    When I had children at home and homeschooling, in order to keep my house neat we had 5 minute pickups before lunch, dinner, and bedtime. Every one would pick up and put away any clutter or objects left out. That kept my house continually clear of obvious clutter and I was able to have guests without panic.

    Great video. The things you need to declutter in your life are not the things cluttering up your house. They just can’t be put away properly because of all the stored clutter!

    I just paused this video to go schedule a donation truck pickup. I know if I schedule a pickup I will stay motivated to actually declutter some of the stuff from my kitchen I'm not using. Thanks for that extra push!

    These days bread machines are being used a lot due to the state of the economy. I don't store it on the counter but use it often.

      You can buy bread for 89 cents or 99 cents.... at almost every store. Bread hasn't costed more then 99 cents in my life time and I'm almost 40. I cant buy all the ingredients for less then that price.

      Everyone should use whatever they want to. Another idea...baking bread in the oven. It is all challenging.

    Excellent!
    I’ve been learning this since August. I’m beginning to value space more than belongings. I like opening up a cupboard and seeing a lot less clutter.
    But I’m so glad to see your videos because they reinforce what I’m learning. They put it to the forefront of my mind.

    In case this would help anyone else, I have a stainless steel IKEA cart (3 levels) to which I added a power strip. It acts like an appliance garage (this duplex has no storage and the kitchen holds 1 person at a time). I decided to keep bread machine, masticating juicer, toaster, blender and food processor as well as a bin for accessories that go with all of them on the cart. I also have my hand mixer, zoodle maker, and pasta making equipment in plastic shoe boxes on a shelving unit nearby. If any of those are deemed unworthy, they are ready to donate. In order to have "clear enough" counters my instantpot, water kettle and kitcheny cannisters line the back of the kitchen counter..as of today I have kept them current for about 1 week. I look at it like this: if I can't keep the surface clean I run the risk of damaging whatever sits there. I have had leaks under the sink and it is reasonable that batter could spritz onto things while getting prepared on the countertop. I know this is a middle road approach but it is vast improvement over previous (every square inch of horizontal surface was unusable per stuff).

    You give such practical & useful help. I work in a kitchen, appliances are used during food preparation and then put away. Need to do the same at home. One touch rule- game changer.

    It was a huge ah-ha when I saw a UA-cam video where a toaster was put into a tray and set into a cabinet. I varied between counter or cabinet, and usually the toaster lived on the counter. No matter where it went, there were crumbs. Now, the tray (small baking pan) captures the crumbs and is the permanent 'holder' for the toaster. I remove it only to empty the crumbs and wipe the toaster and then the tray goes back in a cabinet. Such a small thing made such a big difference.

    I love your videos but I hate the phrase "stupid-easy". It seems.. what's the word... just.. I don't know. It's like you are loudly belching in the middle of your niece's wedding ceremony or something.
    I hope you take my comment in the spirit in which it was given. I truly love your content and style, and as I had told you in another video, you massively helped my friend get her insanely cluttered, messy, filthy kitchen in just under three weeks. She continues to get her home under control. I really do love your videos. I just truly despise that phrase, which seems so unlike the rest of your video.

    Thank you for all your tips in this video and others. I recently adopted the reset tip in the kitchen, I do it twice a day, and it really helps keep it tidy. In the morning I don’t dread going in there to make my coffee. 😊

    Thank you Rachael! The morning and evening resets have changed my life! I'm getting to the point that the house seems to clean itself! Today my children had two friends over, they played with lots of games and when it was time for them to go, everyone cleaned up! The children are enjoying a clean home. Tomorrow is my weekly reset, and I'm looking forward to it because the house has been cleaned throughout the week.

    These are such great tips! Since I found the FlyLady method, I’ve had much better habits in my house and have been doing the one touch rule, but didn’t have a name for it. Love this concept! And I have morning and evening routines and those help SO much!

    Yes , you are soo right ! I am in the elimination process! I have cook books 📚 and except to look through them when I first get them they go into a drawer and that’s where they stay ,except occasionally! I am moving things from one place to another and it like a “merry go round” ,so I am getting off and get back to “less is just right “ ! Love your videos ,you are an inspiration to get back to 😵‍💫.sanity ! Love ❤️and Blessing . 😇 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    Am I the only one who feels like moving the toaster back and forth means I'd be managing crumbs in two places instead of one? I feel like this goes against the one touch rule. It would cause Hubby to cook his toast over a burner if he had to work that hard moving appliances for a piece of toast or cup of coffee, etc

    • @Nourishingminimalism
      @Nourishingminimalism  3 роки тому

      We only use the toaster once a week or so, if it was daily, I might feel differently, but since it's only once a week, I'd rather not work around it the rest of the time.

    What do you do when u have a very stuborn husband? He wants everyting on the counter 😡

    • @nikkikinney1899
      @nikkikinney1899 3 роки тому +3

      Some people are more visual and need to see it, so if it's something He uses regularly, leave it out for now. But can you group them in one section and work to have the rest of the counters clear? I cleared half my counters completely and I love it, maybe he'll start to see the beauty and benefit of a totally clear counter 😊

    • @Nourishingminimalism
      @Nourishingminimalism  3 роки тому +2

      Like Nikki said, some people need to see things. For others, having things out is extremely stressful, but both parties need to be able to talk about it and come to a compromise, and if that can happen, sometimes it's easier with a mediator/counselor present. ❤️

    • @KJong-gz5hv
      @KJong-gz5hv 3 роки тому

      Compromise: To contain (t)his things, use a serving tray on the counter. Easy for you to move when you need the workspace. Easy for him to see when it became too much things, when the tray has an overflow.

    I can’t relax if my worktops are untidy.
    I can never understand why some people leave containers of rice etc on their worktops. Why not just put them in a cupboard? It’s not like rice etc is anything exciting to look at.😀

    When I learned that wheat and dairy trigger my "chronic fatigue" I made changes to my eating habits which also resulted in clutter reduction. No more pasta jars on my kitchen counter. No more bread makers. No more toaster. No more waffle maker. . . . Likewise when I stopped eating rice. Thank you again for all of your excellent advice. ♥️

    Good video, thanks. I put my toaster in a cabinet because I rarely use it. When I want toast it's easier to grab my skillet and toast bread in it than to grab the toaster and plug it in. Guess I need to get rid of the toaster. I put my Kitchaid mixer in the cabinet because I rarely use it. Now I never use it because it's too difficult to drag it out of the cabinet. It's back on top of the counter. (Not getting rid of it)

    I love your videos. I had a question regarding family that their love language is buying things. How do you manage gifts that you don't want but the person gets hurt when you want to get rid of it?

    • @Nourishingminimalism
      @Nourishingminimalism  3 роки тому +10

      Thanks Brianna! First, I started with talking about minimalism a lot, so they understood what I was aiming for and as my house emptied, they weren't caught off-guard at all.
      And then I would try to be as kind as possible if they did ask. But mostly, people that want to know what you do with stuff they gave as a gift, and get upset with you about it, that can be a sign that they have deeper controlling issues and seeking the help of a counselor is good, to learn how to set healthy boundaries. Emotionally healthy will not hold it against you, even if they are disappointed at first.
      Also, keep in mind that how they feel is not your responsibility.
      I graciously accept gifts and thank them, and I don't tell them when I get rid of items, because we don't want to intentionally hurt people's feelings. But if they ask, I would be honest. "We enjoyed it, and appreciate the thought you put into it, but it was time to pass it on." It's not always easy, but that's basically it. ❤️

    Rachel, I was just curious why I never see paper towels or a phone on any of the counters of minimalists. We use an old cloth to clean the counters, but sometimes you really need a paper towel. Where do you put your paper towels? I don’t see a paper towel holder. We keep our phone in the kitchen.

    • @Nourishingminimalism
      @Nourishingminimalism  3 роки тому +2

      I don't have a land-line phone, only cell phones.
      As for paper towels, I keep a roll under my little sink. I don't use them much, but you're right- when I have to clean the grill, paper towel works better.
