not going to want to use but if you're not serious you're still going to have that itch in the back of your brain 15 years is a long time that's about how long it took me you can do it bro it's hard but you can definitely do it!
Stay strong buddy. I was a dope fiend for 9 years. Couldn’t go six hours without using. In July I’ll have 7 years sober. Just keep on putting in the work and don’t give up. Go to meetings, talk to people, and most importantly of all, don’t come up with reasons for yourself about why all those things might work for others but not for you. I thought meetings and sponsors and all were the lamest thing in the world, and I hated all the cliches. But at a certain point it starts to click
The amazing thing about God’s grace is not only the ability to forgive you, but also the strength He gives you when you start over. 7 years off dope this year
Yeshua is just a human. The Creator who can never die and is above the heavens and the earth and who created Yeshua, it is he who deserves all praise and glory.
@@yobro6053 good thing he rose from the dead and didn't stay dead...
Almost 2 years sober. AA saved my life. I love how this kid is open about it.
Same here brother - CA for me
Same here 2 years sober my daughter saved me took me 1 kid to change my life
Keep coming back gentlemen!
AA doesn't save people, Jesus does.
Congrats broskie I’m clean off opiates shit is good wish I could have that time back
It’s because he has an obsessive/addictive personality... it’s why he is such a good skater and is successful. But also is a curse with drugs, alcohol, etc..
Definitely. And I think there’s a definite connection between all these really successful people and addiction. They are obsessive over their sport, their music, their career and that same personality that is soo focused, these people are all in or not at all. They don’t do anything half way. Often there’s no balance.
Facts. I got an addictive personality. And it catches up to you. Good and bad.
@@brettfrimmer6567 especially people who are successful and famous very early on in life
@Win From Within lol facts
He is a person of extremes. Most addicts are. Sometimes the people who look the most hopeless are actually the ones who are most likely to make a huge comeback, once they find the right support.
Takes a lot of courage to speak honestly. Hats off to him. I was a fan before of his skating. Now, a bigger fan. Life's hard. You give up or you fight. Mad respect legend.
The fact that he’s passionate about his sobriety just shows he didn’t just get this talent for skating, but he’s just a really good person in general. MTV is what made me think of him differently as a kid. Like some punk ass. But he’s genuinely a really good dude.
Hey Mike, no one is good: „as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”“
Romans 3:10-12 ESV
Thats why we need Jesus, his perfection and sacrifice is the only reason why we can cine to the father: „“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”“
John 3:16-21 ESV
www.bible.com God bless you Mike.
Man he just inspired me. I have so much potential and I need to stop drinking
How old are you
Get help man I’ve never had a problem with alcohol but my family has had alcoholics and drug addicts life has so much to offer and never be afraid to admit you have a problem it’ll be the best decision you’d make
You can do it man
man im 27 been drinking everyday for the past 5 years... 3 days ago out of the blue i said im done with this shit.. tired of the fatigue hangovers, i started to lose interest in the things i loved, and i put drinking before anything really. a day later i see this interview come out and it just motivated me even more.. if i can stop you can stop. i just smoke weed now :) good luck you should quit

Been sober for 1 1/2 years. No AA no nothing. DR said your liver is severely damaged and you will die shortly. Sober me right up. Specially being a full time single father. My daughter deserves better
You're awesome !!! This comment inspired me. I quit drinking last November.
Single Dad as well. Was drinking a handle of Jim Beam a day to get rid of the stress. Kids needed their dad.
Way to go brotha 💪🏼You’re daughter’s lucky to have you.
I was a huge fan of Ryan growing up as I skated too. So awesome to see him in this place in his life and also talking about God and his faith.
Brave dude......to come clean about his addiction....to admit outloud in this day and age that he is a follower of Christ.....takes strength.....inspiring....appreciate your honesty Ryan....
I couldn’t believe those words were coming out of his mouth. What a testimony to the miracles Christ performs. I got the chills.
God help us all to be brave and testify that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, and the rapture is near. In these last moments before the end of the age of grace, many are deceived by the devil and scoffing at those who know Jesus is coming back. Stay armored up. Maranatha.
More delusional than brave. 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼
It Still blows my mind that actual grown adults still believe that nonsense! 🤦🏼
@@timsunderland5153 I've got plenty of evidence that God exists......What's yours that He doesnt?
I've been Clean and Sober since 2-20-2021. 79 days. My absolute longest time in the past 7 years was 33 days, which I felt was a huge accomplishment and a few occasions for 10-14 days. I'm also 31 years old. I got to the point that I was drinking 30,40 and sometimes more than 50 days in a row. 2017-2020 I stayed drunk an excess of 300 days every year or more.
It's not easy, but you can do it.

Ryan this is your testimony & it is POWERFUL. I can relate so much! My last drink was 1-5-19. I fully surrendered. I always had faith but my sobriety brought me so much closer to Him & His Word. I was raised to life a month after my 1 year sober... 2-1-20. Not everyone understands. Jesus is the way, the truth & the life!!! 🙌🏼❤️ I’m so proud of you & love seeing this vulnerability, you will help SO many.
Wow amazing ryan..I'm 38 and went down a similar path and also have gone to the lord.so amazing to see a man like u become humble let your ego go and surrender.the lord I'm sure is pleased with your turn around.
First step is admitting you have a problem with any addiction, addict's don't see that
First step to admitting you have any problem tbh... for the longest time I denied I had PTSD and abandonment issues.
Wrong. I admitted I had a problem 5yrs before I got clean. The first step is Rock Bottom.
The point is to get help before you hit rock bottom
@@dickfitswell3437 it is the first step to admit u have a problem, some people take years to get sober in my case after admitting i had a problem it took me 6 years, it was not only until i realized my life was at risk that i quit. Now finally i have the opportunity to be a better me i have taken courses on subjects online that i was always interested but couldnt do it because i was always drunk or hungover. I have time now to workout study and my family is proud of me. Alcohol took away at least a decade from me i am 31 now and its not too late for me to get into a good career and become that person everyone likes and not that person who offends everyone while intoxicated. God Bless

It’s crazy to see how life can turn out. These young kids run around on top of the world then boom. I’m not a skateboarder but I remember him on rob and big and he was like a 16 yr old phenom.
Me too I remember that too
So stoked to see your a Christian! Born again believer here too man and I have struggled with weekend drinking on and off most of my life. Thank you for your testimony! God Bless and stay Rad!
Shout out to this dude. There’s tons of people going thru the struggle. You are representing us well
Ryan is a true role model, skateboarding needs him.
Im geniunely happy watching this interview. Being real with yourself is probably the biggest key in life due to the decisions you'll make off of that. God bless whoever read this and know its never too late to face your inner self and become your true self
“Not in the cards for me” spot on. This is the line I told myself the last time I drank. A year sober soon
Ryan shows a great side of his life. I can relate with him so much. So happy he got back on track!
Much respect! He’s a sweet person I met him a few times at the Dew Tour. We all have places we go. When stress and other life’s challenges come up. I appreciate he opened up about this.
As someone in recovery I can’t tell you how comforting it is to see more and more people be open, honest and outspoken about their struggles with addiction. The public’s historical stigma of having an addiction and how it slots you as a person is the primary reason I believe most people won’t get help. That was the biggest barrier for me and it wasn’t until I met people struggling like me that I was finally able realize that I wasn’t alone in this fight and I should’ve be ashamed of it. Thanks for showing this type of content.
Much love brother
There's nothing to be ashamed of. Especially once you take accountability for wrong past actions and have the courage to change. That's pretty much the definition of being a quality human being and having self respect.
I love how in touch he is with his feelings. Loved it when he was like that on the show too. Very inspiring to just be you.
Oh fuck yea. I get filled with so much gratitude when I see people I looked up to as a kid get humble and vulnerable and talk about their struggles and how they found recovery.
As a person in recovery myself, these kinds of videos are inspiring.
“Felt this warmth come over me...” I love that Ryan mentioned this. Thank you Holy Spirit🙌🏼
How do you know it's the "Holy Spirit" he's feeling?
@Mark prolly because she’s felt it before
We know the feeling of the Holy Spirit with us, and the rapture really could happen any day. Jesus told us to watch- Matthew 24:42-44 and Matthew 25 for the wise virgins. It's a great motivator to know it's imminent. Maranatha.
@@WalkingbytheSpiritAlways that's nonsense. Why do you believe the Bible is anything more than an ancient book written by humans without any scientific understanding?

Amazing and open interview! Thanks. I’ve been drinking so hard it was making me shake in the morning. Prayed for strength, should be detoxed by tomorrow (hopefully) but most importantly, my heads clear and I’m thinking positive thoughts.
Ryan is so true open and honest, probably one of my favorite interviews I've watched to date nothing but respect
He got me when he said that he lived a very fulfilled life, when so many people blame their circumstances. This guy took personal responsibility and made that change. Respect!
Glad Ryan found something that is working, addiction is a lifelong battle for the overwhelming majority. Most of us have been or will be impacted by addiction in some way.
@Joel Moore Couldn't say it better.
Wisdom brother , wisdom and the truth
I was surprised when I learned threw this interview that Ryan was like me and couldn’t drink safely. I’m a few years older then him but did watch him grow up into the super star he is. He’s a beast and much respect for sharing his experience because that gives people hope.
Top 5 of the most authentic interviews I’ve ever seen. Best wishes Ryan.
Well what a refreshing dialogue and not pretentious or holding punches. Moving from one topic to another seamlessly and with an intent of purpose. Kudos to Ryan and his ‘family’ for truth in the journey. 🌟
This dude has been the man since I was a kid . So much respect for him
I wish my brother was more like this man. Takes a man to say they need help and go to treatment.

Amen!
Amen. Lots of fake Christians, and I was one of them in the Baptist church all my life until God started speaking to me on June 28, 2004. I have been on YT for over four years because the Lord told me to warn people that the rapture is happening. Don't want anyone to be left behind, but most are not born again. Praying someone will surrender to Jesus Christ completely today. It's not religion but a personal relationship.

Much respect for sharing your story Ryan, you've been an idol for so many and to show the darker side takes balls but is sooo important
He seems like a very down to earth dude, which is humbling to see. It takes a very special kind of person to be in the spotlight for their entire short life to not develop a huge ego. I’m glad he’s taking the right steps in life to feel better. Addiction is brutal I’ve been there and it takes a lot of courage to turn it around, god bless 🙏🏼

The day after is the absolute worst. Everything sucks
100%. I just became so sick of feeling like crap the next day. I just stopped. Haven’t thought about having a drink for 5 years. I know some people need help, And should always reach out if you can’t do it yourself. Drinking is a waste of time, money and is always full of regret.

I think the reason he drank again after initially getting sober is because it didn't feel normal to be sober. Count how long it's been partying and how long it was before partying and this concept makes sense. It really takes a strong human being to admit you have a problem, and not only that, but to embrace sobriety and tell others your story. I've been fascinated with Ryan's skating but honestly I now respect him on another whole level. Thank you Ryan and Graham for sharing a very intriguing success story. - Paul
So true. You're either finally getting to know you're true self or you're getting to know your sober self all over again. It can be scary at first but it's so worth it.
@@ShogunateDaimyo True that! I have no regrets being sober and feel so much better and clear minded. Some people get uneasy when I don't say yes to drugs or drinking, and I think this is because they can't imagine having a good time without using. People places and things really help too. I imagine Ryan knows that one. It's difficult at first, but you then realize who really are your friends and who aren't.

As a product of the skateboarding/punk rock culture of the 90s, I can attest to how easy it is to slip into the party lifestyle.
We are just a bunch of tatted up Peter Pans with a penchant for partying hard and livin day to day.

@Bleeding Edge Well, it's not that hard to understand the reason why. Those people mostly chose earning money and fame over living a sustainable and happy life. It's the prize they pay for always wanna be better, faster, richer, more beautiful than everybody else.
It’s because no matter how successful more often then not these people are spiritually dead inside. Not that being a monk in a desolate land somewhere will make you whole but the western model clearly does not work. I know people who pray and commit themselves to enlightenment and they aren’t complete either. It is the human condition and suffering and sadness is apart of it since happiness and euphoria is also there.
