I remember trying hl1 online multiplayer in an internet cafe. In one server, people just play normally, fragging, blasting, dying. I then showed them the gauss jump, and everyone turned into flying snipers. Turns out, they had a truce to not do the gauss jump, and once someone does that in front of them, just hell let loose.
More games should do what hl2 does with the crosshairs, getting to know your hp and a rough estimate of how much ammo you have left while you still look to your target is something I find extremely comfortable. And yeah, also check out hl1's deathmatch, if you miss arena shooters, apart from a bunch of quake games, hl1 is the only one with an active playerbase.
You can still play in Half-life 2: deathmatch. And the crosshair can be changed for example by setting “hl2dm hud by Pred”, that's what I recommend to do

Back in 2007 Valve did an offer, for people with ATI/Nvidia cards you could get half-life 2: deathmatch for free, being a kid with no experience with PC games and no money it was my first mouse-based FPS, and man even when you got bored with deathmatch; there were Surf servers, Roleplay servers where you accrue virtual currency based on how much time that you spent on the servers, Puzzle Maps where there were a number of doors that teleported you to a puzzle room and you had to complete them all to eventually complete the final puzzle, Co-op maps where you all work together to defeat waves of enemies and work your way through rooms to a final boss, people could accrue points and spend those points on skins and such. It really opened my eyes to PC gaming as a kid, because i knew nothing about it and didn't know anyone who knew anything about PC gaming either, i reckon this is what got steam on most peoples PC's in the early days and why its such a dominant game marketplace today.
Definetly feel like the whole competitive aspect of "oh i need to have this icon next to my name to tell me how good i am at the game" and basing and balancing games around this one concept sucked the fun out of a lot of games for a lot of people, instead of just getting good naturally and having fun you're being constantly put down by a system that sometimes you didn't even ask for, what with lots of games having SBMM in casual gamemodes too nowadays. Go play Quake, UT, DooM DM, or any other casual game with an insane skill ceiling and no ranking system and you'll feel the skill gains guaranteed if you stick with them, it's super addicting.
Yeah this game is my favorite FPS Multiplayer of all time. I used to love that map where you're in a gigantic toy room (scaled up so everything is like 1000 times bigger), hiding under beds, camping in the ceiling! Everyone afraid to go out into the open. Heheheh! The gravity gun and the crossbow were epic!
I remember that map. Actually im pretty sure there were multiple variations of them. One had some secret access that lead you to the ceiling through a dark room full of glass panels and weird lighting. I played it alot back in 2005-2006 as a kid. It has some weird sense of nostalgia for me, and it feels like a fever dream trying to reminisce it almost 2 decades later now. Might have to hop in hl2 dm just to see if i can find that map.
@@paskaalisaapaskaa5354 Great idea, very glad someone else remembers this map, it was SO fun! There were also tons of custom 'puzzle maps' that people just adored.
hello fellow gamers, I welcome you all to come visit our little corner of the internet to see HL2DM's oldest running server, SoCal. Don't let the large initial download scare you away, we have tons of game modes, custom player models, etc. hope to see you on!
This game has been sitting in my library for years since I got the valve complete pack and I never tried it. Always assumed there was nobody playing due to how old it is. Installing it rn.
Hell YES I had such a blast with this, quite honestly this is what initially got me into game design, and now im working passionately on Operation: Black Mesa as well as various little indie games. There were so many completely unique servers with creative custom content. One that really stood out to me was a server called Chapel, which hosted a map with a bunch of buttons that allowed players to spawn an assortment of props, and instructions for console keybind commands to freeze and unfreeze props you would carry with your gravity gun. People would build elaborate multistory makeshift buildings furnished with junk, and even program contraptions, puzzles, minigames, races, obstacle courses. This would become the precursor for Garrys Mod, and who would've known how much boundless creativity would be unleashed from this game.
Another reason to play is is because there will be servers to play on while all the live service games continue to die. Valve could disappear tomorrow and you could still play online because you can directly connect to a server if you know the IP
I've played this with a friend on multiple occasion, it's our go-to fuck-around-for-no-reason game. The game is included in the orange box so many people have it even if they don't realize it.
I remember hitting those CLEAN Grenade + Grav.Gun Quickswitch + Longshot launch combos. And clean 357 shots. This game was a blast, didn't know it still had players.
Always has had players. It has multiple Discords now too, with the main one having ~450 members, though the smaller ones, such as SoCal, have more active conversation and events.
HL2DM was one of the first games I got into the online for when I was a teenager. This is mostly nostalgia talking, but the rush I got of being on a hot streak in that game, blasting Breathe by The Prodigy in the background has always stuck with me and has been difficult to match. Just mowing down foes while a guy yells "Come play my game, I'll test ya!" ...God dammit, now I definitely have to reinstall it.
I spent a ton of time playing hl2:dm around 2008 or so spent a good portion of the time in puzzle maps or trying to do the thing where you make a see-saw with two props, stand on one end, shoot an energy ball from the ar-2, then grab it with the grav gun and shoot the other end of the see-saw launching you into the air good times also, shout out to mortadella sandwich, I don't know him but he's got a delicious name
I wish this love was shared for the unreal tournament franchise aswell 😢 it's hanging on by Duct tape and hope from the community since epic stopped caring years ago.

good point about "dead games". even games with barely 100 players on steam charts can feel just fine to play. all you really need is one or two servers that are at least half full in most older games
