this snap upgrade is really has surprised me, quite rare thing when blender devs modified some tool like in popular addon. but i like it, good for newcomers.
Yeah, finding work arounds for the snapping thing was a big hurdle when i was a young blender user
For sure. And as you say especially for those new to the software it makes things SO much easier than the previous faff of having to hope it snapped correctly or using the 3D cursor to move things around.
Less than a minute in and the alt movement is a game changer!
So much so! I wish it was there all along but so glad it's there now! Blender 4 is looking amazing!
@@ArtisansofVaul absolutely! I use it a lot to assemble digital parts (and make the odd missing part or gap fill) so things like this are such a big upgrade for me as currently snapping is a pain and rarely goes where I want unless I move all the vertexes in edit mode
It's also nice because you now can rotate and scale by point! So first you set the base point with the 3d cursor to a vertex let's say and then press scale and then B and select the other point. Same with rotote! It's a game changer. I can't remember how it used to be before this. This is so useful
Oh damn, I didn't realise you could use it for those tools as well! Thanks so much!
These are great additions to the UI ΛₒV! A lot of other 3D and cad software has these options built in. I am glad to see blender foundation adding more ways to navigate the UI.
Totally agree. Very happy it's now included.

I have been waiting for that snap tool for a while...
You're not alone 😉
the quicksnap addon allows orbiting and panning while moving without pressing alt or shift button
Oh, good point. I'm not sure why I tried alt 😅👍🏻
Nice! No more being married to the 3D cursor 😂
Exactly!
Nice! Now I'm curious what the "center of face" is on really complex faces. Can you snap to the "middle" of a face in the shape of a "C"?
yes you can snap to N-gons, if we are talking about shape "C" - the snap point will be slightly to the left from the center (because we have an empty on right side)
@@hupchik Cool. Thanks!
🤣 I mean I'm not sure how helpful it will be but it will probably be based on the centre of the volume of the face or where the vertices are. It has odd calculations to work it out.
@@ArtisansofVaul So like the "center" (as in "origin to geometry") of a complex mesh with holes and concavities. Cool. Thanks! I just wondered if it was going to insist on snapping to actual face or whether it might leave the vert floating in space.
Can I rotate view or move now while using knife tool?
Oh... I didn't try that. I'm going to guess it's only the movement tools at this point but damn that would be handy! I'll be trying that out the second I get home!
@@ArtisansofVaul I'm really missing this feature from other 3d softwares
I hope this is a sign of things to come. Blender is a pig for anyone who needs CAD like accuracy and the plugins are compromised, other software like C4D has always been better at snapping and accuracy.
Agreed though I do like a lot of the add ons personally.
New movement keys: G + B
🏆Wonderful! It was a feature I got used to in Sketchup.
Off topic: It would be great if we could also do the specific rotation in this video, from 120. second. ua-cam.com/video/qiv3IGL-Idw/v-deo.html
Agreed. This isn't too hard as you can place the origin there (or cursor) to do it but it would help if it was a bit more intuitive.
Blender 4.0. I press B and a dashed cross appears, instead of the snap square. Any help?
You need to hit G first to start the move before B.
Thanks! @@ArtisansofVaul
Regarding using Alt while snapping to be able to orbit, I have enabled "Emulate 3 Button Mouse", so this doesn't work on my end (but that's ok, it's a trad-off I'm more than willing to make as I really don't like Blender's native inputs). I can't wait for this to launch officially next month! Blender 4 seems to have quite a few new improvements what will make the quality of life that much better!
Yeah, I'm so hyped for Blender 4, it's got so much to it. It's a huge jump forwards in my opinion.
consider investing in a 3 button mouse
they support some unique software such as every single one made since the invention of the 3 button mouse!
@@MudraptorGaming I do have a 3 button mouse. I just don't like the idea of holding down the middle mouse button for orbiting, zooming and panning. I would much rather hold down the Alt key for this instead. At least we have options for different navigational methods.
id love to see the option for snapping one of the rectangular sides of a cylinder to a face (not the circular ends) i can get snapping to work with all the other primitives, but cylinders only seem to want to snap end over end.
I'll have a look at that. I can't say I remember trying it to see if there is an issue. 👍🏻
