Lifelong dog person here. My last sweet baby passed 6 months ago. Not long after, a stray cat literally wandered through my dog door, and decided to stay. I'm still trying to figure out how to interact with and care for this mysterious foreign beast. Wish me luck! 😂

I agree. Remembering frugal and practical attitudes my grandparents' generation had, it sounds unbelievable that ancient people would waste food for vain reasons. Also, I doubt that there used to be as much trash laying around as it is now, as food was much more scarce. In all the stories in folklore, cats are said to be kept to control mice. Also, dogs were domesticated around ~30000 years ago, the oldest rat killing dog breeds are only 600-500 years old. This theory that cats had no purpose makes no sense to me.

Cats may have originally come from nature, but now they are domesticated. They depend on humans for survival and they are not truly happy unless they have a human whom they love and whom loves them. I strongly disagree with the premise of this video that cats can have a meaningful life without a caretaking human - it’s just plain wrong. They would survive only so long and they would suffer many calamitous health issues.
They don’t “learn to put up with humans.” They desire relationship with humans.

There are many researchers & scientists who believe cats significantly affect the bird population, and I agree. The birds have enough predators w/o adding pet cats. Mine is a hunter and he would kill a bird once a week, lizards several a day, and the adorable tiny wild rabbits that everything wants to eat whenever he discovers one. He caught an injured baby crow , and since I always left the patio door open cat-width, he brought it in to the garage. I let it loose and the neighbors cat went for it- the parents pecked his eye out, so he suffered a painful injury and lost sight in that eye. It could’ve happened to mine. We also have coyotes hunting pet cats in our neighborhood. After that day, he could not go out again.
I know he loved the outdoors, it makes me sad, he was probably happier, but I have to keep him safe.

A feral kitten got trapped in my apartment wall--I don't know how. But eventually, I trapped him and so I named him Jerry in honor of the how Tom tries to capture Jerry with his traps. Then I adopted him.
Now, his gf moved in after giving birth to his kittens. They're awesome.
And I'm not a cat person per se, but they are intriguing. They may not serve an original practical purpose but they are entertaining. They soothe my soul and bring a smile to me

I train with my cats. They come when I call, they sit on command and so on.

23:56 - Cats didn't evolve or tap into this sensory bias we have for that sound range. It's always been the same as human babies. It is why lions have confused the sound of a crying human child as something they need to protect. This has been explained in the past as to why lions have sometimes been found guarding crying human children in the wild.

40:53 The black coat of a domestic cat is the result of the presence of a pigment called eumelanin; it's not the result of the “absence of colors.” The black color in a cat's coat is due to a high concentration of eumelanin in the fur, which results in a black appearance; it's a single color produced by the presence of this particular pigment.

I'm always afraid to let my Drako(my Profile)or Delilah out to roam.. I'm afraid I might not see them again and would be devastated..
My Drake was a TNR cat that I adopted,Lala(Delilah) was a young 10 month ish old cat I met at work on the street, she had no chip, needed vaccines, and very fickle about food,I think she was a kitten born on the street but just got tired of doing it like that.. she absolutely chose me,she picked me out everyday for about a week before she came home with me.. changed my life..
I just worry something will happen to my little companions if I let them roam,I do take them out for play time/walks in the backyard so they're not stuck inside, cause I do feel bad about keeping them inside, but I can't protect them if I don't see them

She is not skittish whatsoever. One of the best cats i have ever had, and I have had some awesome cats with amazing personalities. We love our mama kitty. She is getting older and has developed diabetes. We are going to miss her so much when she is gone. 😢 I am so glad we saved her. She has been such a wonderful part of our family. I will keep her healthy and alive for as long as she can! ❤

Informative! I am a huge Jackson Galaxy fan. Some of the opinions in this documentary are different than his, like why cats where domesticated in the first place. He though it was for hunting barns, etc. After reading the comments I see that others question some of the opinions in this. Either way, cats are special to us humans. I love my tuxedo cat, Tux. He a little over a year old.

It was probably a mix of both arguments. Surely cats were generally appreciated for eliminating rodents, but I imagine many were kept around just for being pretty, cute, and interesting.

Don't forget that the information given in this video is from scientists who not only study all the ins and outs of cats but their behaviour as well. Whereas Jackson Galaxy is I believe a cat behaviourist. I would, however, as the previous statement said, go along with a bit of both. Having had the pleasure of sharing my home with cats for many years now and watching their behaviour, some (not all) are brilliant hunters, while others have absolutely no idea what to do with a bird or mouse once they've caught it. They do make wonderful companions and are a lot smarter than some people give them credit for.

Cats are hunters and they will hunt & kill rodents. That keeps rodents away and ancient to modern farmers appreciated that.

The problem is that too many people want cats to behave and be obedient like dogs, instead of being what they are, ie little lions in our living rooms. Let's stop trying to change them and, instead, admire their wildness and be happy that they share any part of their lives with us at all.

Interesting and very informative. On the topic of feral cats and length of time it can take to form a bond with one, I once had one female feral who took up residence in my yard. I had plenty of spaces where she could sleep and exist safely so when she showed to be pregnant, I made arrangements, when she was ready, to have the kittens fostered and adopted out. I had her brought back as I had made plans to feed her and let her live where it was wArm and comfortable. I then started the task of getting her to bond with me and it took 6 years to get her to jump in my lap and snuggle. She was a sweetheart to me but would only allow one other person, my granddaughter, the same privilege.

The wild type cats were of Asian body type, although the sire was more like a British short-haired. They were definitely not happy around people, except for the food and warm digs. My white female did not get the memo that she was not a hunter. All of her life there would be snakes, rodents, frogs, and all sorts of creatures on my porch or even in the house if I opened the door unaware that she had some thing. She taught her children well because her grey son also hunted everything. When you have cats that Enjoy hunting and are great hunters it's a never ending life of praising them for their accomplishments. I did not get the white mother from anywhere in particular, she was in a box in front of a grocery store. I will say though, I lived in an area that was not heavily populated and the houses were very far apart. She was an indoor/outdoor cat who went out at night and always came back in the morning. In the winter she still wanted to go out at night and we were sometimes afraid for her because of the snowy and cold winters in upstate New York, but she was very smart and in winter she would not stay out too long. My grandmother also found a little black and white kitten who grew up to be a master hunter. She saw her cat on the lawn jumping straight up into the air very, very high and brought a bird down. My grandmother loved birds and she was brokenhearted but she could not bear to scold the cat she loved. She lived in residential Pennsylvania in a neighborhood where the houses had good room around them and the yards were large.

Structured playtime at set times can help with this a lot (same with a scheduled mealtime). Also, you CAN harness train a cat or get a stroller for them. Or a cattio. They can still have supervised outdoor time even with FIV so long as you are careful.
FIV doesn't need to be a death sentence, you just have to be hyper vigilant with their health and do everything you can to prevent them from being sick. Thank you for being responsible and keeping him indoor. . .both of our boys were strays we took in. . .one of them has FIV as well and it can be scary. . .but they can live just as long and fulfilled lives as any other cat.

Keeping Cats indoors has extended their lifespans and improved health, but a compromise with a Catio to stimulate their senses and satisfy curiosity is a better compromise. I can’t afford a Catio so I have Bird feeders & Bird houses just outside my windows so they have essentially “Bird tv” that also attracts Squirrels. Some of my Cats have even developed playtime with curious Squirrels that come to the windows knowing the Cats can’t hurt them & learn to play games that stimulate both animals. I’ve lived 67 yrs with Cats & wouldn’t have it any other way. They all have different personalities and temperaments and I have often adopted whole families. Adopting families I’ve found that they maintain lifelong bonds with their siblings/MaMas and develope other bonds with no related Cats, but tend to be closest with their own relatives. I currently have Cats from 3 families. One isn’t related to anyone but is peacekeeper and moves between the others & is revered/loved by all the others. One that is related to 2 others but moves between families freely, and the others stick mostly to their own siblings. I have been rescuing & fostering Cats/Kittens for more than 50 yrs & wouldn’t have it any other way. I also provide food & shelter for neighborhood Cats that aren’t entirely feral, but choose not to be a stable resident of any one home, or ones that get out or are left out by their owners & need shelter/food temporarily. The benefits and pleasure of Cats company is something I find makes my Life worthwhile, especially in my aging yrs.♥️🐈‍⬛

Even the mannerisms of lions, cougars and jaguars are all the same as housecats. If you know cats you can literally come upon a mountain lion and determine in short order whether you were truly in danger or not. The pre-hunting/strike movements are identical. Even lions as long as they're fed are just as sweet as housecats. They only become vicious when hunting because they have to be.

I adopted my cat from a shelter when she was 8. She had been there for months and I couldn’t understand why no one had wanted her. She was the most beautiful animal I had ever seen with taupe and midnight brown stripes on her back, a beige belly with sharply contrasted dark spots and piercing aqua green eyes. I held her once and I knew we had a special bond, despite never having been a cat person per se (I didn’t think cats liked me). She was scared and underweight when I brought her home. I didn’t force affection or even attention from her. I just spoke to her softly, fed her consistently at the same times everyday, and waited patiently with no expectations. She gradually started approaching me and when my husband was in the room (or anyone else), she would nuzzle herself under my arm and peek out. I was her safe space and that was just fine with me. As weeks went by, she would spend less and less time under the bed. She began nuzzling her head on my face, “talking” to me (her meow legit sounds like “hello” ☺️), running to greet me at the back door when I would get home, and sleeping in her safe space under my arm at night. She is now 13 and my family calls her my shadow because she is always by my side. Luna is healthy, happy, and sleeps on my pillow with her face touching mine every night. She hasn’t needed to hide under my arm for a long time but she knows I will always be her safe place. It’s truly a love like no other and I hope everyone gets to be a cats “person” at least once in their lives. ❤

Being an American, I believe that leaving cats outdoors no matter what is dangerous for them. I love dogs, cats, etc and thankfully I don't act like the British who murder dogs if they are a certain breed. I will never, ever understand why people act like idiots when it comes to animals. This video is informative even though it is from the viewpoint of the British. It is the cats who own us actually, not the other way around. Cats choose to live with us because quite a lot of them get tired of trying to survive on the streets since they know that it is dangerous. its cruel to keep cats indoors. they should be allowed to go out if they want to to get exercise.
House cats tend to be obese which causes health problems and shortens their lives.
outdoors plenty to keep them occupid so they dont get bored and just lay around all day eating and sleeping and not burning off the calories they consume.
ive got 2 cats both can go out as and when they please. 1 spends about 18 hrs a day out exploring his territory and is in perfect health and weight. the other 1 is more a house cat and chooses to stay indoors most of the time and only goes out to use the toilet. he is obese cause he doesnt get enough exercise but thats his fault for being lazy.
In the UK they dont put down healthy animals. we banned some dog breeds cause of how their geneticly alterd to make them look nice to some humans but its bad for their health like pugs and bull dogs have a lot of trouble breathing cause of the way they have been bred to have short snouts. some got banned cause their too aggresive and bred for dog fighting not as pets. when they attack humans they get put down as a dangerous dog. lots of dog breeds ahev been banned so no more can legaly be bred and the ones that r still around have to wear a muzzle instead of being put down.
Something more common in the USA than any other country is putting cloths on pets which is very cruel for the pets.
More healthy pets get put to sleep in the USA than any other country PETA being the worst offender.
lots of pets bought in the USA as a fashion item rather than love and caring. seeing some famous ppl walking around with little dogs in their handbags is cruel to the dog as it means they dont get to walk and can lose the use of their legs. only having their heads sticking out so they get too hot and die. that rarely happens in other countries.
A lot of Asian countries dont have cats and dogs as pets as their considered food some get cats and dogs to fatten them up to eat.
when i was younger lots of cats were going missing in the area i lived. turned out it was a chinese takeaway taking them and turning them into chicken curry and selling it.
The police got their just in time cause when ppl found out what theyr were doing they were going to kill the owners as the british hate cruelty to animals. most of us have a 0 tollerance to putting animals to sleep unless their in real pain.
I was in tears for months when i had to get 1 of my cats put to sleep when she was 3 years old as she had liver cancer and was in agony. didnt want to do it but didnt want her to suffer anymore. vet gave her 3 months to live and adviced me to put her to sleep to end her suffering. so walked out and left her their for the vet to end her life as i coulnt handle it.
UK has the best reputation in the world as animals lovers and anti cruelty USA has the worst.
I grew up with foster parents they had 2 dogs and 2 cats. the cats were very fat as they were never allowed out an only allowed in 1 room. I vowed i would never do that to a cat as they were just eating and sleeping and never moved around cause they were bored stiff. It was like they had depression and given up on life.
1 did get out 1 day and climbed over the fence and attacked and killed the doberman next door. poor dog didnt stand a chance. he was a Burmese cat. he spent all is time sitting on the TV no one could get near the TV to change channel as no remotes back then. any one tried it was claws out and scratching like crazy. that was him saying let me out im bored if u dont ill scracth ur eyes out.
If a cat spends a lot of time looking out the window its saying it wants to go out.
Lots of things in the home can kill a cat. household cleaners to wipe down surafces or moping the floor gets on the cats paws they lick it off and their poisoned. it can take years to kill them and they suffer as they cant tell u whats wrong.
another thing really bad for cats and dgs is hard floors like polished wood as they cant get a grip and slide all over the place and they cant stop and can break legs. if u have pets u should only have carpets.
Lots of flowers r toxic to cats as is most human food. Lillies being the worst every part of them can kill a cat just by rubbing against them or breathing in the pollen. it u see ur cat anywhere near a lily even in the same room u have to give it a bath before it has a chance to lick its fur or its poisoned.
There is websites u can look at that show what cats cant be anywhere near. House cats suffer more than outdoor cats with those.
Ive seen american cat food with salt in it which is bad for cats as they have 0 tollerance to salt. Tuna in cat food again deadly to cats cause of the salt and mercury in it. takes years to kill them though. Tuna is not even fit for humans to eat cause of the mercury in it. its 1 of the biggest causes of cancer. right behind cell phones and WiFi. cats being smaller get effected faster than humans do.

@@cliffbird5016 Outdoors generally have a much shorter lifespan than indoor cats
Outdoor cats hunt and kill for sport millions of birds every year and are responsible for the extinction of many song bird species
Outdoor cats are a pest to their neighbors, destroying their yard with fecal/urinary waste, digging, leaving the rotting carcasses of their kills, harassing/harming other pets
Outdoor cats run the risk of being hit by a car, killed by coyotes, killed by humans as pests, dying of poison set out to kill pests, dying of chemicals treating lawns, injuries from non-breakaway collers or just injuries in general
Outdoor cats run the risk of catching a myriad of differing diseases. Rabies, FIV, Feline Influenza that can spread like wildfire through an outdoor/feral population
Outdoor cats breed in excess, causing an overpopulation problem that can't be maintained
Outdoor cats get in fights with each other, leading to injury, infection, death
There are MANY ways to give an indoor cat an enriched and mentally stimulated life without risking their life wondering if they are ever going to come home at the end of the day. Many of the problems you list as being for cats are NOT happening to indoor with owners who actually do their research.
Both of our cats were strays, one of them was infact male. When we first saw him he had several scabs, one of them a very large one on a foreleg. The next time we saw him a month later, he weighed noticably less, his coat was in TERRIBLE condition, and he had still more minor scabs in various places on his body. We took him in. Vet informed us he has FIV which he would have gotten from fighting another cat either over terriroty or the fact he was intact. When he leaves us, at the end of hopefully a long enriched life, he is likely going to die quickly with little we can do other than to end his suffering because his immune system is comprised and ANY illness he gets could end his life prematurely. How is THAT a GOOD life?! He's also our little escape artist on harness. I am NOT going to risk infecting another cat with FIV just to take him outside when he clearly feels safer indoors. If I can find a harness he can't escape from, or get a cat stroller down the line? Then sure, they can have outside time. . .in the meantime they can wait until I get their cattio built and be content with playing with each other and playtime INSIDE where its SAFE.

@@anotherthez7598 Because unfortunately 'education' is severely lacking over here. I seriously don't think most people realize exactly what declawing entails. I'll admit, I didn't when I first considering a cat. . . research quickly told me. . .but we sadly can't convince most people to go beyond the 'omg cute kitten/puppy' idea and actually research the pet they're interested in.
There are steps being made to make it illegal. Hopefully soon those bans will be country wide, for now we can only stress education and hope people actually LISTEN.

Over several years in the past I had 14 cats. At one time or another there were several living in the house. And they all got along beautifully. I have photographs of them sleeping together in a pile. It was a lovely time. Now I have one cat only. He was feral, then lived in a warehouse by himself. He was brought to me and over a year or so he has become very tame and happy. He is attached to me as surely as any dog I have had. I do worry that he may be bored because he is kept indoors. The wild life around here could easily kill him. I find cats fascinating and endearing along with a certain pathos. I enjoyed this video very much.

It's why I love cats. They decided to love us.

I adopted a feral cat who was on her own for about 8mo before being turned over to a rescue. It took years! before she warmed up to me (but NO time for her to ingratiate herself with my other cats who were taken aback at first by her friendly overtures). She NEVER wanted to go outside and was especially distressed whenever it rained, even though she was indoors. Eventually she came to me twice a day, every day, for pets. She lived to be 16.

I have to laugh. You captured everything I think of my feline family members. A few years ago, I made a picture of a tiger and a mountain lion. I told my daughter, a cat lover with four cats, that this was a picture of my tiger cat and my half Siamese. My daughter poo pooed this but I now think that I was very close to the truth. I just happened to realize what my mini great cats were really all about. After all, they do hunt and stay aware of everything going on around them. Thanks for a great video.
