My wife had a spontaneous onset of bipolar and to this day I believe it is primarily endogenous in her case. But despite how acute it was and what medical emergency it was, in hindsight, I wish I had accepted it. Like a child breaking a bone it needs urgent treatment but you don't want to panic and start amputating limbs. I wish we had considered that medical emergency or not, sometimes there is no magic bullet treatment and watchful waiting with proper medical supervision is a safe option even in an acute crisis provided there is a proper safety plan etc.
Mental health & mental illness is extremely complicated and multifactorial. I do believe there is some possible biological components/mechanisms at work, but honestly, the psychotropic drugs do far more harm than good. Therapy for sure should be considered the first line treatment for any mental health challenges/illnesses. I think nutrition can play an important role as well: the average American doesn't not get enough Omega 3 fatty acids in their diet, so supplementation with Omega 3 can be helpful for mental health challenges. But honestly, the pharmaceuticals do a lot of harm and just aren't the answer. I feel different modalities of therapy is the answer for mental health challenges
