Wayfaring Stranger - filmed in Red Dead Redemption 2 | The Longest Johns

- Red Dead Redemption 2 is a superb and beautiful game, and we wanted to get closer to the action… so we put ourselves in it!! All footage (other than us) is captured in-game in our first foray into virtual production.
We had an idea of how we wanted to film a video for Wayfaring Stranger a while back, and this seemed like a perfect way to capture it.

This had NO RIGHT to go this hard!!!
Factual
Well hi
Wall hallo there
Your just too stubborn to admit their version is better than yours
@@daniel-johnson_damHe was complimenting this version. I don't know where you're getting this from
When he says "i'm going home to meet my savior" hit so hard.
Growing up in Tennessee, with family up in the Appalachians, I've heard this song all my life. Still haunting no matter how long a time.
have a good day! -from korea-
I'm a little bit sad that it's not Ashes, but I love Wayfaring Stranger too, so I'm still hyped.
(but I'd be very, very happy if an Ashes video were to happen too at some point ;) )
We have a great idea for it, but will be a challenging one to make. Will happen eventually though 🤞
@@thelongestjohns Knowing it's probably going to happen is very nice :) So thanks for that! Such a lovely song
@@thelongestjohns Really looking forward to it!
Can’t wait
I love ashes
Ashes is my all time favorite song so I couldn't agree more, I love this song a lot. it is my current favorite that I havnt quite played to death yet. I will be sooper excited when the vid for ashes comes out cheers
My Father died today. Devoted Christian his entire life. Just stumbled upon this song. Thank you so much.
Sorry to hear it, lost my Dad a few years ago, it’s surprising how many things occur in a day that reminds me of him . God bless you
@@bangalor1 Thank you sir. God bless you aswell.
calling it now. Someone's gonna make a RDR and/or RDR2 video using this cover...and it's gonna be fantastic.
Very very possible lol. I just hope they do use The Longest Johns cover
@@Captain_Jar_of_Dirt😊p
You have given me an idea
@@thatonetrashcan1681 if I have then I say you strike the iron while it's hot.
Pls, if anyone finds it put it here also :
Oh wow now thats gonna be good as an RDR2 Player i say just by the thumbnail its gonna be fire🔥🔥
*LYRICS - Wayfaring Stranger - The Longest Johns (Jack White)*
I am a poor wayfaring stranger,
traveling through this world of woe.
There is no sickness, toil or danger
in that fair land to which I go…
I'm goin' home to see my mother,
I'm goin' home, no more to roam.
I'm just goin' over Jordan,
I'm just goin' over home.
I know dark clouds will hover on me,
I know my path is rough and steep…
But golden fields lie out before me,
where weary eyes no more shall weep…
I'm goin' home to see my father,
I'm goin' home, no more to roam.
I'm just goin' over Jordan,
I'm just goin' over home.
I'll soon be free from every trial…
This form shall rest beneath the sun.
I'll drop the cross of self-denial,
and enter in that home with God…
I'm goin' home to meet my savior,
I'm goin' home, no more to roam.
I'm just goin' over Jordan,
I'm just goin' over home.
I'm goin' home to meet my savior,
I'm goin' home, no more to roam.
I'm just goin' over Jordan,
I'm just goin' over home.
THANK YOU!!!!
Beautiful version of a wonderful song. Love it.
This is my favourite cover of this song. Blasted it on repeat after buying the album. Love you guys!
I guess you’ve never heard Johnny Cash.
@@Handle35667I have listened to both and can now confidently say I personally prefer The Longest Johns cover. Johnny Cash’s cover is good in its own ways though
Damn! Wayfaring stranger is such an amazing song regardless who sings it. The best thing is, no matter who sings it, you can take away a different feeling from each version. Well done lads! Can't wait to see you live again
It's my 2nd favorite after Poor Man's Poison version
@@Handle35667 both are powerful and can bring me to tears but even I a huge Johnny Cash fan can honestly admit the longest johns is a bit better and more powerful
Imagine this song playing as Arthur Morgan is going through the last chapter of the game.
That would have been just as good!
That would be so powerful, the song fits him pretty well.
*Or with John returning to his ranch after killing Dutch, this song would fit in a very good context.*
I don't know if you guys know the story that's told in Red Dead 2 but genuinely, this song could be the anthem to that story. You have no idea how well it fit's Arthur's journey throughout that game!
As someone trained as a southern gospel vocalist, and an avid gamer (RDR2 being one of my most played games), I love everything about this song and this video. Good job, dudes.
That is gorgeously done! Odd how the lyrics are different in different versions. I did a 4-part version in choir in high school with lyrics from 1923, I think- published by a women's religious gathering. I admit, I missed the part at the end that always gave me chills: I'm going home to meet my Savior. He said He'd meet me when I come...
Folk songs get spread wide, and reinterpreted constantly. It'd be _more_ surprising if different versions had the same lyrics
As folk music always used to be spread orally, it gets chopped and changed over time. Even the sea shanties they made their name doing have several different versions per song.
The version I play and sing: "I'm going home to see my family ... I'm going home to sing with them ..."
This really isn't an easy song to totally nail, but this performance is off the chain. Haunting and soulful. Love it.
My favourite character is the intimidatingly large shrub behind Andy. You just know it's not a fan of campfires 😂.
A+ Virtual production!!
loooove the way JD and Robbie's voices sound together during that section with the two of them!! Robbie's voice on the high harmony is just... chef's kiss. a lovely blend
I tip my hat to you sir, ye who have the longest johns....I doubted.. .you proved your johns are longer ....good journey brother...
Stunning! My mom is transitioning through and I am performing this for her tomorrow she is still with us... thank you.
I am from the Netherlands and I am 63 years old. This brilliant song has been covered so many times and I like almost all of them. I think this version is extremely good. Folks, this is much better than the "music" read "garbage" that you generally hear in the charts. This one goes straight to my playlist. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Wow... I was so mesmerized by the song that it took me about a minute to notice that the background was not real :D
Beautifully done.
Imagine encountering the longest johns in the Northern forest or in the swamps around blackwater
I grad recently and my quote was “we can’t change what’s done we can only move on”
Man really just got up and walked all of the way home from the trail and left his comrades with the cows.
Absolutely fantastic rendition, coupled with the in-game atmosphere you've achieved with this production - really inspirational, GG folks, GG. Here's to hoping you get into RDR3, if...when. *tips hat*🤠
This is like the equivalent if singing danny boy with an american southern accent... and im totally here for it! Great work yall
Only much better than danny boy. The ending is outstanding.
Wow that harmony is savage guys. Great stuff
For anyone who is interested in knowing: Jordan often refers to the Ohio River. Who were "God's Redeemed keeping vigil" on the other side of the Ohio? Scottish Presbyterians who were often shot at and the victims of arson, for being conductors on the Underground Railroad: Rev. John Rankin, John Parker, Alexander Gilliland, Francis Huggins Pettijohn... There is real, passionate and riveting history behind this song.
If you want to go another layer deeper, the melody is the old German hymn "Ich bin ja nur ein Gast auf Erden", in english "I am only a guest on earth."
@@hantorfolezproductions4402 - I'm interested! I may have been born in Underground Railroad territory, but my ancestors are German... Is there anything more you can tell me about this hymn by any chance?
I can't find any references to such an origin for this song anywhere. Do you have a source?
Too late, buddy. I already moved to Amman, Jordan.
This is false as all hell.
My first exposure to this song was when No Evil used it for a ritual, and they made it sound quite a lot like this.
Awesome cover. The only other version of this song I have heard was Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson singing this as promotion for The Last of Us Part 2
Red Dead 2 let me escape from my addiction when the game came out. It was the last game I played on PC and I'm so glad I got to enjoy that game
The vibes in rdr2 are immaculate. I love just camping and hunting and not even playing the story for weeks at a time
Now let's see you do this for Hills of Mexico!
This is such a good version of the song.
This is perfect song for a lone time and a sip of tea. Thank you as always for outdoing yourselves. You guys are one of the best thing that ever happened in music.
P.S. I can even still hear Dave singing with you for some reason :) maybe it's just me who isn't used to see you without him.
I love red dead redemption. And in the movie 1917 a soilder sings this song. It’s so great to see them mix together. I am a fan and to see this for the first time today is mind blowing lol.
That was so good! And it looked great, both the cowboy lads and the world they visited. Nice work with the light and everything. Very
Now I'm gonna go send it to a friend who loves RDR2!
Forgot to mention that I love Andy's shirt. That must be mentioned every time he uses it..
Moment of silence for this great game, and for the equally brilliant film Cold mountain.
Most adequate! Now we shall wait for a longest Johns RDR2 DLC
Great Song Great Singer's 👍 🙏👏
Man I wish I had more fun playing RDR2. Quite Adequate music as always, Gentlemen
I should rewatch cold mountain, dang.
Woo0Hoo... Excellen..... Errr... I mean very quite totally adequate. Thanks guys. Yet another big winner...
I didn't dare hope it was this one. Oh my goodness, this might be my favourite thing ever on You Tube!
What a wonderful version. Having sung this myself in several different variations, I am so impressed with the gravity of this performance.
I woke up to this song playing yesterday and I've been Listening ever since
Wonderful
Had the privilege of hearing this live. Shook me. Best version of this song period.
I live in the Appalachian mountains and this song has been played an sang all my life
An ADEQUATE video! (Feed the algo-rythym)
Now all we need is rare mountain dew with the boys in a moonshine shack.
I love this song, and this is the BEST performance I've heard.
"Wayfaring Stranger" is a hauntingly beautiful folk and gospel song with a rich and somewhat mysterious history. Its origins are believed to lie in the early 19th century American South, with the melody possibly influenced by European folk traditions. The lyrics speak of a weary soul journeying through life's trials towards a heavenly home, making it a popular choice for funerals. The song gained significant attention during the American Civil War, when a dying Union soldier supposedly etched the words into the walls of Libby Prison. Its enduring themes of longing, sorrow, and hope have led to countless recordings by artists like Burl Ives, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris, cementing "Wayfaring Stranger" as an iconic piece of Americana.

Very classy all around, singing, production most adequate ❤
Oh, that's perfectly fantadequate.
This is so cool! I wish I had even an inkling of the knowledge it must’ve taken to make this.
Without a doubt, the best version I have heard of this song!
Haha! Amazingly well done! Got really worried when JD walked on the train tracks... Dunno what I expected to happen :'D
This was as unexpected as it gets but oh my was it incredible. The lighting was immaculate, it looks and sounds so good!!
This is great. It was one of my dad's favourite songs. He would have liked this.
Brilliant rendition! I love that you guys are exploring American gospel standards.
So I have a question. We go camping a lot with my friends and we always had one guitar and sang songs together. But I got a banjo myself recently and we quickly found out that I can't hear the guitar and my mate playing the guitar can't hear the banjo. Any tips so we can both enjoy the full sound of everything other than just sitting really close to each other? Though I assume that is indeed the only realistic solution
One of you just needs to play while standing on your head. This will put the instruments on the same plane as the other person's head, leading to less instrumental auditory cancellation.
Though I am sorry that I don't have an actual piece of advice for you.
This has to be my favourite song. I wasnt fussy on the original but love this version!
Hype!!
Great cover and awesome game! Love me some rootin tootin cowboy shootin
aww man wish ya'll could make it out to Tombstone AZ the last weekend in July. there having a live RDR event at he old ghost town. very excited.
This is truly awesome. Great song, and proves how great rdr2 is.
Jonny Cash does a great, haunting version of this song.
The original melody was composed by Johann Georg Ebeling and lyrics written by Paul Gerhardt in 1666 in Germany as "Ich bin ja nur ein Gast auf Erden". The song is based on Psalm 39:12 and Psalm 119:19 [4] [5]
The vibes are SUBLIME
Love it. Weird seeing the guys in hats though, but i'm kind of digging it
Love this version, close your eyes and listen, it paints a brilliant picture, fantastic voices❤❤❤❤
Beautiful.
This is one of my favorite songs ever written. I have chills running so hard up and down my back that I can feel it in my freaking bones. Tears rolling down my face.
A most adequate stomp indeed!
Fantastic! Wow.
"I'm just going over home" man that hits hard
This is a great version of the song 👩🏻🏫👏🏻🥰‼️ Don’t know anything about Red Dead Redemption 2 though.
Incredibly brilliant again. Well done Abbie & JD for putting this together. Your skills know no bounds.😁😍
aboslutely stunning production quality, would love to see more like these but they seem like they must be a pain in the ass to make.
I want them to cover There is a Time next, its the same melody, but just a little faster.
All songs must go this heard- yes!!!
You guys really make amazing songs and videos. Keep it up !
I just love your harmony. I subscribed ♥️
Thank you for sharing this. One of my favorite songs.
Fabulous rendition of a great song, made even better with the in-game atmospherics.
Beautiful. The song alone would have been worth it but this video is so well done! You guys are killing it, keep up the awesome work!!
Thanks for taking the time to try new things. This is just beautiful, and I very much look forward to what you will offer us in the future.
This song has been getting me through some things ever since I came across this cover. Bless you lads
wooow, incredible, thanks
I love the song and particularly your rendition.
now that I know you guys do this I still have to request either “Heavy Hands” or “White Rider” from Where the Water Tastes like Wine
love ya music ❤
Yes!
Another "Where the Water Tastes Like Wine"
Heavy Hands is such a great song
@@nairocamilo honestly the whole soundtrack is just amazjnng
Absolutely this ☝☝... all the vagrant songs (especially southwest & deep south) have been favorites to listen to as I play the game, but it's undeniable how good Heavy Hands or White Rider is
@@glarefall I haven't actually gotten around to playing the game, but I do love the soundtrack (my favorite vagrant songs are the midwest and northwest ones).
We promised to sing this and Crossing The Bar" for my Dad's funeral when his Time comes.
This is just incredible, on so many levels.
This song was featured on KXCI 91.3 in Tucson
Best version of this song I've ever heard! !! (I've heard at least twenty bands cover this.) Thank you for sharing with us!!!
I love every bit of it!
Love this song thanks guys
Haunting
Absolutly adequate ❤
I love the western stuff y’all do. Your Hills of Mexico cover might be my favorite song ever! Keep it up boys.
Add on: You should do some southern folk songs! Johnny Boys Bones comes to mind.
This hits so hard
This is so adequate! You've totally changed how I see and hear WS, and it's long been one of my favorites. 🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
