My Troy-Bilt Mustang 22hp/50" was bought new from Lowe's by my step-dad in 2007, I bought it 2 years ago, maintenance was/is always kept up and all that's been done besides blades, belts and oil changes is I put new brushes in the starter a couple months ago and bought a new battery, like you said if you take care of them they will last. And on an unrelated note I've had the same Kenmore electric clothes dryer since 1994 and it still works great, only had to change a couple drum rollers a few years ago, that's it.

Amen, good advice. Proper maintenance, keep it clean, use it as intended. I cut commercial for 25 years. I still have 2 Gravely’s. One is about 18 years old. The other is about 8 years old. Both Karasucky engines. I’ve replaced spindles and blades. That’s about it.

Did that come with the solid front tires, or did you order them. I was trying to buy one of those last year and they were back ordered so I bought a john deere instead. The toro that I tested rode so much smoother. My old mower I had since 94 and was still running perfectly I always kept up on the maintenance and kept it clean.

I have come out of retirement somewhat to help people with their equipment problems. I've repaired small engines for 40 years or so , but there is no one repairing them within 60- 100 miles of us . I closed the shop 10 years ago but still did a few for old friends and customers. But like you've mentioned in other videos, it's getting hard to get parts , warranty work , or even dealers after you buy .i mentioned in one of your last video's about Stens closing parts places , and said Portland was the last one but there is still one in Indiana. So good luck, grass rats , when guys like me and Teryl quit repairing , your on your own !!! Great video !!!😊

Taryl's choke cable story reminds me of when I was in the RV and mobile home repair business.
I worked for a big RV dealership for five years before going out on my own.
One day I went in to the dealership having to buy "authorized factory dealership parts" that I couldn't buy on my own.
The service maager, a long time rival, thought he would try to get one up on me by saying "hey here's our biggest competition".
I replied that I really wasn't any competition because I didn't sell any RVs but after the warranty ran out they called me and not the dealership for repairs.
I left him at the parts counter with his mouth gaping!

My brother has a Kawasaki FR691V on his mower. Two years ago, it started belching smoke and drinking oil. He thought it was shot and needed an overhaul. I'm not a small engine mechanic. I managed the maintenance department of an over the road trucking company before retirement so my knowledge is limited to big engines, farm equipment engines and automotive engines. I asked him to consider if that engine had valve seals. We researched and found that it did and ordered a set. We removed the spark plugs, put a soft rope into the cylinder to hold the piston in place and removed and replaces the oil seals. Two years later, no oil consumption, no smoke.

I own a Toro time cutter that I purchased about 5 years ago, love it! I do wash my deck and scrape it after every mowing and it does wear out the bottom bearing like you said, but I can get bearings cheap and they are so easy to replace I just replace the bottom every year or so when they start to get a little noisy, I take the deck off once a year to scrape and clean the bottom and repaint, so I replace the bearing then if needed.

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 2 місяці тому +1

I suppose if you have nothing better to do, you can scrape the deck every time, also wash it as well, then replace the bearings well before their natural expiration date and otherwise end up over-servicing your mower. It just sounds ridiculous but you said you're in love with your mower. Me, I've got better things to do. Mine's 23 years old and still running the original bearings.... because I don't expose it to water, just a scrape.

This is a bit of a different video, but one that I really enjoyed. I have a story to tell about a zero turn lawnmower. I live in the city on a small lot and have not need for a zero turn lawnmower. But, things changed for me when I rode my ebike to Lowes for some screws that I needed on a home project. Lowes had no bicycle rack to lock my bike to, so I locked it to a John Deere Z530M zero turn lawnmower that was out in front of the store. While do so, I admired what a nice machine this was. My boys live in the country and all have acres of grass to mow and do it with MTD riding lawnmowers. After I acquired my screws and at checkout, I asked if my veterans discount would apply to the Z530M and they said yes. A few days later, it was delivered to one of my son's 20 acre farm home 70 miles away for free! As it turned out; this machine came from a large lawn equipment supply store chain as they have their company sticker on it and it will go to them for warrantee work if required. A few of it's features are, digital hour and fuel gauges, roll over protection bar (ROP), comfort seat with arm rests and seat belt, deck spindles that can be greased. Now, the two MTD lawnmowers are used to cut down in the ditches and pull yard carts around. So, this is how I got a zero turn lawnmower; wasn't really thinking about one, or a particular brand, but so far, I (we) could not be happier with it! Karl in Michigan

Bought a TimerCruster over 4 years ago. Has the Snoro engine on it (I know the Kohler engines suck and the Toro engine was rated at a 300 hour warranty vs 200 on the Kawasucky). Put an hour meter on it before use. Changed the oil and filter right at 5 hours like the factory suggests. Change the oil every 25 hours since I live in a sandy/dusty area and shoot grease in the front wheel bearings. Zero problems with the engine or hydraulics. Just turned 240 hours on it, put new sparkies at 200 hours as suggested by the factory. Mow 3.3 acres with it.

Great looking machine Taryl. Last year my brother who lives next door to me bought a new Xmark Raidas E Series with a 60in deck and the Emark 26HP engine. We both have lots that are just shy of an acre. It is obviously over- kill to have that type of machine for such a small lot. It takes him all of twenty min. to cut his lawn. Great cutting machine and does a great job mulching leaves in the fall. If my Cub Cadet GT 2550 ever dies on me, I may buy a Toro or Xmark 0 turn machine. My 2017 Cub Cadet which I bought new only has 450 hours on it and is still in very good shape. The dealer close to me sells both Toro and Exmark as well as Cub Cadet and few other less expensive brands. Love your videos and have learned a lot watching them as well as being entertained. Look forward to your Sunday videos. Thanks for sharing your new Toro Time Saver machine. Hope it serves you as good as your older one.

A couple of things. I just bought the previous years model of what you have. The spot in the dash is for an hour meter, a $100 option I believe, but you can get one on scamazon for around $12 and the wiring is already there to just plug in. The other changes over mine, 5 gal rather than 3 gal gas tank, better deck hanging system, more aggressive tires. If I could have waited I would have preferred the newer model. My seat lifts and the battery is under it. I also have the Toro engine so the jury is out on that! I do really like it so far, cutting a little over an acre in just over an hour.

I'm surprised that Taryl didn't buy a used commercial unit. But then again, a residential machine that gets cared for will last a long time too. I got lucky, and found a used commercial ZTR that needed some work, so I got it for a good price. One thing I like about my mower over Taryl's... mine has serviceable hydros. Knowing Taryl, though, he can probably service non-serviceable hydros.
Buying from a dealer... Several years ago, I bought a Toro Recycler push mower from a dealer, and it developed a problem after about a year. A problem that I thought should be covered under warranty. The estimated repair was NOT going to be covered by warranty, and was going to take 3 weeks. I fixed it myself. I used to be a big advocate of buying from a dealer, but not anymore. Mowers aren't complex. I can fix most problems, so I buy from wherever I get the best deal. Usually used, because warranties don't mean much anymore.

I bought an SLT 1550 for 200 bucks.. without a deck. It's like the garden tractor style, with the larger rear wheels. Then a month later I found a really nice 50" triple deck with a brand new belt for 100 bucks; clipped right on, no issues. It was an hour drive away, but my brother just happened to be working there and brought it home for me. So for 300 dollen.. I now have a very nice and very clean looking 4k dollen mower. All that was wrong with the mower itself was the start solenoid busted apart; the guy didn't' know how to fix it, so then it sat for awhile, so I had to clean the carbs and flush the tank. But she's a beast.. I think it's 26hp kohler command. (might be 23hp, I forget- it's dual piston). Fantastic mower.. I'm super happy with it

Taryl, I got to tell you I got a 42" Toro with the Steering Wheel. I bought it at the Power Shop where I live, its a residential mower with the Toro branded engine on it. I'm sure it must be close to 10 years old by now and I've never had any troubles with it. I live in a place where we have to cut grass almost year round. Its the best mower I've ever owned. All I've ever had to do to it is change the oil and filters, and of course replace the battery a couple of times. I've never had to change the spark plugs or anything else. I even always used that crappy 87 octane 10% ethanol gas I get from wal-mart in it. I'm starting to need some service on it now though. I find that the cut is not as smooth as it used to be and its leaving a few blades of grass standing when I look back after I mow my yard. I think It might need new mower blades or sharpening of the old ones. Also, a few months ago it started backfiring after I shut it off, so I guess I'm going to have to take off that carburator plunger thing and make sure its not sticking, because of that crappy walmart gas I been using. I really envy your new mower, I don't care much for tha twin stick steering and like my steering wheel mower, but lower back is starting to hurt more from the bouncing around on the mower. That spring mounted platform I bet rides good. The seat springs on my mower are pretty harsh. I just wanted to say that looks like a real good mower you got and that kinda sucky engine on it was most likely your best choice. Oh, I cut about the same size lawn as you do at my house, except we got that St. Augustine grass here and that stuff grows fast and thick down here.

My eXmark has same 50 fab deck, same Kawasaki FR691V engine. I did have my neighbor....replace the engine mounting bolts.
The bolts busted a couple. The engine moved, and jacked up the drive belt, then the plastic fins on the Transaxle. Runs great now...I need to tune it up, and I need to follow your governor seal replacement video! 2012 eXmark Quest 50s 😊 12 years old.

I bought a Toro Time Cutter with My Ride and 42 inch cut after I saw your review awhile back. It has the 22 horse Kohler engine. I put a hour meter on it before I started using it. It now has 100 hours and I have had no problems. Other than blades I have had to replace the grass chute and the air filter cover but that was because I broke them myself. Being a zero turn and being that I had never used a zero turn before I liked the speed adjustment but after I got used to using it I put it on fast and never change it now. Like you I'm not a one brand person but I do reccomend Toro.

I bought a commercial Toro commercial zero turn. I love that thing! It has My Ride and it is way better than the machines without it. I have had it for 5 years and had no problems whatsoever. I did service the hydros and replaced a belt (a rock bounced up and took a chunk outta the deck belt), but I would buy it again tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!

We had a John Deere LT160 that my grampa bought new from the Deere Dealer in 2003. Tractor saw just shy of 1000hrs before my uncle got it & by then the transmission blew up when it was probably just low on fluid, & he junked it when the engine still ran fine.
Put 1 coil on it, cleaned the carb once, never touched the fuel pump, 1 ignition switch, 1 tire, & a few deck trimming belts cuz we kept killing them when we’d hit a rock in the yard.
    Thing was pretty darn loyal.
When we got rid of it at 900hrs we upgraded to a Scag FreedomZ.

I worked for a cemetery and we had a John Deere garden tractor. It had a V-twin B&S. That mower was used every day, five days a week. During the course of the summer, we would put 35 hrs a week, for 7 months. That mower lasted 10 yrs. Because I took care of it.

I'm NOT a Toro Guy. The local long time Toro dealer closed this month and I'm NOT sad. Now on the sixth year owning a Bad Boy ZT Elite 48" with mulch kit model with "serviceable 3100 series drives" and adjustable lap bar knobs. I've had to replace deck spindles and blades and one deck belt. Oh yeah, and this surprised me to have to do this , I had to replace the front caster wheel bearing in the wheels. Pretty much all parts came from Ebay. Most all the parts vendors you give parts numbers for won't sell to me because I'm not a dealer. I'm gonna retire next year and am thinking about treating myself to another, new Bad Boy (same everything components). The one thing on your new machine I was surprised at was buying the non serviceable hydro drives, just don't make sense man.

I know everyone wants to defend their purchases, and I understand that, but you've done way more on yours in 6 years than I've done on my Toro MX5060 in 15 years. And my land is rough on mowers. Two acres, very bumpy, many exposed roots to hook on, etc. Every time I go to Rural King I lust after the Bad Boys. You just convinced me to forget them. Glad you're happy but I'll stick to Toro.

Great video. Love the stories. My uncle had a shop. The stuff ppl came in with. Some funny af. Some scarey shit. Guy came in said his flywheel key was sheared. We took the shroud off. He actually broke the fly wheel in half! He then notched every fin with a hack saw. He then wrapped bailing wire around the fly wheel. My uncle calls him up. Says hey nucklehead, the key is fine. Your rigged fly wheel won't fly. With. You now how fast it spins? That thing comes apart its gonna hurt. You had to see it to believe it. This was before cell phones. Wish I had a picture of it. Guy probably spent half a day notching that fly wheel. I fixed so many mowers as a kid I can't remember the crap I seen. That one I will never forget.

I bought a new Toro Timecutter 5000 in 2008, still using it, have replaced many belts, all the tires, spindles, idler pulleys and several sets of blades. Single cylinder 21 hp Kohler engine still runs great, never had transmission problems. I had a 2 plus acre yard in Houston so it was used weekly for 5 or 6 months a year. I had both idler and tensioner pulley bearing give out and when the tensioner pulley went out this year it took out the belt. Other than that its been a great machine and it is a home owner model built to almost commercial status. It has the 25 hp. Briggs Intek and i havent had any problems so far with it. Snapper got bought out so parts are harder to get now but thats corporate Amerika.

I have a 1999 Scotts John Deere S20hp/48 and it still is running great. I always blow it off and do maintenance and it's always kept inside a shop when not in use. So your right, it's how you take care of it. I also have a 2020 XT1 46" Cub Cadet that gave me a lot of trouble in the beginning. I have eliminated all of those crappy issues and it does run pretty damn good. Still can't beat that Scotts for cut quality. People don't take care if their equipment. I just shake my head when I see some of the blades on these mowers. The customer might just bring it in to be serviced and ask me to just sharpen the blades. I take a look and half of the lifts are broken, some have had holes in them. So I have to call them and let them know it's gonna have to have new blades and some of them get mad and some are OK with it. But I'm not going to sharpen a broken blade. Are they mowing the grass or the driveway?

Only just seeing the new Timecutters and Titan models turn up in the UK, all of ours in the UK have Kohler engines fitted and the only one with the Briggs and Scrap'em (smallest in the range) and the Kawasaki engines are only seen on the pro models with the FX series engines. They do look a lot better than the previous models and have lots of handy tie down points on it for trailer transportation. Saying that your old Toro looks great for its age. We have in the past with the Timecutter and Titan mowers sold them to commercial owners and they have stood up to their abuse really well, but most commercial users we sell these to only cut grass around offices, small school fields, housing complexes and car park area's.

When it broke, it ended up getting hitting the blades and bending it up pretty bad. They refused to fix it, they saidI hit something, which I didn't. Taryl, I bought my 50" TimeCutter Max MyRide in June, also with the Kindasucki. The new bagger came in today ($1,000!). I've added a pedal-operated Grass Flap and an hour meter. Only problem so far was the bolts holding the seat to the adjuster rails weren't even finger tight from the factory. Damn near killed myself when the seat lifted up on me going down a hill. Toro didn't order the optional drain plugs from HydroGear, so I'm debating whether to try to service the pumps in the future by sucking the fluid out from the fill holes. Any thoughts on that?

I bought a Spyder motorcycle back in 2010. The dealer was a BRP platinum dealer. None of their techs were BRP certified. I had a warranty issue and guess who couldn't fix it. I ended up taking it two hours away to a dealer that had certified techs. Took the tech 30 minutes to diagnose and fix it. Some other things, "did you buy it here? We only service what we sell." Time from drop off to repair is an issue here. I've had people bring me mowers that the shop said it would be X amount of time before they could get to it. How comfortable is that Toro? My JD is a back breaker.

Care and maintenance is the issue, and the key to making stuff last! But the one thing that almost everyone avoids doing is reading the owner’s manuals, and the warranty booklet!
The other thing is to check out the servicing dealer in the first place, and what they service engines , transmissions and such! Many will chase away customers before investigating what is what!
The one thing I think everyone should do is take a course in Mechanics, even if they don’t do work themselves, knowing is key to do diagnostic procedures, and being able to describe an issue helps in fixing it for the technician!
Lets stop treating everything as disposable & start maintaining it!

I just pulled a timecutter 4200 out the dumpster. Just has a broken valve cover and bent rim. Well, that i can see, at least. Hopefully, i dont find any more damage. It looks like the guy the owned it must have been goin about 50mph and skidded off tge road and hit a tree, sideways. My main worry is the axle may be bent. I didnt know it was non serviceable and not even sure what that means. Hopefully i can get it apart if it is so i can try straightening it. I dont think its bent tho, honestly. If nothjng else tho, the battery was still good. Crazy the stuff people throw away. If anyone ever digs through my trash hoping to find something like that, they would never. I strip all the springs, belts, tires, bolts, nuts, washers, grease fittings, etc off. If youre a diy'er you gotta have "the bin" where you can go to grab bits and pieces that you need. If you had to go shopping or order online every little thing, youd never get anything done.

My brother just bought a used Toro T-bar walk behind-- with the sulky; with the Kawaski engine. It's a little weird, but I got the hang of it. It's a little too high geared for tall grass, so you have to feather the belts a lot-- and I don't really like that because I'm not sure if it's good for it or not; and you can only ride the sulky if your grass is low and you can go fast. It's an interesting setup.

    Hi Tarly and Co.
It's only classified by the customer as crap, because it costs so much to fix a simple problem.
I know its not mower related, but I watch Car Wizard on YT, and to change a $3 seal, costs $600+ on some cars 😢
If you remove the labour cost because you know how to fix it, it becomes a great machine for the price.
Should be interesting to see how they compare later on.
I tell my domestic customers to get it serviced every 2 years, as the service interval is normally 100hrs. 1 hr a week x 102 weeks over 2 years = approx 100hrs.
It also depends on how much they use it and the lawn size.
Commercial customers normally don't take notice of the 100hr servicing until it breaks down and asks for it to get serviced 🤦🤣
I also hear machinery running in my neighbourhood and wince when I hear noises like that, and then they normally get it running a few minutes later also 😂
I know of a company selling machinery that when it broke, told them to take it to another dealer that then decided not to fix non purchased warranty repairs as the rate for fixing it wasn't worth it if they hadn't sold it.
If you can't fix it, don't sell it.
