This is one of the best LTT videos I have ever seen. I own a Game Gear myself and it stopped working a few years ago, but before it died, I had to angle the Game Gear so that it was flat so I could see what the hell I was doing, and the speaker wasn't working so well anymore. I could never tackle a mod like this, especially not on my own, so I'll just be glad instead that this project and video both happened successfully. AWESOME stuff.
This was one of the coolest videos I've seen from LTT in years. I absolutely love these modding adventure type videos. Dan is amazing and I'm so glad YT suggested this to me after having not seen an LTT video in ages.
Dan feels like that one smart classmate that does everything for the project and Linus and David are his groupmates that are doing the presentation for their group.
The general chaos, the unpreparedness, the constant host switching, introducing a new host midway through, the twist at the end, the whole thing was just downright entertaining
The "Gamebit", ie a Line screw, had reasonably common usage in Japan for 80's/90's computing, so it's not really that bad in its original own context. Like an alternative to Torx, they at least work well as screws and aren't likely to be damaged unless you're using the wrong tools. Unlike, say, smaller tripoint screws where even the right tool may start stripping them.
Heck yeah. Good job Dan, immediately cemented yourself as a member of the team for us, the audience. solid first video. I have to say you have some lines you deliver really dang well. "Oh that's what those screws are for." perfect delivery with the orange wire as well. "oh good god. ok." generally though, great video! Loved david's performance. definitely a hot thing in this video ;)
That is so cool that they ended up finding a super early version of the gamegear. Seeing the painstaking work of someone having to manually solder the earlier production versions is really cool.
19:42 Dan's first words Dan to Linus "Do you mind if I have a look to see what you did?" Linus "No no, I'm good. Dan "Uh oh." Later, 20:50 Dan to Linus "... And in case you screw up even more, we have this solder mask." Linus crying 21:53 22:04 Dan "It'll probably explode" 22:39 Dan to Linus "Yeah, you really screwed that up." 24:51 Linus, you hire great people, Dan is already a legend and fits right in.
i really like the ps vita's internal design, personally. the screws are colour coded and it's all modular. super nice for repairability and modding. i hate the shoulder buttons though.
Modding retro systems is almost as much fun as playing them. Y'all should do more of these. I want to watch Linus mess up like a dozen N64s trying to do an N64Digital install ;) While he does that have Dennis do a GCLoader install.
Dan is amazing the way he explains with dry sarcasm WITHOUT being condescending is fantastic. He is channeling some of Luke too and the way he vibes with everyone is just great.
As an experienced console modder this was horrifying to watch, but you all learned and finished with the game gear! As linus was mentioning it uses a CCFL tube backlight, which requires pretty high voltage to work. I have accidently touched it while it was on, and let me tell you it was horrible. Hopefully you all can fix the two other game gears or can send it to someone that can Keep up the great work!
If you ever need to do bodge wires inside a small case like that again, see if you've got any IDE ribbons lying around. You can peel the wires apart pretty easily, and they're basically the thinnest wires you can solder by hand. They're so thin you don't even need to strip the ends, because the insulation will peel back enough just from the heat of soldering.
I always use old ethernet cables (the individual wires, not as a whole). IDE ribbons seem to have quite thick isolation?!? A big plus of ethernet cables is that you have a bunch of colors ;-)
@@cornholio1988 IDE insulation is thicker than Ethernet insulation, but it melts/shrinks really easily. It's also convenient in that you're probably not doing anything else with it these days. That said, LTT does probably have a lot more spare Ethernet cable lying around, and the colors can be nice depending what you're doing; not sure how much it matters for bodge wires in a one-off, but very nice if you're doing a small run where you want to keep track of which modifications you're doing on each device. (Which is why, ironically, I would use IDE in Linus's case, but Ben Heckendorn, who gave me the idea in the first place, should probably be using Ethernet wires.)
After the sketchyness of that shunt mod, I'm happy that they 1 have a rework station, and 2 seem to have someone who can do microsoldering. Dan is great I hope I get to see him more in the future.
I have done so many handheld mods over the years. This really takes me back to restoring broken game boys and N64s. IPS screens and backlights on old handhelds really give them new life

Dan has the perfect IT guy humor/wit. He's like a walking IT meme. Short, dry, sarcastic. Would love to see more of the Dan. "I'm gonna lose my job."around 21:10 killed me.
I really hope he is in a video where he gets to sincerely say “have you tried shutting it down and turning it back on again?” That would cement him as one of the best at LTT Media Group.
it really does a number on you, I managed a computer repair/custom build shop for around 8 years and that dry sarcastic tone comes from explaining to customers for the 10th time "oh what do you mean it there was dried baby formula inside my laptop????? I don't know how that could have got there." and having to fake a nice pleasent tone while you know they're straight up lying to you. lmao tends to send you in the opposite direction dealing with everything else.
@@ExarchGaming That sounds disgusting.
@@3xceIIent far from the worst i've seen, a heavy pack a day smoker the inside of their computers are the most disgusting smelliest thing you've ever could imagine. it will make you gag.
It's like the nicotine bonds to the dust and creates this....alien film like substance like a hairy slime.
But you get to be dry and sarcastic just by nature I feel like working in IT. There is just so much bullshit some days lol.
Gotta say, I'm Dan's fan already. He's great
This was one of the coolest videos I've seen from LTT in years. I absolutely love these modding adventure type videos. Dan is amazing and I'm so glad YT suggested this to me after having not seen an LTT video in ages.
Linus' reaction to getting the GameGear carrying bag was freaking adorable, please more console mod videos this was a lot of fun
I agree. This was fun
Dan feels like that one smart classmate that does everything for the project and Linus and David are his groupmates that are doing the presentation for their group.
One of the best episodes I've seen in a while I love how in depth it was I love the history we discovered I love Dan its just been an awesome episode

@@chevelle427770 quick tech tip, when you agree with a comment, just hit like. You dont need to reply with a "this" or similar.
The general chaos, the unpreparedness, the constant host switching, introducing a new host midway through, the twist at the end, the whole thing was just downright entertaining
wrod
David’s happiness for getting it to work was both such a joy and also so relatable
That is so cool that they ended up finding a super early version of the gamegear. Seeing the painstaking work of someone having to manually solder the earlier production versions is really cool.
I really like Dan, love his dry sarcastic humor lol
I would watch a whole series of David, Dan and Adam upgrading old tech, I love the chaos they all caused, one of my favourite LTT videos in a while...
Omg yes Linus read this comment!
Dan first appearance, feels like hes been with LTT the whole time
19:42 Dan's first words
Dan to Linus "Do you mind if I have a look to see what you did?"
Linus "No no, I'm good.
Dan "Uh oh."
Later, 20:50
Dan to Linus "... And in case you screw up even more, we have this solder mask."
Linus crying 21:53
22:04 Dan "It'll probably explode"
22:39 Dan to Linus "Yeah, you really screwed that up."
24:51
Linus, you hire great people, Dan is already a legend and fits right in.
Dude this is the Dan guide
i really like the ps vita's internal design, personally. the screws are colour coded and it's all modular. super nice for repairability and modding. i hate the shoulder buttons though.
This has to be one of the most entertaining videos from LMG. The on screen chemistry is so great
can we just acknowledge Dan's lighting reactions with an awesome comment at 21:20
Dan is amazing. We all need a Dan in our lives who can quietly and expertly deal with any issue
I’ve probably done over 20 of these screen replacements it’s a fantastic mod but you guys should definitely look at the SYF complete board replacement
16:00 most likely a grounding tab for ps vita goes through the pcb and one of the screw holding the pcb.
I laughed several times at this. David is hilarious and needs to be infront of the camera more, including Dan and Daniel! Need more DDDL content
Modding retro systems is almost as much fun as playing them. Y'all should do more of these. I want to watch Linus mess up like a dozen N64s trying to do an N64Digital install ;) While he does that have Dennis do a GCLoader install.
bruh you wanna torture him? XD
.........id watch that. o-o
Should let Linus do the GC Loader. It's the easiest thing in the world to install, and I imagine he'd screw it up, somehow.
@@TooBokoo That is why I said Dennis but nobody can help him. Like not even to point him at the right screw driver bits ;)
Dan is amazing the way he explains with dry sarcasm WITHOUT being condescending is fantastic. He is channeling some of Luke too and the way he vibes with everyone is just great.
Dan should be in more videos, he seems really cool
Dan brought the brains, david brought the humour and linus bought his best. I want to see more of these 3
As an experienced console modder this was horrifying to watch, but you all learned and finished with the game gear!
As linus was mentioning it uses a CCFL tube backlight, which requires pretty high voltage to work. I have accidently touched it while it was on, and let me tell you it was horrible.
Hopefully you all can fix the two other game gears or can send it to someone that can
Keep up the great work!
yeah it was really cringe i wanted to be really critical but this really isnt something linus or any of his guys are really experienced with.
Loving Dan, another top pick by LMG! And the inner child in Linus must be absolutely beaming after this project!
This was such a dope video. Loved the dynamic between Dan, Daniel, David & Linus. Y'all need to do more videos together!
(Which is why, ironically, I would use IDE in Linus's case, but Ben Heckendorn, who gave me the idea in the first place, should probably be using Ethernet wires.)
dan is so awesome, 10/10 would listen to him do literally anything "oh good god."
Linus: "Alright, I want the Dan review"
Dan:"I'm gonna lose my job"
This was amazing! I love all the different energies going here. More vids with David and Dan. Welcome Dan!
Dan is incredible!! the level of precision and patience OMG great work.
IPS screens and backlights on old handhelds really give them new life
Dan's a wizard, I wish I could work with him 'cause I feel like I could learn a lot
Totally down for more videos like this. Great cast of characters and seeing old consoles given new life is a hoot especially seeing Linus react to it. Iv seen plenty of other videos of people replacing screens etc but the goofiness and charisma everyone has here is so fun to watch.
