Wow, the ray fleck on those boards is incredible!
From the tree to the furniture in fifteen minutes. A great video.
Making use of some "oh yeah, these are almost firewood" boards and getting this result is most of the fun. I approve of being very miserly with your boards.👍
Glad to see you’re back in the shop, the bench looks great.
I love the way the grain really comes up with the finish. The bench looks great with that finish. As always, good job, Matt.
I like the way you "know yourself". This is a hard lesson to learn and, in the end, makes life more enjoyable. Great video.
What beautiful grain on those new slats, the ray fleck is gorgeous and the way they popped when you added the finish is amazing.
Nice pallet cleanser.... Nice job, have the kids help you count next time... 😉
Nice to see the old home once again but your new abode sure fits you and your family much better. Good job on the bench, looks inviting 👍
Ahh, the unmistakable scream of a board getting resawn. My kind of ASMR.
Really great to see projects going on again now that the move stuff is over - great little “quick” project there!
👍 more of the rough sawn cutting and prep videos please !
Glad to see you back with some smaller projects. I like this type of video as opposed to the Shop Lives on Fridays. Thanks again for showing how to make/do things. Have a great day!
Hi Matt. Sei un A. A. (artista artigiano) nel vero senso della parola. I tuoi lavori mi affascinano. Complimenti!! ... Ti seguo sempre. Saluti dalla Patria dei tuoi antenati.
Gooood morning from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great day! Wonderful project!
It's nice to get a win under the belt to ready yourself for the next hurdle.
Love those quick and easy projects. The bench came out real nice and it is always amazing that an ugly rotten log produces such beautiful lumber. Glad to see you in the shop again.
Thanks!
White oak is the "cat's pajamas" for exterior use....tough stuff too... I lived north of you a bit for 60 years... Rapid City now!... :-)
Recycling at it's finest!
looks great.please show how the finish holds up after the winter
Oh look its baby matt
I have watched your channel for a long time. I liked your saving logs that would be loss otherwise. Your short repair of the bench was a quick example of what I enjoy about your channel. Keep up the great work. Blessings to you.
I love beautiful wood benches such a nice place to sit
Matthew I remember that old rotten ugly log you cut up did not think you still had it timber came up looking great and at least something nice came out of the log 😀👍
Great job Matt, the garden/yard bench turned out beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us, Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋👋👍👍
Nice work! Now Lindsay is still waiting for you to build her a new wagon wheel!
I recognise that bench! I restored my Mum's one here in NZ! Same rotting slats, too. Thanks for surprising me, Matt.
Looks super nice Matt! Good thing it’ll hold up for everyone sitting on it 😉😂
That's why I found, you don't play around, with the Funky Old Patina.
Looks absolutely stunning in the natural light outside.
That old rotten log sure did produce some beautiful slats !
Wow. Beautiful wooden slats--the bench really came out nice.
Funny you are working on that, I have the exact same style bench that I got way back, got the metal powder coated but been waiting to find some good wood to use for it👍👍👍.
A perfect palate cleanser project! And gorgeous to boot. Thanks Matt.
thanks Trish!
Beautiful transformation!! You did a gorgeous job! 😍😍🙌🙌
Thank you so much!!
Nice improvement, and I like the decisions to go with the QS oak as well as the old hardware. Fun project!
Great project!! Short and sweet.
Incredible grain pattern, bench looks great
Looks good. I just completed doing two of those benches a few weeks ago myself. I didn't use any finish on them but the last ones did last for over 8 years without any. I might try the oil on mine as they have been under cover during the heavy rains we have had.
Great video. Love that you use wood that would otherwise be 'scrap'. One thing I would change, add more diesel tank.
Beautiful! I need a small project too. You have inspired me!
That is a great refurbishing of the bench, Matthew.
That is now the nicest one of those garden benches I have ever seen.
Great video Matt. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.
Love that quartersawn white oak! Great idea on oil finishes…I use marine poly and it is a pain to redo.
I can tell you just love timber which I can associate with. Best regards.
Well done Matt, thank you
Never thought of using a circle jig like that.... nice a slick! only your missing is the pin for stability, but not 100 percent necessary. Great project. I found on of those in the trash. Did them with cheapest of the cheap lumber. Worked out and I had it on a covered porch on my home for a long time. Sold it when we moved (didn't want to cart it). Which I could find another one to redo. It reminds of a friend who has past. We would go ride dirt bikes and leave at 5 am in the summer. I would look out and he would be at my door at 4:45.... relaxing on that bench enjoying the usually nice and cool morning to knock at 5 on the dot! Old school postman.
its really have a Tiger look after the painting, Lovely , Will see ;)
I can relate to burn out on a project. I take a break and work on my Vintage VWs THANKS Dan H
Excellent save of the rotting log. Good wood out of it and excellent usage! Thanks Matt!
thanks!
Hey Matt how you doing, I really am a big fan oh white oak It's what really caught my attention to hardwood's Develop to working with hard woods.😁✌🏿🖖🏿👊🏿👌🏿🤜🏿🤛🏿👊🏿
You are really have the skill to do it well sir . i enjoy to watch those videos and i want try to do it at my home.
Fun! Good job Matt.
we had one that was falling apart too. Last year I made new slats for it out of maple. A little stain and done. Still looks good. Peaceout
I did almost identical slats for a Japanese style garden bench (see the design in FWW), using similar oak a couple of years back. We used a tung oil finish, hoping to bring out the quarter sawn fleck, and it looked great for about a week. Within 18 months it looked quite unattractive, with some tannins reacting in the wood to create black spots and the tung oil finish starting to look yellow and quite patchy (and it took forever to dry) After I'd scraped it off to get rid of the worst patchiness, the oak weathered to a silvery grey anyway, which was much nicer than the finish ever had been. My conclusion was that for my taste, oak is better left unfinished if it is for the garden/ yard. I should say, this is in Scotland and obviously we get a lot of weather here.
i’ve had one of these on the gonnado list for quite a while bit more complex in that i’ve got to remove a fair bit of rust from the castings and then the decision on which timber to use. The ray fleck came out nice i think i have some Aussie red gum sleepers in the stash i can resaw. Hmmm i’m reinspired thanks Matt cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Gorgeous Love the rayflex
Matt, Nice little diversion but still woodworking AND something useful for the house! When you said 12 pieces out of those two boards, I thought he will have to cut the slats so thing even the kids could break through when they stood and played on it (you know they will)! Glad it worked out!
thanks Mac!
Wow that bench looks exactly like a pair of benches my mom bought in the mid 80s. I restored them for her a few years ago. Many of the bolts were rusted and broken but the wood was surprisingly ok, just a little rough and weather worn. I think she said it was teak. A bit of sanding and staining and some new stainless steel hardware and they looked brand new.
That TotalBoat Teak looks awesome on that quarter sawn oak.
Beautiful work!
I know you like figure, but I sure like quartersawn white oak. I had a whole house floored with QSWO (except the kitchen where my wife wanted pecan for some reason). All hand-scraped from the rough (never planed or sanded), so the rayflecks really popped and could be felt underfoot. This (scraping from the roughsawn) is a technique I haven't noticed on your channel. It really adds texture to QSWO (which as you often say, can be pretty plain. The rays, being slightly harder, stand a little proud of the rest of the board.
Looks great, love it!
Would have loved to see you leave some of the natural undulations in the live edges and toss them on the ends.
wow! i realy loved this project
Correct me if I’m wrong but white oak has a much less tendency to absorb water through the end grain than red oak or other woods. That’s one reason it’s used in wooden boat building. It’s a great selection for the outdoor bench. Also that finish is fantastic.
That’s correct. Thanks!
MY go to is TUNG and TEAK OILS I like them both esp. outside.
I like the way you explain your logic with regard to the finish. Honestly, as fast as you whipped out those slats, you could probably cut new ones faster than messing with refinishing. Nice quick video Matt. CHEERS! P.S. The cast iron on that bench makes me hope you do get a dedicated metal/blacksmithing area or shop. With your work ethic and creativity, I think it could bring your products to a whole new level!
I second your statement!
thanks for sharing your video
I'm sure the original was cheap pine, and now that beautiful white oak pops. Great work as usual even on something so simple.
Looks really nice!
Thanks!
Great project. I wish total boat would become available in south africa.
Looks really good Matt. There's always some good wood in about every piece. You just have to mine it.
Bill
Ha! I have the same project, with the same slat broken in the same place - how spooky!
Hermosa le quedó 👍🏻
nice restore project
Thanks. Look nice,
Yeh, quick jobs are always good for satisfaction. Especially from a log a lot of people would have scrapped
Beautiful
Crazy as this may sound Matt, but I have almost the exact same bench with exactly the same issues. I have not got around to re-slatting? it yet but now I will. The wife thanks you btw. LOL
Put on your calendar to follow up with bench in a year.
I'd painted metal work Matt, for what it's worth, have a nice day !!!.
Got the same style bench-that front slat always goes first.
Matt’s junky throw away is nicer than the nicest boards I buy. 😢
thanks
Parabéns pelo seu trabalho 👍👏🤝👊🇧🇷💯
,,,good one, nice job, stay safe...............
I'm new to woodworking, starting about six months ago with some utensil making and moving from there to simple cutting boards. I recently watched your video from some years ago about making cutting boards out of leftover scraps. A week ago I salvaged a piece of white oak from a pallet. However, it's clearly pith wood and has cracks around the very center. Do you feel wood like this has any use in an end-grain cutting board? Or, are there other ways to get something out of pith?
Really, really enjoying your channel and feel like I'm learning all kinds of things. Thanks so much!
Yep, very true, sometimes you need a slam-it-out-in-a-day project to relieve the intensity of working on something meticulous.
I enjoyed the video but I have one thought / question about the teak oil application. Would it have been better to soak the ends after drilling the holes? That way the oil would protect the newly exposed portion of the wood inside the drilled holes.
Is it possible to add a tint/stain to teak oil?
Great project matt. With exterior timber, have you heard of a product by Osmo? It's a UV protection product that prevents the greying of timber
Great stuff Matt! Looks terrific. Love what you found to use in those skimpy boards. Question: What are your thoughts on Australian Timber Oil? This stuff looked awfully similar.
For some reason I’m getting your happy hour but not your weekly video. Went to your home page and an catching up. Last one I saw was you pulling posts out.
Looks great, Matt! Easy wins are the best motivator!
heck yes!!
*NICE!*
Love the wood. Good rotten stuff
I can see how doing a project as involved and fussy as the chest would make you want a small break. That bench turned out terrific .
thanks!
Great video was wondering what size in shop bandsaw you have ?
14”; thanks!
