@@justinluttrell1769 The benefit to building a larger displacement engine like this is the fact that it can be built much more mildy, cost less on regular maintenance items, provide less strain at the same given power level and make that power earlier in the rpms. Lots of benefits for a car that sees street use.

Disclaimer: Chevy guy commenting in a Ford house.
Let me start by saying that I'm glad Ford is making a big pushrod engine and it's a proper one at that. It's gonna be great for guys that don't want to LS swap their Mustang (even I think that's lame) or other Ford project.
But I didn't see any pricing (even preliminary numbers) for a crate motor...does anyone have those numbers without an NDA?
    (Chevy mode engaged)
You can pickup a 441ci LS short block for around $6K and dress it out for another $3K. In the end, you're looking at the same power or more in a smaller package, that is lighter, and has 20yrs OEM and aftermarket development.
    (Chevy mode off)
The LS motors were really expensive when new and I doubt a stock 7.3 Godzilla long block or crate engine is going to be under $10K for at least a few years.
Don't get me wrong...is big, it make serious power, it's not DOHC, it's a Ford and I think it's great.

Finally nice to hear a Chevy guy be polite and nice about a ford..It does get old see the same old comment just Ls swapp it..Being a ford guy myself I would rather build up a 351w from day one..I will admit that the Ls does like you said they make good horsepower out of a relatively small package.Ford definitely has the cylinder head advantage with the 5.0 Coyote.I seen where someone explained that if the coyote was a same cubic inches as the 6.2 ls it would have roughly around 510 horsepower which is impressive.I am glad that ford finally came with the 7.3 Godzilla because I agree with the points you made well said dr.rockso !!!

JMC RJC we're not all assholes and the truth is that I'll hotrod anything with an engine. I just finished helping a friend build a 331 (all forged bottom end, AFR 185cc heads, CompCams NX274) for his '65 Mustang he restored in high school...i spec'd the parts and it's way hotter than we expected.
I cannot deny the Coyote's superior head flow numbers...but it's not like they had to make sacrifices to deal with pesky pushrods.
Ford has done incredible things with the (D)OHC layout...i only see two issues limiting thier popularity. First they're "more complicated" because they have more moving parts, but that's a dubious argument these days; more importantly they're just so wide that it can be hard to swap them into many cars.
Keep your foot on the loud peddle buddy.

dr.rockzo ford performance is now selling “coyote power modules” for around $10-$15k depending on if you want auto or manual and it will start up and run on the pallet they send it to you on. Everything you need for a swap. Pay an extra $500 for oil pump gears and a crank sprocket, maybe some ARP head studs and you’re ready for 1k hp. What exactly is the 441 and what are the power capabilities? Never seen that displacement. Considering this 7.3 is 445 ci.

Granted it's not a production engine and is pretty much designed for road racing but still its making upper 500 hp with only 5.2 liters of displacement. The only way that is going to happen is if Ford sticks that engine in a ton of different production vehicles, as GM did with the LS. Keeping it only in the Super Duty ain't gonna make for cheap and plentiful. Look at the Coyote... it's been out for years and the junkyards still ain't givin' them up at a decent price. These 7 point 3's are going to be relegated to crate engine status from Ford with associated parts to swap into other vehicles. Maybe some support from Holley. Two things...
First, that aluminum fancy intake makes me think of old school metal supercharger scoops sticking out of hoods with the 3 circle flaps. Then I think of this motor, and that big metal scoop, sticking out of the hood of a 78 LTD 2. What a hoon of a car that would be!
Second thing, why did you start your graph at 3500 RPM? this is supposed to be going into big trucks. I for one would like to know how this thing is going to be leaving a stoplight with a big load behind it. Sure sure, a 35 speed auto trans(or whatever they are up to these days) will certainly allow for gears to let the engine spin up faster into the power band. I still want to know. I want to know how it compares to old big blocks, or even the 8.1/allison combo sitting in my shed right now. Peak HP is great. My current heavy truck has "pull over a tree" power at basically idle. I would like to know how this new godzilla will do in the same rpm range, both because it will speak to it's heavy duty use, but also because it will tell a tale about how it "feels" when you drive it.
Anyone that has driven a true big block from years ago will tell you nothing they have made in the last 15 years "feels" like that. If godzilla is going to be another 5500 rpm narrow power band relies on the transmission to work type of motor, I will be dissapointed both in it's "feel" in driving, but also in the implecations that has to putting it in an old car. For that matter, if there is no option besides the factory mated 10 speed or whatever, not sure I want to drop that into an old car either. There's more to driving then just speed, for me at least. I tune my cars for driving, hooning, speed, but not all at the same time in the same car, if you know what I mean.

Righteous Indignation. LOL, NHRA top fuel has very major little innovation due to class regulations. OHC was banned in the 60s.
I’m sorry you are unable to comprehend the concept that 4 valves per cylinder allows for much more valve area for a given bore size. You can bet your ass Top Fuel would pick up a bunch of power with an optimized DOHC 4V head.

    • @BC08
      @BC08 4 роки тому +1

Righteous Indignation. I don’t need to ask myself, I already know the answer. Because diesels generally rev 3500 rpm tops and the reduced moving valve-train mass offered by a DOHC valve-train isn’t a worth the increase is physical size. If they were revving 6500 - 11,000 rpm the boons of a DOHC valve-train (which is superior in all ways save packaging) are worth the increase in engine width. Pretty simple.
The general 16 pushrod/rocker bridge setup used in most current 4V diesels are pretty fragile, and pose valve stem wear issues even in low-rpm diesels.
The 7.3 is a dinosaur, Ford has had great engines for decades (5.4/5.8 Ford GT/GT500 4V, Coyote 5.0), the 7.3 will be a footnote in history just like the 360 FE.

I'd love to see you guys work with Pat Topolinski and Mike Galley at Engine Power in Franklin, TN. (PowerNation) So many ideas with this new engine. Sounds freaking awesome! I want one!

I got almost the same estimate with some engine simulator software there with bolt on mods like headers, big intake manifold upgrade and a high lift camshaft and more timings and fuel injection.
If you really want to push beyond 600bhp. The con-rods and pistons need to be lighten to be more rev happy. Upping the compression, bigger injectors will gain more top end power while losing the huge mid range torque curve that the 7.3L stock has. I got 700+ bhp
This engine will benefit more from boosting with a blower/supercharger.
    800bhp will still be wild

So essentially.....it's inferior to the Coyote motor. It makes more power, sure....but not by much. Especially when you look at hp/liter.
Take a Coyote motor, add a cam and an intake manifold and your numbers are not that dissimilar. And you're still 130lbs lighter. This seems like it would be amazing in an offroad vehice moreso than a street car.

And I dunno if you've ever driven something with a coyote or not. But below 2500-3000 rpm they are completely gutless. And im saying this as an owner of a full bolt on S550 mustang gt that I daily drive. This engine is designed for low end torque. And given the displacement it's hard for it to not have torque for days. I'd say all things equal in the same chassis, the 7.3 would walk away from the coyote in most any street race situation or 1/8th mile. 1/4 Mile maybe not because the 5.0 has time to spin up. But you're right. This would be awesome as an offroad engine.
