30 years of excellence - The complete PlayStation history

- On December 3rd, 1994, Sony's PlayStation was released. This was preceded by a wild development period with disputes between Sony and Nintendo. In this retrospective, I look back at the development of the first PlayStation, tell you how the break with Nintendo came about and, in addition to the console, look at all the most important games that have been released in the last 30 years. In the video, you can find out why the PS1 is known as Sony's success story and what Ken Kutaragi has to do with it.

Great video.
Most PlayStation documentaries don't acknowledge Psygnosis's contribution in making the development hardware more suitable for western game developers.
This was a major factor in the success of the PlayStation.
PlayStation is a cultural and entertainment icon. Thank you, for enriching our lives and offering an exciting alternative to Nintendo and Sega, Kutaragi-San.
PlayStation! 💙
Probably my favorite console of all time, simply because I spend most of my time with PS1 games (although I also spend a lot with N64 & 3DS games). I've got the PS1 really late (it was the white PsOne from 2000) and I remember the first game I owned for the system were: Spyro Year of the Dragon, Woody Woodpecker Racing, Need for Speed High Stakes & Crash Team Racing. Prior to that I only had played Tekken 3 with a friend. But all of these games (apart from Woody Woodpecker) were absolutely great games and I've become fascinated as a child with these games. Later I spend a lot of time with other games like Disney's Aladdin Nasira's Revenge, Driver, ISS Pro Evolution, Moto Racer 2, Ridge Racer Type 4, Gran Turismo, Ace Combat 3 etc.
I can go on with all of the must have games, but the list would be way too long, so I'd like to mention some of the other great games, that aren't necessarily the first games that comes to mind: Captain Tsubasa J Get in the Tomorrow, Dewprism/Threads of Fate, Parasite Eve, SaGa Frontier II & Vagrant Story (Most of them from Squaresoft and yes, I imported some of them, since some of those games unfortunately never made it to Europe).
Well-researched video! Ken Kutagari truly was significant for the system's development process.
I agree , and also played a puckload of Ridge Racer Type 4, as well as the syphon filter and twisted metal games, oh and I think the most important games to me were Silent Hill and of course, Metal Gear solid. Sweet
@@jayesun3420 yeah great selection of games! Metal Gear Solid is definitely a masterpiece!
This retelling of the historic event (s) are well documented and explained. I think it is excellent. Subscribed 🎉
Awesome interesting video
Thanks for watching
I gotta say that , I mainly subbed because of the first screen/image that was in your video. You are keeping it real. Gotta respect that!
Enjoying your english content. AI isnt perfect at translating but your original content quality is obviously high enough to overcome its shortcomings.
I dislike AI stuff but I can give exceptions for stuff like this that was simply done originally in another language and do this to reach a broader audience. The only other exception I'm ok with is parody.
It would be easier if the original German version of this documentary had English captions since I wouldn't mind hearing German while explaining the documentary of the first PlayStation 1. And to this very day, even after 30 years, the PS1 is still a fun console to play on from time to time.
Also, if Sega didn't release Virtua Fighter, Sony would have had a hard time releasing 3D games on a console in 1994.
@@SuperFlashDriver that would be cool for someone practicing german so congrats on that...for me that would put it out of reach again as I tend to multitask and only look at the screen if I'm curious enough to see a visual of what they're talking about...I'm in and out visually but fairly dialed in on the audio...however, most UA-cam videos have pretty good captions in real time if you turn them on for English.
@@aaronking9332 Yeah, although english captions for videos with non-native english voiceovers can be a hit and miss. But either way, it does help a lot of people be able to find the video in its original language, simply by changing the title of the video alone if that ever helps.
Such a nice and succinct documentary (considering the time frame of PlayStation) thank you for the English translation 🎉
You're welcome 🤗
Very good job! 👏 To this day I still can't overcome the sadness when the PlayStation was abandoned in favour of the PS2. I know it's crazy but my biggest gaming dream would be to see again the crystal cases of PS in stores again! Well, in a few years there will be no games at all in stores, but anyway...
Thank you for sharing this. I thought I was the only one who liked & remembered the crystal / jewel cases (for PS1 & Dreamcast). I love how they look. Honorable mention to the PS2 games and the DVD cases they came in.
Just wanted to say thankyou for deciding to upload in English.
amazing video, please transale also the video about the saturn

Awesome video and insights new sub 4life have Awesome day FYI watching in Houston Texas you're work is paying off.
Man PlayStation has so many memories as a kid. I just wish they would still make their franchises and not shelve them. “ Socom, killzone, resistance, tenchu, mag, starhawk warhawk , mag uncharted, days gone, “
The moment of "299" Must have an edition of sony's history price and put them on special edition console.
I have an idea where you can do make four parts about the PlayStation two PlayStation three PlayStation four and five end of the whole thing make a compilation of all of the videos for a five hour movie on UA-cam about the history of PlayStation
I have 4 of them, all working !
Ai really has come quite far. Cool to see it being used like this. The translation gave your voice a bit of a lisp though lol
When the PS1 came out in Britain I bought ridge racer but also found out that ridge racer revolution was out in Japan hence why I used the disc swap trick as .od chips weren't out yet❤️🏴
This came up in my recommendation after watching some Sonic deepdives looks like tonight the algorithm is on fire.
we need a playstation 1 remake yes the best playstation ever you you dont bring graphics into it that blinds the greatness of playstation 1, i wish they would redesign the playstation with the classic look but modern design now i would keep the pop in disc lid cover but instead of the circle cover design the full top cover .the whole square top pops up a hidden pop in much like the ps2 slim. for the release of PS1R bring back classic memory cards and that work in any ps1r without reformating, no disc installs no forced updates. just good old fashion gaming. taking the best games of playstion 1 history from long list of rpg's and action games plus more and remake these games. for the ps1r reliving the greatest console in time. if i could add intelligent qube remake for it is a must.
I personally think that the redesign of the PS1, in my opinion, should be more akin to the shapes of the console. In fact, one of my ideas for my own MJM console was to not only have it be a circle (akin to that of the ring/circle icon from PlayStation), but also allow people to customize their console to however they like. Plus, the same console can also be used for computer and other applications, not just for gaming, movies, music player, and apps, which includes a separate drive for computer operating systems, as well as take it apart and put it together to create a sports ball out of it, which includes Soccer/Football, Pigskin Football, Baseball, Ping Pong Ball, Tennis Ball, etc. It was an idea I had back in 2012 but never made, mentioned, or conceptulized as it stayed as an idea I had 12 years back. But seeing how Sony nowadays don't care for their old PS1, PS2, and PS2 consoles, including Ken Kutaragi himself, it's a sad fate of what happened to sony nearly 12 years later after the PS1 came out in December 1994 and September 1995 in US.
Wboever played the Nintendo president in the tetris movie is pretty much spot on how he looked in real life back than
Best documentary ever I seen
Wow, thanks a lot for watching 🙏
33:47 - Ooohhhh.... Yeah um... Kinda should've rephrased that a bit there, mate. 😅
Damn, that flew under my radar 😂
Ich wusste doch diese Stimme kommt mir irgendwie bekannt vor 😂
I'm sorry, upon my second viewing, not excellent , Exemplary. Really well done
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it 👍
The content is great, accurate and detailed, but what's up with the mouths moving in multiple scenes xd (jean claude), even when there is no mouth on the screen AI tries to make a mouth...?
Yeah, AI messed up a bit, sorry
PC over PlayStation, PlayStation over Xbox , Xbox over Baywatch Season 1
Jump & Run... aka 'Platformer'.
This is some creepy good AI video, why cant it pronounce numbers though?
I really don't know why the AI has so much trouble with numbers 🙄
Some skipped numeracy class clearly. Calling N64 the N, 3DO the Do and the PS One the PS 🤦🏾♂️
Some other skipped reading class. Or did you read the note at the beginning of the video?
Nintendo's biggest fumble lol they created a monster!!!!
30 years of excellence ?? Hum. My first Playstation (yeah the grey one from the 90ies) bought day one, survived... 6 hours and broke down. I wait 6 MONTHS for the repair service of Sony. 6 MONTHS. oh but yeah, the PS2, PS3 were good consoles.
Such a shame most of the original people are gone and now it's run by DEI and sucks.
Achoo.. SNEEZE controller lol
Excellence?
To those who don't know better i suppose.
I have worked on game hardware for a while now. It wasn't until 2010 or so that Sony finally made a reliable playstation.
On top of that a rather large portion of the games that made the platform big were from third parties that could have gone on any platform but chose playstation because Nintendo and SEGA were in mid F-up.
Sony themselves are not a game company. They didn’t really have a history in the craft. They let other people from third parties do most of the work for them and hired outside talent to produce their in-house franchises.
This is not to say that a good time cant be had on a playstation mind you. However Sony gets an awful lot of credit for works that are not theirs on hardware that historically dies way too easily.
Is this nade by AI?😮
Have you read the note at the beginning?
more like 20 years of excellence...
It wasnt a public humilliation. Sony basicly wanted to get control of nintendos ips like they did in the music industry. They changed the contracts, thats why nintendo flip them the middle finger as they went with sony main rivals at the time phillips. Good call on Nintendo
I agree that Sonys contract was unfair but for them not to tell Sony was messed up on Nintendos part. They should have at least told Sony they are dropping them. Nintendos leaders sucked in the 90s and Sonys leaders were driven by greed.
10:12 min. the person in question suspiciously moves his mouth to the words of the voice over.
26:20 1000% attachment rate? Not bad, for every console, 10 copies were sold!
The PlayStation was overrated. Some of the games were weak as fuck and it was highly overpriced and they created a near monopoly as of 2024 because the Xbox brand is a joke and the switch is just a kids toy so right now it’s just the PS5 but with the launch of the PS5 pro they made another mistake just like they did with the PS3 and overpriced console with no disc drive and not even a vertical stand and it’s priced at $700. I guess Sony didn’t learn anything from the disaster that was PlayStation 3. Anyone who still a gamer I feel sorry for because you are being robbed blind. This is why I quit gaming after the PS4 and xbox one generation I realize everything is all DLC and subscription services and the beyond long installation times it cost way too much money to be a gamer these days and for someone who’s 40 it’s not worth it… fuck you, Sony and Microsoft for the corporate greed. You’ve forced down our throats. I am done fuck the gaming industry
