Hi Dr Lang, thank you for this info....it has answered many of my questions. I am a 53 year olf female who is post menopause and I have been struggling with weight loss for some years. No matter what I tried, absolutely nothing worked, not even exercise. I restricted my carbs to almost nothing. I did absolutely no execise as it was winter and I had just had shingles so it was not easy to execise.. well, I lost 8 kilos, (18 pounds), in just 2 months....the easiest weightloss in my entire life...I am now 10 kg lighter and I have been on holiday twice in the interim and have not gained any weight because I have learnt that intermittent fasting (IT) together with low carbs really work and after watching this video, I now realise WHY?, THANK YOU

- the food is actually instructions to our body as to what to do with it and also how to adjust our body weight up or down - it's not the calories that's important it's the hormones behind that if you eat a hundred calories of cookies versus a hundred calories of broccoli the hormonal response in our bodies are completely different - think one step ahead of the calories and go beyond that and say what is controlling that
So glad a friend who cares introduced me to you!!! Growing up, my family automatically fasted, that's how we rolled, meals and FOOD were for energy and nutrition NOT time or socialization specific. I was so healthy without an ounce of fat! For me, moving out into the business world of 9-5 created the feeding time clock and gatherings around food that fed my body more than it needed. My fear of 'need to eat something' remains from my youth yet I have enough reserve today to last months. I am going to save so much money on food I might feel like splurging on a vacation or something fun. No, I don't need to eat 25 small meals a day and I don't need to eat for taste. I need to eat to live rather than live to eat. Thank you Dr. Fung!
In nearly a year on keto with no overt cheating and where I lost 40 pounds in the first couple of months, I've remained +/- within a couple of pounds either way for months. I could lose at most another 10 pounds, but I'm ok where I'm at and within the keto diet (now mostly carnivore) I eat what I please and don't worry about calories. I intermittent fast 16/8 along with a 40 hour fast each week. Maybe I'm just at the weight I should be.
Have you looked into your body composition (body fat to lean muscle mass)? Once I got closer to my GW, I really picked up strength training to gain muscle mass. Really reshaped my body and taught me weight is one thing but composition fine tuned things for me. Congrats and best of luck!
Type 1 diabetic here, been doing alternate day fasting on weekdays 40/8, and intermittent fasting on the weekends, usually 16/8. Diet wise No/very low carbs on weekdays, weekends I'm a little more lenient with carbs but still don't overload on them. I have dropped 20 pounds and lowed my insulin use significantly over 2 months. Over the past 2 years I've slowly gained weight, and upped my insulin until it started to be a problem for my body and bank account (covid was the perfect "excuse" to let my self go). Still in the process of what works for me best and being very careful with my BG levels (sometimes I have no choice but to consume sugar somedays), but all things considered it's already a huge benefit. Not Including the other benefits that come with fasting, mental clarity, more energy, feeling better, lowed alcohol consumption, waking up earlier, staying up later, more productive days, on and off work. I look forward to what will come! Thank you!
When I hit a brick wall on my calorie restriction diet I had great success with alternating regular carb days and low carb days and keeping calories the same 9-10 calories per pound daily. I am not sure on why but it worked!!
I’m excited to buy merch!!! I’m down more 70 lbs this year from water fasting, and taking advice through watching your videos! I have just under 30 lbs to go to reach my goal weight and dropping more that 100lbs. I wonder what size I should order ???
Well, I lost 100 lbs. Some of that while fasting. Low carb, fixed diabetes. After all, I figured out low calories is what helped me to lose weight, and low carb helped my blood sugar. However, last 20 lbs I fucked my thyroid, and no way I can fast anymore. Whenever I try, I'm getting headaches and other very non pleasant symptoms of hypo thyroidism. Be aware of fasting at the end of losing weight. Slowly reducing calories is safer.
That was really good, and your picture at 10:30 about it was very helpful, too! So it's not as simple as calories in versus calories out like a machine, but what controls the rate of that and why. Hormones are sneaky and behind the scenes. Influence those and you influence everything.
The obesity vs. calories graph reminds of the denier debate on the CO2 vs temperature link. The key is causality and not lagged correlations. CO2 may follow temperature and not precede it due to processes such as increase in the ocean sink due to orbital variation induced cooling trends which are then reinforced by the CO2 drop. Calorie intake can increase because of hormone induced obesity driven by the composition and frequency of food intake and not only vice versa. The media and researchers putting out these graphs are leading people around by the nose with claimed effects that they do not prove. Thank you Dr. Fung for spreading the truth.
Another great video. I truly appreciate it. Would you ever consider doing a video answer a question similar to "How do amphetamines such as Aderall/Dexedrine/Vyvance etc. affect weight loss." From what I understand Dexedrine (trade name of dextro-amphetamine) was used to treat obesity in the last.

Thanks dr fung I’ve lost 21 kgs since New Years with fasting and controlling insulin. I can’t imagine not fasting regularly now, I feel 20 years younger. Thanks man, you rock ✊💪
Hi Dr. Fung, I read your book, "The Obesity Factor" a couple of years ago, and I was able to lose 50lbs. I have, unfortunately, gained back about 25 of it. Sometimes, I just get bored with lean meats, and fruits and veggies. I mean, everyone likes a bagel with their coffee once in a while, or some pizza. Working long hours also makes it hard to stick to the plan, as unless you bring your own lunch, snacks, there is usually nothing but junk around to eat. Im starting back on the strict diet again, and we'll see how that works, but man, it sure is frustrating, how some of us gain weight so easily, and others seem to eat whatever they want, and never gain an ounce. I think you're on to something with the hormones. I was taking testosterone shots a few years ago. Man, did I love those! (Medically supervised.) I dropped fifteen pounds without doing anything, and had boundless energy. Then, all of a sudden, Dr. stopped the shots, because he said they could cause heart issues. Well, so can being overweight. I've struggled with this all my life, and I think you are exactly right, we really do not have conscious control of eating. Im 61 now, and it's really hard for me. I eat the right things, and I do exercise, and my body is slow to cooperate. Thanks for all your wonderful information. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Why not eat 2 meals a day within 6-7 hours…no snacking in between and 4-5 hours between the two meals. He always says if you concentrate on Whole Foods and avoid the white stuff you will be fine.
There is no need to think of calorie balance and hormonal dynamics as opposing paradigms for weight loss . If weight loss is the result of expending more calories than one consumes, then it stands to reason that the strategy for best attaining this state is one that engenders a hormonal environment that allows the individual to best achieve this caloric deficit while not being hungry nor lethargic. Low carb, in conjunction with fasting, does this the best because it corrects the hormonal derangement that leads to overconsumption. The calories in/calories out model explains the problem. Low carb, working in tandem with fasting, is the best way to ameliorate the problem for the vast majority of people.
@@phill6983 It's not true, even if absorbed most protein winds up excreted especially if you overeat. You can also excrete fat from the bloodstream when insulin is low, and you will not digest even half of it if you eat a large fatty meal, sometimes much less. You only have so much bile and you have locked limits on how much of any nutrient you can absorb in a given time. Doctors and nutritionists don't mention this because most of them ave no idea wtf they are talking about, but this is the way the body actually works which is another reason fewer meals is much better than more meals.
@@LTPottenger I agree that fewer meals is better. I also think that low carb, almost zero, is also the best way to go. Humans are designed to eat mostly meat and we have done for the entire history of our species. Plants mess with our systems.
Important edit: I did a quick Google search on diabetes in Asia and they do have the most people with it (even per capita). I do want to apologize for my comment, it was misinformed by my part. Also there's a study that do show they are skinny fat and do have more visceral fat than a western which explain why I thought they were skinny. Legitimate question about Asia. I've lived in Japan for roughly 6 months, went to South Korea, Hong Kong, etc. They eat all the time! Yet, the obesity is rare. Why is that?
Some people are genetically coded to be TOFI (thin outside, fat inside). Such people have not much subcutaneous adipose tissue. That subcutaneous adipose tissue quickly fills up. Then, the abdominal adipose tissue fills up. After that, the organs (liver, pancreas) start filling up, and the person now gets high blood glucose and gets diagnose as having type 2 diabetes. So, being thin doesn't mean the person is healthy and doesn't mean the person doesn't have metabolic syndrome diseases. Another issue to consider is that there are people who are genetically coded to handle carbohydrates better than other people. Look up the AMY1 gene.
In simple terms.. 1. Amount of muscle 2. Your organ strengths. 3. Sleep. 4. Level of stress. Then eating a low calorie dense food with a deficit will create a weight loss. More importantly how much muscle you have.
To put weight on depends, what type of food that we are eating and and the food which we have eaten, which type hormones is going activating to; was take home massage.

Great information but it isn't true we only experience hunger due to hormonal influences. Most of us never, ever experience true hunger, and the hunger we do experience can be easily forgotten by exercise or meditation or art or whatever.
Dr. Fung, I have ready your The Diabetes Code and follow your work and this video is great, calories in - calories out is not the whole story. It is hormones. But you left us hanging at the end of the video without saying what to do about it or what action to take :(
Thank you Dr. Fung for this assessment, where a lot of folks are totally wrong: the Energie balance is not under conscious control (Hypothalamus/pituitary glands are the bosses!). As Prof Lustig puts it: the Metabolism controls the behavior, not the other way round. But then what to do ? Mindfulness (impact on the rewarding system but the Hypothalamus remains the boss. Accept it, be aware, slow stabile changes in: the behavior. Naturally. The whole system moves to an other state)
I remember years ago Suzanne Sommers said that you can’t fight your hormones!! She was talking about estrogen and menopause…but she was apparently right in general.
8 years ago I had a full hysterectomy which threw me into a major depression, anxiety, breakdown and had to go on medication and I was already at 226 lbs then even though I had physically demanding jobs and was under Alot of financial stress and after my surgery I gained even more weight. Last and he year before I went through another episode of major depression and anxiety and now on mirtazapine and at my highest weight of 293 lbs. I also have crohns and off work because of that and anxiety. I crave sweets and carbs at night and can't stand how I feel and look so will this way of eating help me. I also take bioidentical hormones of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. My sleep has improved but low energy, no desire or interest in doing much, etc
Thank you, once again, for an informative video. Lately, I've been hearing a lot about PSMF (protein sparing modified fasts). Would you consider doing a video on this topic? Thank you :)
Dr. Fung - I’m learning so much... love your videos!! Do you have any videos on inflammation in the body? What causes the inflammation/how to get rid of the problem?!
Thank you Dr. Fung! Thank you for preaching the truth! You have helped me successfully drop well over 65lbs of body fat and am FINALLY living a healthy life and feeling comfortable in my own skin! Keep fighting the good fight!
Thanx tons Dr.Fung. Your explanation is really great. I was frustrated and stuck with the same concept of calorie deficit nd exercise. Need to learn more about hormone game. This is an eye opener.
This is so true. I stalled for a month and could figure out why. I was low carb and had a safe calorie deficit. I was testing my insulin levels and noticed that my insulin levels had increased from 10 to 19. I was consuming large amount of steak, which has the same insulting impact as pasta. That is when I learned about the insulin index of foods. I love my steak but it makes you produce a lot of insulin. I did a quick 24 hour fast, retested, and my insulin was back at 10. I dropped the 5lbs that would move and broke that plateau.
So, understanding body weight is a function of hormones, why don't doctors treat obesity hormonally? My genious doctor's plan of treatment was that I eat less and exercise more. I have weighed the same within 3 pounds, for 24 years!
@@loosecannon6142 Spouting your nonsense in these comments again? Try looking at the real science behind what Dr Fung is saying rather than trying to sound clever by quoting the laws of thermodynamics because doing that just makes you look stupid lol.

Dr. Fung, in a previous video you had mentioned a patient of yours where although very dedicated in fasting took 6 months to start showing a loss due to metabolic syndrome. Can you please do a video expanding on this issue? Great education and content - keep them coming!
Yeah... seen many docs talk about you having to get healthy first. Your liver empties out fat and you get rid of the fat in your other organs
Which video was this ? Can you tell me the name of the titles?

This has never happened in all of my years of weight loss attempts. The best part is that I'm no longer experiencing hunger and cravings. I almost have to force myself to eat during my OMAD routine. Thank you!

Understanding the role that insulin plays in weight gain has been life changing. Thank you for your fabulously informative videos, they are gold. 🙏
Hi Dr Lang, thank you for this info....it has answered many of my questions. I am a 53 year olf female who is post menopause and I have been struggling with weight loss for some years. No matter what I tried, absolutely nothing worked, not even exercise. In February of this year, I discovered your channel and I started intermittent fasting, eating only one meal a day which was made up of a really big green salad and some protein. I restricted my carbs to almost nothing. I did absolutely no execise as it was winter and I had just had shingles so it was not easy to execise.. well, I lost 8 kilos, (18 pounds), in just 2 months....the easiest weightloss in my entire life...I am now 10 kg lighter and I have been on holiday twice in the interim and have not gained any weight because I have learnt that intermittent fasting (IT) together with low carbs really work and after watching this video, I now realise WHY?, THANK YOU
Thank You Doc for helping me realize I was overeating! The weight is coming off with an evening meal & dessert only!
& no longer eating 6-8 times a day!

Another fantastic, easy to understand video that will definitely help with not only weight loss, but overall body fat reduction. Thanks Jason
- the food is actually instructions to our body as to what to do with it and also how to adjust our body weight up or down
- it's not the calories that's important it's the hormones behind that if you eat a hundred calories of cookies versus a hundred calories of broccoli the hormonal response in our bodies are completely different
- think one step ahead of the calories and go beyond that and say what is controlling that
So glad a friend who cares introduced me to you!!!
Glad you are where you wish to be weight-wise. But that sounds like a lot of deprivation to be plateaued and not lose anymore.
I never feel deprived eating fatty meats. Even if only once a day

Have you looked into your body composition (body fat to lean muscle mass)? Once I got closer to my GW, I really picked up strength training to gain muscle mass. Really reshaped my body and taught me weight is one thing but composition fine tuned things for me. Congrats and best of luck!
Have you tried walking , 10,000 steps per day, and occasional FIIT exercise. Both increase HGH and may help with your plateau.
Dr. Jason Fung thanks for sharing incredible information. The way you explain information awesome. God bless you
Type 1 diabetic here, been doing alternate day fasting on weekdays 40/8, and intermittent fasting on the weekends, usually 16/8.

Congratulations 🎈🎊🎉

Dr. Fung, around 1:25 idk if you want to edit the pop up that covers your face. Just a thought. Hope you’re having a great day
Another great video.

Look into bullet proof coffee it may help you get into OMAD 🤠
add some 36+ hour fasts
Why not eat 2 meals a day within 6-7 hours…no snacking in between and 4-5 hours between the two meals. He always says if you concentrate on Whole Foods and avoid the white stuff you will be fine.
Dr. Fung thank you for the information on IF. My A1 C was at 7.7, last A1C check a week ago 3.8.

You are too funny. I literally laughed out loud. Glad that dying less often thing is working out for you! 😂
Dr. Fung appreciate your knowledge & delivery. You have helped thousands of us.
Agreed.
Thanks for explaining this.
Most of what you eat goes in one hole and out the other. Only sugar is digested nearly 100%.
@@LTPottenger meat and fat is pretty much fully digested too. Isn't it mostly just fibre/cellulose that isn't digested?
Dr. Jaspn Fung THE BEST to listen to my fav for sure
Let's make it viral
@@kimberlycooper4170 damn I need to read about that gene, cause I literally can gain a kg at day if I eat pizza or tacos 😩

1. Amount of muscle
2. Your organ strengths.
3. Sleep.
4. Level of stress.

The statement: “The Food” is the instruction to our bodies. 🤔
