As a person diagnosed with gerd at 23, I can confirm that there is lots of contradicting advice out there on this health condition. It's almost like we have to choose between stomach or throat cancer. I am seeing more and more people with gerd (that had gerd for a long time) agree with the Dr. In this video. Moving from an acid blocker to an acid producer. I also want to mention something that helped me immensely. My gerd is partially a result of untreated anxiety. Once I got a handle on my anxiety, majority of the symptoms went away. If you have gerd and are an anxious person/ over thinker. Please seek counseling, there might be a link there that most doctors miss. Lucky for me, mine struggled with the same issue and was able to assist accordingly. To my fellow gerd patients - Everything will be ok. You are just on a journey of listening to your body ❤
Slowly but surely my anxiety turned into health anxiety so here I am. Now that I’ve recognized it, I’m slowly starting to heal all over again, I thought I did it before but the anxiety crept back in a different form! I was told I have symptoms of GERD and was given ppi’s. I didn’t take them and am going to try to heal naturally. 🤞
This is false , if you have gerd, acid reflux, and the doctor prescribes you a proton pump inhibitor, that medication basically stops your stomach lining from making a lot of acid, then why do people feel instantly relieved?
It is studied by them. They don't want it to go away. They want people on acid blockers for the rest of their life to make profit. Acid blockers were approved y the FDA with the understanding they would be prescribed for a few months due to the side effects. etc. But that is not what happened. Some people are on it for years because the drugs increase what caused the problem- low stomach acid. The doctors took "the wrong solution for the wrong problem" as he says in the video.
my husband has had reflux for more than 20 years and always diagnosed as too much stomach acid. we saw your video and just realized what the real problem is. thank you Dr. Berg, he is getting much better after following your advice. God bless you for being so generous educating people.
Literally Barbara O'Neil and Frank Suarez will say the same thing Dr. Berg says except Frank Suarez says not drinking enough water will cause it. Just for the record Frank Suarez was killed a few years ago before he published a book on how to cure cancer but they made it look like he unalived himself.
@@JOHNPT10he often got it and had to have some medicine to feel better for a while, but then the reflux kept coming back. Now he has some pickles mixed with apple cider or lemon tea on every meal and he feels much better 😊 no more medicine so far, except when he eats too much fat.
He can get tested with the Heidelberg test - to measure amt. of HCL IN his stomach, but most facilities want to ck. the esophagus... when what they really need to do is measure inside the stomach. I had the Heidelberg stomach acid test by my PCP.
I used to take 4 Pepsid AC chewables daily. I've posted this before but after intermittent fasting, dropping sugar drinks and improving my diet I lost 52 pounds, mostly visceral fat. I can honestly say I have not taken one in 19 months now. In addition to this is the dropping of 4 prescriptions for triglycerides, blood pressure and asthma. I'm pill free and also feel much better. 9.96 million subscribers, almost there!!!
That's great!👍 Many doctors want people to stay on all those meds because Intermittent fasting and cutting all those carbs would be bad for their health!
*Drinking a glass of water with one spoon of apple cider vinegar before every meal helped me so much with my acid reflex* plz like so people can see this and help someone out there.
@@monkeypants8878Well, precisely because it's acidic, apple cider vinegar helps to increase the level of acid in your stomach, and therefore the quality of digestion of food by the stomach.
This man should be given an award! Thank you doctor for your words of wisdom! Please do a video on Barrett’s esophagus. And any advice on how to treat it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for mentioning Barrett’s Esophagus….I have it and would love to have his expert advice on this!! It’s scary because we are close to developing the deadly esophagus cancer!😢
Thank you! I was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus a few years ago and last year was advised by a health food store to take Betaine and follow a green diet and it helped quite a bit but I only was taking it once a day so it never sustained the issue long term. I will try using the dosage u suggested and see if it helps long term. I would also love to learn more about Barrett’s Esophagus. Can it be reversed and if so how?
Spent years back & for doctors trying to resolve issues., been given so many meds which didn’t work I’ve just got progressively worse. Now in constant pain and suffering with no quality of life. You’ve solved them all through videos on vitamin deficiency. Can’t believe how simple it is & how many Carbs I was unknowingly consuming causing the deficiencies. Thank you so much. Followed this advice. I feel much better now (2 weeks later). No more symptoms of acid reflux. My GP was unable to diagnose this in 10 years and an Endoscopy procedure. Thank you Dr Berg. Brilliant.
@@MariaMeditates , Dr. Berg did not say and I am having the same issue. My advise is to take it until you get stomach upset and then cut back. Be aware that Betaine HCL causes an increase in your cholesterol.
I've suffered from the absolute worst kind of acid reflux you could imagine for 5 years now. I was super skeptical to try Hcl betaine. I thought I was gonna aggravate my symptoms or burn a hole in my stomach. PPIs were literally not working for me anymore. One day I went to the health food store picked up a bottle of hci betaine pills took 2 with the first bite of my meal. 2nd day did the same. I was eating spicy food eating trigger foods with absolutely zero symptoms of acid reflux. Don't be scared this literally changed my life!

Amazing! I always argue with my friends regarding this because they always believe the backward ways and thinks that PPI and antacid are the solution for gerd and heartburn. Thank you Dr. Berg for this video. You are really an angel to a lot of people
I’ve been prescribed a PPI recently. I’m on day 3 omeprazole , it started off with bad stomach pain & then excessive gas. And burping. They gave me this in case I had ulcers/esophagus ulcer and the reflux. I really don’t wanna keep taking this after 2 weeks. Do u think I can wean off of it and be back to normal!!!?
@@queenhawaii4577Yeah, but you’ll need to make lifestyle changes in the form of your diet. I’m in the same boat, one month into PPI prescription. Start with a detox diet where you eat lean meat, green and leafy veg, low acidic fruit and cut out all refined sugars.
@@Andy-White I’ve been trying to do my best. It feels slightly better. I try not to lay down after meals. What type of low acidic foods are you consuming?
Been on PPI for 10 years. Only now realised what it's doing and the risk it has. No wonder the pharmacy always asked me "has the doctor explained this medication to you?". But he never said any of this. Dr Berg. You may have saved my life. You are truly a gift. Thank you.
I've been living unhealthily lately, my whole body was hurting with muscle aches and stiff neck, back and joint issues etc. I've been binging your videos lately and decided to get back into IF and keto. I haven't taken Prilosec in almost 2 weeks and I used to take it every single day of my life since high school. Looks like my GERD is just a bad memory now.
@I'm happy it is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI), as the drug accumulates in the body, so diminishes your stomach's ability to produce digestive acid. It is also know as Omaprezol/Prilosec is similar to Nexium and Prevacid. All 3 are OTC. I was offered temporary relief from pain, after several days of a course. It started to become significantly less frequent and more of a passing fluctuation. BE AWARE to read dosage instructions, some are 14 day course/ 3 months before another course. I distinctly remember that with around 15 days till I could start my 2nd course it came back like it was training in the gym with a pro the whole time. I, personally would not recommend any of the above mentioned "Medications". Due to their lasting effects I have experienced in my life. I have seen medical professionals in my life make ultimately incorrect decisions. I don't have a lot of people I could trust with my own life. Educate and grow a community of others who seek truth and knowledge. We all seek comfort, try to truly offer yours to another before expecting any from another.
What providence, lol. I literally am awake now (25 minutes after the posting of this video) because I have heartburn and can't sleep, I even scrolled through some of your older heart burn related videos and just sat down to watch them.

Interesting piece. I will say this…I have been an acid reflux “sufferer” for decades and was taking an OTC pill every day. In mid-December 2022 I simply stopped consuming sugar, deserts and significantly cut back on refined carbohydrates. In addition to the other benefits enumerated elsewhere, acid reflux simply vanished. I stopped taking OTC after about a week and have not had reflux in 3 months.
I’m going to try this. I always feel the best when cutting out refined sugars/flours. And my Gerd is back and i think it’s because I’ve been eating processed terrible foods and my body simply can’t process it 🥴

My mom was having acid reflux symptoms for 2 months. We keep watching these videos and following recommendations. No one said she might be having heart issues. She ended up having a heart attack. Come to find out, one of the side effects of heart problems is acid reflux. Watch out!
Heartburn and heart attack are not related. The only thing in common is discomfort in your chest. Heart attack feels like pain or pressure in your chest. whereas heartburn is more a burning sensation that cause a bad taste in your mouth.
Best information I’ve seen amazing video. So for context I’m from London I’m 31 years old my symptoms started 2 years ago with chronic acid reflux and ingestion since then I’ve made my lifestyle changes like no Alcohol or liquor for you Americans no high fat foods and dairy products. Since then the reflux has gone but I’m left with chronic ingestion witch can last up to 10 - 12 hours it’s Radom sometimes I’ll eat the same foods one day it’s fine then not ok the next . I’ve been to the doctors first thing was PP1 medication witch luckily I learnt very quickly what it dose to you over long periods of time so I stopped within a month even tho it did help . Then I went for an Endoscopy , blood tests , stool sample , Ct scan , ultrasound all came back fine . So then the doctor tried to put me back on ppi witch i refused and asked if I could have a PH test done as I suspected I have a low PH the doctor told me that they wouldn’t test my PH because that’s only for people with no stomach then asked me if I have a degree in medicine because unfortunately this doctor didn’t know what I was talking about it’s a sad day when you know more then a doctor. So recently I’ve started to take L glutamine , prebiotic and digestive enzymes I’m hoping this will fix the problem but I wasn’t aware of betaine hydrochloride so now I’m thinking I’ll start that any other advice I’d appreciate it all the best to people suffering with this it’s no way to live make sure to get the right help and information and don’t trust these doctors nothing but glorified drug dealers .

Dear dr Berg, thank you tremendously for this video. I would never EVER think that my problem is not too much acid, as I was diagnosed, but completely the opposite. And I would never check for vitamin D deficiency either. My doctor suggested that I should ingest all alkaline stuff and also to completely avoid citrus fruits, coffee, red meat, and all food that acidifies. After I watched this video I tried to drink a glass of orange juice or diluted apple vinegar with my meal and it makes all of my symptoms, that you well described, completely go away. Now I finally see a healthy answer and solution through both of you and I also reversed my diabetes through HFLC dieting. I'm still learning and I want to thank you!
Something I figured is that having Potassium (Potassium Chloride from an electrolyte supplement for example) present in your stomach instantly stimulates acid release. As far as I know, the Proton Pumps which pump the HCl acid into the stomach are stimulated by Potassium ions. So drinking some electrolyte supplement that has a good amount of potassium should instantly help release some acid in my experience

I was in ICU due to severe gastritis and ulcer I didn't know about I was battling for more than year after first hospitalization. I searched for different types of specialist from neuro to cardio as I was having terrible migranes and chest pains, EEG, ECG and CT scan were normal. Took every medicine did all the tests that doctor and I both prescribed. I came to know about cervical spondylosis after I decided to go for MRI so I thought maybe I have figured it out. But one day after cholesterol fasting as soon as I completed my blood test the breathing problems appeared again like in first hospitalization. Before being hospitalized first time I was healthy and suddenly one day I got fever that came at night, my medications made things worse. Only after second hospitalization I got endoscopy then things start to become clear. Then again chest pain, wrist pain, leg pain with chest spasm and palpitations start to occur more, Now I know its because of esophagus spasm it feels like heart problem. After normal results of echo and TMT the picture became clear. Watching this video is bringing me more insight into what went wrong the issue is due to low acid and not high acid.

Betaine HCL with pepsin is really helpful. But getting your diaphragm to work properly fixed it completely for me. Stretches both for mobility and strenghtening, and breathing exercises. And try not have bad posture, and be more active. Had extreme issues for a couple of years. These things reversed it. The sphincter is connected to the diaphragm. A weak, tense or damaged diaphragm, and the valve wont close properly.
@imhappy83 heartburn and indigestion. I take Thornes, from their website: Indigestion can be caused by many things - including inadequate amounts of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach. HCl secretion in the stomach does several positive things. It assists protein digestion by activating pepsinogen to pepsin, it renders the stomach sterile against ingested pathogens, it inhibits undesirable overgrowth in the small intestine, and it encourages the flow of bile and pancreatic enzymes.* Hydrochloric acid also facilitates the absorption of a number of nutrients, including folate, vitamin B12, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, iron, and some forms of calcium, magnesium, and zinc.* Numerous studies have shown that hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach begins to decline with advancing age. Overuse of antacids or acid blockers can also lead to low levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which can result in poor protein digestion.*

I did this too and I feel better but it provides temporary relief from the acid in your esophagus that shouldn’t be there but worsens the problem long term. Lemon water is an acid that is actually considered alkalinizing because it brings your stomach acid to a stable range. Lemon water can fix acid reflux after drinking coffee. What??!! Both acids but coffee is the wrong acidity and lemon is the correct one. Drinking lemon after coffee will actually settle your stomach. Coffee is bad we shouldn’t drink it but lemon will fix your stomach, control the stomach sphincter and prevent the reflux so you don’t need baking soda water. Which ultimately worsens the condition
Heartburn symptoms include: Burning sensation in the chest or throat. A sour taste in the mouth. Difficulty swallowing. Feeling like food is stuck in the throat. Regurgitation of stomach contents into the mouth. Nausea or vomiting. Sore throat or hoarseness.

It is very scarey, ERS are closing down! I wish there were more doctors like you here💜
I have had severe GERD for 20 years. I wish i could agree that simply taking HCL is the answer but this condition is caused by a multitude of factors that need to be addressed. Let's not forget that people who have GERD likely have other inflammatory issues of the gastrointestinal tract, including gastritis, esophagitis, SIBO, gallbladder or liver issues, etc. For me, taking things like bitters, apple cider vinegar, and hydrochloric acid actually makes things worse. I STILL have reflux so the pain in my esophagus and stomach are even more severe... I need to take several days to recover from just one dose. Having lived with this condition for so long I can honestly say that HOW I eat (whether rushed or under a stress response) and when I eat plays more of a role than WHAT I eat and what supplements I try to take in order to improve this and other gastrointestinal issues (for me SIBO). Obviously our food and beverage choice still play a role, but If we are are stressed out when and after we eat, our digestion shuts down and the LES is certainly more likely to open leading to reflux. It's great if some people can take HCL right off the bat and see symptom relief, but in my experience simply taking supplements is not necessarily the golden ticket to this condition.

I'm going to start healthy keto, and fasting and hopefully be able to get off of it. I'm 5'8" and 248 lbs. I've watched a lot of Dr. Berg's videos lately and am really looking forward to starting this journey. It's never to late to start taking care of yourself the right way!
@@detraxop6680 Well I can tell you that I was able to stop taking Nexium by basically following his advice. Healthy Keto led to weight loss which lessened my reflux. Couple that with drinking apple cider vinegar daily and I was able to stop taking Nexium for the past 3 months. I had to take some the past 4 days because I haven't been able to sustain the diet(because I've been absurdly busy not because the diet wasn't sustainable), but today I started back on Keto and I'm positive that I can stop taking the medicine once my weight goes back down a bit.
I wish the majority of doctors were in your caliber. You have know idea how much you've helped me. Thank you Dr.Berg. Because currently i'm diagnosed having GERD. It start when i'm feeling uncomfortable at my throat area (Dysphagia Symptoms), hard to swallow even my own Saliva and sometimes feel like hard to breath. Then, i was referred to the ENT (Ear Nose & Throat) specialist for further inspection. At this point, the ENT doctor inspect me using the Laryngoscopy method. During the process, the Doctor observed that, there are some sort of white Saliva at the behind of my throat (Epiglottis), further inside there are some small bumps found out (due to acid effect or ulcer). Next, at the Vocal Cords area, the doctor found out that the muscles at that area are quite thicker (swollen due to stomach acid erosion), and lastly at the Trachea area, where the opening area quite larger than usual (doctor suspects due to stomach acid erosion) and you can see deep inside it. At the end, the doctor diagnose me as a GERD and prescribed a Pantoprazole 40mg. What is concerning me now are, am i having a Highly Acidic type of GERD or the opposite type as been explained by Dr. Eric Berg. I'm scared that the ENT doctor have wrongly diagnosed me 🥺🥺🥺

Dr. Berg Thank you. I only eat one meal a day and I exercise but my gut still has issues. My gallbladder is working at 6% compared to 30+% but I’m going to try and heal my body with the vitamins you mentioned on your website and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Eating just one meal a day is damaging your body too. Things can't be 8 (eat just one meal) or 80 (eat eat 1 ton of food). A middle ground must be found.
This was the reason I started intermittent fasting. No medicin or reflux for 2 years now. I have a 5 hours eating frame on weekdays and no restrictions weekends.👍
So dr berg has recommended fewer meals in general but I find when you have an eating window -i eat multiple times or all throughout the eating window. Does this make a difference for you?
Anxiety too, I stopped getting anxious and my heartburn disappeared for a while, but came back recently when I start getting anxious again! I will def try this Betaine hydrochloride
I've been adding 1/2 cap of apple cider vinegar to a bottle of water and its done wonders for me. I used to wake up with shooting balls of sticky burning acid in my throat or lungs. But no more. My stomach is much better. I'll take the natural ACV for myself.
You're so awesome!! I knew this already because of you & previous video but whenever I get it, which is rare, I take ACv with water and it goes away 👍🏻✅ wish my husband would listen to me/you 😊. As always thank you so much for your knowledge Dr. Berg!!!!!

Thank you! Thanks for including information for those that have Gerd AND a ulcer. This is why some of us can't drink Apple Cider Vinegar. Most other videos don't address having both problems. Really appreciate you Dr. Berg🙂
Hi am i understanding correctly from this video that if i have both GERD n ulcer,i can just follow the remedy and the steps mentioned in this video? and also,if my GERD is due to high stomach acid,i can still follow the same remedy n steps mentioned in this video? Greatly appreciate your help....thanks
Why don't you try ashwagandha, it really helps with anxiety, I can relate to your story very well as I also had heartburn due to anxiety
I also going through this. When one should take aswandha in a day ?
Slowly but surely my anxiety turned into health anxiety so here I am. Now that I’ve recognized it, I’m slowly starting to heal all over again, I thought I did it before but the anxiety crept back in a different form! I was told I have symptoms of GERD and was given ppi’s. I didn’t take them and am going to try to heal naturally. 🤞
Thanks man, just wondering, is there any way I can reduce anxiety without going to therapy?
So did you treat your gerd? Or just your anxiety?
Why isnt this problem studied more by professionals?! So many people are suffering from this?! I am so amazed everytime.
Unless the solution can be sold as a pill there isn't much incentive for the medical community 🙏
Big pharma .

Literally Barbara O'Neil and Frank Suarez will say the same thing Dr. Berg says except Frank Suarez says not drinking enough water will cause it. I used to take 4 Pepsid AC chewables daily. I've posted this before but after intermittent fasting, dropping sugar drinks and improving my diet I lost 52 pounds, mostly visceral fat. I'm pill free and also feel much better. 9.96 million subscribers, almost there!!!

Something I figured is that having Potassium (Potassium Chloride from an electrolyte supplement for example) present in your stomach instantly stimulates acid release. As far as I know, the Proton Pumps which pump the HCl acid into the stomach are stimulated by Potassium ions.
Then again chest pain, wrist pain, leg pain with chest spasm and palpitations start to occur more,
Now I know its because of esophagus spasm it feels like heart problem. After normal results of echo and TMT the picture became clear.
Watching this video is bringing me more insight into what went wrong the issue is due to low acid and not high acid.
I've had almost the exact symptoms! What have you done about this?

Very informative! I have all these issues .
I also take betaine w pepsin before large meals and it helps a lot 👍🏽
This is me. My hiatal hernia has damaged or loosened my les. I'm not sure how to get it working again. Any ideas? Thankyou in advance.
I’m currently pregnant and take Betaine HCL with pepsin several times a day!
Where did you learn these stretches from, can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks Dr Eric. Proper food combining also eliminates heart burn. Eating Keto prevents it.
Well said

During the process, the Doctor observed that, there are some sort of white Saliva at the behind of my throat (Epiglottis), further inside there are some small bumps found out (due to acid effect or ulcer). Next, at the Vocal Cords area, the doctor found out that the muscles at that area are quite thicker (swollen due to stomach acid erosion), and lastly at the Trachea area, where the opening area quite larger than usual (doctor suspects due to stomach acid erosion) and you can see deep inside it.
