One of the greatest songs ever written. How a 21/22 year old guy wrote this is beyond me... The lyrics are absolutely amazing. If you’ve been in love, this song hits you. Hard!

He sang like this in this song because it was his mood so the emotions of it were real and a reflection of his headspace. He was a tortured soul.

His voice always matched the tone of the music. On Atmosphere he sang even more darker than this. Usually matching tone-wise what Peter Hook played on bass.
On their more energetic songs you heard more of his lighter voice.

    Lyrics
    When routine bites hard
    And ambitions are low
    And resentment rides high
    But emotions won't grow
    And we're changing our ways
    Taking different roads
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Why is the bedroom so cold?
    Turned away on your side
    Is my timing that flawed?
    Our respect run so dry?
    Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives
But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Do you cry out in your sleep?
    All my failings exposed
Gets a taste in my mouth
    As desperation takes hold
    And it's something so good
    Just can't function no more?
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear up apart again

Ian Curtis also had epileptic fits, sometimes during a show. The audience thought this was part of the act when it wasn't. A decent movie about the band is "Control".

It's mind boggling what he went through. My ex is an epileptic and I just couldn't imagine her trying to sing on stages with all of the lights and extra sensory overloads. I can understand how he chose to go out how he did. It's sad, but I can completely understand why.

Ian Curtis the lead singer had various medical issues and sadly took his own life just before the band went on an American tour. As someone else said they became New Order - listen to Blue Monday. It's not your headphones it's late 70's early 80's dark black Britain with many unemployed, no future and no way out. New Order after Joy Division changed that with 24 hour party people-electro pop and dance music. Oh and it's pronounced E-an.

Weirdly almost everyone has heard the drummer out of Joy Division a heap of times, back in the early days before drum machines were widely used someone had to lay down those original beats and Stephen actually spent a lot of arduous time recording a whole heap of individual sounds for the machine. Once someone had done it nobody could be bothered doing it again so for years he would get these cheques for the royalties when someone used the drum machine in songs.

The really interesting part about the era, and this song in particular, is you get to watch music evolution. The 80s were when Punk really went mainstream, competing against Ska and Mod and Metal, when Synth Pop was truly born, and in this song in particular, you get to experience the crossover of synth and punk. For that alone, this song is a genuine musical landmark, as people rarely see any connection between the two genres until hearing this track.

Joy Division is an acquired taste. Once you listen to them more, the more you'll understand them. It's like the end of innocence.
You'd probably like New Order. New Order was the remaining members of Joy Division after Ian Curtis died.
There's a great movie about him it's called "Control" . I suggest you watch it. You'll understand Ian and his struggles with epilepsy along with becoming famous which caused family problems and the deep depression and guilt he went through. I know it sounds like a glib movie but I assure you it's fantastic.
I'll put a link to the trailer in this post.

The singer Ian Curtis suffered from really bad epilepsy which really effected his confidence and mental state, he often suffered from really bad stage fright and sadly hung himself with a washing line at just 23 years of age. The band chose to end and then became New Order. Moby has also gad a few hits with Joy Division songs like New Dawn Fades which was used on the movie Heat.

The "love will tear is apart....again" makes me think of him trying to talk to his wife about loving her...and someone else too. Inaugurating an era of genious music produced in UK, which reflected the historical moment that these people were living. Many songs of that time are depressive lyrics disguised in joyful and rich music. Influenced worldwide music forever, great classics and master bands, which keep influences generations. Suggest Pet Shop Boys (it’s a sin, west and girls, go west) , Tears for Fears (Mad World/ Everybody wants to rule the world/ Pale Shelter...)

I get what you are saying but in order to appreciate Joy Division, you sort of have to know the work of New Order which resulted from it. New Order is the more polished version of this but devoid of some of the lyrical complexity and character. But if you listen to and appreciate New Order (which were quite successful) and understand that Joy Division is the prototype for that band you realize that this singer's voice over what the music became could have been magical. And with the live stage presence of the deceased lead signer, they might have been legendary.
Also, lots of this older music is a bit muddled due to the equipment used back then and there are remastered versions of what you were watching that play a little better. Basically this is early synthesizer driven music and had a big influence on lots of other music to this day. Sort of switches the tradition of guitars as lead to the rhythm (bass and synth) taking the lead.

Add in his severe epilepsy, which sometimes flared during those performances, and you had an intensity and a stage presence that was completely unique. Few people gave more of themselves while performing than Curtis. Please give "Transmission" or "She's Lost Control" a try in one of your future videos, especially a live version. Listen to Disorder, the first track of the album. Fun fact time of why I relate to Ian Curtis:
Disorder has a line that goes something like, "Light's are flashing, cars are crashing. It's getting frequent now." As somebody who suffers from epilepsy I can relate to Ian. One second I was driving down the freeway doing about when I apparently had a Grand Mal seizure and drove straight into a concrete divider. I woke up in the hospital without a scratch on me and no clue what had happened. My point is, the stress of dealing with a seizure inducing condition is tough enough to deal with. I can't imagine what Ian, somebody who struggled terribly with Anxiety, let alone epilepsy was going through in those final days.
    Side Note
I was driving a newish german sedan when the Grand Mal happened (Safe reliable car). Normally I set my cruise control between 78-85 MPH when driving on that particular part of the freeway. The barrier split my car in half down the middle like a samurai sword, and aside from a concussion, I didn't have a scratch on me.
God exists in one form or another. I should not be alive.

Then love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
    [Verse 2]
Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side
Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry
Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives
    [Chorus]
But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
    [Guitar Solo]
    [Verse 3]
You cry out in your sleep, all my failings exposed
And there's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold
Just that something so good, just can't function no more
    [Chorus]
Then love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Then love, love will tear it apart again
Love, love will tear apart again.

Ian Curtis (EEE Ann CURR tis) was an epileptic who would sometime have SEIZURES on stage and the audience thought it was part of the act.
Yes, this song about unrequited love. He was more in love than the girl was with him. This song is his berries heart in some and lyrics. If bittersweet was a song, THIS would be it.
Joy Division is the name of the band. After Ian passed away the rest of the band came to the US as New Order and you can still hear Joy Divisions sounds in them.
True fact, the Joy Division was in fact the German Nazis prostitution section to eat used Jewish prisoners as pleasure gives of the Elite SS officers. Here the name, JOY Division. True fact, look it up.

Ian Curtis was a musical genius gone from us way too soon the day before him and Joy Division were supposed to start their American tour him and his wife broke up and had a fight and his wife came back to check up on him and found that he had hung himself from the ceiling he had epilepsy and stuff like that and they really didn't have that many drugs in the UK for that type of stuff and it cost him his life! The three remaining band members went on to create a band called New World Order! You should probably react to New World orders Blue Monday or Bizarre Love Triangle

E-ann Curtis died when he was 23. Listen to Isolation or Colony. He wrote an entire album basically saying he was going to kill himself. His town spawned many great bands, and yes New Order's impact on the world has been eminence. New Order are the surviving members of Joy Division... a name they chose based of a group of chosen Arian women who were meant to procreate the nazi regime.

Lyrics are for poems,...poetry has always tried to imitate music with it's rhymes,...Joy division always said that it's great if you make your own view on the lyrics based on your own life experiences,...sorry for my crappy inglish,....cheers from Barcelona!!!.

He hung himself in his kitchen while listening to the new Stooges record. His young wife found him that way, the needle on the Stooges record skipping at the end. True story.
Years later, Iggy Pop, singer for the Stooges, would cover this song live with the band. It was the only performance Iggy ever in his life gave where he played absolutely straight laced. Total respect and love for Ian. I think the video might be up on YT

Ian Curtis, had seizures, was very depressed, he felt like his Wife didn’t love him, so he cheated. He had a baby girl. The night the band was supposed to head to America, he sadly took his life... Ian Curtis was the lead singer. You can tell, by the look in his eyes, how much pain it was to live his life....God bless his poor, poor soul. I suggest you listen to “Disorder” by Joy Division.

The film Control is about the back story to Joy Division and Ian, amazing performances but it's hard to watch because we know the ending. Genius but troubled, hence the haunting beautiful lyrics.
