That’s the magic, that’s the ART, you both were feeling different emotions, and both found different meaning in the song because you were feeling different
I saw them perform this in '88 in Chicago. After the guitar introduction Gilmour began to sing. he got off the first couple of words then the audience joined in so loud that we completely drowned him out. At some point a surprised Gilmour just stepped back from the mic and let the audience sing as he continued play along with us on guitar. It felt like a giant 20,000 member choir singing in unison in pretty good tune I might add. It was quite a moment. A seemingly impressed Gilmour finally joined back in at the chorus.

4:32 You absolutely hit the nail right on the head. Dave Mustaine once said “David Gilmour can do more with one note than most guitarists can do with an entire fretboard”
This took me back to my teenage years! We would sit in a circle, listen to this song in complete silence and after that we would sing it from the top of our lungs! Such good music! It feeds our soul and cells! I feel emotional every time.
Wow guys thanks for doing this, one of the most beautiful songs ever written made better by a stunningly emotional live performance, when Dave matches the high pitched guitar with his voice is just beyond belief
George, don't apologize for getting emotional. I lost my best friend of 23 years, 6 years ago. He was 37 & we were more like brother & sister. We weren't talking at the time which breaks my heart even more. I miss him sooooo much! I've gone through a lot in my life, but nothing broke me like his death. I was very emotional during this song as well! It's a beautiful thing to be a deeply caring human being!
B.C. Place Stadium, Vancouver, B.C., June 25, 1994. 65,000 people all singing this song together. Never heard anything like it. An experience I'll never forget.
This song makes me think of the brothers I lost in combat around the world. There were quite a few in my years serving in the US Navy. Every time I hear this song I think of them. Rest In Peace brothers I will be joining you someday.
Shine on You Crazy Diamond from GIlmour Live at Royal Albert Hall 2006, concert called Remember That Night. Features David Crosby and Graham Nash on back up vocals, and is a different but gorgeous arrangement. You won’t be sorry. I promise.
I was a teenager back in the early 70's. The first time I heard PF was DSOTM. It blew me away! I couldn't wait for their next album. It was WYWH, another masterpiece. I still listen to them every day.
Saw them in 1977 in Cleveland with 83,000 of my closest friends high on acid. We got their by car and a van with a couch and chairs hours and hours before the concert and were the only vehicles in the parking lot. We took the furniture out put them on a Persian rug just like a living room. We were playing frisbee, drinking beer and smoking pot and having a great time. It totally freaked everyone that came in the parking lot after us. Everyone said the same thing to us "You guys got the hot setup!" Before that, there was no such thing as "tailgating." We invented tailgating, man!
@@abdelkrim4 not disagreeing, but they are less likely to enjoy it as much because they will be watching an old man. Pink Floyd in their prime live at Pompeii will blow their minds more.
I once had a boyfriend who chastised me because I always cried when I heard this song. I constantly thank the moon & stars that we broke up. Imagine living with THAT kind of negative energy for the rest of my life. George, I fully empathize with you. Your feelings are true.
The crowd was cheering so much from the song before you couldn't here the intro guitar. It was only when the guitar on stage struck up was it realised this song had started, hence the sudden loud cheer. What a concert - the closest I've come to a religious experience ✌
To me (IMOHO), this was written/foreshadowed about today: Did they get you to trade Your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? Did you exchange A walk-on part in the war For a leading role in a cage?
First time I saw them live was in 1969. I was 21 years old... This concert was their final tour. When they brought this concert to the San Francisco Bay Area I waited in line for 3 days to get tickets. They played 3 nights at the Oakland Coliseum and I was there each night. On the 3rd night a low cloud cover was blowing through and when the lasers were pointed up they'ed light up the moving clouds for a whole new light show experience. (yes, we'd smoked a dubee before hand) You really should get the DVD of this concert and watch it all the way through. I have numerous times. It's epic.
David Gilmore in one word "Precision". His song writing, singing, and guitar playing are spot on. Every note is so clear and clean, songs are patient, never in a hurry. Intros that go on for 5 minutes before a word is spoken and it doesn't seem long or drawn out. Like Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, Pink Floyd's music has a one of a kind iconic sound.
You're right. This song is for Syd Barret. David missed him a lot, they were best friend😢💔. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is the other song for Syd...the Crazy Diamond who shine it's him😌
They wrote this song for Syd. This is a song of “absence “. You are present here but you really are not here. It’s about friendship. It’s about love. It’s about what you imagine it to be
The opening where you smile. That’s a universal feeling. Loved seeing this on your face. It’s on mine as well. What a great channel. I am happy I found you.

I just discovered your channel last night and stayed up all night watching. I was excited to see you wearing a Michigan State shirt because I am from Michigan although I didn’t go there my lil bro did. I went to college in Detroit. Anyways wearing my hometown jersey and discussing one of my atf songs was stellar! Thank you! Your enthusiasm for the music I grew up with is infectious!
Such a beautiful song. Every time I hear it, I think of my husband. He passed away in 2018 from cancer. I wish he were here. Thanks for all your great videos. I love them all.
I did chemo with this girl who became my best friend for four years. I wish she was here still. 37 years old and fought like a tiger but in the end it got her. Kills me.
My brother & I used to do exactly what you're doing, but with cassette tape & then cd's, he'd hear something I didn't or I'd hear something he didn't & we'd back it up & point it out, so many genres, so many times, one night he was walking home from his girls house & was hit & killed by a car, that was more than 20yrs ago but feel his loss every day, y'all are so nostalgic for me, ya make me smile & at times cry, never take a breath for granted & never let those who walk with you In this life have a moment of doubt as to how much you love them, he was a bass player so ~ Metallica, anesthesia S&M2~ if you could please, for Josh
Nice reaction. Agreed on the emotion of the song, lyrics are the mirror of truth. If you get chills listening to their live on UA-cam, I can tell you seeing them live...the chills are indescribable, saw them in the late 80’s in an open air stadium on a still hot summer night, passed right through you, quite an experience.👍
I think live at Gdansk is a record that should be on your play list. Meadows is one whole side of Meddle. That was the last time Richard Wright played it. The record came out a couple of weeks before he died. David Gilmore says he will never play it again. Rock on Brothers.
