@karolm4045 personally, While I enjoy some jazz.... I don't think adding his jazz "flavor" really helped the Doobies that much. At the time, it added a twist of "pop" that it was lacking I guess.... but to me the Doobies represented the "California rock" style, along with the still popular country rock sound. It was a combo unique to them and the Eagles. When they started going jazzy.... I think that it was a move to towards a more "popish" sound. Let's face it.... you got to pay the bills. AND if that means a more "pop" sound to sell records, then that's what you do. I, on the other hand, pretty much was developing my own likes and love affair with the blues! I guess we all evolve at our own rates!
Second the shout out on their Bass Player. Doobies we’re in the same league as Steely Dan as far as incredible Musicians and Talent. Blessed I grew up in the 60s & 70s. The Bands were real musicians. A great time in America ❤️🇺🇸
Actually, Bassist Tiran Porter joined on the Toulouse Street album, Drummer Keith Knudsen joined on the Stampede album (he toured on the Vices tour prior). Still a classic lineup.
These 2 songs were the standards at our Friday high school dances after the football games, there was nothing like rocking out and letting it go. Such great times I sure miss them😊👍
Hilarious- he’s wearing it like a 65-year old mensch in a NY hotel looking for her poodle who escaped in the lobby. Meanwhile the bassist looks like he’s going skiing.
If you need to just feel happy, listen to these songs. And the band still rocks. They're touring this summer, new album coming out. I'll also never understand why Tom Johnston isn't in any conversation of the best front men, lead singers/guitar player from the 70's (and his voice is still incredible.) The most underrated lead singer/song writer from any band.
I was a teenage fan of rock music all through the 1970s, and this lineup of the Brothers was a big part of it. China Grove, Listen To The Music, Long Train Running were 3 of my favorite songs. Then at the age of around 30, I began joining bands around Seattle playing electric bass. I thought I knew who my influences were, but the style I developed had elements that were familiar to me although I was unaware of it's origin. At some point I heard one of these old Doobie Brothers songs and it hit me. It was the Doobs' Tiran Porter. I was laying down lines to original songs that reminded me of his style, and I didn't even know his name at that point. I do now, and I will never forget his name as long as I live.
I saw them twice, first one Tom Johnson was singing lead and it was incredible, second time Mike Macdonald was singing and i hated the change the band had become. Tom Johnson Rocked!!!
Nice man, I remember tommy giving an interview recently talking ab his exit which was mostly due to health reasons but he mentioned the doobies changed their sound after he left and wasn't sure where he fit in... this is a classic example of old school version and I def prefer
End result is legend. Anyone that experienced these guys in this , their rise to prominence, know there will never be another era like it in the history of popular music. It's like what can we do better than what was put out in the 60's...well, they did it, and all the other great musical acts in this era.
My high school years were from 1974 - 1978. The Doobie Brothers were the sound track to those years. My band (Cultural Revival) played "China Grove", l played rhythm/lead guitar. Though we were a CCR cover band we did some rockers from that time and "CG" was one we did at every gig. 🌎☮️♥️🎼🎶🎵🇺🇸
I played rock in a local band in the mid 70s. This was one of the first tunes our band leader wrote up for us. We enjoyed playing a lot of their music.
Hey, this video is exactly 7:37, and I believe that 3 and 7 are God's favorite numbers, and everything with those numbers together, seems to be blessed. And I notice that Tom Johnston looks like he's lost weight in this video, rather sucked up looking, but he was going through a drug period too, so. It ages people, or they lose weight. He looks different in this one, than the concert they did from two years before in 1972. Tom looked healthy and younger in that one. Thankfully, Tom got the help he needed along the way, and he's still a performer, he looks comfortable, healthy and strong now. ***** Check out their group picture from the early days of Doobies, and see how Tom has the long thick wavy hair, and the adorable boyish look on his face! (No mustache yet). He looked happy and without a care.
The Doobie's and the 70's will never be repeated.
One of the best bands of the 20th Century.
I must agree but I also like Steely Dan and that's who the Doobie Brothers took their style from ..
The most underrated bass player in Rock & Roll, his groove was always so tastefully done.
And always "rock solid!!!!
Tyran also played guite a bit of guitar on album. Definitely one of my influences on bass early on.
Ty is a great bass player and one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
Don't know about under-rated🤔 What'd He(identify the player) before & after the DOOBIES? McDonald went solo... GREAT HITS!!! 🎶
Tiran Porter is the best!
Take me back to 1974…ASAP!!! Those were the days 🤙🏼
That’s music. Simple grooving music. I love it. Been listening since 1972.
Absolutely
Couldn't have said it better myself.👍👍
Same rock on peace out
You're not alone!
TIRAN PORTER IS MY PERSONAL FAVORITE BASS PLAYER IN LIFE
You hear those guitar chords, you KNOW what you are about to hear! One of the all-time great songs performed by the band that made it famous.
I love the Doobie brothers, "pre- Michael McDonald" of course. 70s rocked!!
The best ! Skunk Baxter really brought them along too!
pre- Michael McDonald -- YES!
But Micheal McDonald added to their group and, then he went solo.

@arthurshingler2025 well my favorite is "jesus is just alright with me."
These songs never get old

One of the great bands of the 70s.
one of those 70s bands that can fill a full concert play list with nothing but hits......
Their sound was basic, but masterful. They could find a groove, and before you knew it, you were relaxing in it like a hammock in summertime.
Ri seen them in Seattle Washington at the paramount theater after I got home from the service..they rocked over in Vietnam
lol perfect description
True gas from the 70's. Remember listening to this sitting at the pool during the summers. What memories these songs are.
Sure wish there was some of this in the world today
THe Doobies always had great bass lines.
The early line-ups of Doobie Brothers crushed the later line-ups.
Amen...the original line up is The Doobie Brothers
👍
Yeah, I Like the ORIGINAL line up of 'Doobies'. So Damn Cool during that period...
you're obviously not a musician
Actually, Bassist Tiran Porter joined on the Toulouse Street album, Drummer Keith Knudsen joined on the Stampede album (he toured on the Vices tour prior). Still a classic lineup.
This song got me through several days in high school. Love it!
These 2 songs were the standards at our Friday high school dances after the football games, there was nothing like rocking out and letting it go. Such great times I sure miss them😊👍
Not everyday you see 2 drummers but you never see one of them wearing a fur coat while playing. Gotta love the 70's.
Dude u get comment of the year .lol he is wearing a fur coat
Hilarious- he’s wearing it like a 65-year old mensch in a NY hotel looking for her poodle who escaped in the lobby.
Meanwhile the bassist looks like he’s going skiing.
Nearly missed it..luv it..thanks..🇨🇦
RIP John Hartman.
@@joeimbesi5361And also Mike Hossack.
One of my all time favorite bands . They were superb musically and good fellas who'd give you the shirts of their backs
Growing Up, The Doobies were *All Over* the Local Radio dial..
The Doobie Brothers are *ICONIC* Music from the 1970s into the 1980s
Tom Johnstone a certified R&R star
Hey, the 1970s just called....because it couldn't text!
These guys did some outstanding songs.
Just realized how much China Grove has a Steppenwolf, Born To Be Wild feel to it, probably inspired Johnston.
What a bass line!
Used to love them in '74, still love them now.
I was in diapers when this was recorded.
This band is in my soul.
If you need to just feel happy, listen to these songs. And the band still rocks. They're touring this summer, new album coming out. One of my favorite vocalists for sure!
Saw them in concert 1973...they blew the roof off..still listening almost 50 years later

Listen To The Music has one of the ten best bass lines in all of music. That is one I had fun playing. Great rhythmic feel.
I saw them twice, first one Tom Johnson was singing lead and it was incredible, second time Mike Macdonald was singing and i hated the change the band had become. Tom Johnson Rocked!!!
There still great inconcert seen them 2 years ago sound the same as you remembered them .great show .
Two Doobies' songs that almost have to be tracked one after the other at any tailgate party!!

Love this! That it’s live, the ad libs and Tom Johnston looks healthy and like a God here. Simply wonderful!
Memories from high school, good times!
Saw the Doobie Brothers in 74 at Pima College in Tucson, Az. Edgar Winter did Frankenstein!
Daaayum! That’s live! It doesn’t get much tighter than that ladies and gentlemen.
Love this lineup, man.
Nice man, I remember tommy giving an interview recently talking ab his exit which was mostly due to health reasons but he mentioned the doobies changed their sound after he left and wasn't sure where he fit in... this is a classic example of old school version and I def prefer
Groovy music Doobie brothers❤️
Awesome band.

The original lineup 🔥
Not quite original, as Tiran replaced Dave Sjogren on the Toulouse Street album. The band also did not have two drummers initially.
@@ClintonWatrin-sv8lm 👍🌞🍊
One of the greatest songs ever from any band other than the Doobie Brothers
Love Tirans jumper - love his bass playing too.
back when the joint you were smoking was so full of seeds your velour shirt was full of burn holes

BEAUTIFULLY DONE. NICE AND TIGHT.
Perfection! I Love how He sang the 'Looorrrddd...' part in the adlibs...
Always loved the Doob's
The most underrated band ever
Thanks for the wonderful music, I saw Wilko play with the late great Ian Drury and the Blockheads in The Town And Country Club 2 in 1990 fantastic.
Saw the doobies at the WACA Perth Australia. In the late 1970,s. Music for the soul

Brilliant band. 70's was full of great music ❤❤❤
I played rock in a local band in the mid 70s. This was one of the first tunes our band leader wrote up for us. We enjoyed playing a lot of their music.
We were both merciful and merciless with regards to this lovely music. Struck chords with all of us.
The Doobies painted great images...I would lie back and visualise/relive the the people places and moments they created
Old Grey Whistle Test BBC tv studios, yep, went right out and bought the album.
His live vocals are something!
Tom Johnston is an amazing singer
That was music!
Love these guys! Raw talent.
Still sounds great.
Love Patrick Simmons addition of this rendition!
