The legendary A Nightmare on Elm Street film franchise, created by director Wes Craven, set a new standard for surreal, nightmare horror. That’s mostly thanks to its star, played by Robert Englund: Freddy Krueger. The bastard son of a hundred maniacs, Freddy Krueger kills his victims in their dreams, leading to some extremely creepy deaths and buckets of blood and gore. The Springwood Slasher made his reputation as a mortal man, terrorizing the kids of Elm Street with his sinister bladed Freddy Krueger glove. But there wouldn’t be Nightmare on Elm Street movies about a standard mortal serial killer, so Freddy got a major power upgrade after he was killed by the vengeful parents of his victims. The Dream Demons brought him back to life, and gave him the power to kill teenagers in their sleep. That’s the premise of the first Nightmare on Elm Street film, a creepy, scary slasher film by director Wes Craver. Robert Englund brings a maniacal edge to the gory Freddy Krueger rampage, and his first Nightmare on Elm Street movie would be followed by many more Freddy Krueger Nightmare on Elm Street Sequels.
In A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: The Dream Child, Freddy Krueger possesses the body of a teenager named Jesse, who goes on a killing spree in Freddy’s image. Freddy is destroyed by the power of love, but he would return in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. There, he’s killed by burying his bones on holy ground, but the gory rampage would continue with A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. After he’s killed by a simple nursery rhyme, Freddy Krueger returns in A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. In this one, he’s killed by an evil, creepy kid who sucks the souls out of Freddy Krueger’s body and turns him back into an infant. Freddy Krueger returns for Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, which actually kills Freddy Krueger for a long time. However, Freddy would return in Freddy vs. Jason, where Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees fight. The Freddy Jason fight is definitely a highlight of the movie, but probably not for Freddy, since he loses and gets his head sliced off by a machete.
Finally, we’ve come to Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, which isn’t technically Freddy Krueger. Instead, it’s a supernatural demon who takes the form of Freddy, who is just a classic horror movie slasher in the world of New Nightmare. Still, if you want to take him down, your best bet is to trap him in an oven, Hansel and Gretel style. In the Nightmare on Elm Street remake from 2010, it wasn’t actually all that difficult to kill Freddy Krueger. You just have to pull Freddy Krueger out of the Dream World and into reality, then you can kick his ass. Time will tell if we ever see another Nightmare on Elm Street sequel, but if we do, I’m sure the enterprising heroes and heroines will find some other clever solution to the question of how to kill Freddy Krueger.

Whenever kids talked about him in elementary school, I imagined this ordinary guy with a knife. Not a man with third and fourth degree burns all over his body, a fedora, and claws.
If you managed to remove his gloved hand and stab him in the heart with it, wouldn't that create a paradox? He'd die from the wound because his arm is real, but to survive he'd have to believe his arm wasn't real (i.e he isn't real), and therefore remain dead?

I remember a comic mini-series dealt with Freddy being unable to kill a little girl (like 7 or 8) because while she believed in him, she also was smart enough to understand that he was only a threat if she allowed him to be. Thus, he had no power against her.
Okay, I feel the need to clear a few things up regarding this one:
1. The whole sleep/dream deprivation routine: Don't bother. Krueger is an arch-master in this brand of siege warfare. The dream suppressants and caffeine is just going to act as a stopgap measure, buying you days AT BEST, and at worst, sets you up later on for an uncontrolled sleep that catches you by surprise. By the time you figure out you're dreaming, you've already fallen for his setup, and thanks to the chemical "help", you're too worn out for adrenaline to shock you awake.
2. While you're at it, don't bother trying to pull Freddy into the waking world. Plenty of reasons for this one, not the least of which being the difficulty in it. This plan relies on managing to close the distance enough to get a hold of him AND hold on long enough to wake up. Seriously, you might as well try to fight a lion wearing just a straitjacket soaked in dry rub seasoning. Even if you manage this, you've accomplished nothing. In the real world, he's already dead. All you're doing is creating a physical manifestation for him to control, effectively making the problem worse. Sure, it'll take damage, and you can even "kill" the manifestation, but Freddy himself isn't weakened one bit. At best, he's disoriented for a bit. While this one CAN lead to temporary success, what's doing the work is denying him your fear by confronting, and you can do that in the dream world just as easily.
3. Fighting Freddy in the dream world: last ditch measure only. You may be able to go toe-to-toe with him for a bit, but that's only if you can keep Freddy occupied long enough to keep him from locking in on what drives your fears. He can turn the tables too quickly on you, because it may be your mental turf, but you're playing by his rules. If it can buy you enough time to wake up, fine. Otherwise, he knows he's fighting a war of attrition, and only one of you can tire out. Hint: it's not him.
So, you can't avoid him, and fighting him is either going to be a waste of energy or a delaying measure, so what? Roll over and die? Fuck that. There's a way you kill Freddy, and no one's even figured it out. You ready for this? Here it is:
BURN SPRINGWOOD TO THE GROUND.
Freddy's reliant upon fear; it's what allows him to kill from within dreams, but you know what's necessary for fear to exist? Knowledge that the thing you fear existed.
There's still people who remember the Springwood Slasher, and what kind of horror he could create. You'll have to get rid of them. By my estimates (and yes, I did some rough calculations based off data from the last movie that wasn't a remake, a meta-movie, or a what-if scenario), there's about 5500 psychotic residents who have to die. You don't necessarily have to kill them, but it's either that or figure out some way that they can no longer remember, and let's face it: between the risk of them regaining their memories somehow or rediscovering what you made them forget, killing them would definitely be the more expedient choice, and considering the state the surviving adults were in, probably a mercy.
After that, you still have Springwood itself. You'll have to go Temujin on this town; not one brick left standing on another. It's the only way to be sure Freddy's story dies. There's too much history in that town, and too much possibility that someone might have left something behind about those days. Any building that was already built as late as 1984 (when the series started) needs to be, at least, a pile of rubble. Preferably a smoking crater. The asylum, the graveyards, and the junkyard where his remains were buried too, considering they might not reside within city limits. Anything that has names attached to it has to go.
After that, wipe the local records. News stories from the killings, the trial, Krueger's execution, and the slayings from when he was already dead, they all have to disappear. I doubt this one made national news, considering the time frame it occurred and the acquittal, but there's definitely local sources, and they need to be silenced. This one might be the toughest of the three to accomplish, what with the proliferation of information these days.
Now, you might be wondering how this would kill Freddy, and directly, it wouldn't. What it WOULD do, though, is ensure that that bastard son of a hundred maniacs couldn't kill any more, as no one would remember him enough to fear him. He wouldn't have enough power to kill anyone, and as time continued marching on, he's just grow weaker, until he couldn't even manifest in a dream. If you want to simply stop him from killing you, it's overkill, but if you want to end the threat permanently, this is how you'd do it.
Sooo this is hella late butttt the ONLY fault in this logic is that the person/group getting rid of anything to do with Freddy would also have to die

But I believe, in order to truly kill freddy, you'd have to destroy every evidence there is about him and kill every single innocent person that has heard about freddy. Then destroy him, destroy everyone that helped you and then yourself.

I think it's the original 3 Dream Demons that are supposed to be eternal, while Freddy himself is only benefiting from their power and immortality for as long as they are bonded together. I think severing the link between Freddy and his demons would do the job.

A really creepy dream i had was that i was set in the 80s or something and my dream friend was wearing a weird mask but then he took it off and he said he felt sick. THEN HE BARFED OUT OF HIS EYES AND MOUTH. I then asked what is wrong with you and he said " looks can be deceiving and then pull his face up which turned out to be a mask and under the mask it was Freddy krueger. then i woke up but still it was so scary

Freddy’s pool of victims was very specific. He originally only attacked the children of the parents who killed him (who coincidentally all still lived in the same neighborhood) even in dream warriors the children suffering nightmares in the mental hospital were descended from the parents who originally killed Freddy. In dream master Freddy was using Kristen and her ability to pull others into her dreams to reach her friends (because the three surviving children from dream warriors were his last available victims) he kills them all in quick succession but not before he forced Kristen to pull Alice into her dream and pass her ability onto her. Alice unknowingly uses this ability she has no control over to pull her friends into his realm thus getting them killed. The whole rhyming thing at the end of that film is basically her using her subconscious to cut Freddy off from her mind and her abilities. Then in dream child the sealed off Freddy finds a workaround by using the unborn child to access Alices ability (as during pregnancy it’s presumed that the child and Alice are directly linked) and the end of that one was her entering her unborn child’s dreams using her ability and convincing him to block Freddy out the way she did and then helping him do it. In The final nightmare the young man with no memory is probably Jacob with no memory after being taken from Alice after she was committed to an asylum and raised in the system then Freddy used him to go on a rampage. (Setting up for the opening of the movie) or a remaining child from Jacob allowing Freddy to go on a rampage. (I like that it was Jacob because if he was possessed by Freddy from a young age it explains why he has no memory because Freddy was using him as a meat suit to pull others into the dreams and kill them with the Kristen ability to pull people into their dreams)
Nobody counts the second nightmare on elm street film as cannon. Wes craven wasn’t involved with the script or story at all. Robert England originally refused to reprise his role because he hated the script. They attempted to recast Freddy for two weeks of filming they realized it just wasn’t working and again begged Robert to return. He decided since they are going to do it with or without him if they were going to maim his character he might as well be there to minimize the damage,

The issue with the third film is that they didn't bury him in an actual cemetery. They buried him in a junkyard. Also the dog that revived him in the fourth film was named Jason.
Side note, the reason Freddy was still alive in the end of FvJ is because his legend was reborn.
