*Please Read Carefully* Comments that add to the conversation are welcome. Abusive/racist/sexist comments and conspiracy theories are not. This is a zero-tolerance policy that is not open for discussion. Failure to be a decent human being will result in posting privileges being revoked without warning or notification.
Edit: I'm getting a lot of "what happened?" questions from people, both here and on Twitter. This is not in response to a specific situation; it's because I waste way too much time moderating comments. This is not the place for anyone to share off-topic opinions, whatever they may be and whichever "side" they might be from. If you think "I never see stuff like that here", it's because I've been wasting my time deleting them. At least 99% of you are awesome people who share my love for old video games, and this pinned comment is not directed at you . The point of this pin is simply to let everyone else know that I've moved to a zero-tolerance policy and am done trying to be the nice guy.

The PS1 holds a very special place in my heart. Being a *huge* Ridge Racer fan (our local Aladdin's Castle had one), I just couldn't wait to play the game at home, so I imported a JP console during the Christmas season of 1994. Japan Video Games out of California set me up with a launch console, and a copy of RR for around $700 USD. I was in heaven. Made slaving away at McDonald's to pay for it worth every minute. My most cherished console launch of them all.

Sony PlayStation did so well out of the gate because it was different. Different enough to make people take notice of it as not being another Sega or Nintendo system. They went for a more mature focus of those who grew up on the NES and Genesis were at a point in their lives for something more... bold. And it worked. I myself was not swayed by the marketing like i know others were, i grew up on the 2600 so by the 90's I was an adult and being that I liked all types of games... that meant i also liked all types of game systems. So naturally i got a PS1 right after i picked up the Saturn. And supporting both was rather costly but worth it for me. Started off with Ridge Racer, Philosoma and Tekken.

Your content is well-researched, has lots of awesome original 90/80s ads, magazine shots, and gameplay footage, and your prose and accounts are personal, honest, and not written by AI.

CGQ takes us back to when we didn’t have to worry about what was going on in the world. We played the latest in video games, read the latest comics, arcades were still going strong, and saw the latest movies in the theater. I appreciate keeping politics out. Even if it’s something I agree with, we all need a break.

We were kids and teens back then so we didn't notice or care about the politics, and politics hadn't infested into popular culture (tho it was starting to i.e Bill Clinton, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Princess Diana death etc.). It was still there tho, just more an "old person" thing and not commercialized nearly to the degree it is today.
Which was for the best tbh. Still tho, we even had Nick News back then but it wasn't the culture-war/extremists politics BS we have today there or in mainstream either tbh.

This was excellent Chris! You did my favorite console of all time justice. The PS1 came out at a pivotal time in my life. My parents had moved us to a different state 2 years prior to the release of the PS1 and got rid of all our systems and games to get some extra cash for the move. I was devastated at the time but quickly moved on. Along comes 1995 and the PS1 re-ignited my fire for gaming and me and my friends bonded over so many games on that little grey box. It'll always have a special place in my heart.

Chris, I havent been MORE excited for a UA-cam video to pop up in a LONG TIME. This is SO great! Sorry about the MK3 music trouble. Looking forward to you covering the PS1 days on CGQ+ also!!! Please keep it up!
Playstation in 1995 feels SO close to 3DO in style, games, and 'attitude.' Its funny, Sony seems like it succeeded mostly because it got a boost from 3D0's corpse (even pilfering its best games). 3DO coming out in 93' was probably the biggest cause of its demise (FMVs, high price tag, underpowered for 3D).
Would we be living with the Pansonic 8DO in 2021 if Sony released the Playstation first??

The price is 299 with no save storage and no game. Saturn bundle included builtin save memory and Virtua Fighter. Magazines rated Capcom fighters with lower scores in Saturn due to "blue shadows". The Sony machine was really brilliant but it had a favorable coverage against its competitors.

Sony had deeper pockets & presumably had favor with electronics retailers due to their history. It was certainly a good machine and had a lot of great games, but I feel like part of the reason for their success is similar to that of the XBOX, in that the parent company had the financial resources to market the hell out of it and to keep the console afloat even if it hadn't taken off as quickly. It was hardly a fair fight, given that Sega and Nintendo could never even come close to Sony's marketing budget, but that's business for you.

It was relatively cheap. The system was friendly for programmers and the CD’s were cheap to print. Combine that with Sega’s recent failures of the Sega CD and 32X with Nintendo’s cartridge system and expensive games you had the perfect storm for Sony to take advantage.
