  • Upgrading your fork might be hard but luckily there are many great options for under $500. Many of today's riders do not require a $1000+ suspension fork, nor can a consumer find the exact fork they may need in the $1000+ range as the specifications become more modern and proprietary to recent trends within the industry. If you have an older bike or don't have a large budget to upgrade your suspension, the chances are you looking at or below the $500 range is pretty high. RockShox basically rules the market with options like their Recon RL, Recon Silver TK, 30 Silver TK, 30 Gold RL, and 35 Gold RL. BUT two competitors hold ground with Marzocchi's Bomber Z2 MTB fork and Maniours Markhor Fork. So whether you need rim brake mounts or disc brake mounts, tapered or straight steerer tubes, adjustable travel options, air or coil sprung, we go over just about every option you should take into consideration when trying to upgrade the suspension on your mountain bike if you are under that $500 budget.

It's what he does for all of his videos, isn't it? He's a salesman... that's his job. Good luck finding anyone who would be willing to review these affordable products at the expense of their own time, and probably money (to purchase the forks in advance), I just don't know if it's a viable part of the market to be getting too in-depth about, especially since people who want to know all the nuances are probably on their way to wanting something even better anyway. You'll never get a good review on this stuff, consumer reviews are from people who don't know any better, and actual reviews are from people who would have to pretend its good, when they know it's far from the luxuries they're riding on their own bikes.

depends on which version you get. I just got the 120mm version and you can't adjust the travel, infact you can't adjust the travel on any of the Recon RL 120mm forks no matter what model year it is, but you can on basically all the other versions. I have 2020 TREK Roscoe 7 and it came with a Rockshox Judy Silver SL 100mm fork. I've been riding it pretty hard and really feel that I need a beefier fork and one that rides smoother. I live in Vegas and the trails here can get VERY rocky. Just today, going down a trail called the Late Night Trail - I felt like I was at the limit of my fork's capabilities. There were some pretty hardcore rock gardens and some steep sections that I took on and it was kinda eye opening.....I also walked a bunch of them. In any case because of this video I just purchased a RockShox 35 Gold RL 120mm as a replacement. I'm looking forward to feeling the difference and getting some smoother rides on the trails! Thanks for this review!

I also use a rockshox domain 303 (unpopular squad where ya at?) on my main bike (can be seen in my profile pic). Fun fact: The Rockshox Domain forks with the serial number and date code ranging from 9T8XXXX to 43T8XXXX and with the steel steerer are recalles because the steerer could snap in half right at the crown. Guess what? Mine is 28T8XXXX.

DNM USD-6! Seriously, I've just gone from a Cane Creek Helm Coil to The DNM USD-6 and I can honestly say that it's freekin awesome!
It has controls for rebound & compression and it has a pointless compression lock out too!
It's a very supportive fork but supple too and any concerns about twisting are unfounded.
The fork is very, very well built. Easily on par with any of the big brands and judging by the cheap DNM forks I've seen over the years, with their anodizing intact and still supple, I can almost guarantee that the USD-6 will be equally durable.
This does not feel like a fork that cost me only $213, yeah you read that right, my previous fork, the Helm Coil cost $740, over 3 times the price yet I honestly prefer the DNM. Note; that's not to say the Helm was a bad fork, on the contrary, it was a great fork, but the DNM just feels better to ride.

Thanks for an excellent vid. I've had 3 of the RockShox 30 Silver TK, 2016, 2017 and 2019. The 2016s are great, I had them fitted to a 26" hardtail and I've struggled to better my times on some of my favourite trails even with higher-end forks/bikes. I replaced them with the 2017s because the 2016 200hr service kit didn't seem to be available any more. The 2017s are awful, oversprung and massively overdamped even with the rebound on minimum. I spoke to SRAM about this and they said at about that time they were using a different 5w oil so I changed it to Bel-Ray 5w but it made no difference, they just feel totally dead. My 2019s are identical to the 2017s and new in the box, I haven't even cut the steerer tube yet. These feel the same as the 2016s even though all internal part numbers are the same as the 2017s so RS must have changed the damper or something. I might try some 2.5w oil from a MX dealer for the 2017s but for now I've just taken them off the bike, had a set of 2008 Fox F120RL so I threw them in instead

Ive stayed consistent with my 50 hour and 200 hour service kits and it honestly felt better to me then the 150mm fox talas that the stumpy came with so i sold the talas and used the money to buy a set of Azonic Outlaw wheels. The 50 hour service kit (lower leg: oil seals, dust seals, fork oil change, clean everything with isopropyl etc . . . ) i do myself but the 200 hour kit ( full rebuild) i order the parts then take it to local bike shop that has a really good suspension mechanic, older dude who started racing bmx,4x, and xc back in the early 80s. The fork still feels great and I have no legitimate reason to buy a new one other then my stumpy is a 26er and i want to make it a mullet, plus anothet 10-20mm of travel wouldnt hurt, i bottom out my fork my often then my shock anyway (rear shock is 140mm of travel as well). Would anyone reading this recommend the rockshox recon 35 rl in 150mm or the bomber z2 in 150mm and why? Im open to both but leaning towards the bomber. I live in the bay area and spend the majority of my time on loose over hard single track thats either flat flowy and fast or super chunky and techy with rocks/roots galore, and the rest of my bike time is spent sessioning one of the many local dirt jump sets.

I love the looks of that Manitou fork. I didn't know they make MTB forks, I knew them from some heavy industrial equipment, and they are French. I would love to try one out some day...

The fat bike is just a cheap chineese basher called "The Rock" made by "CANNELLO" and it has the stock standard non suspension forks on it that the bike came with when purchased but if you have been able to find them on the internet you will see the look of the PASAK TRIPLE TREE AIR SUSPENSION FORKS will make the bike look really good, also i am 100kg but im not a fat guy, just been training for a long time and im a very thick person, also i m 44 years old going on like im a 10 year old kid, if you like to have fun i believe that you must have a younger side, hopefully you have been able to find and see the PASAK FORKS and you will see why i like them, thank you for your fast reply, Jay, stuck in thai.

My idea of an upgrade is to forks which will work with what I have and go from rim to disc brakes. By keeping the post mounts for rim brakes, I can use those mounts for older brakes as mounts for something else. Which I have in mind already.
Other manufacturers are Rim, or disc, I NEED both.

I just installed a new 2021 Rockshox Recon RL 32 on my bike last night and it's crazy how much better the 2021 version looks compared to that 2019 version. The 2019 version, to put it mildly looks cheap. The 2021 version definitely doesn't look cheap, although I wish I had could have found the matte black version instead of having to go with the gloss black.

I spent 1k dollars on a Walmart but the UK version halfords and after buying te bike and learning a little I found the alloy frame that has a lifetime no quibble warranty that's weights 13kg with everything on it except rider lol was a win, , unfortunately everything else was junk Chinese wheels and hub's cheapest maxxis rares mt200 hydrloic brakes deore derailleur which I think was fake or a cheap model mass produced for bike which snapped trying to changed into 52t gear it wasn't designed for.
Took the bike to where I should of bought a bike and he is using the frame to build my dream bike deore xt gearset and m8210 4 pot brakes even deore xt pedals u get the dirt only thing left on the bike originally now is the seat and grips which I just order the Specialized Power Pro, and grips im sure are just down to what colour I want, I assumed the forts would be junk they are xcr32 with full lock and rebound control with magnesium parts which come in some many different models the closest looking to are $250 dollars, I never had a problem with them so should I upgrade to $600.SET match the bike or just keep using them ???? Help or suggestions thanks I need a 9x100 but they are tapered I currently use 160 discs because all the forks support but czn use up to 203 if nee fork required. Thanks

  • @Kot1026
    @Kot1026 4 роки тому

Surely, FOX has more fine tuning and better feeling suspension products, but I personally prefer ROCKSHOX for 2 big reasons:
    1. RS are much easier, cheaper and less finicky to service
    2. Reasonably priced products and spare parts (yet expensive, but much less than FOX)
Also, FOX parts are more sensitive to maintenance intervals. For instance, if you don't service a RS fork in time, it'll just leak out oil, and even when almost empty, there won't be a terrible damage, as on a FOX kashima fork, which will be ruined immediately.
As for other brands, like Manitou or Marzocchi, I don't like them, not because they're bad, it's simply a nightmare to search for spares and service kits, because I do everything by myself.

The pandemic has really exhausted supplies of MTB forks..I was trying to get the RockShox Recon Gold RL but none was available at local shops as well as Amazon and even WWC here. Seems like every vendor only stock certain models and only specific wheel size and travel (29" seems to be the most widely available as I'm struggling to find a 27.5). I was even willing to compromise to top up my budget to get a Reba but even that was unavailable. But I can understand that retailers can't be stocking every model/wheel size/travel/RL & TK...
