DJI AVATA - RockSteady vs HorizonSteady - When to use which
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лип 2024
- If you own the DJI AVATA, you might have seen the different EIS or electronic image stabilization options of HorizonSteady, RockSteady or completely off (no electronic image stabilization). There are tradeoffs to each of these options, but they all have their place. In this video we cover how to change between HorizonSteady, RockSteady and no stabilization. We also show you examples of how each looks in different flight situations (indoors, outdoors, etc.) and when it makes sense to use each one.
00:00 - Introduction
00:14 - How to switch between RockSteady and HorizonSteady
00:46 - Indoor flight in RockSteady
01:51 - Indoor flight in HorizonSteady
03:21 - Examples of when to use HorizonSteady
03:56 - Examples of when NOT to use HorizonSteady
04:45 - Example of when to use RockSteady
05:28 - How electronic image stabilization works
05:56 - How much does each mode crop the image
06:31 - Summary of when to use RockSteady vs HorizonSteady

I never knew the difference between HorizonSteady and RockSteady stabilization. Thanks for explaining it so well, and show us examples of each. The Avata has some nice features. Great video Kelly, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ron!!!
Ah!!! [Ready Set Drone], I also have Avatar 1, and through this video, I first learned how to set EIS > HorizonSteady in Settings > Camera. I've always worried a lot about how much shaking there is when flying at low speeds, and thanks to you today, I was able to learn a lot. In particular, I think the video shot while flying inside the cafe was the best, and I also really appreciated the various example videos about turning off EIS, RockSteady mode, and HorizonSteady mode.
Thx, Kelly, for the explanation of the two modes; i learned a lot from this comparison.
Thanks man, I was looking for this exact tutorial, love your honest landings 😅
Fantastic video my friend! Thanks.
New to the Avata...will try both way to see what I like best outdoors for adding to my camera drone cinematic footage... Bought the Avata for the added speed footage. Now 'm just having fun with it. Thanks for sharing
Thanx for the info! For a new pilot who doesn't know the difference between both modes its very helpfull 😅👊✌️
Totally agree with you Kelly. Great comparison!! 😊
Yay, thank you!
You're the best! THANKS, MAN!! Cheers from italy❤️❤️💚
I'm a HorizonSteady kinda guy! Nice explanation!!! 👍👍👍
Great explanation, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
awesome video dude
Very helpful!
Thanks for the explication.
Good to know for my Avata 2.
From France 🇨🇵
Very well explained. Thanks
You are welcome!
excellent video!
Thank you very much!
Good video buddy. I agree.
Right on
Can you set the camera to ultra wide and use horizon steady? Or does it have to be set at wide
Nice 👍🏻
Thanks ✌️
Thank you
#Lazercheek .. I've wanted to add the Avata to my fleet for awhile now but wanted to see if DJI was going to continue support of the air units first, especially with the other options now on the market. with the announcement of the 03 unit I feel comfortable to continue my long time relationship with Dji and will be getting the Avata soon. great video and info as usual Kelly!
Thank you. It is a solid cinewhoop, but is not great at freestyle FPV flight.
Danke!
Great video. Only other thing I would have liked to have seen was RockSteady vs off. I flew the other day testing all 3 modes and did not notice a big difference between the two. I have also heard about people using GyroFlow(?) software instead of the built in stabilization so including that would be an even more thorough test and comparison.
Thanks for your input. We've used Gyroflow in the past, and it is awesome to have that flexibility, after recording, for sure.
We might do an updated video with the Avata 2 and take your suggestions into account.
Great info
I prefer horizon steady
Fair enough!
Just now getting around to watching this one. #lazercheek. I prefer the horizon steady for the non-fpv crowd, like most paying clients. Yes, the FPV view is fun to watch, but doing a fly thru for a client? They want the steady footage.
Great stuff, thanks! For indoor real estate shooting, would you choose Horizon Steady or no internal stabilization and then run through GyroFlow?
Horizon Steady has worked fine for me. I'm not sure of any compelling advantages to using Gyroflow for indoor shots with the Avata.
@@readysetdrone Thanks. Just found your channel. Your video was shot in Austin, so I’m guessing that’s where you are. I’m in Leander and shoot real estate all over Austin.
April 24 2023. Just watched. buying a Avata soon. My question is with rock steady do you actually see the smoothness while flying or is it just recorded on the final video?
You don’t see it in the goggles-only the final video
Hi, I know this in not a tinny woop video, but what do you recomend for a very good beginner woop, and one you can progress with.
what are some of your favorite woops?
any can comment on #2
Both GEPRC and EMAX have great RTF kits. I’ve flown both and you really can’t go wrong with either.
Interesting to know about the cropping and quality loss estimate.
3:15 #AvataBump lol
I had a feeling that laser moment would make it into the edit. Haha
Boom!

Hi there, did drone record files with smaller resolution when stabilization is ON?
Yes and no. The reason I say that is because the resulting file, when recording in 4k, is still 4k, even when Horizon Steady is enabled. However, it's cropping in on the sensor, therefore reducing the effective resolution. You can definitely notice that the quality is lacking, but it's still usable.
@@readysetdrone thank you
My question is and mind you I have little fpv experience but lots of normal camera drone experience. I have an Avata 2 and if you want to fly indoors and capture footage but physically see the drone line of sight and know what you're capturing is this possible? For example wearing the goggles and backing out of a space with no obstacle avoidance doesn't seem wise. I rather watch the drone and fly it that way what do u suggest? Thanks!
You can plug in your phone, or have the goggles wirelessly transmit the video feed to your phone. That should allow you to see the drone in real life as well as take a peak at the camera view.
Another option is to enable the PiP mode (picture in picture. Then you can have the drone's camera view in the left quadrant and then you can see through the goggles cameras and look at your drone.
@@readysetdrone I kind of wish it had obstacle avoidance just for certain scenarios flying indoors or even outside if you just became nervous somewhere 🫣
Agreed! We thought it might have obstacle avoidance in the rear, but after crashing into ourselves, gently, we found that it doesn't. ua-cam.com/video/Ve4PazbraFU/v-deo.htmlsi=zQXCxszprZS30U8d&t=947
nice video thank you! do you have to stabilize footage after when using rocksteady or horizon or does this do it automatically please?
It's all automatic, which is convenient, but also not the most flexible, because if you accidentally leave Horizon Steady turned on when you wanted to have Rock Steady turned on, there's no going back. Don't ask how I found that out! 😄
@@readysetdrone ahh ok thank you so much for taking the time to reply!! :)
Absolutely! Thanks for watching.
How does this compare to FPV on the Mini3Pro?
I recently made a video comparing the Mini 3 Pro and the Avata. See if that helps ua-cam.com/video/8lZtaDdTRRg/v-deo.html
Can you fly backward with any of these mode ?
These modes are camera settings. You can fly backwards with the DJI Avata if you use the FPV controller 2 or the Motion Controller 2. The Motion Controller 1 does not allow backwards flight.
How do you do the flip?
You'll need two things: the DJI FPV controller 2, and also "manual mode" enabled.
This video (tip #3) shows how to enable manual mode. ua-cam.com/video/OqllPRr5PoM/v-deo.htmlsi=JnydRVdbnENVFv6n
This is only possible with that controller -- not the motion controller.
Does horizon steady only work if the SD card is in the drone only?
Hey Trey. That sounds crazy, if it's true! I haven't heard anything like that before. We generally fly and record to the SD card, but sometimes, if we forget a card, we record to the drone's internal storage, but usually we use rocksteady. We can look into it if you'd like.
Yesterday I put the SD card in the drone and the horizontal stable worked amazingly... Thanks for the response. I would have thought horizontal steady would still work with SD card in Goggles lol. If you could duplicate what I found out on your avata that would make a good video because I couldn't find a video anywhere about the SD card had to be in the drone for horizontal steady and rock steady to work.
#lazercheek looks awesome!
Thanks for watching, Reese! We will add your name to the drawing during our live stream this Friday at 7pm CT.
#lazercheek. Avata looks like you can’t go wrong with it.

👋Chris
I've never used either
Oh Jeff! That needs to change ASAP! 🤣
@@SunriseWaterMedia 🤣
Gyroflow is just better option than both i think.
It's improved a lot over the past year. I think you're right.
I just want to be steady as a rock when I fly...But alas I sit anyway...
Agreed! I like to sit as well.
you said it well in under 2.minutes, then it repeats....
Ha! Thanks!
