Bobby Helm's was a neighbor of mine when I was a kid and later in my life Bobby opened a nightclub that I used to go to, The club was at 34th and Arlington Ave in Indianapolis
@12footchain I was very young, this would have been around 1959 or 60, I was born in 53, I mostly remember him always being gone so I assume he was on the road playing his music, but later when he opened the Bobby Helm's club he always greeted me very friendly, telling me he remembers me but I don't think he really did he was just a very nice man
I'm from Martinsville... I remember when Bobby lived out on rte 252..Martinsville..... either he bought/rented a house from Neuman a builder at that time... Bobby happens to be buried at Hillsdale cemetery Martinsville... across from my Dad/Mom
I've been playing since I was 11, and I'm 53 now. I wanted to learn because my dad was an amazing guitar player, not because I truly loved it. I've put it down and picked it up a lot over the years, so I'm intermediate at best. I've always loved this song. You've inspired me to learn it! I'll probably be ready to play it next Christmas. Great tutorial, thank you very much!! ❤
Harold Bradley was reportedly on the session along with Hank. I never liked the tune but was enthralled by the gorgeous , sparkly clean tones of the lead guitar.
On the original 1957 recording, Hank Garland would've been playing his Gibson Byrdland with the Charlie Christian pickup at the neck and the P-90 pickup at the bridge. Incase anyone was curious.
There use to be a TV program back in the 60's called " Here Come The 70's " It promoted the idea that most people would fly around with jet packs , mono rail trains would replace cars ... Nothing much has changed except for cell phones , home computers . A toaster is still a toaster . Great lessons ..., please do some Robin Trower mid 1970's ... " Caledonia " " Lady Love " more . 🇺🇸🇨🇦🎸🔊🔊🔊🔊✨🎬
Awesome! I learned to appreciate the depth and complexity of this tune that I've always loved. Far too complex for me to actually comprehend, but quite impressive.
I've always been anamored of the guitar work on that song, the epitome of the "tasty lick". Thanks for breaking it down, though I doubt I have the patience to break out of my folk/blues rock private Idaho to learn all that.
Merry Christmas Doug & everyone. From Les's hometown. The Mrs. heard me learning Wildflowers & said "that sounds beautiful" ! (Ovation acoustic) Bonus...I usually get -" it's too loud". Then i just repeat what i saw on the old 80's band Autograph, bumper stickers (remember those, lol ?) "If it's too loud - you're too old" & she is 5 years younger than me. 🙂
He could've played a Gibson Byrdland or Gibson L-7 perhaps? Byrdland is a story in itself. Hank Garland is a sad story but he left us some great music! Please check out the Elvis songs he played on!
I'm pausing and playing. So you first hit that A aug (pause) "Ah. The Beatles" I say to myself. (play) 20 seconds later you say "John Lennon played that all over the place". "Yes!" I shout at the screen". Virtual fist bump.
Nice! But way too complicated for me to learn. I am an ok rock, metal , and country guitar player, but this is chet atkins style jazz for advanced players. You even have the same guitar as his. How did these early electric guitarists have such extensive chordeology?✨
@12footchain thank you! I just stumbled on your channel for the first time. I must have missed that as I was checking you out while trying to catch some of the NFL game at the same time. When I get time, I will be checking out your channel.

No way! Wow great story. Did you have any contact with him growing up?

@sparky971 glad you had that experience with him. Thanks for sharing

So part of indiana was bob living in
Perfect lesson. Way to dumb it down for a truly intermediate guitar player without being too monotonous. Keep up the good work and thanks.
Nice tutorial. I used to play guitar for Bobby. His son Rob was our drummer. This was back in Martinsville, Indiana. Good times.
Wow that's exciting!

Recorded @'Bradley's Barn' ,right?

Thanks. Merry Xmas.
Nice, you nailed it.

Great chords to what you think is a simple little song , Great
Augmented! the forgotten go to! yeah Swing players are crazy good. The Studio guy that did the Beverly Hillbillies was outstanding

Great Video 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Excellent. Thanks
Thank you for doing this. I have always liked it for the guitar parts, but didn’t realize how clever it was. Those session guys eh? 😁

Couldn't have been played on a 335 originally since it hadn't been introduced yet.
you are great
Thank you!
A blessed Christmas to you all ,and to all a good night!!!! Merry Christmas everybody!!!!!!!!
Doesn’t seem to be a Guitar Pro file on this one yet. Great Lesson !
Yeah not yet. Soon
Excellent lesson. Thank you for working this song out. Merry Christmas!
so was hank garland considered a monster or was he just your "regular pro" guitar player?
He was a monster he was a great player. He played many classic lick,s on hit records. He was world class class. The best to you 😊😊😊😊😮😮😮😮🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤Paul.
Good lesson.
I can’t enter the give away because I’m not a US resident 😢
Anyway Rock on. 🎉

All I want for Christmas is a 335 ….hmpf , well , not this year😊
Is that a 335 or a 330, I thought the 335 was a simi hollow guitar.
It's a 335. And yes, semi hollow
I'm pausing and playing. So you first hit that A aug (pause) "Ah. The Beatles" I say to myself. (play) 20 seconds later you say "John Lennon played that all over the place". "Yes!" I shout at the screen". Virtual fist bump.

👌👌👌
G.E. Smith is a great guitarist
In trying to play this along with the Helms recording, somehow, the guitar must be retuned. I could not get it exactly right, so I gave up.
3 minutes in, when exactly are you going to teach us?
2x helps when you're in a hurry.
Literally tell you within the first minute you can use the chapters to jump to wherever you want

There actually is a company called Jetson, and they make flying cars, so.....
🙂👍🥃
I don't think they had overdubbing in 1957
Hmmm I always thought it was Les Paul.
