With the passing of Neal Peart, Danny Carey the Octopus is now the greatest living drummer.
Agreed
Hmmm. Stewart Copeland still breathes.
@@The_Kiosk 😅
I wonder what Neil's reaction would be to this performance.
I don't know enough about drumming to tell who was better at drumming techniques. But as far as enjoyment goes, I find Danny Careys drumming more unique and enjoy it more than Pearts or any other drummer I have heard so far.
The precision is deeper than you realize. Those pads he's using were designed by him. They are not only location sensitive, but pressure sensitive.
What I love about Danny Carey's playing is that it is super technical, but never overwhelms the songs. You could say that about all of the mebers of Tool.
Tool is a symphony of emotions. Of Think. Of Soul. Of Truth.
His drum kit alone is a piece of art 🎭
A 40-lbs bronze snare... 😳
Maynard is very spiritual. Early Tool is angry Tool. Through their discography, you see the emotional evolution and maturity of them.
They are a sight to behold.
Maynard believes in spiritual energy, but he is an atheist.
The Octopus 🐙 is a living legend. The speed, precision, & technicality of his skill set.. the organic feel he endows with such complexity.. the endless cultural inspirations to draw from.. Danny is the GOAT!
Danny Carey is my second favorite drummer of all time! He’s my first as well but also my second.
Danny Carey used to be my favorite drummer...
One of the greatest rock drumming performances of all time. That snare drum tone is absolutely filthy.
Not one of. He is the greatest now that Neil passed
He’s the octopus
El estepario siberiano is the new octopus
Greatest living drummer period!!!
Danny is our Michael Jordan. cherish it. so stoked Tool is finally getting their flowers
Danny is Always just In The Pocket with his playing. Legend has it that Danny once made a deal with the Devil. No-one knows what Danny asked for, but the Devil got drumming lessons
🐙 Tool live is phenomenal!! Also, this whole album is a masterpiece of music!
You don’t need to specify an album. If tool made it then it’s pure gold
@@fiverx2159 I agree but I feel like it got some hate.
@@lbow09 I think every album does because they are always changing. But you might be right that this one got more
@@fiverx2159 I think people were expecting old Tool and there definitely is some of that in the album but it’s different, more mature, in my opinion. A lot of people didn’t listen with a , um, blank slate?!? If that makes sense.
I've seen them 2× and they are the best concerts I've seen
The dynamic of is absolutely amazing. Playing four different things at once. In different sequence as if he has 4 separate brains
"What was that bro!?" into shoulder shrug. That's the proper response to unfathomable awesomeness!
This video made me a fan! You are correct. Every concert should have this camera angle.
Dig deep on each of their artists and it's all mind blowing. Best band alive today.
And a new "Tool Army" member is born. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This was recorded by Vic Firth for a drum symposium Danny was putting on. This video got me to pay more attention to the individual musicians in a band.
Danny Carry is insane, you can see his entire body breathing into the next beat… Best way I can describe it. His flow and attack at the same time is insane!
Tool army has you! Get ready to go down the rabbit hole of ALL their content. Start up a separate category for them and watch Tool on the same designated day of the week!! You’re life is about to be impacted… in a good way!!!
"I don't think that this drummer is human" is a nice way to explain Danny Carey. He's always, always, always... in the "pocket" of drumming. Never over-exerting. Not once.
Metronomes use Danny to keep accurate time
They should just change the term metronome to Danny.......makes sense lol
What is the best about Danny C is how he can leave the timing of the song make his own thing make it sound good yet bring it back so the guitar and bassist can stay on timing.
Funny comment from Adam during a backstage Q&A here on UA-cam: "I'll play something for Danny, and he'll start playing the most opposite shit. Now I'm forgetting the riff that I WROTE."
So he's playing 3 different time signatures that sync up every so often. I can't remember excatly but it's something like ever 13 bars or so, the three time signatures sync up. But yeah at the time of this video he was 57/58 yrs old. I"m 53 and have been playing drums since i was 11. I did not practice enough to do this lol. I can play Stinkfist and i get away with Sober but most of their music requires some serious dedication and practice to be able to play.
There's a video of Neil Peart doing a drum solo, I think it was in Frankfurt. At the level of Mr. Carey and Mr. Peart there's little point in arguing which is better.
I've heard people describe tool as a band with a lead drummer and a rhythm singer. Danny Carey doesn't have coordination, he has separation and it is truly mind bending.
He is mesmerizing. Excelent description: He lives here! Best description of Carey ever.
There are levels to musicianship and Tool are masters of their craft
I was at this show. Truly amazing experience. I hope you got tickets to the tour that was just announced. Everyone should experience this band live.
This video is taking over UA-cam.
The best compliment I have for Tool's composition is they can make the greater rhythm of weird rhythms still listenable. I don't need to know how to count the music, the vibes will carry you through what should otherwise be confusing. Idk. It's like magic
Somehow they build a groove out of time signatures that make no sense. It's magic.
This is a masterclass in surfing through time signatures..
I gained 10% more brain cells listening to this!
its a polyrythmic signature. Danny is a master in creating out of meter beats
from 9:30 in the video watch his right hand and how high he raises the stick. Not only is he keeping in time in an odd time signature, he is varying how loud he is playing in waves by hitting harder or softer for the next 20-30 seconds. After you notice that take a look at his left hand during the rim shots. He is doing it left handed too.
I really think this reaction video has totally under sold what Danny is doing here... undoubtedly one of the top 5 drummers in the world. No mention on the size of the kit and this bloke has just pretended like this is a perfectly normal timing signature. I'm no musician but what happens in this performance is absolutely astounding!!!
I've watched ALL the reactions on UA-cam to this performance.
This is the one I'm most looking forward to, because I know what's coming.
watching Carey play drums is up there with watching SRV play guitar
it seems imposible that anyone could be that good, but there they are doing it right before your eyes
This man is in his 60’s while performing this. That is all
59 at the time, will be 63 this year
Count the 4s all you want, Danny is on those 1631473 notes.
And, just to bring it home, this gentleman is 61 years old.
Danny the 🐙 is insane - the 🐐. His kit is huge , I don’t how someone could remember all of that 😂 #TOOL
A lifetime of experience and constant drive. For him, it's just one of his many compositions, I'm sure. "A snapshot of a particular moment in time," as he's said repeatedly in interviews.
I love Tool, Danny, but my credit goes to you. Great reaction; authentic and genuine..
This guy is so good that the joke is Danny made a deal with the devil. Nobody knows what Danny got, but the devil got drum lessons.
Multiple polyrhythms, complex time signatures, insanely precise technique and speed and skill but without overbearing the rest of the band. He's probably the best drummer alive.
Speaking of drummers of incredible skill, check out Larnell Lewis if you haven't already. There's a Drumeo video where he hears Enter Sandman by Metallica (with the drum track removed) for the first time ever, then plays through it not only with his usual marvelous skill, but was able to pick up on the feel well enough that he was really damn close to the original drum track that he never heard. Definitely an upper echelon drummer.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are Witnessing the Octopus in his Natural Habitat. - David Attenborough
Danny has 2 brains. 2 people share one man.
Another fantastic drum cam…. Meshuggah’s “Clockworks.” Tomas Haake is amazing as well.
"Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned"
"Right In Two"
"Lateralus"
All these songs (as well as others, but these in particular feature the fiendish Danny) are worth hearing - seeing, if you can find good live videos. There are some out there.
Danny, as well as the other members, are in classes all by themselves, and that puts Tool into their own universe. And it's well worth exploring, if you haven't already.
And, like all the best bands, Tool live their finest life live onstage. There's no live experience like a Tool show.
They say Danny Carey made a deal with the Devil. No one knows what Danny got but the devil got drum lessons
Count the beat!?!?!? Are you f'n kiddin me brother? This is ᎢᎾᎾᏞ! To the layman's eye he's goin nuts, to those of us who know what he's REALLY doing...4 different time signatures, doubles with his left hand, triplets w his right, one foot on the high hat and the other on the bass drum 🤯🥴🥴🥴. If I got lost you could kiss finding the one beat for a measure lol 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously...it's like guys that play like Peart and Carrey can split their brain in 4 quadrants and go from muscle memory.
My favorite part is when they time the last one perfectly and Danny looks over and smiles ear to ear like "Hell yea we nailed it!"
I really love your reaction to this. Thank you!!
I'm grateful to have seen Tool (Danny) live double digit times. Phenomenal!
Absolutely keep count. Every time. No matter what. Usually after the first time listening I'll listen to lyrics, guitar, etc. I always start with counting though.
My favorite part of this performance is always at 9:30 when he just goes into full on zen mode and just tears apart the entire kit in polyrhythmic fashion. 😮
A fun fact about Danny Carey is that he's also an excellent basketball player (he's like 6' 7"). In fact, he's good enough that he was scouted by some teams as young man. Of course, given the choice between being a solid contributor to an NBA team or the greatest drummer of all time, he picked correctly. But he still plays in a rec league at age 61, and regularly smokes dudes half his age.
There are levels in everything. Danny Carey is the tip at the top of the highest level possible
He is 6'5" and 58 years old in this video (if I'm not mistaken).
and in great shape!
I used to play in a band called Pneuma. I take this as confirmation that it was a cool name. ;)
I started playing guitar in 1986 and as a hobbyist,I'm not bad.One thing I've never even tried to do is a Tool song.Count Tool?I'm sure it's not impossible...but I know it's not fun.I enjoy playing a ton of stuff, but when it comes to this band,I'll let them entertain me.They are four musical prodigies smashed into one giant and excellent experience. Their live show is better than birthday cake and a back scratch...at the same time.Maybe even a foot rub. 🤪🤘
Every time I see this video, I'm more amazed at Danny's skills. He's a master.
And this is 1 song!! 😳 Drummers work hard!! His feet never stop either!!
This is the most I've witness your amazing smile!! 😊 Glad you enjoyed this, He's amazing.
As far as counting, I admit I do occasionally, but with Danny, impossible. My foot/feet are always moving though.
As far as title/lyrics and your description "weird" and I use it very loosely, comes from Maynard and he is "weird" super intelligent and Hella writer!! Love Tool!!
I've seen a few good videos of Travis Barker in studio and adore watching Neil Peart. John Bonham has a few too.
The man passed up a full scholarship to play college basketball to be a drummer..... totally made the right choice lol! He's a big dude and he's in his 60's in this video, not bad for an old man
as far as drum playthroughs go, you have to watch anything by Matt Gartska of Animals as Leadaers!! Talk about precision and mastery of time.
This is my favorite video of Danny live. There's plenty of live concert footage, and various drum-cam videos, but this is the only one with good video and audio, unfortunately. Danny is the most original drummer I've ever had the privilege to watch. His chops are second to none and it doesn't hurt that he's just a really nice dude. We REALLY need more videos of Danny playing with this quality of video and audio.
More Tool. 💙
NEVER look away from his drumming because he's that fast and you'll miss something..... 👀 ON!!!
i hope one day they just off and dump a video like this for every song they've made since 1996. all at once. this being the only one is such a shame.
drum cam screens at a concert would definitely be a good idea, kinda reminds me of what slipknot does, where their drummer is on a turnstile that lifts them 90 degrees into the air and rotates them like a clock, tho drum cams are a much easier solution to the problem, lol
Not my favorite TOOL songs but thus is by far, the best song performance they are currently doing. It's unbelievable live. 😎
You are correct my my friend…he produces Glory.
Love your reaction . Always on point . Danny Carey is an amazing drummer and Tool is one of the great bands of our lifetime
That was fun, thanks for doing Tool.
Danny Carey is the god that octopuses pray to at night.
Danny's left arm is one of the top 5 drummers of all time. His right arm is top 3.
Not sure if you have
Reacted to the drum duel from godsmack but that is amazing.
It's even more insane because DUDE IS 62 YEARS OLD
Tool is touring soon, go check them out! It'll be the best concert of your life!
He looks up what he's going to watch and then speaks like he's known this all along on every video..."This is like so satisfying to watch"...looks at other monitors constantly during the video lol. Asks question..."yes" asks question..."no". Makes a statement then "right". This guy has a calendar with word of the day. I have to do it, he's a Tool
Danny is definitely top 5.
@11:00 mark, this is why he is known as the Octopus in the drumming world.
The limb independence is crazy!
Their song "Lateralus" is based on the Fibonacci Sequence. Very smart. Danny is a Polyrhythm Master. Peace
One of them for sure ..his style is unique for sure 🔥🔨army
I don't know why, but at the end of that epic solo when Danny hits the cymbal twice and silences it it just makes me laugh.
In the song Lateralus the Fibanachi sequence comes into play
Soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew we were going to take you on a journey. In related videos, I would suggest checking out Matt Garstka - "Red Miso" by Animals As Leaders and Brann Dailor - "Ghost of Karelia" there's also some good drum clinics from NAM and the like. Brann and Danny have done some really great "drum offs" where you can tell they're both having the greatest time ever.
Danny is basically the text book definition of a drummer, distilled into it's purest form.
Leteralus. Simply put their best song
Yesssssssssssssssss🔥
danny makes the hardest beats of any drummer in music.
Nice.
I need you to react to Vicarious, Lateralus, Right in Two, or The Grudge. The Grudge has a 25-second scream at the end that is unparalleled.
Yes, yes it does.
Vic Firth put this together 🤘
Your smile shows how much you love drumming. I'm the same way. I'd rather have a drum cam in live videos and concerts. Check out some Mike Portnoy stuff.
It stays interesting because of the time signatures. Others commented, but for those who dont understand. Most music has 4 or 6 "beats" per measure. Your brain can process that easily. When there are 7, or 9, it feels like the "1" is fluent. It almost moves on you.
Hi Hat control is insane when he keeps it slightly open ...
love it.... he is insanely good with dynamics in general
@@stefanforrer2573 yep
Great reaction, as usual!
What happened with the jump at 7:07?
“The drummer sets the heartbeat of the song”
Yes. You’re right. Now go to Lateralus. Do your homework first. Then react. Mind blowing bro. Keep going. 🤘
You gotta watch the video where’s he’s playing with a college marching band. He envelops the tiny drum set
