    Hormones. I had to keep my insulin level low...which is everyone else's (slim people) normal. I had to fast 3 days in order to lose weight. I lost 80+ lbs with fasting and eating ketovore in 4-5 months. I lost this weight with zero working out and zero loose skin. Finally I know how to control my weight. I thank Almighty God and Jason Fung.

    This 75 y/o retired nurse has been fat since menopause. I was thin as a child through my 30s. I have metabolic syndrome with BMI of 33, osteoarthritis with mobility impairment, hypertension & flirting with a borderline A1C. I had watched Michael Palan on BBC a few years ago when he did intermittent fasting but there was limited information. I came across your videos by chance. I stared IF on 7/6 with the 8/16 eating plan and no snacks. I cut out sugary drinks, sweet rolls, flour-anything that spikes my insulin. I’m eating a non-keto low carb diet using fish, eggs, chicken & beans/lentils (pulses) for protein & the fiber. My first long fast for me of 30 hrs. caused a diuresis of 7 lbs. I drank lots of water some with salt. I felt really good the next day & my chronic joint pain in my neck, knees & feet is gone. I haven’t taken an Aleve since before the fast. Before, I took 1-2 daily. So I continue the 8/16 as my regular meal plan & will do two 36 hr fasts twice a week to get some autophagy benefits until my weight is at baseline. Thank you for a plan that’s clear to follow.

No matter what I tried, absolutely nothing worked, not even exercise. I restricted my carbs to almost nothing. I did absolutely no execise as it was winter and I had just had shingles so it was not easy to execise.. well, I lost 8 kilos, (18 pounds), in just 2 months....the easiest weightloss in my entire life...I am now 10 kg lighter and I have been on holiday twice in the interim and have not gained any weight because I have learnt that intermittent fasting (IT) together with low carbs really work and after watching this video, I now realise WHY?, THANK YOU

    - it's not the calories that's important it's the hormones behind that if you eat a hundred calories of cookies versus a hundred calories of broccoli the hormonal response in our bodies are completely different

    Type 1 diabetic here, been doing alternate day fasting on weekdays 40/8, and intermittent fasting on the weekends, usually 16/8. Diet wise No/very low carbs on weekdays, weekends I'm a little more lenient with carbs but still don't overload on them. I have dropped 20 pounds and lowed my insulin use significantly over 2 months. Over the past 2 years I've slowly gained weight, and upped my insulin until it started to be a problem for my body and bank account (covid was the perfect "excuse" to let my self go). Still in the process of what works for me best and being very careful with my BG levels (sometimes I have no choice but to consume sugar somedays), but all things considered it's already a huge benefit. Not Including the other benefits that come with fasting, mental clarity, more energy, feeling better, lowed alcohol consumption, waking up earlier, staying up later, more productive days, on and off work. I look forward to what will come! Thank you!

      Well, I lost 100 lbs. Some of that while fasting. Low carb, fixed diabetes. After all, I figured out low calories is what helped me to lose weight, and low carb helped my blood sugar. However, last 20 lbs I fucked my thyroid, and no way I can fast anymore. Whenever I try, I'm getting headaches and other very non pleasant symptoms of hypo thyroidism. Be aware of fasting at the end of losing weight. Slowly reducing calories is safer.

    That was really good, and your picture at 10:30 about it was very helpful, too! So it's not as simple as calories in versus calories out like a machine, but what controls the rate of that and why. Hormones are sneaky and behind the scenes. Influence those and you influence everything.

    The obesity vs. calories graph reminds of the denier debate on the CO2 vs temperature link. The key is causality and not lagged correlations. CO2 may follow temperature and not precede it due to processes such as increase in the ocean sink due to orbital variation induced cooling trends which are then reinforced by the CO2 drop. Calorie intake can increase because of hormone induced obesity driven by the composition and frequency of food intake and not only vice versa. The media and researchers putting out these graphs are leading people around by the nose with claimed effects that they do not prove. Thank you Dr. Fung for spreading the truth.

    Hi Dr. Fung, I read your book, "The Obesity Factor" a couple of years ago, and I was able to lose 50lbs. I have, unfortunately, gained back about 25 of it. Sometimes, I just get bored with lean meats, and fruits and veggies. I mean, everyone likes a bagel with their coffee once in a while, or some pizza. Working long hours also makes it hard to stick to the plan, as unless you bring your own lunch, snacks, there is usually nothing but junk around to eat. Im starting back on the strict diet again, and we'll see how that works, but man, it sure is frustrating, how some of us gain weight so easily, and others seem to eat whatever they want, and never gain an ounce.
    I think you're on to something with the hormones. I was taking testosterone shots a few years ago. Man, did I love those! (Medically supervised.) I dropped fifteen pounds without doing anything, and had boundless energy. Then, all of a sudden, Dr. stopped the shots, because he said they could cause heart issues. Well, so can being overweight. I've struggled with this all my life, and I think you are exactly right, we really do not have conscious control of eating. Im 61 now, and it's really hard for me. I eat the right things, and I do exercise, and my body is slow to cooperate.
    Thanks for all your wonderful information. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

    There is no need to think of calorie balance and hormonal dynamics as opposing paradigms for weight loss . If weight loss is the result of expending more calories than one consumes, then it stands to reason that the strategy for best attaining this state is one that engenders a hormonal environment that allows the individual to best achieve this caloric deficit while not being hungry nor lethargic. Low carb, in conjunction with fasting, does this the best because it corrects the hormonal derangement that leads to overconsumption. The calories in/calories out model explains the problem. Low carb, working in tandem with fasting, is the best way to ameliorate the problem for the vast majority of people.

    • @LTPottenger
      @LTPottenger 3 роки тому +2

      @@phill6983 It's not true, even if absorbed most protein winds up excreted especially if you overeat. You can also excrete fat from the bloodstream when insulin is low, and you will not digest even half of it if you eat a large fatty meal, sometimes much less. You only have so much bile and you have locked limits on how much of any nutrient you can absorb in a given time. Doctors and nutritionists don't mention this because most of them ave no idea wtf they are talking about, but this is the way the body actually works which is another reason fewer meals is much better than more meals.

Also there's a study that do show they are skinny fat and do have more visceral fat than a western which explain why I thought they were skinny.

      Some people are genetically coded to be TOFI (thin outside, fat inside). Such people have not much subcutaneous adipose tissue. That subcutaneous adipose tissue quickly fills up. Then, the abdominal adipose tissue fills up. After that, the organs (liver, pancreas) start filling up, and the person now gets high blood glucose and gets diagnose as having type 2 diabetes.
      So, being thin doesn't mean the person is healthy and doesn't mean the person doesn't have metabolic syndrome diseases.
      Another issue to consider is that there are people who are genetically coded to handle carbohydrates better than other people. Look up the AMY1 gene.

That is when I learned about the insulin index of foods. I love my steak but it makes you produce a lot of insulin. I did a quick 24 hour fast, retested, and my insulin was back at 10.
