This caused a stir when it first came out with many claiming it was disrespecful of the loss of life in WWI but that was quickly shot down as the veterans loved it.
People getting offended on behalf of others? I'm sure glad that that's a thing of the past...
@@surfwidow I think the 'Lions led by donkeys' phrase was first coined in the Crimean War but the events of the Boer War and WW1 ensured it never fell out of use...
Respect btw from me to your ancestors who served and sacrificed- thanks in part to you, they are not forgotten. My great-grandfather lost a hand in the fighting, but I don't really know who else in my family was in WW1.
@@cerisambrook7692 quietly ignoring the fact that, for the most part, the people leading certainly where not donkeys...
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
@@dernwine Perhaps not, you can't really generalise all the officership that way, but perceptually the 'top brass' were seen this way throughout these conflicts
I think Blackadder's "I've got a degree from the university of life, a diploma from the school of hard knocks and 3 gold stars from the kindergarten of getting the shit kicked out of me" line is one of his best.
That was a great line =]
I love the explanation of what to do when you step on a mine.
The first episode of Goes Forth establishes a structure with higher stakes than the other Blackadders, which I think is one of the reasons this one is held in high regard. The others are about social climbing and cartoonish skullduggery, whereas here there is the looming threat of the very real "big push".
Even though Captain Blackadder has some of the familiar family traits, he's one of us. We all like to think that we're a little smarter than the next guy, but in the end we're all bound to the same fate, and our fate so often seems to be in the hands of loonies.
General Haige's plan was murderous for both sides.
Currently. So. Relevant.
I agree this season has a different feel to it than the other seasons. I have enjoyed the others though.
8:30 Probably a shoutout to one of the greatest series Melchett and Percy's actors did together: Jeeves & Wooster, about an upper-class twit and his genius butler. Shenanigans ensue.
Melchett and George. Percy and Darling are played by Tim Mcinnerney.
Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie! They were a comedy team to begin with and had great chemistry. At first they didn't want to do Jeeves and Wooster out of respect to the material, but in the end realized that there was nobody better for the parts than themselves.
Jeeves is smart and suave, unlike Melchitt, but Bertie Wooster is pretty much the same sort of upper-class twit as George.
Can't wait for you to review the court martial with Meltchett's speckled jim. The whole scene never fails to make me howl with laughter. "Who's the judge?" "Baaaaaahh....." "I'm dead"
When general melchet said, while sitting having dinner:-That blackadder is a fine chap, his uncle bertie and I used to break wind for our college 🤣
SEASON.4 is the best season done with comedy and dignity well done to those boys who went over the top and well done to blackadder who showed great respect to all who fought in both world wars :)
All my friends at school would talk about this when it was first on. It used to be 9pm on a Friday night if I remember rightly. The same slot was then filled with Red Dwarf series 3 - another absolute belter from my teenage years!
Being pedantic here, but it was Thursday nights and everyone was talking about it at school on the Friday morning. Memorably, after the ‘Flashheart’ episode, the word “woof,” accompanied by a thrust of the hips, was performed all through the next day... probably across the entire country.
There was a lad at boarding school with surname darling joke never got old I saw him a couple of years after I left school and and greeted him with hello darling 😂😂😂
the guy who plays Baldrick is also a present of a tv program called time team you might want to check him out you might be shocked by the differance
THE YOUNG ONES season 2. The WILDEST comedy you’ll ever see
You always post at the best times Josh ^w^ I am exhausted from school and have a mountain of revision waiting for me later in the evening but I came on here for a much needed break and here you are reacting to my one of my favourite series
Awesome bud, good luck with all your school work!
Speaking from over here in London as an Englishman...this series in particular is universally regarded here as one of the greatest British TV shows of all time 😁😁😁
allo allo is another classic
I don't think it's necessary funnier than 2 and 3 (which are also hilarious) but it's more relatable because it deals with the modern world and it's also sprinkled with anti-war sentiment that is very popular.
Sorry but a disagree the writing was getting into its stride in series 3 and just knocked it out the park with 4 I mean the only bad joke in the whole series is Baldrick's final about getting a spelk but even then it's more the massive shift in tone which I never thought a wacky comedy could pull off
Blackadder Goes Forth was so cleverly written and sympathetic to those times and creating a comedy out of that was genius. It was so well handled by Curtis and Elton and all involved. Great writing! My favourite series out of them all!
....also the return of flash heart!!
Fun fact, at the end, the soldiers marching was my old Army Battalion (3rd Royal Anglian Regiment) who were entra's for the show. I vaguely remember them filming.
Accurate for the type of General leadership priority’s at the time. Before this, WW1. Failure to have Moustaches in the army could get you in prison.
Episode 4, private plane is possibly the best episode out of all of Blackadder.
And we all know why 😁
Was always fan of the ep. General Hospital, that one kills me every time
@@tomhartland818 I second that. Private Plane has my most favourite comedy scene, but the spy one was funnier overall
Corporal Punishment is the one that gets me every time. Captain Blackadder is totally and utterly guilty...(turns page)...of nothing more than trying to do his duty under difficult circumstances
@@PrinceOfCats5 Deny everything Baldrick
🤣🤣 Stephen fry is just perfect in this role
Not just the best Blackadder season, one of the best seasons of British comedy overall.
I can’t remember if it’s been mentioned before but I’d love to see you watch Dads Army. Again it’s one of the best comedies we’ve produced.
While it's very funny, Blackadder IV does perpetuate a lot of WW1 myths. "Getting out of the trench and walking towards the enemy 18 times" is a perfect example. All Armies where constantly innovating new ways to try to overcome the stalemate. Gas, Tanks, Mortars, Small unit tactics, Artillery tactics, all evolved massively in the trenches. Just about the only branch of the British Army that DIDN'T constantly innovate was the Cavalry, ironically because the cav tactics of suppress and flank from 1913 worked.
Oh and I have sat in a field at night with night vision goggles and sketched enemy positions on exercise, so it's not actually that far fetched.
True, the 'combined arms' doctrine of plane-artillery-tank-men working in unison that came into play in 1917 was a world away from the tactics and strategy at the start of the war. In fact the war ended a year earlier than the allies anticipated with 1919 supposed to be the big push to end it all. The Somme, indescribably brutal, was actually pretty horrendous for the German side as well, with them losing almost as much men as the British, and while Britain was losing largely hastily trained volunteers Germany was losing it's dedicated peacetime trained core so in the grim-calculus of war of attrition, it was actually a win for the allies if an insanely bloody one. In the open field fighting before trench warfare became a factor France was regularly losing men at a faster rate than allied losses on the Somme, while Verdun remains a unique point of horror for Germany. There's a sort of myth that grew that Britain and France were kind of hapless and didn't inflict that much damage with the 'lions led by donkeys' view that became popular in the 30's. In actuality the Generals had a grasp on how to win the war, it's just that with the rudimentary level of technology combined with the enormous industrial potential and sheer masses of men on all sides meant that there was no way of doing so without an appalling butcher's bill. The war was a curious insanity that seems had to fathom today, but they were trying hard to win it.
Love watching your Blackadder videos. Feels like we're watching it together. Your laugh is contageous. When you laugh I automatically also have to laugh. Guess you hear that all the time. Season 4 is the best indeed. I've watched and enjoyed Blackadder in the 1990s during my highschool time, when it first came out. I'll check out your Patreon. Warm regards from the Netherlands, Adriaan
Notice the name Private S. Baldrick on the end titles...
Sodoff Baldrick xD
LOL =]
There is sketch somewhere, where Blackadder asks Baldrick for cup of coffee, it is hilarious!
I just have to jump in. In the thumbnail, the duration of the video covers up part of the second O in Cook. I have a filthy mind.
'Darling' is the best name in comedy history 'bar none', endless innuendo if that's the right word, I might be wrong. as I was known as a boldrick in my English class, I always thought it was because of all my cunning plans to get out of attending classes, which I never understood cos unlike Boldrick, my plans worked, so I was shocked when I found out the real reason, which was!!!!!
You could react to "Black Books". It has Tamsin Greig in it, who also plays the mum in "Friday Night Dinner".
I second this motion
It's a shame you didn't watch Blackadder's Christmas Carol between 3 and 4. It's set in the victorian era so fits in there nicely. Still, long as you watched it before you get to Blackadder Back and Forth (the most recent one)
Baldrick gets more stupid with every season. He actually started off pretty clever in series 1!
He's a clever idiot
Yeah that was possibly the biggest change- Series 1 has Blackadder as a venal, not-too-bright coward of privilege and Baldrick was the clever assistant. I'm glad they changed that dynamic.
@@cerisambrook7692 yeah bang on. Though oddly he’s a complete moron in season 2 & 4 and entirely subservient to Blackadder but in season 3 he has a bit more about him. He talks back a bit.
I cannot wait to see your reaction at the end of the last episode of this season. I personally think its the best ending to any sitcom ever.
Saw 3 episodes today on dvd. Great, classic series. Last episode is one of the very best episodes in all comedy.
They did a series of Saw?
I love the dynamic in this season as well as Guest stars I won't go into as I don't know how ahead you are with Blackadder yet.
Since they had George and Baldrick the idea was to make 'Percy' Blackadder's equal and Tim remembered a Boy he knew at School who's last name was Darling, they tried it out and it just wrote itself.
The best of blackadder without a doubt
The unfortunate thing about WW1 that Black Adder w3riters did was some facts and the rats to eat was actually true at the front because food warm clothing was not getting to the solders while the top brass were far away from the front lines with top foods. It is in a lot of ww1 history books and war museums in the UK France Germany.
Three Cheers for you mate, I've been waiting for this, best series of all I think, lets see how long before your laughing, really great reactions thanks
I always like seeing people watch and enjoy some of the great shows of the past. Black Adder is a great show but I'm a little biased as a Brit even though I moved to the US when I was 11 back in 1994. Not sure if you've ever watched Fawlty Towers but that's another British classic.
it really will help if you go and get a basic ( lol ) understanding of ww1 , there are alot of jokes in this series that do require some prior learning , its also helps to understand the gravity of some of the jokes and references
I think it's been proven that seeing spoilers actually increases how enjoyable something is when you actually watch it
That’s objectively not true
Peter Jackson (of Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fame) did a great movie/documentary featuring actual restored and colourised footage of the conflict as a tribute to his forebears who fought in it.
You never fail to make me laugh Josh. It's so contagious, I'm hooked! Hope you have a lovely 2022! Would be awesome to see Taylor back soon.
Yay ! 👍 Knew you would like these 🤗 and there are quite a few to get through hehee…enjoy 😁
Can't wait for the next one. When you finish this series. You might want to watch (in your own time of course) Blackadder "The whole rotten saga". Its on UA-cam in 2 parts I believe, it would quite an insight to the Blackadder series.
"Turnips to rats." 🤣🤣🤣
I think this season is the best , because the others were set far back in the past, while the horror of WW1 is still understood. Which means it's more relatable
They initially just had a generic captain, until someone came up with the name captain darling. Then they immediately had someone who was full of a lifetime of seething resentment from constantly being called Darling.
Greatest English comedy.....Up there with Red Dwarf
Blackadder's the only character who I can totally relate to in this series. The only man who can see the war is just a mass ritual sacrifice of human life.
Don’t forget Darling…
@@danieleyre8913 Yeah. Darling does know the score, in his bones. Too weaselly and unlikeable tho!
@@neilsun2521 He’d be the character most like the general audience though, whether he’s likeable or not. Be honest: We’ve all known plenty of Darlings and plenty of us have a bit of Darling in us.
I think I've watched goes forth 20 times over yrs.
22:02 I had thought it was called No Man's Land because no man can survive there, rather than neither side had laid claim to it.
23:46 "Not 'my field', minefield!" - David Jason
26:12 This'd make you think the British Army was the most incompetent participant in WW1, but in the situation the French had the worst uniforms, the US had to deal with a sharper learning curve despite what they picked up in the 1860s and everyone saw what happened with Russia.
A sharp learning curve means the learning was fast.
@@reinforcedpenisstem Which is kind of what I was referring to, but what I meant was that the GIs were still using the line of advance when the Anglo-French forces had finally developed a more flexible variant, and hence the former had to pick up in under a year what took the latter a couple of years at best to formulate.
Best season for me
I forgot how bad the canned laughter was on the final series.
Will you check out series 1 after this? I personally find it to be underrated. You could try the first episode to see if you like it, though episode 4 is particularly good.
It's not "canned", it's real laughter from the live studio audience. I wish people wouldn't make that mistake so often...
@@Zomdra It sounds canned though.
@@mattlm64 I think the problem is the same thing that afflicted Father Ted in season 3. It's a studio audience but the show has become so popular that they go in wanting to automatically laugh at everything full-pelt, because they find EVERYTHING funny, including repeated catchphrases. The Father Ted creators said this was a bit of a problem, as there were jokes that were meant to get a quiet chuckle to lead in to the proper crowning gag, but instead everything got the same response. The result is that you end up with something that sounds canned when it wasn't. This hits Blackadder Series 4 more than others though, as though I still like it (Fry as Melchett is magnificent) the 'cunning plan' catchphrase gags and comedy-overwrought similes become a bit too overdone.
LOL you should’ve watched the Christmas carol and cavalier years first.
The WW1 season is really really good.
Ive been looking forward to these still in my opinion best comedy series ever i liked the previous 3 but something about 4 just seems perfect
😂😂❤
You should react to Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie 💖
To be honest: I think you might like the first series “the black adder” after you’ve seen the other three series
Hellyeah
Series 4
@After Work Reactions
Hi josh any idea when peep show will be up next. Also you should react to This Country its like a mocumentary set in the country with english hillbillies. I sincerely think you'll be in tears, as always. Much love
Good season, but for me season 2 is the best :)
red dwawf ......?
If you like British comedy, focused on the military, you really should try bluestone 42. It’s very good, but the final season gets a bit silly and loses the idea.
Do you know why they are called booby traps? Because they are trodden on by tits! Shouted in the face of the comic relief, by someone who;s so far easy going, but seriously fuck up, and he makes it known.
The sad irony is while General Melchard seems like an over the top lunatic for comic effect a lot of the high ranking officers in WW1 were like that, blue blooded aristocrats with very little modern battlefield knowledge and absolute no concern for the working class tommy (soldier)
They sent thousands and thousands to needless and pointless deaths and shell shock/PTSD was seen as cowardice so they would put anyone who didn't throw themselves in front of machine gun fire in front of a firing squad.
Shame you didn't watch the 1st season......
Permission to comment ?
Aaahh.... no.
The next one is one of my favourite Blackadder episodes, but overall I find season 4 weaker, with recycled jokes and characters from earlier seasons. I think most of it's reputation comes from that last episode. Season 3 is the best overall, but do go back and watch 1 as well. It would be criminal to miss BRIAN BLESSED if nothing else. FRESH HORSE!
The overlay on your vids since last few weeks really hurts my eyes and makes watching non enjoyable for me. Love the content but lately I've been skipping forward to see if the lines are there then avoiding the video because of it. Really hope it get's removed soon 🙏
You need to speak slower, you are speaking too fast like a machine gun. I am slightly deaf and find hard to follow in what you are saying.
