In ancient times, wildcats were fierce carnivorous hunters. And unlike dogs, who have undergone centuries of selective breeding, modern cats are genetically very similar to ancient cats. How did these solitary, fierce predators become our sofa sidekicks? Eva-Maria Geigl traces the domestication of the modern house cat.
Lesson by Eva-Maria Geigl, directed by Chintis Lundgren.

"Cats are not domesticated. They are wild animals that have consented to live with us. " - My Mom
True. Cats are not domesticated, they are just tamed.
And to be fair, we don't give them a choice in the matter. We often steal them from their mothers when they're too young to know any better, then refuse to let them leave.
It's half their fault, though. We humans don't care to keep things we don't find cute. If cats were just less cute, we'd stop stealing them. xD
This having 666 likes while I read it for the first time is a miracle that will never be replicated.

Honestly I don't know how they didn't put it together. The cat was obviously the common denominator in three sunken ships!
I thought 6 more ships were going to sink.
He was called ‘The Hidden Paw.’
Didn't they say it proceeded to serve on 3 more ships ONE of which also sank? So two not 3
The most amazing part about cats is that humans are literally the only other species that they fully acknowledge and communicate with. Cats speak to us. They look us in the eye. They speak to no other species except for the occasional bird and mouse chatter or meowing at a familiar dog, and hissing at strangers. The friendly chatter and meow, meowing back at us while looking at us, everything that we hear from our cats is directed solely at us, no one else. Not to the other cats, not to the dog, but only for us, and that’s pretty amazing if you think about it.
❤ thank you for this.. I have conversations back and forth with mine all the time.. I never really thought they don't do it to others
@@josephiniewa3454 , I have communicated with all sorts of animals this way.
@@paxhumana2015 same, most animals tend to like me, I think its more to do with how you behave around them because they have a good sense!
True. I have a very talkative cat. He often meows for no discernible reason. If I meow at him, he'll meow back at me and we can have some sort of conversation. However, he doesn't meow at my other cat or my dog. He's either meowing at nothing or at me/my bf. By contrast, my dog barks at us, other dogs, the cats, squirrels, etc.
the thing about a bond with a cat is it’s a friendship. you both occupy the same space and you need to learn to accommodate each other. conversation is just a natural part of that kind of relationship. they’re pretty intelligent creatures, my cat recognises my specific car engine and comes running up the street along side me every time i come home, just to be met with frantic meowing when i get out. it’s a very unique bond because one never fully understands the other but through time you come to an understanding

I had a cat who lived to be 18 years old. She was incredibly loving and affectionate. She liked all people so long as they had hands and laps. She talked to me constantly and slept next to my pillow every night. When I was sad, she refused to leave me and would crawl up to my face and purr until I felt better. She was basically the nicest person I knew. She died in my arms when I was 7 months pregnant with my first baby. She was a good cat, and lived a good life. She took good care of me until she knew I would be ok with a baby to replace her. I am glad all cats are not like her, because then she wouldn’t have been as special as she was. RIP Willow.

My grandfather was a merchant sea captain. He wrote many letters to my grandmother during the 1930s, while he was at port in England, Europe and South America, until February 1942 when his ship was torpedoed by Nazis off the New Jersey coast and he was killed along with his crew. My father, his son, was only 4 years old when his dad died. One letter, particularly, is lovely to read. He writes about discovering a cat onboard his ship after departing from Venezuela. He took that as a sign of "good luck" and enjoyed the cat's company in his own cabin. I love cats, too. No idea what became of that kitty. I do know that the captain of the ship which discovered my grandfather's lifeboat after his own ship had been shelled to the bottom ascertained that 2 men out of approximately 20 total crewmen survived, after rescue, for a short time. All others had frozen to death in lifeboats, including my grandfather. His body was set adrift in the Atlantic to be claimed by the waves. I still hope that kitty made it, somehow. Sigh.

In other words, cats are only domesticated because they want to be
In other other words, humans are only domesticated because we want to be
Yes.
They aren't actually domesticated. Not like dogs are, cats are just co-existing with us. There's been some interesting research on it lately
@@sir_ventt8142 If they were co-existing they would live with humans on their own accord and not be bred to be pets then bought in stores or adopted. People have been keeping and taming for thousands of years so yes, they are domesticated. It's called a domestic cat for a reason. Just look at the difference between a house cat and a wild cat it's pretty obvious.
@@leeks5750 yes you are right in a way. To be domesticated is for a human or animal to live in human society following the human way of life. To be a pet is to be a tamed animal kept for companionship or pleasure.
so humans are just as much pets to cats and some of our other pets as they are all to us but all animals that live with humans are domesticated.
You did not mention companionship. Many military personnel have a cart simply for companionship for PTSD. My son always has a cat. I lucked out I adopted an unadoptable feral cat. She is trainable but I doubt she will ever be completely domesticated. She is my companion, my entertainment, and when needed she calms me. We are both retired military. It's almost incorrect to say that house cats are domesticated. The best explanation I've ever heard was "they like us, and we like them."
I'll say! I family cat spends time with us, only when he wants to. Then he's off exploring the outdoors- and bringing home a friend or two.
Why would you want them to be dependent of you anyway, doesnt that kinda says something about us?
@@artv.9989 yes, society today has a worrying habit of infantilising pets especially dogs and cats. And one of the reason people prefer dogs is because dogs are more dependent - which is quite selfish if you consider how helpless that makes the animal.
a cat is basically a roommate
@@Sawrattan People don't like dogs because they're dependant, they like dogs because they're more social than cats, basically because they lived in geoups before humans domesticated them, thus making them better companions, while cats needed to adapt to human civilization to get mildly social.
The more social an animal is, the easier it can become an ideal companion.

Which means cats are perfect right from the very beginning
Cats have gone thousands of years of selective breeding too. Funnily enough, if we look at the sociability of an animal without long periods of selection as a measure of perfection, then rats would rank at the top as pets. Just over a century of selective breeding and they're the most sociable pets around. Most of that breeding wasn't actually focused on sociability either.
More like millenia; prolly hundreds of thousands of years. Cats are quite recent in domestication.

An Egyptian prince, I believe he was Thutmose II, had a cat that he loved dearly. He apparently gave her the name Ta-miut; from what we can decipher of the ancient Egyptian language, "ta" denotes a feminine noun and "miut" is a sort of onomatopoeic word for cat. So he essentially named her Miss Kitty. And when she died, the prince entombed Miss Kitty in her own sarcophagus, complete with a relief carved on the side depicting her seated in front of a table loaded with food offerings.
Slight correction: Miu means cat in Egyptian and you make a noun feminine by adding a 't', so Miut in itself already means 'Female cat'. The "Ta" in the name I'm not really sure about. I have seen the suggestion it's just an article, but my book says there aren't any indistinct ones in the Egyptian language. It certainly isn't the word 'country', which is also read 'Ta', because the letters used on the cat's sarcophagus are different.
Also the prince's name was just Thutmose, no number, because he died young and his brother Akhenaten took over (and we all know how crazy that went). What you probably also had in mind was Pharaoh Thutmose III who lived 1480 BC and whose cat "Nedjem" ("Sweet", or more fittingly, "Sweety") is the oldest named cat we know of.
Aw “miss kitty”. How sweet. :)
@@dschehutinefer5627 I'm putting Nedjem in my cat name list.

Haha that meow is so hilarious. I love this video
Another fun fact: cats will naturally form colonies with sisters and their offspring, communally sharing their kills and taking care of each other's kits. So, the reason your cat brings back excess kills is that they see you as part of their family-either as a sibling or parent-and want to feed you and take care of you.
working cats know their part of a partnership this is why well feed cats will often hunt more than feral cats, they understand that killing verman is their job and want to earn their keep.

My favorite thing is how all cats are born feral. Any kitten you will ever meet, is initially a hissy, angry baby... and humans have to actively work to make them love us.
It just sets in stone that cat's are with humans by choice. They like us XD. They invented a whole new language/ sound just to communicate with us that we find pleasant!
Cats are the best!
We had a friend who was doing research and a paper for college, so she bred two ancient breeds together and proved they went back to the felis sylvestris lybica, not the felis chaus as she had theorized. There was one other part of her theory she proved correct but I don't remember all of it as it was many years ago. We got the lybica and he was awesome. Ferocious with prey and strange dogs, cuddle bum with everyone else. Used to love to give nose kisses to family, and would let my husband drape him around his neck when he came home from work. The animation is THE best. Exactly the right visuals, facial expressions, meows, love this….lol.
Once in my lifetime there was a neighborhood cat. He's always avoiding people.
One night, he took a shelter under my room window when raining. I opened the window, and offered some foods. He hesitated. So I left my window open with the foods. Next morning, the foods were gone. But the night, he came again, waiting for the foods. I gave him again.
Since then, he always showed up every time I came home at night. Jumped out to the window, and entering my room, sleeping, and woke me up on the morning.
Sadly, it just happened for a year and half. I never seen him again. I never had chance to adopt him because of everyday work. But that's beauty of it. I feel being loved because we cared eachother even though there's no a contract between us.
It's a shame dogs have gone through so much selective breeding, it's caused so many health problems for them. Glad cats were left alone.
Especially pugs and other small dogs.. i feel bad that they have such a hard time breathing
... then you have the munchkin breed. They are so short that it causes them to have problems jumping, running and breathing.
Cats also face the same problem. I have seen very short-faced cats, they're basically concave.
But cats weren't left alone, you have Persians with breathing problems and munchkins with stubby limbs.
ramona lynn Munchkins actually aren’t that bad. Unlike dogs, cats are super flexible so they have less issues with stumpy legs than dogs do. The British fold on the other hand is just cruel because the thing responsible for the ears also puts the cat in tremendous pain.
i personally hate when people call cats mean, it's just in their nature to be fierce and mighty. i respect how cats don't allow humans to restrain them, that they are not less of a creature than a human is. that's why i'm never really angry at my cat for trying to bite or scratch me, because they have feelings and moods too, what we can't control.
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
So true. I feel the same about my two.
"feelings and moods too, *which we can't control."

@@dannyboygregory-mccormick9157 Ha ha!I have a "vicious" Aspie cat named Rocky. He is awesome and definitely has a mind of his own.🐺He can be very cuddly when he wants to,but beware if he doesn't want to!!;)
Coolest comment string EVER!😇
thx for making the video like this its really not shaking at all
I loved the comedic, and informative animations. Very entertaining.
When His Royal Meowness wakes up from his sixtieth nap of the day and finally vacates the comfy chair I bought for myself but never get to use because He prefers it, I'll show him the video.
Teacher: Why are you laughing?
Me: nothing
My brain: *m u s c u l a r c a t*
You should see my cat 😂
yep, my imagination goes straight to Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda movie... 🤣🤣🤣

You can still see the difference between working "farm cats" and house cats. If not fed food by the humans (complicated issue, I know) the cat eventually becomes the 'super-predator" the video talks about, hunting like crazy. They become much more muscular and lean.
The animations in this video are super unique, wholesome, and awesome
Cats had a massive part in Viking society as no new household was complete without a kitten - a blessing from Freya on the house. This led largely to the self domestication of Norwegian forest cats, friendly docile huge Wildcats (and one of the least genetically altered breeds).
Freya is pretty she had cats!!! : D
@@cccaaa702 magnus chase!!!
The Vikings got one thing wrong, though...even for Freya, no cat would get into a harness and pull a chariot!
Adopted one from local shelter.
I don’t want a history lesson, I wanna see narcissistic cats telling us how great they are and we are all their slaves.

that's what i came here for...i feel like the title is slightly clickbait :/
Clickbait. Disliked.
Whoever voiced the cats, did an extremely good job.
Love the story of unsinkable sam-should be made into a movie.
Cats have played a pivotal role in human history.
We think we own them but they probably think they own us.
Most of the time, they see you as simply another animal.
Cats often treat humans the same way they treat other cats.
They don't think they own us, they just tolerate us.
They often pick out the hoomin they want to take/go home with.
I've heard cats meow to communicate with humans as oppose to with each other.
We do
@@hiiamacat8605, right on...
My cat is odd. He's so friendly, he could give any dog a run for it's money. He follows me around the house and paws at closed doors if I'm on the other side.
I have an eight month old baby who likes to grab things. I've given up trying to protect the baby and the cat from each other. My cat likes to lay with the baby while she plays and she likes to rip out handfuls of fur and play with his whiskers. If I move one or the other, the damn cat moves back into fur pulling range
Cat must protect small hooman big magic food hooman presented cat even at risk of fur loss
Crazie Ghostie That's adorable.
When I was a baby we had a cat too. My mum said she wouldn't let anyone get close to me and always slept next to me.. She thought of me a her kid 😂😂. Too bad she died when I was 4 I barely remember her now..
This is blessed.
He thinks he is a dog.
I love the meowing at the beginning😻😻
I love how the meow changes each time.
The animation could not be more perfect for this
Really your animation inspire us..
@@maya_yaser not you
Love the wit of the animation here.
okay but i just paused at 4:02 and looked at my cat that was sleeping in front of me for a sec, he was sleeping exactly like that 😭
I’m a dog person, but even I must admit cats are tough.
Dogs die from chocolate, while Cats survive German Battleships.
‘cues Sink the Bismarck music’
Actually some cats would die if they eat chocolate
@@g2ltt733 allergic?
@@truthboom idk, my neighbor cat got feed chocolate by a boy and then after a hour or something he die, pretty sad!
chocolate is more toxic to cats than dogs. but they ate less likely to eat it
no most animals including cats can't eat chocolate it's toxic JFC
"Every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat"
yes. the cat owns them
So true
Yes cats own us
My cats are pretty much just rude roommates at this point 😂😂
@@georgewashington7293 here comes the general!
My next door neighbour were a couple of nurses who'd met in India at the beginning of WW2. They were being sent back to Britain through the Suez Canal in the DDay build up. They got to The Med on the hospital ship, you know BIG Red Cross on the side. A bit like catnip, well they were sunk. Rescued, sunk again the same day, and rescued by my father's transport ship of to land in Sicily. I miss dad and my aunties Den and Jessica. They're a couple of the people that makes me hope there's an after life.
the art on this and the previous cat video is honestly sending me in this the year of our lord 2021
