Once again Top Shelf 12 Ft. Saw them back in 77. Next week they are playing 50th Anniversary tour. 10 min down the road up here in eastern Canada ♪♫♪♫♪
2:30 - absolutely. There are songs I've heard thousands of times and don't know the lyrics. Especially Yes songs! I play along with my left hand all the time, and my right hand if I can do it. Always. I think the Doobies were one of the first bands to extensively tour with "fragile" 335's, so I think you are spot on with the gear. Great lesson and I learned many things: delay settings, playing the 3 string power chords instead of just a 2 string 5 chord, that C7 chord, the little lead in lines, and of course the solo. Thanks!
Yesterday I commented on your LISTEN TO THE MUSIC tutorial & wrote how much I love the Doobies. And today I find u posted a new lesson on CG. Happy birthday to me. (it really is my bday) Thank you!
That’s right the Doobies were on WH. I’d forgotten that. I remember the guys got tickets to the concert or something. when it first aired in the late-seventies I remember thinking, Raj, Rerun & Dwayne didn’t strike me as Doobie fans. Earth Wind & Fire or Kool & The Gang seemed more like their flavor. Hee hee. But really the band did defy genres
I remember so clearly, at a 1974 outdoor 4th of July celebration held in a place called Dormont Pa. where I grew up, a local cover band playing this song note for note perfect without any of their instruments going through their eight channel PA system, other than drums, keyboards and vocals. They went from this song, to Steely Dan's "Reelin' In The Years" to the Made In Japan version of Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water" to The Beach Boys "Sail On Sailor". Each and every song out of about a 15 plus song set list was performed absolutely flawlessly, vocals included. I knew their rythmn guitarist who lived a few doors down the street from our house, and I asked how they'd all gotten so good at their instruments and performing as a group. He told me they all took music lessons and had structured rehearsal sessions. These were high school guys. They were too young to play in bars, but they actually could make pretty good money back then playing top 40 at Holiday Inns, parties, and so on. By the way, that rythmn guitarist used a 1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom through a Fender Bandmaster amp into a 2x15 cabinet loaded with SROs. Loud. Take lessons.
You always pick songs I really want to Learn, and Man I'm a Massive DOOBIE BROTHERS FAN!! I was so Blessed to EXPERIENCE them in Little Rock, Arkansas, on the STAMPEDE TOUR, so Michael McDonald and Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter had joined the Band on this Album and Tour, then they brought The Tower Of Power Horn Section along with them, Invited Rufus and Chaka Khan to come over from Memphis and Lend Back-Up Vocals, and Let me tell you It was One BIG PARTY. They have such A Positive Infectious Groove-Vibe LIVE!! I truly Wished they'd had Digital Film and Audio Back then - It was REALLY A SPECTACULAR SHOW!!❤
Me too, on the focusing on the Guitar, but I try to sing, so I Also Pay Attention to the Lyrics. I work at a 7-11, and I have to go in The Vault (Cooler) and Stock, usually for a couple of hours and I take a Bluetooth Speaker, I Use PANDORA, which I Love, and I have a Huge DOOBIE BROTHERS PLAYLIST, that I often use. It's Upbeat, which helps me work and actually Enjoy It. I have most of their albums on it, too!!! The 335 Sounds Perfect for it. I think Patrick Simmons quite often employed a 335....
Love it great kickass guitar players - legit music writing you wait for the riffs\ hooks --- Nice gear great job - more delay slap !! 😝👍 Edit :: Same, never listen to lyrics myself always wrong but your compelled to guitars instruments automatically so my bad that's what it is ....
Apparently Tom Johnston didn't even know it was a real place, he just passed through it one day for a gig in San Antonio and the name stuck in his head. He actually had no idea the town actually existed until his cabdriver told him about it
vintage 335 thru a 63' bassman.... can I get more or less the same sound with a Squier Sonic and a battery powered Joyo practice amp? (*w/ new batteries)
Awesome! Checked it out already, rewatching now. I’ll get there. Hate to ask, but someone as good as 12 foot chain could really do justice to Balinese. Nobody ever teaches it. Cool song, good groove, tasty licks and short and sweet. Just a thought. Great lessons, Great channel! Thanks.
On the China Grove Location, Tom Johnston, he'd seen the Name via a Tour Bus, if I got the Story correct, it Inspired the Song, but I think he forgot it was a real place as well - something like that... , I Listened to a History of them on PANDORA and they talked about it....
Great lesson again. I've been subscribed to you over 12 months. Would like to join patreon and DL your tabs/Guitar pro files for many of your lessons. But I don't understand your patreon membership options. Appears to be only 3 options - Clapton, Beck or Page. I don't want any of those 3. I mainly want your other stuff, Stones, Doobies, Petty, Joe Walsh etc etc. How do I join your patreon to get those??? Your patreon site does not explain
Lol, that's just the names. The base level $5/mo is just called clapton. You have access to all tabs for all artists. So choose whatever level you want, you get access to everything I have posted
@@12footchain OK thanks - but it's not idiot proof Doug. It doesn't say that anywhere on your patreon site so punters don't know what the deal is. I suggest you make it very clear on the patreon site that Clapton option gives access to all your lessons/ tabs/guitar pro files :)
Without you even knowing, the ES you use is on point, lol. Pat Simmons, the Doobie Brothers' rhythm guitarist, also used to play a red ES335 with small block inlays ua-cam.com/video/MCpI645baoU/v-deo.html
very nice...i'll practice it.....BUT...the Dooby brothers were just tooo much "middle of the road " for me, even back then...and now...cheers and thx....
Thank you for taking the time to teach "China Grove", a song that many of us grew up listening to in our teen years.
No comment other than, that was perfect. Note for note. Phrasing in the solo was beautiful.

Top notch lesson. Thanks
I drove through China Grove a couple of weeks ago. You wouldn’t know it was anything without the sign.
Can't believe they were on an episode of " Whats Happening " t.v. show. That was super cool though!

Yeah man,re run and the boys were gonna " bootleg " the concert, but got busted, man.
Lol, I remember that. Rerun was going in with a tape recorder. All it captures was the sound of him snacking!😂
Man, what a great video. Little things I have been missing in this. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!

Always enjoy your videos! Very helpful! Thank you!
By far the best lesson on YT. In fact, most of your lessons are top of the (Marshall) stack.
thanks man - much appreciated

Very well done. It remember me a lot of souvenirs.
What a lot of fun to learn this song, I hope🙂
Ha ha. I relate 100% to your comment about lyrics. It can be years before I hear them in enough detail to know what the song is all about :)
Great lesson man great song thanks

Great lesson. Please Mister Guitar Man please consider, Old Man Down the Road by😃 Fogerty?
What a spectacularly good guitar lesson! Thank you, you made my morning. :-)
I didn't realize it was a real place till I had to mail out something to the location when I worked at a company a few years ago. 😂
Apparently Tom Johnston didn't even know it was a real place, he just passed through it one day for a gig in San Antonio and the name stuck in his head. He actually had no idea the town actually existed until his cabdriver told him about it

When the gossip gets to flyin , they ain't lying. Loves the story about the lyrics.😂
Love what you do. Awesome job as usual. I believe TJ played an SG

I think we all could stand a little PEACE right now. How about all the guitars of Get Together - The Youngbloods
On the China Grove Location, Tom Johnston, he'd seen the Name via a Tour Bus, if I got the Story correct, it Inspired the Song, but I think he forgot it was a real place as well - something like that... , I Listened to a History of them on PANDORA and they talked about it....
LOL. I never know the lyrics, either, but my wife can sing along with everything, while being clueless about the guitar.
Maybe.... , " Rockin' Down The Highway ", someday.... ?
How are you getting the backing tracks? Is there a site or app to purchase them or download them?

ok thanks for the feedback, I added some text on the tier components to try to clarify
Tom Johnson plays a PRS Custom 24 fairly often, if that matters😂
Thanks!
Thank you!
That C#m in the theme riff isn't right.
😂 that sounds so familiar about tuning into the guitar and missing the lyrics!
What are these “lyrics” you speak of?
Without you even knowing, the ES you use is on point, lol. Pat Simmons, the Doobie Brothers' rhythm guitarist, also used to play a red ES335 with small block inlays ua-cam.com/video/MCpI645baoU/v-deo.html
Very good. only you use too much delay.
very nice...i'll practice it.....BUT...the Dooby brothers were just tooo much "middle of the road " for me, even back then...and now...cheers and thx....
Very close. There’s a few nuances missing 👍🏻
How much of this is cliche versus original melody? Heavy wicka wacka. Does Johnston even know what pentatonic means?
