- My X540 lawn tractor wouldn’t start this spring and these are the steps I worked through to ultimately solve my problem.
I think trying to jump start the dead battery is what caused the electronic control module to go bad. I’ll use the owners manual suggestion for jumping in the future and try to do better with leaving a maintainer on the battery during winter.
Products and tools used in the video:
I got an OEM battery from the dealer but if you want to save a few bucks and order online, this should work and has great reviews:

After you get that mower running and ready for summer, change out that oil! Easy process and I have a video for that too.

My neighbor had a racoon they could not get rid of out of the rafters of their garage. For four days neighbors tried. They used garden hoses, They tried to shoo it with brooms etc. Nothing worked. I drove my riding mower in and left it running. I closed the door but left one foot of it opened. within 2 minutes it came running out. So I opened the door and took my mower home. That was more humane than killing it which the neighbor did not want done. I watched your video and realize why my mower won't start. $100 is better than having them charge me $400 at the shop, thanks.
they make a small unit that plugs into an ac outlet humans cannot hear it but animals can all animals will leave its very cheap and it works
Thank you I watched your video you were right. Finally got my mother’s John Deere started, it sat in the garage for several years. I was taking my mower over and cutting her grass.
I decided to buy a tune up kit , still didn’t start, watched your video bought the part it started. Thanks again.
Great to hear Ken, thanks for watching.
The issue my dad had was he finished mowing the lawn, he Turner it off and went back later to move it. No go. It was throtling but it was not turning on. We spent days checking stuff. Found this vid and was going to apply the jumpstart solution, so I had to push it a distance to a more convenient location, bacwards then forward, just then it hit me to try and turning it on, voila!!! It worked, by moving back and forth it unlocked o disengaged something witin the engine and was able to run it after wards, I got to soy nothing was obstructing the propeler or anything else where it was parked and died, very weird, hope ot makes sense and hopefully helps other People before spending on unnecesary fixes!
I just want to say THANK YOU! I've been messing with mine for about a month now. I've paid a mobile mower repair guy over $400 and still no fix. Fixing the negative to the body is something I honestly hadn't considered. Thank you for this video.
Hey, thanks for being a regular guy and admitting that we all can make mistakes. This was helpful to me. Dontcha just hate those $100 mistakes, though...
Best thing to do when making expensive mistakes is to record it and put it on the internet!
This is possibly the most useful lawn tractor troubleshooting videos out there. Helped me a ton. Starting fluid in the intake of my D105 didn't work, so I'm off to buy an inline spark tester for 4 bucks
Good luck! Process of elimination.
WHATS THAT GOT TO DO WITH IT. ANY BODY KNOWS YOU NEED IT.
Yes sir it did fix it completely. Not sure why JD sells 10-30 with their service kits? What’s happening is the oil is leaking past the piston rings. I also have a 30 year old jd 318 although a completely different motor it did the same thing until I switched oils. For what little bit it costs it’s worth a try.
Now you’re making me want to try this. Can you link me to the exact oil you use and I think you mentioned a Lucas additive or something, can you link that too? I’m in Minnesota so I’ve got some time before my spring tune up, still 12” of snow on the ground.
Thank you so much for doing this video, it was the problem with my mower. Your efforts making this video helped another person, your a hero.
That’s the goal of the channel, share information that hopefully adds value and helps other people. Glad you got it handled. The part is more expensive than I would have liked, but it fixed my problem instantly and it fired right up. I was close to bringing it to the dealer because it had me stumped.
Same issue here, got that part (30% more now of course) and it fired right up. Thanks for making the video!
Thank you so much for this information, I have an X540 with a snowblower, and cab. Last winter the tractor just stopped dead while I was blowing snow. It was as if I had turned off the ignition key. This happened on 3 occasions! The battery was 10 years old but still seemed to be OK. I kept it on a low charge when the tractor was not being used. After the battery was fully charged the tractor would start right up. Of course, because I'm an old fart, I placed the battery jumpers directly on the battery terminals, as I have done on all engines since Adam was a lad. Because you were smart enough to actually read the manual we all can now have the benefit of your knowledge and avoid connecting to the negative battery terminal with a 12V. source I will be ordering a new module imediatly. Your post is very very much appreciated. It will undoubtedly save me from another attack of touretts. Why does'nt Deere put a warning sticker close to the battery, they have stickers everywhere else!
It should be labeled better, you are 100% right! I only read the manual after I screwed it up and had to figure out what I did. Nice set up you have with the snowblower.
Hey KKKKK87256, I'm in the same boat as you....an old fart that paid $4,000 for my Deere X-370 (new) six years ago and now it's broke. Control module has failed.....$330.00 at the Deere dealer. OUCH!!!! Ridiculous. Looking for an old machine that has NO electronic crap on it at all. Not spending $330.00 for a tiny little box that could easily fail again in 3,4, or 5 years from now. We're living in a world with WAY TOO MUCH electronic crap with very poor reliability. Yes, when it's all new, it works great. And by the way, I never jump-started my mower once, only replaced the battery one time with a new Deere battery. I've already had to replace the seat (all cracked and ripped up) both deck spindle assemblies, both drive belts, all three idler pulleys, both spark plugs and ignition coils. I keep all my lawn gear stored inside all year, and am fanatical with keeping up regular maintenance on all my machines. I'm done with John Deere.
@santaclause2875 100% man! It’s getting frustrating on a lot of levels. I just replaced a broken fuel sending unit…for $150 dollars! I couldn’t believe how expensive that stupid part was. ua-cam.com/video/5yJ12e9JC20/v-deo.html
If not Deere, what would you get next? I might be shopping too!
I wonder if it's the connectors on these. Mine had the same issue, saw this video, went back out and reseated the plug just a bit and it started right up. Pretty sure it was this as it had absolutely no pops with starter fluid, so no spark, because of this little module. Ordered a spare in case it's heat related and is just starting to go out. Thanks.
I've got a similar problem on my x530, however will turn-over however quits 2 seconds after releasing starter. Got spark too, although a bit weak. Testing for these in retrospect should be, will it start with starting fluid. If not, pull plug and ground it to frame while cranking, should see some sparks. Might be really small though. Or, you'll feel it.
If you don't, then there is a black kill wire upstream the coils which you can disconnect and retest. If it starts there, then you have a short somewhere along that kill switch path. If not, then it might be the ECU, it might be the ignition coils. There is a way to test between those, however personally not sure what it is. The 2x ignition coils are running $87 EACH abolutely EVERYWHERE, JD store, greenpartstore, etc.
Just saw Daryl's video where he was using these spark testers. Very cool, I'll pick one up even though I don't need one at this point.
Great comment, thanks for helping others.
The battery
on mine is under the seat. If yours is the same what non-painted part are you able to locate to ground to. I's already a bit of pain having to situate the jump cables under the seat that I have to sit on while jump starting and there's not much room to go down below.
The reason you must connect ground cable to engine block is just to get it away from the battery fumes that may be present, connecting cables causes sparks.
That mention of frying the electronic control unit when using a booster battery pack .... but, what about an older battery charger, could this also do damage or not so inclined?
I have the John Deere 100L series. After cutting the grass, I turned off the mower and took a leaf blower to it to blow off grass clipping and any dirt it had on it, then I tried to turn on mower to drive it into the shed and it wouldn't start, not even turn over. Went from starting perfectly fine to completely dead after blowing it off with leaf blower. I'm baffled as to why and how a leaf blower caused my riding mower to die. Have you ever heard of anything like this happening before?
I bet it’s something silly. Make sure brake is pressed hard as you’re trying to start it. Maybe play with the choke a bit in different positions. And last but not least, it’s not out of gas is it? Good luck!
I was just scrolling through the comments and read yours; the exact same thing happened with my john deere. I just finished mowing and blew it off with the leaf blower, now it won't start? What was wrong with your mower if you don't mind me asking. Maybe it will help...
@@chadblack9970 Nothing was wrong with my riding mower. I had just finished cutting the grass, parked it in front of the shed to blow off any dirt and grass clippings before driving it into the shed, blew it off with a blower, since then, it won't turn over, no clicking no anything, dead as a door nail. Tried giving it a jump, nothing! Changed the spark plugs, nothing! I'm lost at what it could be, or how it even happened in the first place.
Any luck fixing this? I’m having the same issue with mine… jumping with charger isn’t working won’t even click or turn over - full of gas, blades disengaged, not in push mode, hr counter on dash is still showing numbers…
same issue here on my s140. dusted and rinsed down like usual. put away, next week comes, gassed up, and cranks but won't start. only have 37 hours on mine.
Love your X540 series of videos. I notice yours smokes a bit at startup. Mine does too. I guess this is normal for this Kawasaki engine?
Thanks for watching my videos. Yes, mine consistently smokes a bit on cold start up. It goes away relatively quickly and I’ve always thought it was just how they were. Good to know yours is similar, thanks.
This looks like my problem on my X540. Going into the dealer tomorrow and see if they will agree.
Wondering if my X540 is suffering from the same failing part. My X540 starts and runs fine, but will randomly die while mowing. Could be 5 minutes in, or an hour. Sometimes it only happens once, on other occasions it will shut down several times. Whenever it does happen, the engine will suddenly shut down like someone turned off the ignition key.
I have tested the seat safety switch and cleaned the pto switch. Both of those seem fine.
I've got the same issue.
@@dansmith3085 I have replaced the ignition control module on my X540. So far, so good. I was able to mow my entire yard which took just over 1 hour. It ran perfect and never shut down. I am cautiously optimistic.
@@jeremymcauliff8485 Thanks for the update. I've been going from not starting, to running all day, to somewhere in between for months. I'll try this fix as soon as I can. If it works, I going to go yell at the dealer. They have wasted months of time and quite a bit of money not fixing the problem.
@@dansmith3085 I have mowed a second time since the ECM replacement. It ran perfectly for another hour without stalling. I'm going to go ahead and call it fixed.
Hello. I have a x125 series. Videos are very easy to comprehend. Thank you. Need to do some work on it. Can you recommend a online store I can purchase original parts? Thank you once more.
Amazon is actually pretty decent with John Deere. You can find genuine OEM stuff fairly easily. All of my videos have links in the video descriptions of the products used in each video. Just follow the links and they’ll get you to the right place. Even if it isn’t the exact product you need, you can follow the link and then click into the seller and they’ll have a whole store that probably has parts for your specific tractor. Thanks for watching!
Thanks very much. I did everything you did, including new module before watching your video. I still can’t get it to fire. Any other trouble shooting I can try? Loved how you worked through the steps that you thought could be the problem. Ron in Maryland.
Thanks for checking the video out Ron and I’m bummed it didn’t help you out. I’d be checking the fuel line and filter because getting fuel might be the most likely thing. If you have spark and it fires and turns over with starter spray, I’d think it’s gotta be a fuel supply problem.
Checking voltage isn’t enough. Mine showed 12v but couldn’t crank the engine. Take your battery out and go to advance auto, batteries plus, etc
I would squirt gas instead of starting fluid I've seen it ruin a crankshaft when it fires especially smaller engines
Oh crazy, I’ve never heard of that. Gas should work great, good tip. Thanks for watching and sub for more!
Wanna stop that oil burning bull ? Change the oil to sae 30 and add a little Lucas. Don’t use the crap from JD . Thanks for the video I just bought an 06 x540 that was doing the same oil burning /puffing at startup and even
afterwards.
Great tip, did it completely fix the problem? I don’t think anything is wrong with the mower, but the puff on cold start is somewhat annoying. Thank you for commenting!
Where is this located again , having a similar problem with a X500 JD ( Update - had fire - so it's my carburetor - thanks this problem you had was a learning experience ) It's good to know not to use a jumper pack on only on the hot side only and to ground the ground side on the mower and not too the battery of the lawnmower . Great tip , just glad I'm not having too tell the owner that he's got to spend a $100.00 for an electronic piece or ( module ) . 👍
The entire X500 series tractors will all be the same and suffer the same problems if jumped incorrectly.
You can spray Starting Fluid right through the Filter. A quick test is to see if the fuel shutoff switch clicks when you turn the key to ON. If it does not, then likely the ECU
The real tips are always in the comments. Thanks for adding
How to know or find out if the clutch might be messed up or not working properly? My blades were shutting off on their own, then the tractor would stall out, then if I got it running again and the blades turned on soon they would stop. Now I cannot get them to turn on at all ever. I replaced the PTO switch, the ignition switch and the selenoid. Disabled the seat switch and brake switch. I saw that a wire on the clutch can get pinched or damaged or the clutch can be free spinning.....
Oh man, that’s a tough one. I think I’d remove the deck and verify that everything is spinning and moving freely when off the mower. If you have a seized pulley or bent spindles or something weird like that, it can instantly stall out the engine as soon as you try to engage the blades. I don’t think it’s that, but I’d want to eliminate that possibility by removing that variable. Seat switch and brake switch was a brilliant move, that’s what I would have done next. Man, I’m not sure where I’d look next.
Phenomenal I had the same issue with no start luckily watched this first and was able put negative on to the frame rather than the battery terminal before I fried the module. Started right up thanks man!
THANKS, neighbor! UA-cam--the infinite back fence.
Thank you for this step by step approach to problem solve.
Where is the Electronic Control Unit on John Deere Lx 277 lawnmower ? It was manufactred around 2000. Thanks.
Anytime I have an ounce of advice. It goes in one ear and out the other
the old batteries used to be 550 cca i think the industry entirely changed cca on all batteries . just irregularities i noticed on my truck and mower batteries when i replaced them
That's why I Always have a "battery tender" (not charger) attached to my battery when not in use, (winter or summer). Never need to jump it.
If I were a smart man, that’s what I would do too.
Whats the part called?
My s100 crank no star gasoline cam out from air filter and i take out the spark plug and have mash gasoline inside the motor
Who knew that a lawn mower would have an ECM. Thanks for the video. I did the same thing and you saved me an expensive mower transport to the dealer.
I felt like an idiot when I realized what I had done. But if my stupidity can save you money, it’s all good. Once you swap the computer, it’ll fire right up like nothing was ever wrong.
LOL right there with ya. Was planning to make the trip tomorrow but thought I'd browse the interwebz a bit today first.. guess those 2 or 3 jumpstarts the past couple of weeks had required literature I neglected to read prior to frying my ECU...
I think I've done the same thing to mine...thanks, lesson learned 😂👌
I see that part you bought is from Minnesota equipment 😁, I usually buy my parts from them too in Rogers,MN they are very helpful, but expensive
Minnesota guy! Yeah I love walking around the showroom and checking out all the machines.
@@suburbanacreage just got mine running, it was the fuel solenoid in the carburetor, I cut the thing off and put it back as a plug, and plugged the wire too, anyway it will not be working
Thanks for sharing that, I would have done the same exact thin but now I won’t!
DC
I have a John Deere XR 30 and it is not starting it is turning over but won't start.. i was using its band it run our of full i added som e new fuel and it won't start i think it may have got some muck in the field tank. I have removed the small fuel filter to see if any fuel is coming out of the tank and nothing was pumping through how do I remove the tank to clean it or empty the tank can you help please.
could be fuel pump is bad before pulling tank check pump also do this remove fuel line from pump gas will flow freely if tank is ok if not go ahead and pull tank
first off if you do not have spark from ign coils replacing plugs is not going to help , also you do not need to have a spark tester to test for spark any jumper wire would work
All true statements! Thanks for watching.
Have you ever had to take off the starter and replace it I need some info on it I have a X540
I got it off
I have the same problem but mine is a gx355 deisel. If anyone can help please?
My D130 will not move forward are backwards
what is the part you replaced called? i have a gt225 And I definitely think I’m having the same issue. I’ve jumped it many times in past (Not grounding the negative to the frame) and now it just cranks but won’t turn over. What would I ask for when ordering the part? Is it pretty easy to replace?
Nice job on trouble shooting!
I put a trickle charger on mine during the winter 0.4 amp.
Ur the goat
If anyone sees my comment here and can provide any assistance.
I have a JD X350, just died on me the other day. put the float charger on the battery (6 years old) and it won't start. Dash lights up and I get a slight click from something when I try and start it. The started does not turn over. I just replaced the battery today, measured 12.5 volts out of it and measured the old one. 12.5 volts. It will not start. If I leave the float charger connected and turn the key to accessory I get lights but if it's just the battery connected. Nothing no light. Started not even budging. I just did plugs, fuel filter, etc maintenance at 100 hrs its at 115 hours. Was running well right before this.
So it’s not even cranking? Am I understanding that correctly? If it’s not cranking, it’s probably something up stream like the park brake switch maybe? There has to be something, my guess electrical, that is preventing it from even attempting to crank. Press the brake firmly and try it perhaps. I might check fuses too, there’s only like 4. Report back your findings and hopefully someone smarter than me is able to help out. Thanks for watching my video Jason!
@@suburbanacreage Yeah not even cranking. Its something electrical yes, my plan is is push it out and clean everything out and check all connections and fuses. Do a front to back trouble shooting. potentially could be a bad new battery, many are bad right out of the gate.
If you’re seeing 12.5 volts though it should at least try to crank I’d think. Let me know what you find because this is something I haven’t encountered before. Sorry the video didn’t help for your situation and best of luck getting it resolved.
@@suburbanacreage Both the old and new battery were putting out 12.5
i put the float charger on the new battery for 4 to 5 days without attempting to start. Then after 5 days on it, it cranked over. Not trusting that batter, returned it and went to the dead zone and got another new one. cranked over no problem. 1/4 batteries new are actually bad and I figured I got a bad one. turns out it was the last one at advance auto that wasn't working as "new"
@Jason S thanks for following up. Glad it was something easy but wow that’s annoying. You’d think a new battery should be a new battery. Happy Mowing buddy!
Np. She stormed out of here. I would love to help really but I seriously I’m not negotiator.
Same situation as mine.
Super helpful
Thanks, check back for more videos coming soon.
When you understood you had no spart to plugs, ( both ) why would you replace spark plugs ? They are what AREN'T recieving electrical signal. Wasted time and money. Glad you went the amputation route. Carry on.
I had purchased the tune up kit that comes with the fuel filter, oil, oil filter, and spark plugs. My plugs were original as far as I knew and since I had brand new ones, I decided to put them in. Sorry if that part was confusing and thanks for the comment.
By now no doubt you have something to mount your phone on
Well, that stinkin' price was cheaper than another machine
It will not move forward are backwards
there is a block with arrows up and down near steering wheel its a safety lock to keep kids ???? from using mower if you have this feature move the block up or down to free machine to move my john deere has this
I guess I need to forward my texts to the correct recipient. 😩😩
It ain’t got no gas in it
Stop mumbling and you dont need stiches poor little baby.
No stitches, had it amputated instead!
