Oh man series 1 is a gem - completely different from the rest of the series - ignore the haters - make your own conclusion
Agreed, I love season 1 personally.
Season 1 isn't bad. It's just...different. It feels like a different show.
It would've been better as a stand alone series that was separate from the other 3 seasons.
What spoiled it for me, was Brian Blessed!
He's not an actor, he's an OVER-actor!! 🤣
The dynamic was wrong stupid Edmund and wise Baldrick, good series though
They brought in Ben Elton after season one, it's why they are so different
@@jamespasifull3424 It's treason then
You missed off the end credits gag. The song changes in every episode of season 2 and there's always a sight gag with the minstrel.
Actually, the reason he says Bob the way he does is to combat his stutter. It's just a bonus that it sounds funny.
A QI watcher too huh? Stephen Fry's impression is fantastic.
Thanks bud, it does sound funny I did enjoy that =]
A mate of mine married a woman called Kate, she got to put up with us (and him) calling her Bob all the time
He does the same thing with Bean.
I miss Rik Mayall. Lord Flashheart was ace. Have you watched The Young Ones? Classic British comedy. 😂
Bottom live is possibly the best comedy
@@paultaylor781 I was lucky enough to see Bottom 2 Live in Cardiff. I went with my parents, my brother and a group from my mother's work. Amazing experience.
Rik Mayall - oh so missed. Everything he did was compulsive viewing.
@@chrismaggs I saw that one LIVE too. :D I don't recall where we went as I was only a kid at the time.
Well, if nothing else, season 1 has the great Brian Blessed as the King. That alone is worth the watch.
The first season is fine, it has some funny moments and jokes, I don't get why everyone is so down on it. :) But yeah, every season of Blackadder is self contained, you can watch them in any order really.
I agree, idk where all the hive-minds came from that suggested doing first season last. Probably they are ignorant of medieval history.
I think it was how Atkinson played the role in S1 compared to the others, he was much more of a snivelling awkward weasel in S1, even being worse then Arnold Rimmer. The other three were fantastic though
It's not that people are down on season 1, it's because Blackadder and Baldrick in season one their roles are reversed from the ones in season 2 onwards, Season 1 has Blackadder as the dimwitted idiot that the piss is taken out off and Baldrick is the smart one looking out for him it was felt by Richard Curtis, Rowan himself who co-wrote season one and Ben Elton when he joined for season 2 that it would be better for Blackadder to be the smart one taking the piss out of someone else and Baldrick being the dim one, that's how it was for the remaining seasons, and much better for it.
@@Terranova667 ..Blackadder is devious in season 1. It doesnt matter what reason is given, it should have been watched first. Sorry, im not one of the hive-minds.
AGREED. The first season is great.
The first series/season is great. I'm not sure why so many people dislike it. The characters are just different in personality. The "The Queen of Spain's Beard" episode is hilarious.
The witchsmeller pursuivant is my favourite.
BLOODY MILK! SILENCE GRUMBLEDOOK!
I agree can't understand why people don't like it
There are some good moments but it's not a great introduction to Blackadder because they basically went back to the drawing board with the characters after the lukewarm reception to the first series and everything else that followed that is just so different.
Definitely the best episode of season 1!
The first series is just as clever and funny as the others, only difference is the character dynamics and personalities. I'd recommend checking it out without a doubt.
The reason to watch the first season is to see how the character became who he turned into for the follow on seasons. It does make sense.
The first season was still trying to find its feet/direction, but it makes up for it by having Brian Blessed. Also miriam margoyles is in season 2
first was brilliant
Been so long since I've seen the first series i forgot that Brian blessed was in it
CHISWICK, FRESH HORSES
I pretty much only rewatch the first season for Brian Blessed and Miriam Margoyles!
@@jcstato9048 Rik Mayall and Ploppy also cameo in series 1
I really love the first season too, although continuity-wise, it isn't a problem to miss it. It is very different in feel. I would certainly recommend going back after you finish series 4, as it has some great moments.
Brian Blessed, Miriam Margolis, Jim Broadbent, Frank Finlay just a few of the superb performers!
It definitely has good parts, but Rowan Atkinson's character was just a bit dumb. They were right to switch he and Baldrick's intelligence levels going forward.
The Spanish infanta
"Thanks, bridesmaid, like the beard. Gives me something to hang onto!"
I don't feel it's necessary to skip season 1. Go for it!
the first season is amazing. One of the best
Flashheart appeared in Blackadder a few times. He was played by a brilliant comedian, the late great Rik Mayall. He is worth googling & if you can, take the opportunity to watch some of his work - The Young Ones (TV series) & the movie "Right Said Fred" spring to mind. Enjoy! ❤
The first season is brilliant, but requires a level of education some people don't have. If you don't know both Shakespeare and British history, the jokes fall a little flat.
Some ppl are ignorant of medieval history, i love season 1
Even knowing the history, season 1 fell short.
@@quantumhelix8668 ..your opinion, i thought se 4 was the least funny, way too long winded.
@@rullmourn1142 S4 was my 2nd least favourite.
My personal tastes on BlackAdder are
S2, S3, S4, S1.
@@quantumhelix8668 ..ya, I tend to like all things medieval no matter how good or bad, they are. My choices are the same as yours except switch 4 and 1.
Yes This definitely got even better as the seasons progress! Like so many other comedy series but yes you have to watch first episodes to see the characters develop! Its so important ! Like so many long running classic comedies the script writing is awesome. For me this is Rowan Atkinson at his best 😁😄😆 love this one with the late Rik Mayall ! 👌
That is awesome, I am excited to continue with this show. Rowan is hilarious and so is Rik =]
@@AfterWorkReactions Am Enjoying your channel guys !😊 Good stuff 👌Your laugh makes me laugh more too 😆
The last few minutes of the final episode of series 4 is classed as one of the most touching endings of all U.K tv which happened by accident (see a documentary about the series) and don’t miss out the extra Christmas special episode where Blackadder is Scrooge.
season 1 is amazing what they talking about
All that's 'wrong' with series one is just that Blackadder is the 'dumb' son of the king who aspires to be great but fails, whereas for all the rest he's witty and condescending.
To this day, my wife and i still say Bob like this.
My niece is called Kate so I often call her Bob for short. Even better she actually answers to it.
I LOVE THE 1st Season!! Omg hahahah XD guess I'm one of the few. *shrug*
i like it too its pretty good just not as good as the rest
me too.. its my favourite. .. shame
CHISWICK, FRESH HORSES
You ride a horse rather less well than another horse would.
it was the best, think ben elton got in on the 2nd series and spoilt it for me
I agree with some others, still check out Season 1 after the others. In that one, most of the humour concentrates on changing history a little bit for comedic effect. Blackadder's character is quite different in Season 1 compared to the other seasons as well.
Thanks for the info bud!
@@AfterWorkReactions His character is more like Mr. Bean, than the later Blackadders.
Season 1 didn’t have Ben Elton as a writer and it really shows the difference.
There are still some good bits from season 1 (and a lot of Shakespearean misquotes) but I suspect it would be everyone’s least favourite season.
If only to see Mad Gerald, A ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
@@AfterWorkReactions The first season is also filmed on location. The BBC gave it a second season on condition of a smaller budget, so they had to move into a studio, which was a good move especially given that sit coms thrive on characters being trapped in a situation.
Lmao, love when Flashheart just headbutts Percy in the face, XD!
I loved season one, I can still remember when it first aired, it explains his name....’the black vegetable..... and don’t forget the late great Peter Cook ,accidentally beheaded by Edmund...uh ..oh Richard the third... and of coarse Brian Blessed.... can still hear his booming voice ...👍😂
Each season is a different time in history.
Thanks bud!
Oh you've got to watch season 1 of The Black Adder.. It lays the foundation for the entire subsequent seasons. He starts out on the top of the heap as a sniveling prince of the realm, each season he falls further down the latter. I found the first season on the silly side but without it you don't know the context of the following seasons. prince-minor noble- servant to the prince-Army officer. it just make everything make sense.
Season 1 is brilliant. It's a meme to avoid it, not anything sensible. Series 1 has the best cast too.
Don't skip the end credits.
Yes, you were looking for stuff to happen on the closing credits , but it's the lyrics at the end that are the feature.
The theme tune is copyrighted though, so he can't show it.
Season One was incredible!!! Brilliant. Anyone who said it was bad is an idiot.
I can't understand why so many people don't like season one, yes it's different to the rest but it's absolutely hilarious in my opinion, you are missing out if you don't watch it
I like season one too. It's a bit different with Edmund being the idiot and Baldrick the brains but still good in it's own way. I think the infanta episode with Marian Margolyes and Jim Broadbent is my favourite. aka Professor Sprout and Professor Slughorn.
@@speleokeir the witchsmeller is my favourite, 30 years later if someone asks me if I know about something I still have to raise my hand and say "No, I don't"
Shouldn't have skipped season 1 , whoever said so are fools
Each season is stand alone as they cover different time periods throughout history.
Yessssssss Blackadder another classic series. Well played for grabbing hold of it. Each series gets better and better. Rik Mayall has Lord Flashheart is hilarious
This show is great so far man. I was excited to see Rik was in it =]
@@AfterWorkReactions glad ur enjoying it 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 my favourite appearance in this from Rik is in series 4. Classic episode also. Enjoy
You'll love Tom Baker, (a previous Dr Who) as a weird sea-captain, in a future episode!! 🤣
Spot Lord Glover from Game Of Thrones. The first series is great if you know about the history of the end of the Plantagenet dynasty. Series 2 is better because intelligent sarcastic Blackadder is preferable to Mr. Bean style Blackadder.
Season 1 has some really good moments, it was just filmed differently. Also there is some character developments, sort of in reverse. In season 1 Baldrick was the smartest guy in the room, and Sir Black Adder was a dolt.
I like the first season. I think each season he goes higher and higher up the social ladder. So first season he is a weedy weasel but it's funny because it has an alternative history to how Richard III dies
The same applies to Men Behaving badly if you ever get around to watchng that, they made a big change in series 2 which saved the show from obscurity.
No no no, men behaving badly started brilliantly and went to shit the second season, and eventually grew on you.
Yeah men behaving badly started well. Although Gary and Tony obviously have more chemistry, I think dermot was still pretty good
Thanks for the info bud.
Prefer Morrissey over Enfield
I loved Season 1. I feel like it is a little different, but I feel there were some superior things about it. Some superior things about the following seasons.
Season 1 has an amazing theme tune, a huge budget with a lot of location shooting in scotland, season 2 has a DIFFERENT song at the end of every episode
1st season of Blackadder is awesome :( It's just a different writer and sense of humour.
season 1 was good and great dress and set design....ignore these feckin heathens
The first series is great, but leaned more heavily on British history. More of it is likely to go over your head, but it's worth a look sometime.
My sisters cat is called Bob, and I always call him it in the Blackadder 'Bob! version
This particular Bob, is played by the same actress doing the same gag in one of the later Adders, World War Adder.
First season was great, can't see why not
Miranda Richardson as Queen Elizabeth and Mariam Margoles as the Spanish Infanta-perfection!!
I enjoyed season two very much, however
I liked season one even more
Dude playing Baldrick once went down to Titanic with James Cameron.
In the 4th season, set during World War 1, there is an episode that revisits the character of "Bob".
Yay ! Glad you’re enjoying it at last 😄🤗 looking forward to some more hehee 😁
Season 1 is different from the rest of the series, but it's still great, I am like the greatest Blackadder fan ever, been watching them constantly since 1991, and I have them all on VHS, but it is fine if you watch them afterwards, since each season is a different story and period, but don't listen to anyone who says season 1 isn't worth it, they're giving you bad info.
Perfectly reasonable to start with series 2, but you should go back to the first series. It is not "rubbish", it is different. It won an international Emmy at the time, and it was very popular, a second series was eagerly awaited. Changes were demanded because it was too expensive, with a large cast and lots of location filming. They also changed the nature of the character of Blackadder himself, and that I think explains why a lot of people can't accept the original version, they are so attached to the later one, so there is this idea that it was a failure, it was not. I think if the other three had not been made, people would look back on it as a tragedy that there was only one series.
These videos are keeping me sane in lockdown. More Blackadder!
Thanks bud! Will do, take care.
We've been home schooling our kids due to schools closing in the UK, and every time we attempt maths with our daughter, we end up quoting this episode ' some beans', ' a very small casserole ' is comic genius. :)
That is awesome! LOL
I had and still have a massive crush on the Queen in this! 😍😍😍😍
Don't skip the first season. It is the beginning of the story. And it's funny too. It's just different humor.
Got like 60 eps of fools and horses left still... Loving these videos still... They're priceless🤣
I actually love the first season, but it is definitely a good idea to watch 2-4 first and then go back. The first season isn't bad in my opinion, it's just got a different vibe to the rest of it, and Edmund's character is very different, but it's still hilarious! Love your reactions by the way, especially your infectious laugh!😁
I have heard that a few times, to watch season 1 last. Thanks bud I appreciate it, take care =]
Never skip season 1. It's has some of the funniest episodes. The Queen of Spain beard, the witchsmeller. The baldrick blackadder dynamic is reversed in someways. Other wise it's very similar.
Those comments were stupid it's a great season.
Definitely recommend to watch and react to the first season!
Oh, definitely include the Christmas special somewhere in your watch list for this show (doesn't really matter where). Excellent spinoff episode.
The first season is awesome it’s just different to the others because Baldrick and blackadders roles are reversed (or they’re reversed in all the others)
Blackadder season 4. The flying training scene aka the 20 minuters. And the court martial 2 of the best scenes written. Another classic was the mine field scene amazing written.
The theme tune is one of the best parts! 😂
The second season was half written by Ben Elton who is a very popular comedian.
Yes! Was looking forward to this :) You should try to listen to the end credits song, they're different every episode and quite funny.
Thank you, I have been hearing so much hype about this show so I am happy to be watching it now. Thanks for the tip about the song, take care!
Watch the 1st series a couple of times and it grows on you , think they were testing the waters when it was produced . Have a look at "Allo Allo" Josh well worth the look
Season 1 is great. Just different than the rest
When I was a kid my parents had only two casette tapes for long car rides (yes it was a long time ago), and this episode was one of them. I find myself reciting all the lines along with it when I watch it these days!
I actually love season 1, although Blackadder has such a different character in that one I can understand why people say skip it haha
Season 1 is hilarious
Whaaa? Reaction to one of my favorite shows + a Powerpuff t-shirt?? Instant subs!
This has made my night seeing you react to this. Blackadder is my all time favourite comedy. Superb 👌🏼
Hi mate, the reason why people are suggesting to skip season 1, is because there is continuity between 2-4 where although Blackadder himself is different in each season, he has the same traits in 2-4. In season 1 he isn’t bright, whereas 2-4 he is cunning and trying to get rich and get out of work. Anyways, enjoy!
Yup I agree and Baldrick actually did have the cunning plans in season 1 :)
I would recommend you still watch series one I love it, but I remember it when it was first shown so hadn't seen the later ones which 2 and 4 are the best of all
10:37 I kept hearing her say 'wrinkle' rather than 'winkle'.
18:33 If you do see the first series, you'll understand.
33:04 In the Tudor period? Among other things they thought that the cure for jaundice was to be exposed to red light.
Alive and dead, Rik Mayall would be my first choice to play The Joker.
I just discovered your channel mate, really brings a smile to
My face. I've always really disagreed with everyone about the first series of Blackadder. It still
Looks brilliant, it's funny as hell and just absolutely classic. If you don't do a video, I highly recommend watching it anyway.
Cupping... leeches, blood letting and cupping.. ;)
Love your work 😀
kev, from Liverpool great to see how you see our comedy and how it translates, big love
after season one the BBC was going to cancel the show due to the cost of production. The writers and actors stream lined the production costs and focused on the scripts and it became one of the cheapest shows to produce.
Season one is more like a comedy drama you could say, but it's still great, the following seasons they had Ben Elton who added more jokes.
Blackadder is one of the best shows ever made
The first season is really good
In the first series, Blackadder was the fool and Baldrick was the clever one. It almost didn't come back for a second series! The formula worked so much better the other way around, plus it contained some of the best of British actors too.
To each his own. Obviously, more than one person must have liked the first season or there wouldn't be a second season. I'm with you. Don't be in such a damn hurry to enjoy yourself.
Hiya Josh, just ignore season 1 of Blackadder, even at the time the average audience was only 500,000, them days the least amount was 8 million but up to 25 million viewers, you'll maybe laugh at 1 or 2 things that were said in season 1, where as in all the other episodes you'll be howling with laughter, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
First season almost demands that you have a working knowlegde of Shakespeare. Plays a lot on his plays.
So good. I'd recommend watch in this order.
Series 2
Series 3
Series 4
Blackadder's Christmas Carol
Series 1
Back and Forth
The Cavalier Years
Thanks bud much appreciated!
People are stupid. The Elfante episode one of the best. Also the "I killed them all with a fruit knife" is tops
Blackadder is one of the all time KINGS of British comedy. I feel you'll really enjoy it as it goes on.
And skipping the first season is fine, on top of it being kind of weak as the character had not been down pat, each season is like 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' in it's generational. Only they never really tie in to each other, each is very stand-alone-y.
I'm not sure if you remember people saying in comments: Lord Flashheart is played by Rik Mayall from Bottom
You gotta do The Young Ones. It’s the first TV show of Rik Mayall, Ade Edminson and the writers or Blackadder, Bottom etc
always laugh at Percy's "My, what an original perfume"
also, seen this so many times, and only just noticed baldrick walking around with the arrow still in him :P
Love Blackadder. Including the first series, which ironically was the most expensive to produce, being filmed in a number of outdoor locations as well as the studio. I would recommend at least watching the first episode of series 1 as it sets the scene for the whole dynasty. I loved Rowan Atkinsons portrayal of the first Blackadder, more for his mannerisms & physical comedy relying less on one liners like all the following series. Also, how Blackadder & Baldrick's roles were almost reversed.
the late great Rik Mayall totally steals the show as Lord Flash heart
Odd. The first season is my favourite. It's pure madness, and like the later seasons, it's taking the piss out of the time period (1400's) making fun of the customs and supersticions of the time.
Certainly worth watching.
The first season IS NOT BAD. Just watch it last. It's actually got some really clever jokes in and of course the Great Brian Blessed. It also perfectly sets up the premise of the entire concept of blackadder.
FYI The Bob character (played by the same actress) turns up in an episode of Upstart Crow which is also definitely worth checking out. Written by the same people as Blackadder and David Mitchell plays Shakespeare.
I watched the first season when it first came out. Its different but still very good.. Main difference is the role reversal of baldrick and Blackadder. Still good and I still like series 2 to. 4
